Hi all!

We are still in Winter, but there is definitely some Spring in the air, so this is the perfect time to start looking forward to a great outdoor season for festivals etc. Everybody is needed, however, to pray to your respective (weather) god to increase the chance of having summer this year around. So start early and pray a lot. :-)

Speaking of “good times” can I say a special Hi! and a huge Thanks! to all the people that came to our Alternative Valentine’s Day Party/Meet-up in The Lotts Café Bar last Saturday? It was a huge success, if I may say so myself. ;-) Nearly 100 (!!) Dublin Event Guide Community Members came and everybody had a great time. The venue was perfect and Frank, the manager of The Lotts Café Bar (www.thelottscafebar.com), even had some canapés for us to taste the culinary delights available in The Lotts. Coincidentally a Jameson promotion in The Lotts that night meant that there were some free Jameson Whiskey’s going around as well. :-) I had hoped for around 30 people to come and we were more than three times as many – so I am definitely impressed. I think/hope I was talking to everybody on that evening even if it was just a brief chat with some and my voice was gone at the end of the evening, but it was great to meet so many of you in person! The opinion all around was that we should meet more frequently and we will definitely do that! So the next meeting will be in approx 2 months. And another interesting fact: A quick count of all the nationalities that were represented arrived at the amazing number of 15!! :-)

If you are reading this Event Guide for a while, you will remember that I had mentioned before, that at some point I will have to include a LIMITED amount of advertisement. Writing this newsletter currently takes about 12 hours every Thursday night and that doesn’t include the many hours collecting events, exchanging e-mails with Event Organisers and with you, doing the competitions and the manual adding of new subscribers to the distribution list. I enjoy it and like with every hobby, I am not complaining at all, but in addition to covering the cost for sending (I have to use a commercial e-mail sender to limit the Spam classification problems I would encounter otherwise.) and some other Internet related cost, it would be great if I could invest some money in equipment that would help me to do the work in an easier way (I am looking at a Netbook at the moment: www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=428224) AND eventually to provide a well-designed website as well that enhances the way I can provide all this information to readers.
So, the new “thing” is a bit of advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, however, I promise that it will be a very limited amount and that it I will never let it to interfere too much with your enjoyment of this newsletter. If you have an issue with a little bit of advertisement sprinkled in, let me know and – in that case – please make some suggestions how else I can raise some needed funds. ;-)

This weekend I will spend 3 days in the D4 Hotels (former Jury’s) in Ballsbridge at the brilliant “Breakthrough to Success” Seminar. If you have never heard of it, I will tell you a bit more about it in the weeks to come and if Chris Howard is running another course in Ireland. But this course means that I will not be able to attend any other events this weekend.

If I were around, I would definitely go to the Flea Market on Sunday, Next week I would like to go to the “Eine heikle Sache” Theatre on Monday, the Instituto Cervantes Film Screening on Wednesday and the EYP Launch on Thursday, but I have some doubts that I will be able to.

The people from Arambe Productions, an Irish/African theatre company, are organising a concert that sounds very very interesting and to let you know about it – hopefully many will come to the concert – they are making a pair of tickets available to the readers of this newsletter.
“An Evening party of intercultural music” is the description and contributors are the 7-piece traditional group De Jimbe and a number of solo acts on the Irish circuit, including renowned Irish whistle player Cormac Breathnach, flautist Emer Mayock and singer Donna Anita Nikolaisen, better known when performing as Little Bird Song. Expect brilliant performances from a long list of performers!

TURMOIL IN THE RECORD WORLD
Music and DVD retailers in Ireland are in some trouble and the end result is not predictable. This week it was announced (www.rte.ie/business/2009/0218/zavvi.html)
that Zavvi, the former Virgin Megastore, a UK music and DVD retailer that only recently had opened a new shop in Dundrum, is now completely finished. Another 18 UK stores will close and 13 will be be sold. In Ireland, the Zavvi branch in Blanchardstown closed in Jan and another 5 of its 11 stores in Ireland were sold to HMV. The 110 workers at the stores in Dundalk, Dundrum, Liffey Valley, Limerick and Newbridge were transfered to HMV. The company went into administration because it was affected by the collapse of Woolworths’ Entertainment UK wholesaling division.
Five days earlier it was announced (www.rte.ie/news/2009/0213/goldendiscs.html)
that an examiner has been appointed for Golden Disc, which has 20 stores around Ireland. The group is insolvent and needs to close the loss-making stores to have a chance of survival.
And in January it was announced that Road Records, on Fade Street Dublin, is to close within the next two to three weeks. As an independent record store in Dublin, Road Records continually supported unestablished Irish artists, but dropping sales were cited as reason for the closure. www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2009/01/16/state-goes-online-only-and-dublins-road-records-shuts-up-shop In most recent news, however, it seems that a group of members of the Irish Music industry were trying to save Road Records. So lots happening in this sector and while it all happens in parallel to all other recession disaster announcements, it seems that at least a big share of the problems in all three cases are not direct results of the economic crisis, but maybe just sign of the times?

PUB + RESTAURANT NEWS
Another closure! AYA, the Japanese Sushi Restaurant behind Brown&Thomas, has closed. With a looong history and many years of successful operation, it is a surprise that now the economy is used as an explanation for the closure (well, they say that it is “partially” due to economic circumstances). But if such an established restaurant like Aya closes from one day to the next, you do have to wonder if the economic situation might be the main reason. Aya has an 11 year history and it would surprise me if the owners hadn’t weathered bigger storms before.

