Hi all!

Again an amazing week for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! Last week I celebrated reaching the milestone of 2000 subscribers and this week….? Have a look at the subscriber number above: Wow! Our Dublin Event Guide Community grew by 170 people! This week we can welcome many Google employees in our community. Hi!!! ;-) There are other companies as well that have joined the community in large numbers. Cawley Nea\TBWA is one example and a big welcome to you too and to everybody else who has joined. And a special thanks this week to Joanne and Grainne! Great stuff! The great thing is that with the increase in numbers our impact as a community of people with a common interest grows and event organisers will take note. That can ONLY be a good thing! :-) The pressure on me grows as well, but I can deal with that!

Mind you, this week it is a bit of a challenge to write the Dublin Event Guide. As most of you know or have guessed, I am not Irish (With THAT name!! ;-) ), instead I am German, but am in Ireland already for many many years. This weekend my parents are here on a short visit and understandably they need to be “looked after”. It is only their second time in Ireland and the last time was many years ago. They arrived late this evening, so I didn’t get started with this week’s Event Guide until late and they are VERY early risers (I definitely did not inherit that!) As a result I expect that I am still writing here when they get up again and I might have to postpone sleep until tomorrow night. :-O Still, I will try to provide the quality information you are used to. :-)))

I try to find confirmation in all cases, however, there are occasionally events that did appear to be free while writing this newsletter but later it turns out that some admission is charged. All information about events is checked as much as possible, however since I mostly relay information from other people or from websites etc, errors can happen and no guarantee for correctness can be given. THE ELVIS PRESLEY SHOW – TICKET COMPETITION
The competition is closed and the winners of the two pairs of tickets will be drawn tomorrow. I got a huge amount of competition entries and because this gig will be brilliant (I told you I am biased!!) I would love to give you all tickets. Unfortunately that is not possible, BUT you can still buy tickets if you are fast! Saturday and Friday are virtually sold out! If you want to hear and see us (I am I am singing in the backing choir of this great Elvis Tribute Band.) you better book your tickets very soon. Thursday is currently the best day as far as ticket availability is concerned!
The Way It Was Orchestra fronted by the brilliant Kevin Doyle and backed by the Gospel Choir in which I am singing is performing The Elvis Presley Story for four nights in the Olympia Theatre. Last year we performed The Elvis Presley Show in the Tivoli Theatre in front of a total of 5000 people, this year we presented the show in the completely sold-out National Concert Hall and if you haven’t seen it yet, you have now the opportunity to come to our even further improved show in the Olympia Theatre. For four nights only we will describe Elvis Presley’s life to you. The Elvis Presley Show in the Olympia is a concert, not a musical or theatre and you will understand Elvis’ life in the context of what describes it best: His songs! The songs are combined and enhanced further with multimedia clips from his life and voiceovers from people that performed or worked with him.

SOPHIE’S CHOICE – COMPETITION
Simon Andreucetti’s fundraising event “Sophie’s Choice” is taking place this Sat (20 Sept). Simon contacted me during the week when he was in hospital again with this little daughter Sophie. Sophie was born with a life threatening condition called Hypopituitarism. This means that her pituitary gland is under developed. When this occurs, the body is unable to produce the hormones necessary in everyday life. Without hormones, you cannot laugh, cry, feel, smell, or engage in any of the normal emotions that we take for granted every day. With medication, these hormones can be replaced to a certain degree, but for example, if Sophie picks up a slight cold it can cause major problems as her brain does not know to send the necessary hormone increase to combat it. The condition also affects the optic nerve meaning that 60% of children born with the condition are born blind. Sophie’s right eye has been affected but luckily she still has full vision in her left eye.
Simon is raising funds for Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin and the event that is named after his daughter will assemble some great bands in the Tivoli on Sat. Performing will Red Kid, Penfold DM, The Hot Sprockets, Lisa McLaughlin, Bill Coleman, Phil Kerrigan and the Headphone Disco. I know Penfold DM (very good!) and listened to MySpace snippets of some of the others and the lineup is definitely impressive. Check them out here:

