Hi all!

If you are receiving and reading this Event Guide for some while, then you know that I don’t really subscribe to the doom & gloom that surrounds us at the moment. It is not that I am wearing rose-tinted glasses or that I am ignoring challenges, but in my opinion all the negativity and pessimism that we are reading and hearing in the media is not enabling but paralysing.
Ireland had its fair share of negativity for decades, just watch some of the old Irish films and you can’t but see the hopelessness the people experienced in old Ireland. This lasted apparently until the early 90s and from around 1995 many people started to think more and more that the country and they themselves would be invincible. Grant Thornton, an international accounting and consulting firm, carried out surveys every year to check the attitude of business owners and they found that 2005, 2006 and 2007, Irish business owners were the most positive in Europe and on fifth place worldwide.

All was great, the Superman cape was firmly on until banks in the USA woke up to realise that their customers (not-surprisingly) can’t pay the ridiculous mortgages that they never could afford and suddenly all collapsed. This week the new Grant Thornton survey was published and from fifth positive worldwide, Irish business owners dropped to the MOST negative in the world!!!!

Disbelief and panic take over and panic is a bad driver for a business!
Things have changed and have changed for good and we have to accept it and see the upside, the advantages and the opportunities. Last week I mentioned that Innovation and Initiative are required and during the week quite a number of you contacted me and agreed. Now Initiative and Innovation is a lot easier if there are people around that support you. I do sometimes talk about the Event Guide Community and I do mean it, but there is more to enjoying free events in good times! My offer and suggestion is this: If you had to re-focus your energy from a company-based employment to an independent business idea, I will try to help! ______Joerg’s Plans______________

Quite a number of readers asked me to provide a digested version of the week’s events from the long list of events in this newsletter. It is quite challenging to pick and choose, so to make it a little easier for me, I am describing in this section what _I_ intend to do in the coming week and maybe that helps you.

There are still not tooo many events taking place this week, but obviously there is some “recovery” after Christmas and New Year.
On Saturday I recommend the Sketchcrawl if you are artistic. I am not, so I might go to the Dalkey Health Fair instead OR will visit one of the many free museums in Dublin (National Museum in Kildare Street and Collins Barrack, National Gallery on Merrion Square, Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square) because I haven’t been there for quite some time.
On Sunday I would go to Bruxelles to hear the brilliant Mary Stokes Band, but since I can’t cut myself in half and I am doing the sound engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir every week, I will be in Gardiner Street Church instead. After the mass I will rush to the Red Cow Inn because we have a gig with Kevin Doyle and the The Way It Was Orchestra where I will sing.
Next week my Krav Maga training is back after Christmas, so I will train on Monday and Wednesday. If I had the smallest bit of talent for dancing, I would go to the Flamenco Taster Class on Monday, but think it is better for me and for the teachers if I don’t go. ;-)

ELVIS PRESLEY CHARITY SPECTACULAR – TCIKET COMPETITION
Elvis Presley would be 74 years of age on 11 Jan 2009 and to celebrate this day, the Elvis Presley Social Club will hold an “Elvis Birthday Charity Spectacular” at the Red Cow Inn in Naas Road, Dublin. The event will benefit the Senior Citizens of Bluebell Utd. AFC and the entertainment line-up includes:
* Kevin Doyle and The Way It Was Orchestra (Ireland’s premiere Elvis performer)
* Special guest from the USA – Joe Esposito (Elvis’ Tour Manager)
* Guest performance by Mary Lee Jones, Ireland’s Shirley Bassey and recent winner of TG4’s search for a Christmas No.1
* A Search for Ireland’s Elvis – Heat 1 (there are12 entries in already from all over Ireland and the winner will win a trip to Memphis in January 2010 to perform during the 75th birthday celebrations for Elvis in Memphis)

In a slight change to the original plan Kevin Doyle will now not only perform with the The Way It Was Orchestra but as well with the Graceland Gospel Choir, so it will be the full band and choir and that means that I will be on stage as well (I sing in the backing choir.)