For a TV programme people who came to Ireland to work here and met their current partner in Ireland are needed. The couples should not be of the same nationality and should not be from Ireland. DECLAN CLARKE – GOETHE INSTITUT
“Loneliness in West Germany” is the title of an exhibition by Declan Clarke which will be on show in the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2) from 30 Jan-28 March. Admission is free. Clarke has created two new film works along with a number of interventions in the Goethe-Institut’s reading room, gallery space, library, car park and an upstairs apartment.

CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. The next public lecture will take place on Fri 20 Feb from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The topic is “Climate change and mass extinction: What can we learn from 200 million year old plants?” by Dr. Jenny McElwain, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science

IRELAND IN THE HEART – ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA
On Fri 20 Feb at 18:30 the Italian Cultural Institue will host the book launch of the result of a competition “Ireland in the heart/ L’Irlanda nel cuore”. The book contains the best of the 2008 competition and with an English translation it may be read by Irish and Italians alike, rendering its tales, poems, and sensations accessible to two different cultural sensibilities. Complimentary copies of the book will be offered to the public on the night. CHILDRENS WORKSHOPS – PHOENIX PARK VISITOR CENTRE
Until December 2009 an impressive programme of workshops for children will be provided in Phoenix Park every Sunday from 10:30-12:30. Participation is free. The max number is 20 and the workshops are suitable for ages 5+ (Parental supervision required.) The children’s workshops combine art, nature awareness, history and heritage and are taking place at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre.

EINE HEIKLE SACHE – THEATRE
“Eine heikle Sache, die Seele” is the title of a play by Bulgarian-Austrian writer Dimitré Dinev. The theatre group of the Germanic Languages Department of Trinity College Dublin is performing this play in German with English subtitles this week. The play is a tragicomedy about death, alcohol and migration. The performances will take place in the Deutsche Schule St. Kilians, Clonskeagh, Roebuck Road, Dublin 14 and admission is free.

BLAZE AWAY – LECTURES IN NATIONAL MUSEUM
A new lecture series, entitled “Blaze Away – A History of Duelling in Ireland” started on 03 Feb at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. This lecture series coincides with a newly opened exhibition at Collins Barracks, also called Blaze Away. The lectures will examine the history of creating and using pistols and swords in Ireland before mass manufacturing as well as the evolution of small arms technology in the twentieth century.
“The Three Duels of Daniel O’Connell” by Dr. Patrick Geoghegan.is the next lecture in this series. It will take place on 24 Feb at 18:30.
The Lectures will take place on Tuesday evenings between February and March at 18:30 in the AV Lecture Theatre at the National Museum of Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks. FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute in Dublin invites regularly to interesting talks and film screenings. All talks and screenings are usually in Spanish but translation into English or subtitles (for films) will be provided.

The film is a documentary about the Antonio, a 94 year old man, who has promised he would walk every day to the local church in order to keep himself active. EUROPE IN POPULAR LITERATURE – SYMPOSIUM
An interesting free symposium for everyone with an interest in literature will be taking place on Sat 28 Feb in Dun Laoghaire.
“Europe in Popular Literature” – Symposium is organised by the National Association of English Studies. It will take place on Sat 28 Feb in the IADT in Dun Laoghaire, Room A019. The event starts at 09:30 and you can contact aoife.leahy@ireland.com for more information. There will be discussions about “Irish Writers and Travel Literature”, “Nineteenth Century Popular Literature” and “Twentieth Century Gothic and Science-Fiction”. The symposium is absolutely free and everyone is welcome.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
The St. Patrick’s Day Festival website and was launched (with some hiccups) yesterday and the programme was announced for this year. The two surprises for me are a) the Fireworks Display is still not back in Dublin, it will be in Waterford and b) the HUGELY popular Ceili Mor has been cancelled completely. The Denny’s Big Day Out at Merrion Square will take place again and that was a great event last year. In addition there will be a performance on Grand Canal Square and this is the areason why I am already writing about the St. Patrick’s Festival. Co-presented  by St Patrick’s Festival and the Docklands Authority “The Spheres” is a unique spectacle performance which has broad family appeal. Creation, exultation, liberation, life, the universe and everything. The show takes a whimsical look at physics, the miracle of birth and humanity’s existential relationship to our planet. Performed by Strange Fruit a Melbourne-based performing arts company that produces and performs a remarkable style of work that fuses theatre, dance and circus, using a unique elevated medium. Perched atop 4 metre high flexible poles of original design, the troupe delivers a sublime performance, bending and swaying in the air, captivating and engaging the audience in absolute fascination.
The performance will take place on Fri 13 March at 18:30 and at 20:00 and on Sat 14 March at 18:30 and 20:00 on Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 1. The event is free but ticketed and you need to request your tickets here: www.dublindocklands.ie/spheres/index.jsp The duration of the show is 40 minutes. If you want to go, I suggest that you book soon!

MAN HUNT FOR PRAWO JAZDY
Did you hear this story about the Garda in Ireland? Allegedly the garda were searching for a person that broke the law and escaped because he had 50 different addresses. The story is quite hilarious and you better read it here
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7899171.stm?lss before I ruin it by transcribing it. :-) But if you are Polish and you have seen Mr. Prawo Jazdy, the Garda Siochana might give you a reward. :-P
