Hi all!

When I sent last week’s Event Guide a serious problem occurred. For the last 15 months I used a slightly out-of-the-ordinary way of sending so many mails. I did send the weekly newsletter in 20+ junks of 99 mails through a number of Gmail accounts. I know this is not the way it should be done, but it was the only free way I could find for the distribution to such a large list of people. Unfortunately last week more than 400 mails were rejected by Gmail and apart from the additional work of sending in a different way, things looked bleak for the future. As most of you know, this is a non-commercial project/hobby/effort and I am not making any money from it, so using free services – even if in a non-intended way – is/was a must. The only money I get is through donations and I appreciate the help I got from a few of you immensely. However if the free way doesn’t work anymore, the only alternative is to use a commercial mail sending service and suddenly there are significant cost. So I
was at a point were a tough decision had to be made and for a moment I even had to consider the termination of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Luckily this worst case scenario could be averted and the White Knight is Patrick Cumiskey from www.kravmagaireland.com. Patrick agreed to pay for the cost of sending this Event Guide every week through a commercial sending service for the next 12 months!! I hugely appreciate this and please join me in thanking Patrick for his help!

Krav Maga is the self-defense system that I have mentioned in the past, I am doing that for a number of years now and I do help with the teaching as well. Krav Maga was developed as a weapon-less self-defence for the Jewish population in Bratislava and later became the close quarter combat system of the Israelian army. Despite this background it is very easy to learn and suitable for men and women of all ages and all fitness levels. I am training with Patrick every week and can only recommend the courses. We do 12 week courses or 2 day courses for beginners and over the coming weeks I will tell you a bit more about Krav Maga. The consequence of this new way of sending the newsletter through www.icontact.com/a.pl/318993 is that many of you will receive the newsletter from a different sending address. The address is dublineventguide@gmail.com and it will help if you add this address to your address book in your e-mail system. It is possible that some of you receive this Event Guide for the first time because in the past the weekly mail was blocked by your Spam Filter, in that case: WELCOME! :-) Unfortunately it is possible as well that the mail will end up in your Spam Filter despite the fact that this never happened before, in that case please tag it as “Not Spam” or “Not Junk”. In general the delivery rate should go up significantly (i.e. less service providers should classify the mail as Spam), but only time will tell the exact effects of the new delivery method. If you experience problems, please do tell me!!! Let’s hope that through Patrick’s help sending and spam classification problems are a
thing of the past. And over time, this might even enable me to send more stylised (HTML-based) Event Guides because the risk of Spam classification was ONE of the reasons why I could not do that in the past.

On Sat 04 Oct two parts make up this event. At 14:00 a public interview will take place in the Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
The renowned musicologist Bob Gilmore will be conducting a public interview with the composer Michael Byron. Dr. Gilmore, who is based at Brunel University in London, has written extensively about the experimental American tradition and his work on the composer and instrument-builder Harry Partch earned him the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for works of excellence on American music. The interview, which will be accessible to all, will cover the background to the work Dreamers of Pearl, and some of the factors that brought it to life.
Admission to the interview is free.

This concert is a rare opportunity to hear the celebrated New York pianist, Joseph Kubera. Kubera, world famous for his recordings of John Cage’s most virtuosic music, was described by the Village Voice as ‘one of new music’s most valued
Performers’. You will hear Kubera performing Dreamers of Pearl, a true masterpiece of 21st century music by the composer Michael Byron, a fellow New Yorker. Dreamers of Pearl, which was released on New World Records this month. It is a monumental work of profound beauty. Also not to be missed is the premiere of a new work by the prolific young Dublin composer, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly. Schlepper-Connolly’s work was recently described as ‘highly evocative’ in the Irish Times and ‘powerfully elegiac’ in the The Journal of Music in Ireland.

CONDEMNED: LETTERS FROM DEATH ROW – BOOK COMPETITION
Another great book from Liberties Press and – we are lucky – another book competition courtesy of this independent Irish publisher. “Condemned: Letters From Death Row” by Sean O Riain and Ray, is a unique collection of letters between two pen-friends. Sean is a retired school teacher from Cork and Ray, a prisoner on death row in the USA. The book, as Seán explains in the prologue, unashamedly denounces the death penalty as “biased, racist, cruel and repulsive” and provides a good few facts and opinions about the death penalty. Ray’s letters are extremely affecting in their simplicity, describing his daily life on death row, and his dreams, hopes and regrets. Throughout the book, Seán has written explanatory notes, and added case studies, which allow the ordinary reader a better understanding of this form of retribution. Ray has been convicted of killing a man, a crime he committed as a young man and that he freely admits and regrets. For Ray his sentence is death and what he seeks
is not a pardon – or pity or freedom. Simply he hopes that his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment without parole. For most of us to hope for something so bleak seems unimaginable – but for Ray this is the focus of his appeals. Seán Ó Riain has been writing to Ray for several years and, while Seán’s careful letters are featured, it is the simple and heartfelt descriptions of life on death row by Ray that form the bulk of the book’s content.
I started reading this book a few days ago and found it difficult to put it down!!

