Hi all!
I had to work yesterday (Friday) and that had an impact on this Dublin Event Guide. So unfortunately it is later again today than I would like it to be. There are a few less events this week, probably because of Electric Picnic, but the difference is not huge. I am sending you the current version at 11:50. Late but better than nothing. But then I will add some more events that happen during the week, so during the week, I suggest you have a look at www.dublineventguide.com where you will find the final version.
[quads id=1]
Thanks for the support again last week. your support is sooo important! The great news is that the September bill has been brought down to EUR 160 through your donations. But that is still a fair amount that we will have to find. You can help via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 72,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I chose a quote for the Feel Good Slot that is from John DiJulius, book author and customer service guru. He said:
Success will not lower its standard to us. We must raise our standard to success. – John DiJulius
I had to think about that quote for a moment. ;-) My interpretation of it is that whatever you achieve is great but not automatically success because there is a good chance that you can do better. So don’t play small, but raise your standards!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week the great Gerard P, Fiona F and Gabriel K were so great to help with essential donations! Thank you so much! Your help is much needed and VERY much appreciated.
Without donations the Dublin Event Guide will not continue arriving in your Inbox every week! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader, but no donations will eventually kill this resource for Dublin.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
I think because of the Electric Picnic and because school holidays are over, there are less weekend events this week, but there is another Family Fun Day (at Farmleigh House) on Sunday and on Satruday is an Eid Family Day in Herbert Park. Apart from that, IO suggest that you put the Science Gallery back on your list if you haven’t been in the current exhibition. It will be over soon and it would be a pity if you missed it.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Rooftop restaurant for Dublin
It has been announced this week that the plans for the former Central Bank building on College Green suggest offices for 1,000 people in the building and there will also be shops in the neighbouring buildings and a 300-seat rooftop restaurants on the top floor with super views over Dublin. I have been on the top floor of the Central Bank in the past and it is definitely a great view! The Plaza in front of the building will also be modified: The fences/rails will be removed and the whole plaza is planned to be MUCH friendlier than now.
The redevelopment will cost a pretty penny though! 75mio is no small change! And since the planning application only was submitted now, no timeframes have been outlined yet.

Low priced Aer Lingus flights to the USA & Direct flights to Hong Kong
Two interesting announcements have been made that will give us greater opportunities to get away for a little while to far away places without having to spend a fortune:
Aer Lingus said that they will offer flights to the USA for just EUR 169 each way from 01 October. There is a limited number of seats available and selling already starts now. The flight price includes NOTHING but a (non-allocated) seat: No check-in luggage, no blanket, no earphones. Ohh, meals are included! For all other add-ons there will be additional charges. It won’t be a super cheap weekend, but a relatively cheap one and for a weekend in New York you might be ok with just 10kg of hand luggage if that only costs EUR 340 in flight cost. Not a bad price BUT Norwegian currently offers flights for EUR 99 each way (Dublin to smaller airports near Boston or New York)! and WOW Air charges EUR 129 for flights from Dublin to the USA via Reykjavik (additional charges for meals), so Aer Lingus is definitely not cheap, it could work for some of you. Find newspaper articles in the Irish Independent here and here.
In a separate announcement, Dublin Airport has said that Cathay Pacific will offer the first ever direct Dublin – Asia flight with a new 4-times weekly flight from Dublin to Hong Kong from June 2018. The current return fares are approx. EUR 650.

Drummer needed for Gardiner Street Gospel Choir
Some of you know that I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. I am looking after all Technical and Sound related matters and am also involved with the smooth running of the choir.
At the moment we are looking for a drummer to join our 6-piece band. 40 people and 5 band members will rely on the drummer’s beat, so he has to be reliable in all aspects and it would help a lot if he enjoys playing gospel music and pop/modern songs with a spiritual meaning during a weekly mass and at gigs. Band and choir are all volunteers, so there is no pay available, but a huge amount of appreciation! ;-)
The weekly mass will run from September until June and there will be some gigs in addition to the weekly “Gig in God’s Gaff”! Support is available to get the drummer up to speed (pun intended ;-) ) with all the repertoir.
If you are a drummer and are interested or if you know somebody who might be interested, you or the drummer can contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject DRUMMER. Please include a phone number so that I can ring back to discuss some details. The first mass after the summer break starts on 10 Sept, so the sooner our new drummer contacts me ;-) the better!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Smithfield Horse Fair
09:00 – 13:00, Sun 03 Sep
Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.
It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.
Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.
Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before.
Did it solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!
Now the big questions that people ask: 1) What is there to do? 2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?
1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle. 2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 03 Sep
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Vermeer, Beyond Time – Film Screening
15:00 – 16:30, Sun 03 Sep
National Gallery, Merrion Square West, Dublin 2
Vermeer is one of the most well-known artists in the world today. How did this painter from the small city of Delft, living and working in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th Century, who died in penury and obscurity before being rediscovered some 200 years later, come to claim this level of admiration?
The documentary “Vermeer, Beyond Time” focuses on the artwork but also explores Vermeer’s family circumstances, his artistic contemporaries and the wider world of the short-lived Dutch Republic.
Admission is free.

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival
09:00, Mon 04 Sep
Donabate, Co. Dublin
The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival is taking place in Donabate from 03-10 Sept and there will be events about arts&crafts, photography, lots of music/gigs, walks & talks, samba drumming, puppet shows, open mics children’s signing workshop and kids fitness. And in addition there will be a short film festival, which is listed separately in this Dublin Event Guide. On 08 Sept, there will also be a Gala Concert in St. Patrick’s Church in Donabate.
All events are free, but some need booking.
Donabate is a small coastal town with just 7000 inhabitants about 20km northeast of Dublin, so it is not really big enough and close enough to list all events. For that reason I only one reminder in this Dublin Event Guide and then I am also listing the Film Festival because it might appeal to people even from further away. It is organised by Emma Fagan, who is well known as a passionate film enthusiast.

