Hi all!

I am writing this on Thursday evening and am just back from the lighting of the Christmas Lights in Temple Bar. Mulled wine, minced pies and brass music was part of the ceremony and there are REAL Christmas Trees in Temple Bar and tasteful lights. So, I am happy!
While strolling through Temple Bar, I got some hugely relevant advise from a guy on Temple Bar Square, so I had an educational experience as well. ;-) The slightly unsettled guy told everybody “Don’t let them lock you up! DON’T let them lock you up! Cause they will never let you out again!” …and seeing him dance outside a pub to the music inside the pub a few minutes later did make me FULLY understand what he meant. :-) Dublin has some great characters!
November is nearly over and we definitely are getting into Christmas territory now. The “do a daily random act of kindness” challenge is still ongoing, as I had suggested a few weeks back, and I still get lovely and supportive mails from many of you. Thank you very much!

This Dublin Event Guide is quite long again, but you will see that there are not many MUST GO events in it. A slightly quieter week before all Christmas events will start next week. So my own plans this week will include some chill-out time. But nevertheless there are some events that I will try to attend:
*Saturday: The Fundraising Concert for Aline Barros on Saturday evening is an event I will definitely try to go to. Why don’t you nominate this cause as your random act of kindness for Saturday and join me in the support of Aline. In the morning I might visit the Temple Bar Food Market again, I haven’t been there for a while, and after that I will probably go for a stroll in Grafton Street and will try to go to the RHA Gallery Exhibition at 15 Ely Place. I was warmly recommended to me.
*Sunday: The Flea Market was great last week and hopefully there will be another one before Christmas, but this week I will probably just go to the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass and spend the day doing some work on some “secret” ;-) project in the context of the Dublin Event Guide.
* During the week: I will try to find time to go to the play in the Project Art Centre “Everybody loves Sylvia” (you find it in the Competition section).

EVERYBODY LOVES SYLVIA – THEATRE
Jessica from the theatre company “Randolf SD – The Company” contacted me during the week, she is a member of the Dublin Event Guide Community and is involved in what seems to be a brilliant play on show in the Project Arts Centre. The newspaper reviews I saw praise the performance hugely and “Randolf SD” want you to come to see their performance. The play is called “Everybody Loves Sylvia” and is an updated adaption of the classic French comedy “La Double Inconstance” by Pierre de Marivaux and is a s a look at the question ‘ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have’. The performance is taking place in “Project Cube” in the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar (39 Essex Street) at 20:15 every evening but ONLY until Sat 06 Dec, so you better book your tickets immediately! JOSE PARRA FLAMENCO CONCERT
Internationally-renowned virtuoso flamenco ‘cantaor’ José Parra will be in Dublin for one night only and RaffaAbarca Promotions (www.raffaabarca.com) have made a pair of tickets available for a competition.

IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE EVENTS – TICKET COMPETITION

On 02 December Eugene McCabe, who wrote “Death and Nightingales”, which has been described as “a deeply moving, powerful, and unforgettable book” and as “clearly one of the great Irish masterpieces of the century”, will read and discuss his work as part of the Writers Centre “Hourglass Readings”. LESZEK MOZDZER – ARTPOLONIA JAZZ CONCERT
ArtPolonia, the Lab for intercultural cooperation and exchange is having the last event in this year on Sun 30 Nov at 20:00 in the Liberty Hall Theatre and they made a pair of tickets available to one of you. The lucky winner is Ursula Kolodziejczyk. Congratulations!
ArtPolonia is delighted to present for the fist time in Ireland the Leszek Mozdzer Trio with their improv jazz concert “Between Us and the Light”. SMITHFIELD FARMERS MARKET NOT LUCRATIVE
Not too surprisingly the Farmer’s market at Smithfield Plaza doesn’t seem to be very lucrative. I think the marketing for this market could be a LOT better, but the more profitable target market is definitely elsewhere. However it surprised me to read that Dublin City are the main drivers behind the choice of location. Because the traders don’t make enough money in Smithfield it is considered to set-up another farmer’s market at Portobello Harbour beside the Grand Canal. This is probably the square right beside Portobello College and opposite the Lower Deck Pub. A decision hasn’t been made yet.
Another interesting fact is that there is a farmer’s market in Coppinger Row, beside the Powerscourt Town Centre, I hadn’t known that.

DUBLIN CITY CAR PARKING CHARGES GOING UP
From 01 Dec the Pay&Display prices in the Yellow, Red and Green Zone in Dublin are being increased again. I guess this is part of the plan of making Dublin more attractive for shoppers. :-/ (See as well the “This is odd!” section at the bottom of this mail.) The new charge in the Yellow Zone is EUR 2.90 (previously EUR 2.70), in The Red Zone EUR 2.40 (up from 2.20) and in the Green Zone EUR 1.60 (up from 1.50).