GERMAN NAVAL SHIP IN DUBLIN
A brilliant find by Estelle just reached me late on Thursday evening: Since 24 Sept the Gorch Fock, the German navy’s sailing ship is in Dublin at Sir Rogerson Pier No 6. The Gorch Fock is a massive and impressive sailing ship and every cadet (sailor that wants to become an officer) has to do a stint on it. I expect that every single person in Germany has head of the Gorch Fock and YOU will be able to see AND visit the ship! On Sat 04 October (from 14:00-17:00) and Sun 05 October (from 10:00-12:00 and from 14:00-17:00) any interested person, including children, will have the opportunity to visit the Gorch Fock and meet with the cadets free of charge and without previous appointment.
The Gorch Fock is the German Navy school ship and since 1958, fourteen thousand cadets have been trained to pursue a career in the German Navy. The ship is almost 90 meters long and the total size of its sails is about 2000 square meters. The whole crew encompasses 222 men and women and among them 112 future Navy officers are spending their first time onboard such a big sailing ship. In total, the Gorch Fock travelled almost 700,000 nautic miles, which is the equivalent to ca. 32 times around the world.
I will definitely go to see the ship. I have heard and read sooo much about it and never saw it before! What a brilliant find by Estelle!

BUDGET 2009
If you only recently have arrived in Ireland, you probably don’t know that every years there is a big ritual around the beginning of December when the Minister for Finance announces the Budget for the coming year. Until a few years ago that was in March because the rules for the financial year (together with this ritual) were copied from the rules in Britain, then the wise move was made to move the financial year to coincide with the calendar year and the announcement moved to the first week in December. This year – with all the panic about the doom and gloom ahead of us (called “recession”) – the Budget announcement has been moved to the 14 Oct. the idea is to announce earlier how the government will sort out all the financial challenges and will securely guide us back into wealth and prosperity. Most of the things that will be announced will only be applicable from the 01 Jan (for example possible income tax increases :-( ). However, if there are tax increases on cigarettes,
alcohol and petrol, it usually comes into effect at midnight on the day. Keep that in mind!

‘Karkinoma’ is a research-based exhibition of work by Kate Minnock influenced by Dr. Angel H. Roffo, whose groundbreaking research on the cancer-causing effects of solar radiation was presented at the 2nd International Congress of Scientific and Social Campaign Against Cancer in 1936 to over 200 eminent cancer research specialists. PHANTOM FIRST FRIDAY
Since July, Phantom 105.2 have been running the “Phantom First Friday” event at ALT (Andrews Lane Theatre) on the first Friday of the month. The next event is tonight, Fri 03 Sep. The event consists of live performances from two up-and-coming Irish bands, with a headline set by a more established Irish band. This month First Friday in the Andrew’s Lane Theatre will feature live music from The Aftermath, Concerto for Constantine and Grand Pocket Orchestra, followed by all of your favourite indie, alternative and electro tunes with Sinéad Ní Mhórdha. Doors open at 20:00 and admission is free before 22:00pm (admission after 22:00 is EUR 7, concessions EUR 5 with the First Friday ad from Metro). So if you turn up early it is a free event. FESTIVAL OF WORLD FOOD – MARLAY PARK
This weekend on Sat+Sun from 10:00-18:00 the Festival of World Food is taking place in Marlay Park in Rathfarnham. Organised by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (who have to praised for their brilliant events programme this year!) the description goes like this:
“Embark on an epicurean adventure of world foods … Baba Ganoush from Lebanon, sushi from Japan, bratwurst from Germany, hot vindaloo from India, oodles of noodles from Japan, Spanish tapas, French haute cuisine, fresh Italian pastas, tex mex, creole, pig roast and an authentic Yurt dwelling
This is just a small sample of what is on offer at the Festival of World Foods that takes place at Marlay Park each day with foods, flavours, cookery demonstrations and workshops from around the globe. Highlights include the Agri Aware Mobile Farm and ‘Meet the Spuds’ demonstration Unit where children can get up close to farm animals and farm life. The Back to Basics area will feature an authentic ‘Yurt’ dwelling where people can enjoy home made ice-cream, smoothies and raw foods. Guest Head Chef, Traweekak Trakoolwattana from award winning Thai and Vietnamese restaurant Saba who previously cooked for the king and queen of Thailand will do cookery workshops showcasing his unique ingredients and cooking style. A big highlight of the Festival of World Foods is the Hoe Down with a pig roast, corn on the cob and baked potatoes with live music from popular 7 piece string band ‘Prison Love’ complete with prison uniforms, washboard and a selection of Bluegrass, old-time, gospel and Cajun
tunes with great music and fun in equal doses.
A World Food Festival Café will sell lunchtime or snack offerings and give families an opportunity to sample some of the best foods in Ireland and around the world, attend workshops such as sushi making, sausage making and world food cookery demonstrations from Trinidad to Thailand. For young epicureans, there will be an origami workshop stall and a bigger and better ‘decorate your own cupcake’ stall. Entertainers and face painters will also be there to add a touch of folly to the event and the National Children’s Hospital will host a stall where children can play a game and win a prize, with all proceeds going to the hospital.
There will be food stalls from Palestine, Lebanon, Algeria, Germany, Italy, France, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Japan, China, Thailand, Greece, Spain, Sri Lanka and India. The festival will also focus on the wonderful innovations taking place in this country at the farming and artisan levels, with priority being given to applicants from farming, growing and producing backgrounds.
>From Ireland there will be bakeries, farm house cheeses, condiments, butchers, gluten free products, organic fruit and vegetables, beverages, hot-food and a selection of our best home produced products. There will also be stalls dedicated to educating the public about environmentally friendly concepts, composting and an on-site nutritionist who will answer general questions in addition to hosting lectures on such important issues as how to interpret food labels.” Admission is free and I will definitely make my way to Marlay Park over the weekend.