Green Drinks Dublin – Ireland’s Land Drainage Programme
19:00, Tue 05 Sep
J.W. Sweetman, 2 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2
The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in J.W. Sweetman’s. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together.
“Ireland’s Land Drainage Programme” is the topic this month.
“Ken Whelan from the Marine Institute will give an illustrated talk on Ireland’s land-drainage programmes over the past 50 years and the severe impact they’ve had on both our rivers and the wildlife corridors along these rivers. This includes the loss of some of the most important natural flood relief features of our river catchments ( wetlands, raised bogs, aquifers etc). In addition the current very expensive and hugely disruptive flood relief schemes do little to address the core long-term issues, particularly in the context of climate change.”
Meet up on the top floor of J.W. Sweetman’s. Doors open at 18:30 and the talk is at 19:00. Admission is free.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to some OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 06 Sep
Various heritage locations in Dublin
For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But June, it has been more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.
The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.
The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.
Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.
Outside but near to Dublin, you can visit + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow free of charge. The full list of sites in Ireland is here.
However, as you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Temple Bar “Night” Market
14:00 – 20:00, Wed 06 Sep
Temple Bar Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (14:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday until September.
You can buy Arts & Crafts at this market.
In previous years the missing food and drink stalls (probably to protect the pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar) was mentioned by visitors as a critique.
I am NOT sure if this market is still continuing. The Temple Bar Company is not very good when it comes to keeping telling people howlong something will run. They said originally September, but then they keep calling it a “Summer” Market. Mind you, they also call it “Night” Market when it starts at 14:00. :-O

Point Village, Dublin 1
The Cannonball Ireland road trip will take from 08-10 September and it will all start at the 3 Arena/Point Village on the evening before (Thurs 07 Sept). Some headline acts have been announced, but they forgot to mention when they will appear/perform. Dohh! They are The Four of Us, Aslan’s Christy Dignam, Paddy Casey, The Drum Club, Daft Punk, Blind Boy, The Pop Gods, but they might NOT appear in Dublin, but in Kilkenny where the tour ends or somewhere else.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 08 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

With more than half the world’s human population now living in cities, our cities have never been bigger, busier or more important to society. But that doesn’t always mean that they ‘work’ as they should.
Laurie Winkless explores the mechanics behind the metropolis in her book “Science and the City”, by taking readers on a whistle-stop tour of urban landscapes across the globe. In this talk, she will discuss the key things we need to consider to build better and more sustainable cities for all, from low-carbon power to smart flood defences.

ID Cards for Ireland? – Storm in a Tea Cup
There are passports in Ireland and most people have one, but for some strange reason some people in Ireland are totally and passionately against any type of ID Card system and currently there is a huge amount of panic amongst that group of people. I really can’t understand why that is! But then I read something that worried even me!
It all started with a report in the newspapers about a woman who’s pension was withheld because she didn’t agree to getting a Social Services Card. We are told that there are currently close to 3mio Social Services Cards issued to people in Ireland and with all children excluded and a population of around 4.7mio, that seems like a huge amount. The card was initially used to combat Social Welfare fraud, but it seems it is now unnecessarily also used for lots of other things and that seems to panic people.
The unnecessary uses of the card are in areas where it seemingly is used as an ID Card, for example if you want to do a driver theory test or if you want to apply for or renews a drivers license or a passport. There is NO need to use a “Public Services Card” in these cases. Instead it should be absolutely find to bring your passport as ID. (The worldwide joke of having to bring some other forms of identity to renew a passport is something I will write about another time. ;-) )
There is no obligation to have a passport AND there is no obligation to have a Public Services Card, but it seems without the Public Services Card you can’t get any services so there is a form of obligation.
But let me pick the pieces apart first: 1) Is an form of ID Card justified for people that receive Social Welfare? I absolutely think so. It helps fighting against fraud. 2) Should a Public Services Card be used for all the other services I have mentioned above? Absolutely not if the person has a passport instead. Sure it can be an option to ID yourself, but only ONE option. 3) Is the Public Services Card a National ID card? No! It isn’t and it doesn’t look like one BUT it is used like an ID card and therefore the principle of “If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it most likely is a duck” will apply.
Now SHOULD there be a National ID Card? I definitely think so! It does make sense to have a form of ID (instead of having to bring two household bills!!) but the use of the information “behind” the ID Card has to regulated and should be limited and that is where even I have concerns about the ability of the Irish government and state to protect its citizens.
As you know, I am German. In Germany we have National ID Cards since 1951!! And the requirement to always have an ID card with you was introduced in 1939 and nobody has a problem with this law. I never experienced any problem due to the fact that I had an ID Card or that I had to carry it with me all the time and even today in Ireland, I always have my ID Card with me.
So what is the panic? It seems that the panic is caused by the fear of how the authorities could do bad things to you if they know who you are. BUT they can arrest you anyway if you do something bad with or without ID Card and if you don’t do anything bad then they should not be interested in you, right?
Well, in Germany (and other countries) the system seems to work and you wonder if this panic is just a storm in a tea cup!? A panic about some imaginary risk that will never happen?
But then I read the article in the Irish Times about the person that found her car registration details in the records of the Department of Social Protection. Information that they should have NO access to because every department should only have access to the information they need for their own business.
And when you realise that most likely the Irish government WILL screw this up again and will share information across all departments even if they shouldn’t. Then suddenly you wonder if the worries of the panicking privacy defenders and ID Cartd opponents are maybe a lot more plausible than it should be?