A RESTLESS LIFE – BOOK COMPETITION
Liberties Press is launching a new book called “A Restless Life” by Leland Bardwell. Leland is an Irish writer, poet and playwright, and A Restless Life is her memoir and it tells of her life growing up in Ireland in the forties, her literary life and associates in London of the fifties and her subsequent return to Dublin in the sixties.
The Irish Protestant child, Leland, was born in India, her family returns to Ireland when she is five years old, settling in Leixlip, Co. Kildare. She is the youngest of the three children and although she is an energetic and inventive child she suffers from a desperate shyness which prohibits her from practically any emotional contact with the adult world, consequently she is ignored and positively disliked by her mother, who finds her ugly and unattractive. This is the start of an interesting life. As an adult Leland’s bohemian attitude is completely at odds with the political and religious institutions that ruled Ireland during those years. Leland also describes life in London during WW2 and later in 50s Soho, as well as Paris and Scotland. Leland is now 87 and the book launch is taking place in the Irish Writers Centre at 19 Parnell Street (next to the Hugh Lane Gallery) at Monday 22 Sept at 18:30. FIFTEEN MINUTES – TICKET COMPETITION
The band Fifteen Minutes (http://www.myspace.com/fifteenmins) is releasing their debut single “Another Self Portrait” on 26 Sept in Radio City (http://www.radiocitydublin.com/) at 20:00. They are releasing the single on their own Shed Records label and will be heading off on a twelve date tour of the country in the coming weeks. FRINGE FESTIVAL -> THEATRE FESTIVAL
The Fringe Festival 2008 is coming to an end, Sunday (21 Sept) is the last day for this year. But on Thursday (25 Sept) the Theatre Festival is already starting. Last year Ulster Bank, the sponsor of the Theatre Festival, invited to a brilliant free outdoor theatre performance on a vertical stage. This year it seems that altruism and generosity is not Ulster Bank’s thing anymore. Pity! There are a few free events, but they are mainly panel discussions. The theatre performances during the festival are in general relatively pricey.

CULTURE NIGHT
This year’s Culture Night this taking place from 17:00-23:00 on Friday 19 September and there are so many events taking place that I could dedicate a whole Event Guide issue to this one single night. It is a brilliant idea and I can’t recommend it strong enough. You should definitely try going to some of the events and I will list a few of them this week and more next week. The website www.culturenight.ie/ lists all events and there is a detailed brochure (with purple front cover) available in some pubs/venues and in the Temple Bar Information Centre (opposite the entrance to the Meeting House Square). Plan your evening beforehand and pick out of the well over 100 events what interests you. Please note that the brochure (PDF version is on the website) does not contain ALL events. There is a whole list of Special Events (www.culturenight.ie/listing.asp?id=40) that didn’t make it into the brochure due to printing deadlines. So use a combination of the website and the brochure.
All events are free and for anybody interested in Culture, this is THE night of the year. :-)

RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL
A super festival packed with free events! Make sure that you check out www.ranelagharts.org! I will list a few of the events below. In addition there are many exhibitions that are free and there will be more events on Saturday and Sunday of next week. If you have a chance, explore Ranelagh!!

CHILEAN NAVAL SHIP IN DUBLIN
The Chilean Naval Ship “Almirante Condell” will be berthed at the Ocean Peer, Alexandra Basin between 17 and 20 September. It will be open to the public on Friday 19 September between 10:00 and 16:00.
The ship is named after Rear Admiral Carlos Condell, offspring of a Scottish merchant officer, who had a distinguished service acting as the Captain of a small wooden corvette during the war of the Pacific, at the end of the 19th century. This ship was handed over to the Chilean Navy the 28th May 2008 in Portsmouth Harbour. It is the former HMS “Marlborough”, the fourth of the modern generation of Type 23 frigates, built by Swan Hunter. The Captain is Jorge Cruz.
For security reasons, Dublin Port will require in advance the names of the people intending to visit the FF “Almirante Condell”. IRISH LANGUAGE LITERATURE FESTIVAL
IMRAM, The Irish language literature festival kicks off in Dublin this week with readings as well as musical performances by Róisín Elsafty, Breandán Begley, Shaun Davey and many others. The festival runs 16-30 September. MANOLO BLAHNIK
Probably something that most girls/women have an interest for: Shoes! For us men it is puzzling and amazing, but then most women wouldn’t understand men’s fascination for football or for high-tech toys. Now here is something for you shoe fanatics: The famous Manolo Blahnik is allegedly planning a trip to come to Dublin in early October to open his new boutique in Brown Thomas (Grafton Street). Maybe bribes for Brown Thomas employees are appropriate to be put on the guest list for the event. ;-)