PETER MCVERRY TRUST FUNDRAISER – TICKET COMPETITION
The Peter McVerry Trust supports young homeless people to break the cycle of homelessness and move towards independent living through the provision of a continuum of care services including detox centres and training courses. Declan Crawford, who works with homeless people in a Detox Centre, is organising a fundraising event for the Peter McVerry Trust to raise much needed funds. And for this event, Declan has made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide. The event takes place on Wed 21 Jan in the Button Factory in Temple bar. BREAKTHROUGH TO SUCCESS – PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Longer term readers have heard this before, but many of you have not yet. In addition there has been a change, so I need to tell you about it again. :-) About a year ago I came across a seminar called “Breakthrough to Success” by Chris Howard and I knew nothing about it. It is a three-day seminar and since it sounded interesting (and was free), I decided to try it out. I can say that the seminar blew me away, it was just brilliant.
Chris Howard is a NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) trainer and coach who teaches and trains in the US, UK, Ireland and Australia. He is an amazing presenter and the whole seminar is very very polished and extremely professional. The seminar is provided for free and initially I thought there must be a catch. But there is none. It is genuinely free, but the reason for providing it is to inform people about all their other training courses and to sell these other training courses. So in essence the event is a promotional event, BUT in order to give you a good idea about what they promote and to get people to come to this event, they need to and do provide a lot of useful information and teach a huge amount of things in this 3 day course. Every 2 hours (or so) they tell you about another one of their courses and how much cheaper it is to buy it NOW, but the amount of advertisement is a lot less than what you would endure on an evening of watching TV. ;-)
The seminar teaches you and gets you to define your goals and then spends a lot of time in helping you to identify what holds you back from it and how to overcome the limiting beliefs and excuses that we often have to get you on the path of achieving your goal.
It is 3 full days of motivational exercises and full of positive messages and for some it gets a little much. I, however, think that the training is brilliant and that everybody who genuinely feels that something in his/her right should be or could be improved will get a LOT out of it IF you are determined to take part.
It starts on a Friday and a lot of people wonder if they could not just do the Saturday and Sunday and skip the Friday. In my opinion, if you can’t attend on the Friday you will have missed all the introductory elements and a huge amount of information, so I really don’t recommend just doing Saturday and Sunday. It is like starting a 12 week language course in Week 4!
So if there is something in your life (job/career, relationships, health, fitness, finances) that you want to improve and where previous attempts weren’t so successful and if you realise that you need a bit of a nudge and are open to be nudged, then you should definitely go. ‘Signatures’ has been commissioned by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County
Council. Work from ‘Signatures’, a public art project by Brian Maguire, Brian O’Connor and Dominic Thorpe, will beautify 22 advertising spaces (at bus and Luas stops etc.) in the Dundrum area over a two to four week period from Mon 12 Jan and audio work from the project will be played in 84 advertising slots on Newstalk and Lyric FM over seven days from Monday 12 Jan.

LA VIE EN ROSE – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
To celebrate his first show in Ireland, Nicolas Du Chatelle is presenting La Vie en rose, a parisian walk. Self-taught, his interest in photography stems from his life changing experiences during his travels in India. Nicolas Du Chatelle roves Paris with a stranger’s eyes, everyday finding some new magic in his surroundings, often veiled by daily routines, hidden away in the commonplace. Wandering through the changing seasons, he has harvested a rare bounty of unusual portraits, both touching and sad.