Marlay Park is a 300 acre (85 hectares) suburban public park located in Rathfarnham in County Dublin. About ten kilometres from Dublin city centre, the parkland comprises woodlands, ponds, walks and recreational space that also includes miniature railway run by the Dublin Society of Model and Experimental Engineers and a craft courtyard with home craftshops and coffee shops.
The park was acquired by Dublin County Council in 1972 that developed the land as a regional park. Opened in 1975, it is now administered by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
Dublin Bus serves the park directly with the 16 bus, but the following buses are within walking distance: 14, 14A and 48A directly to the city centre.

DUBLIN FOOD-COOP MARKET
Every Thursday (14:00-20:00) and Saturday (09:30-16:30) the Dublin Coop Food Market at the new premises in 12 Newmarket, Dublin 8 takes place. It is not really a market to stroll over and to browse, but it is a more serious market where you would go to buy your vegetables etc and then leave again. It is a true co-operative that runs the market and you can become a member, contribute with your help every 7 weeks or so and then get a discount OR you can just buy for the normal price. Nearly all food products are organically grown, the prices are competitive and the food products are sold by the producers, so this is Fair Trade in its purest form. dublinfood.coop/index.html

LAB IN THE GALLERY: PAY ATTENTION! – SCIENCE GALLERY
The great Science Gallery – I am totally thrilled with the exhibitions and programmes offered and can’t praise it enough – is running a new programme from 04-31 Oct. (Tues-Fri 12:00 – 20:00 and Sat-Sun 12:00 – 18:00). The title is “Lab in the Gallery: PAY ATTENTION!” and it is a giant brain lab that awaits you.
“Do you sometimes walk into a room and can’t remember why? If so, that’s because you haven’t paid enough attention to the plan you made that brought you there. Our ability to pay attention is probably the most important part of being human – second only to language.
In the Lab in the Gallery, we would like you to take part in the most exciting challenge facing modern science – the nature of human consciousness. Attention is the royal road to consciousness, and when it malfunctions, it can cause real problems, including death in accidents, mental illness and billions of euro of lost productivity in the economy.
The studies we will be running in the Lab are real scientific studies where we need you to contribute by letting us look into your brain as you pay attention. By helping us, you will be helping science and the application of science to medicine, safety and industry. Thank you!
Lab in the Gallery:PAY ATTENTION! brings a working research laboratory to a public, gallery space for the first time. PANEL DISCUSSION: THE GREATER GLORY
A Dublin Theatre Festival is the “Panel Discussion: The Greater Glory”. It will take place on Sat 04 Oct from 13:00-14:30 in the Minerva Suite in the RDS. Admission is free. “To coincide with performances of Black Watch leading political and artistic commentators discuss issues of militarization and war and whether there is greater glory in compromised neutrality or active engagement. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD
If you have never experienced it, you should take the opportunity this Sunday 05 Oct to visit the Smithfield Horse Market. I said this before and I am trying – until now without success – to peel myself out of bed at an ungodly hour on a Sunday morning to experience this event first hand:
Only once a month, every first Sunday of each month this unique event takes place. Close to sunrise, Smithfield Square fills with hundreds of horses, as well as scores of dealers, keen to make some cash on a few quick sales. The scene is like no other in Ireland and if you survive the early hours, I am sure you will leave this event full of stories to tell to your friends and families. Mind the galloping horses and the horse droppings and stay safe if you go there, but have fun and tell me all about it afterwards! :-)
Another reason for going now should be that for a while already there are plans to move or close this market completely. That means that you never know how many more opportunities you have to experience the Horse Market.