CHRISTMAS STORYTELLING FOR CHILDREN – CITY CENTRE
The Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) is inviting children to free Christmas Storytelling Sessions as part of its BIDs for KIDs programme. From 22 Nov to 14 Dec special Christmas storytelling sessions will take place each Saturday and Sunday in St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre and The Gresham Hotel.
The storyteller, Susie Minto, will draw in listeners around the imaginary hearth and warm their hearts with Christmas and Winter themed stories from many traditions – Irish, Native American, European, and Japanese.
The storytelling sessions will last 30 minutes and all children aged four to ten years old, accompanied by an adult, are welcome. ALINE BARROS – FUNDRAISING CONCERT
Some of you might have heard of Aline Barros. Aline is a 26 year old Brazilian woman, who is paralysed from the waist down after being hit by a truck while cycling to work in Dublin. She has been in hospital since the accident happened on 22 July. First she spent two months in the Mater Hospital and now she is in the Dun Laoghaire rehabilitation centre. Her friends are now attempting to raise money for Aline’s future care and rehabilitation in Ireland and Brazil.
A Fundraising concert is taking place on Sat 29 Nov at 18:30 in the Seven Day Adventist Church in Ranelagh (very near to the Luas Bridge).

On Mon 01 Dec is the Dublin Senior Citizens Day Out taking place. The Friends of the Elderly with support from Dublin City Council and Dublin City Business Association will host this day and many shops will give discounts to senior citizens on that day. ART TO HEART TALK – DUN LAOGHAIRE-RATHDOWN
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Arts Office Education and Community Programme are delighted to present the Artists Panel 2008/09. Immigration, Residency and Protection Bill will be discussed at Seomra Spraoi, 10/11 Belvedere Court, Off Mount Joy Square on Tue 02 December from 19:00.
David Landy will give a talk at Seomra Spraoi on the new Immigration Residency and protection Bill. The IRP bill will bring some key changes to the ‘management’ of migration, including a number of draconian elements with some very important political implications. He has a particular interest in mental health and has extensive experience of dealing with issues such as depression, addiction and anxiety as part of his busy practice in Drogheda.

BLAZE AWAY – NATIONAL MUSEUM EXHIBITION
The National Museum (Decorative Arts and History) in Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin 7 is inviting to a new exhibition from Thurs 04 Dec which will be officially opened on Wed 03 Dec by Gerry Ryan at 18:00.
The new exhibition entitled “Blaze Away” examines duelling in Ireland and the work of two Irish families who made swords and guns in Dublin in the 19th century.
Blaze Away highlights the work of the Rigby family of Suffolk Street, who were Ireland’s most famous gun makers, and the Read family of Parliament Street, who were Ireland’s most renowned sword makers.
Lar Joye, military history curator at the National Museum of Ireland, said “Duelling reached its high point during the early 1800s. Using the latest interactives, the exhibition explores the history of this gruesome practice and also places duelling in its social and economic context”.

PUNHO FORTE – PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
On Thursday 04 Dec at the Loft in the Powerscourt Townhouse, Dublin, Punho Forte will hold a unique photography exhibition showcasing the work of some of Brazil’s poorest children. Punho Forte provides educational, recreational and mentoring programmes for disadvantaged youth in Itacare’s shanty towns. It is supported in its work by Punho Forte Ireland, a registered charity in the Republic of Ireland. The programmes aim to offer innovative ways to attract the most vulnerable children in the community into a structured and supportive environment where they can develop and attain their potential. Recreational programmes such as this photography project, Ponto de Vista, reach out to and engage the children otherwise forgotten in rapidly sprawling towns.
The point of view of the children taking these photographs is captured in their shots; vibrant and optimistic. Where adults see poverty, suffering and need; children see colour, fun and opportunity. Punho Forte hopes to develop this vibrancy with your help and all proceeds from the sale of prints at the exhibition will go toward the building of a community centre in Itacaré.

GABRIEL ROSENSTOCK – OUT TO LUNCH
Gabriel Rosenstock was born in Kilfinane, Co Limerick in 1949. He writes primarily in Irish and is the author or translator of over one hundred books. His children’s poetry is selected as Dánta Duitse (Cló Iar-Chonnacta, 1998). A member of many literary societies and organisations, he has been widely published abroad. Some of you might remember that in 2003, Mary Harney – she was then the Minister for Enterprise – told us to “Shop around” so that we don’t pay overhiked prices in Ireland. (business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/article1158660.ece) This good and valid advise was not everywhere appreciated at the time, but now in 2008 we were even explicitly told by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne, while she switched on the Christmas Tree lights in O’Connell street that out of “civic patriotism” we should shop in Dublin not outside the country (www.rte.ie/news/2008/1109/dublin.html).
Now, you might now that the Lord Mayor of Dublin has a purely symbolic and representative role (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Mayor_of_Dublin) and is a city councillor chosen by the other city councillors to be Lord Mayor for just one year. So maybe the opinion of this symbolic figure is not too relevant. But could somebody have pointed out to her that the new and flashing, totally non-christmassy Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street (part of a 1 million Euro investment into new Christmas lights) was bought in FRANCE??? Even the Lord Mayor of Dublin won’t stop me from shopping around and comparing prices and if the prices are competitive in Dublin, I will definitely buy here. But if they aren’t, then it is my civic duty to spend my hard earned money elsewhere!!

Speaking of Dublin City Council: Have you heard that Brown Thomas in Grafton Street was told by Dublin City that the Christmas Music which they emitted at the front of the shop has to be switched off because it is noise pollution (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/1122/1227293431700.html)?? Is that the same Dublin City that got the Christmas lights in O’Connell Street switched on 3 weeks earlier to get people earlier in the festive shopping mood (www.rte.ie/news/2008/1109/dublin.html)?? Do they want a nice Christmas atmosphere or not? I am puzzled!