SAPPHIRE HIGHWAY – THE LAB
The Good Hatchery is presenting documentation of ‘Sapphire Highway’, an artist-lead residency program that took place at The Good Hatchery in Autumn 2008. The project investigated the potential role of contextual art practice in isolated rural surroundings. Featured artists are Ronan Coughlan, Sinead Breathnach Cashell and Patrick Corcoran. A publication documenting the artist’s work will be launched on Wed 14 Jan in The LAB, Foley Street. The evening will also feature a slide show and discussion describing the outcomes of the project. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute in collaboration with Comhar Sustainable Development Council, Environmental Protection Agency, Forfás, Geological Survey of Ireland, Met Eireann, Sustainable Energy Ireland, Teagasc is inviting to a weekly seminar focusing on bringing the science and policy of climate change to key stakeholders in the Irish Policy system, including the general public.
The next public lecture will take place on Fri 09 Jan from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 (www.numbersix.ie/site/910/default.aspx). The topic is “How fast can climate change? Evidence from the past.” by Dr. Andrew Parnell, UCD School of Mathematical Sciences. – And the description is “The world’s climate is entering into a period of change described as abrupt (Intergovernmental panel on climate change, 2007). Unfortunately, we have very few ways of measuring what kind of abrupt change might occur. One source of evidence is past (also called palaeo) climate, covering a period of time long before weather stations were used, or even invented. The reason we can study this period is because plants, animals, and all sorts of chemicals have recorded the climate for us. When we dig up these so-called climate proxies to look back, we see horrifying jumps in climate well beyond that predicted by the most advanced computer models currently used. This talk will look at how we reconstruct past climate from proxies and how we try and make honest judgements about climate change taking account of the uncertainty in the measurements we have. MEET THE GARDENER – PHOENIX PARK
This is a regular event and I might not list it here every week. Until 03 March a gardener will be available on most Saturday mornings from 10:30-12:30 in the Victorian Walled Garden at the Ashtown Demesne in Phoenix Park to answer your questions. SKETCHCRAWL – ART EVENT
‘Sketchcrawl’ is an international event, which sees artists all over the world gathering in their respective cities on one specific day and ‘crawling’ around, drawing/painting whatever they see. The results are then posted on the internet, with the result being that we have a ‘snapshot’ of the world on one specific day through the eyes of the artistic natives! Therese Ryan informed me about this event and about the fact that there is an Irish offspring of it in Dublin too:
All artists, whether pro or amateur, are invited to meet at the Spire in O’Connell Street on Sat 10 Jan at 11:00. The crawl will take the participants from the Spire to the Liffey, then into Trinity College, then St. Stephen’s Green, down Dame St and around Temple Bar. Crossing Ha’penny Bridge, the Italian quarter will be visited, before heading to Phoenix Park. Then the crawl goes back to O’Connell Bridge and it will finish at around 15:00 with a pint in Messrs Maguire (near O’Connell Bridge).    ANYONE is invited, regardless of talent and all is free (but you have to bring your own material).  Just be sure to have your sketchbooks out so that you can be recognised.

DALKEY GOOD HEALTH FAIR
On Sat+Sun, 11+12 Jan, the Dalkey Good Health Fair is taking place in Dalkey Town Hall & Heritage Centre from 11:00-17:00. Admission is free. This is the first of many free events throughout the year organised by the great people from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown (www.dlrevents.ie). EILEEN GRAY TALK – NATIONAL MUSEUM (COLINS BARRACKS)
As part of the Adult Gallery Talks series at the National Museum of Decorative Arts and History, Jennifer Goff, Curator of the Furniture Collection at the National Museum of Ireland, will be giving a talk this Sat 10 Jan, entitled ‘E1027: The House that Eileen Gray Built’. The talk is free of charge and no booking is required. The Family Programme provides an opportunity for adults and children to enjoy the excitement of learning about the arts through a wide range of free Gallery-based activities including exploring storytelling, music, art, poetry and drama. The topic of this week’s event is ” The Ice Queen’s Palace” with Imelda Healy. CHILDRENS WORKSHOPS – PHOENIX PARK VISITOR CENTRE
Until December 2009 an impressive programme of workshops for children will be provided in Phoenix Park every Sunday from 10:30-12:30. Participation is free. However, the max number is 20 and the workshops are suitable for ages 5+ (Parental supervision required.) The children’s workshops combine art, nature awareness, history and heritage and are taking place at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre.

SHUT DOWN GUANTANAMO – VIGIL AT US EMBASSY

FLAMENCO TASTER CLASSES
Sólo Flamenco will offer a new Winter term of classes, starting in January 2009.
There will be classes for Beginners and Improvers, and each class will begin with a free taster class so that you can try out if it is the right thing for you:
– Beginners Taster class: Mon 12 Jan at 20:15
– Improvers Taster class: Thurs 15 Jan at 20:00
The beginners class is aimed at beginners with no previous experience of flamenco, and those seeking to improve their technique, after the free taster it will take place from 19 Jan – 30 Mar every Monday from 20:15-21:30 and the cost is EUR 13 per class or EUR 130 per term (a EUR 10 discount applies if you pay for the term on the first night).
The Improvers class on Thursdays is aimed at students with a basic knowledge of flamenco who want to improve their technique and work on various “palos” (guajira with fan, bulería, alegría, soleá…). It will take place from 22 Jan – 02 April every Thursday from 20:00-21:30 and the cost is EUR 16 per class or EUR 160 per term (a EUR 10 discount applies if you pay for the term on the first night).
Both classes will be held in a small studio with a capacity of 12 students. So you should enrol as soon as possible if you want to take part! This public talk will focus on the long term collaborative practice of Artist, Youth Workers and young people in the Rialto Youth Project, exploring the collaborative relationship between the different disciplines.
The talk will focus on the current project ‘What’s the Story?’ which is dedicated to capturing, exploring and responding to the stories of young people, investigating recent developments of that project which include the hosting of a live participatory reading event.

The Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin are showing an exhibition entitled “Botanic Gardens of the World” from 15 Jan-18 Feb. “The exhibition illustrates the remarkable diversity of botanic gardens worldwide; their landscapes, collections, roles, activities and importance.” The exhibition is in the Gallery of the Education and Visitor Centre and Admission is free. INDYMEDIA – FUNDRAISER
This event is not free!! www.indymedia.ie is one of many many websites that I check every week to search for event notices and I regularly find events there. The events listed on Indymedia are nearly exclusively political events (demonstrations, meetings etc) and most of the time the politically quite polarised tendency of the information on the website does not reflect my opinion, but in the spirit of democracy, I think Indymedia is a very relevant site for non-mainstream political event announcements. Indymedia is organising a fundraising event on Thurs 15 Jan in the Lower Deck Portobello, Dublin and because I do use Indymedia and would miss a good few events that regularly are mentioned in the Dublin Event Guide if Indymedia wasn’t there, I am mentioning their fundraiser today. Doors open at 20:00 and tickets are EUR 5 before 21:00 and EUR 6 after 21:00. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. LE JEU DE MILLE EUROS – LIVE RADIO SHOW
Created by Henri Kubnick in 1958, “Le Jeu des 1000 Euro” remains the oldest and most popular radio quiz on France Inter and presented since 2008 by Nicolas Soufflet, Le Jeu des mille euros is broadcast all over the world. For the first time ever this radio show will be outside France, the quiz is coming to Dublin.
Three programmes will be recorded before a live audience on Tuesday 10 February 2009 at 18:00. The screening of potential participants will take place at that time. Candidates may be anything from 12-80 years of age. They need to be French speakers interested in all things French. So if you are French or can speak French and would like to win EUR 1000, then come along and try your luck!
The programmes recorded in Dublin will be aired during la Semaine de la Francophonie, 16-18 March 2009.
The recording in Dublin is taking place on Tues 10 Feb at 18:00. Admission is free but seats are limited, so you need to book your seat as soon as possible by contacting info@alliance-francaise.ie. I am not completely sure, but expect that the recording will take place in Alliance Française in 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

FREE ART FRIDAY
Free Art Friday is a relatively new art movement that’s rapidly gaining popularity around the World. Artists create a painting, sketch, sculpture or installation and leave it on the street. The piece can then be picked up by anyone and the finder can claim it as their own. Finders are encouraged to email the artist and tell them how and where they found it. The Free Art Friday movement are now asking all painters, photographers, illustrators, sculptures, graffiti artists, taggers, cartoonists or any visual artist to contribute a small piece of work that will be hung/placed/or left on the streets of Dublin on Friday 23 Jan for anyone to take away. Work submitted should be no bigger than 60x60cm (24 in) and must have an official Free Art Friday label affixed to the back (available to download from the Free Art Friday website) and be dropped off at All City Records, Crow Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 by Mon 19 Jan 2009.

______This is odd!!______________

Most weeks this section of the newsletter contains a story about something that I came across and that struck me as odd. This week there are many things, actually tooo many things to decide and some are odd but just not interesting enough. There was for example the Newstalk interview with the SIPTU president Jack O’Connor yesterday in which he was spitting out the words “neoliberal capitalists” repeatedly while “explaining” whose fault the current economic problems were.
It is certainly not good news that Dell is moving 1900 jobs out of Ireland, but it was inevitable and it was ALWAYS clear that they would do that at some stage. If the cost are to high in one place then the caravan (desert style not mobile home!) has to move on! However, what struck me as odd was that Jack O’Connor’s ideal world – where socialist principles rule (www.socialistparty.net/pub/pages/socialist011nov05/6.htm) – would have guaranteed that Dell had never spent 18 years in Ireland, giving employment to 4500 people. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0108/breaking8.html?via=mr