WORLD HEART DAY WALK
This Sunday 04 Oct is World Heart Day and in many locations around Dublin walks will take place to point out the importance of developing & maintaining a healthy heart. A few of the walks are taking place in Phoenix Park and one for them is organised by the Dublin Event Guide Community Member Cathy Albanese and her sister Yasmin. Join Cathy and Yasmin or any of the other walking groups on Sunday for a healthy hour.

PANEL DISCUSSION: THEATRE AND WAR
Part of the Dublin Theatre Festival the “Panel Discussion: Theatre and War” will take place on Sun 05 Oct from 17:30-19:00 in the Minerva Suite in the RDS. Admission is free. Addressing issues raised by The National Theatre of Scotland’s Black Watch, major artists and policy makers discuss the responsibility of art at a time of war and the increasing importance of cultural diplomacy. Panellists include Eugene Downes, Chief Executive of Culture Ireland. The discussion will be chaired by Patricia Quinn with Sally Cowling, Gregory Burke, Eugene Downes.

POSTNATAL DEPRESSION – AWARE PUBLIC LECTURE
Aware is a national voluntary organisation providing support through depression. The organisation undertakes to create a society where people with depression are understood and supported, are free from stigma, and have access to a broad range of appropriate therapies to enable them to reach their full potential. In public lectures Aware are trying to inform the public about depression and the effects and cures. The October lecture in the Aware Monthly Lecture Series takes place on Wednesday 08 October at 19:30 St Patrick’s Hospital (Lecture Theatre, Swift Centre). The lecture focuses on Postnatal Depression and the speaker is Ms Rosemary O’Callaghan, Women’s Health Development Officer, HSE. Admission is free. www.aware.ie/lectures.php

Yes, it is true. The famous Munich Oktoberfest has sent a cousin to Dublin this year. From 09-19 Oct George’s Dock in the IFSC is the home of the Paulaner Oktoberfest in Dublin. Once you get your head around the slightly confusing advertisement that talks about tickets and a price of EUR 52, you realise that the tickets and the high price (for not much!) is for the corporate event only and that the normal day programme and evening programme is free for non-corporate visitors. RMS LEINSTER COMMEMORATION
For the RMS Leinster 90th Anniversary Commemoration on Fri 10 Oct, the Garda Band will lead events in Dún Laoghaire marking the 90th anniversary of the worst ever disaster on the Irish Sea. Just one month before the end of the First World War over 500 people perished when the mail boat ‘RMS Leinster’ was sunk by a German U Boat shortly after it departed Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
This year’s events will commence at 12:00 on Friday 10th October – the actual date of the disaster – with a gathering in the local St. Michael’s Church.
Those attending will then be led by the Garda Band as they make their way to the anchor of the RMS Leinster, which to-day lies on the Dún Laoghaire sea-front.

INTERNATIONAL CRITICS’ FORUM – THEATRE FESTIVAL
The Irish Theatre Magazine hosts its annual International Critics’ Forum, at which leading theatre critics from home and abroad get to grips with the highlights of the Festival programme. The panel will be chaired by playwright, poet and broadcaster, Vincent Woods, presenter of RTÉ Radio 1’s The Arts Show. Audience participation welcome. The event will take place on Fri 10 Oct in the Project Art Centre from 16:00-18:00 and admission is free.

CAPOEIRA FESTIVAL
The 7th Capoeira Ireland Festival is taking place from 10-12 Oct. If you have never seen Capoeira you should have a look. It is a very interesting and exciting combination of dance, disguised martial art and acrobatics.
There are a number of events taking place over the weekend and I tried to find out if they are all free or not (for SOME it is specified). Unfortunately I didn’t get any reply from Capoeira Ireland so maybe check with them before you go. You can find their phone numbers on www.myspace.com/mundocapoeiraireland

Aargh, again it got too late, so no more writing. I have to send it off and HOPE and pray that the new way of sending the Event Guide is successful. Otherwise I have a serious problem! I will definitely be in Marlay Park this weekend and if possible will make it to Cathy’s Walk. Horse Market is a possibility, but currently I am too tired to consider it SERIOUSLY. :-)