CITY CHASE
I mentioned the City Chase last week and that I was a “Ring a friend” supporter and one friend, Estelle, did a) take part and b) ring me for some questions. FAKT COMING TO DUBLIN
“FAKT” the popular Polish newspaper (produced by the German editor Axel Springer), is being sold in Dublin from now on as a Dublin edition. Local Irish news and news from Poland will be combined and will make up this new newspaper uniquely targeted at the Polish population in Ireland. Fakt dla Irlandii will cost EUR 1.50

HELEN FARRELL – THE PAUL KANE GALLERY
“Drawings” is Helen Farrell’s solo show with The Paul Kane Gallery. In this show, the drawings and prints – in Helens distinctive style- are all concerned with animals whose relationship with humans is that of protector or guardian. From ‘Roch’,the portrait of a dog informed by the story of St. Roch who was banished from Rome but was kept alive by his dog who went into the city daily and scavenged and brought back food to the banished saint, to the rooks who are responsible in folklore for escorting the souls of the virtuous to heaven. 30TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION – OISÍN GALLERY

Oisín Gallery are celebrating 30 years in business this year. To mark the occasion, the gallery will host a 30th Anniversary Exhibition, held in conjunction with this year’s Culture Night on Friday 19 September.
The exhibition comprises 30 artworks: one from each of the 30 gallery artists and selected invited artists to celebrate each of its 30 years in business.
The exhibition will open between 18:00-22:00, and will be officially launched by the author, Deirdre Purcell. There will be live music and a chance to meet many of the participating artists. EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK – TALLAGHT
South County Dublin (with its centre in Tallaght) invites to a number of Mobility Week events:
On Friday 19 Sept you can join a Tour of the Traffic Management Centre. The public are cordially invited to attend tours of the Traffic Management Centre at 11:00 and 15:00, meeting in the Foyer. This tour will provide an insight into how the traffic section works and gives the public the chance to ask the questions they have always wanted to know.
On Monday 22 SeptMonday 22nd September:
* Change your way today festival.
* Climate Change and Know your Number Roadshow.The team will be on hand to show people how to calculate their carbon count number, to advise on how to reduce their number, and to discuss what impact our daily activities such as how we live, work and travel are having on climate change.
* Smoothie Bicycle Demonstration. The bicycle has been adapted so that it is static, and when the pedals are turned, a blender attached to the back wheel starts blending, making tasty smoothie drinks!
* Health Clinic. A Mobile Health Clinic will operate outside the library providing a free fully equipped Health Screening Service to the public. The Screening will consist of the following:
– Consultation with a Health Professional
– Body Mass Index (Height & Weight ratio)
– Blood Pressure evaluation
– Heart rate measurement
– Lung Function Test
– Lifestyle Counselling
In addition the council has decided to close a section of the Old Blessington Road from its junction with Belgard Square East (Tuansgate Building) to its junction with the Luas Red Line Terminus. The road will be closed from 08:00 until 18:00 and is open solely to pedestrians and cyclists. The area reserved for this purpose will form the site of the “Change Your Way Today” Festival.

From 17:00-23:00 is Culture Night! During the week I was wondering how I could list Culture Night events here in a comprehensive way but without having to list more than 100 events. After thinking about it for a while decided that listing SOME events and dropping others doesn’t make much sense and in the end you might just have preferred the ones that I DIDN’T mention. DAVID WALLIAMS – CULTURE NIGHT
At least three times the name “David Walliams” was mentioned to me and in all cases it was a female melting away when thinking of Walliams. I have to admit that I ha dnever heard the name before this week and still don’t really no what the fuzz is all about, but it seems that half of the population has a soft spot for him, so I will HAVE to tell you about this event: “In conversation with David Walliams” is a free event in the Gate Theatre as part of Dublin Culture Night on Friday 19th September at 18:00. The actor/comedian, and one half of the sketch show Little Britain, David Walliams will talk about his life and career to date with host, Journalist Ciara Dwyer, on stage at the Gate against the backdrop of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land. Walliams will also talk about the publication of his first children’s book, swimming the English Channel for charity and making his stage debut at the Gate opposite acting giant Michael Gamon. www.dublinevents.com/events/theatre/d-williams.php

SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY
Ubuntu Ireland presents and invites to the Software Freedom Day on Sat 20 Sept from 11:00-17:00 at The Digital Exchange, Crane St., Digital Hub, Dublin 8. “Ubuntu Linux is an Operating System (OS) that does the same thing as Windows and Mac OS…except it’s free! A free OS is one where you are not required to pay for anything, there are no restrictions on what you do with the OS (including installing it on multiple machines, sharing it with your friends or selling it on) and if you have the skills and time, you can make any changes you want.”
The Software Freedom Day in Dublin is a family friendly event and kids are explicitly welcome. Throughout the day there will be Hands-on-sessions, games, talks and demonstrations. You can find out “What is Free Software? How you can use it at home, work or at school”, you can “Install and try Ubuntu Linux yourself”, learn about “What does the Ubuntu community in Ireland do?”, meet other Linux novices and experts, find out about how to get involved in your local community and enjoy talks from Google, Irish Freedom software Organisation, Ubuntu Ireland and Camra.

DUBLIN HALF MARATHON
As part of the training and preparation programme for the Marathon in October a number of shorter races and half-marathon took place over the year. ARTBOTS – SCIENCE GALLERY
The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College is inviting to Artbots: The Robot Talent Show. It is a three-day international exhibition of robotic art and art-making robots. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
The 21 Sept is declared by the UN as the International Day of Peace. CZECH MOVIES
Katarina is reminding me of the fortnightly screening og Czech Films on Sundays at 16:30. On Sun 21 Sept the film will be “Divided We Fall” or “Musíme si pomáhat” (www.imdb.com/title/tt0234288/). The film is in Czech and will have English subtitles. The screening takes place in Murray’s, 33 – 35 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 and admission is free.

*Sunday Jazz in The Globe in George’s Street every Sunday from 17:30-19:30.
*Jazz in The George in George’s Street from 16:30-18:00: Jazz Band Zrazy.
*Sunday Roast is the event in Thomas Reads The Oak in Dame Street/Parliament Street every Sunday from 19:00. Provided are free live music, games & roast potatoes.

If you are just looking for Sunday events, please check the event list for Saturday as well. A good few events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday, but it wouldn’t make sense to list them twice.

MOBILITY WEEK – IN TOWN WITHOUT MY CAR
I am a little puzzled by this idea and its execution. I guess it does make sense to have a “In Town Without My Car” on a weekday, but I am not sure people care much about it and I haven’t seen any advertisement or rallying message from the City Council or others, so we can expect that it will fail dismally! The strange thing is, however, that on Mon 22 Sept Merrion Square West will be closed to traffic for the entire day. This is a work day!! So, how likely is it that people will assemble in their masses to come to the events planned for the reserved location include: Library Learning bus, Bio-diversity workshops, Safe Cycle Course, other activities will include BMX cycling, Picnic and Market areas, lunchtime concert, D.T.O. information stand.
Sounds all badly planned!
By the way, the Mobility Week is a European thing, but it explicitly says in the Mobility Week definitions that the day of the “In Town Without My Car” events is up to the choosing of the different countries. So Dublin City can’t claim they had no choice! I would think that workshops, safe cycle course, BMX cycling etc makes more sense at a weekend. Am I wrong?

A RESTLESS LIFE – BOOK LAUNCH
A Restless Life by Leland Bardwell is launched on Monday 22 Sept at 18:30 in the Irish Writers Centre at 19 Parnell Street (next to the Hugh Lane Gallery) at. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane’s (086 3614787) film club is taking place again upstairs in “Russells of Ranelagh”. (On the main street in Ranelagh, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front). The film club screens Irish short films and usually a feature film. Admission is free.
The next screening will be on Mon 15 Sept starting around 19:15 or 19:30. Please ring Howard to confirm the time and to check which films he will show.

FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute “Instituto Cervantes” is showing a series of films exploring the notions of documentary, video-art and avant-garde cinema.

Subterranean experiences in Spanish non-fiction” invites you to explore the murky depths of the contemporary documentary in search of those pieces that cannot quite be labelled or categorised. The films will be shown on 02, 10, 11, 17, 18 + 24 Sept at 18:30 in the Instituto Cervantes in Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 (just opposite the Dental Clinic at the back of TCD). All films are in Spanish with English subtitle. The films are presented by Esperanza Collado, the director of the contemporary art and cinema publication “Spectrum”.

GLOBAL DIMENSIONS SEMINAR
The Global Dimensions Seminar Series organised by the DICE Project is an opportunity to come together bimonthly after work to hear about and discuss contemporary global and intercultural issues that affect us all. Each session is aimed at creating a relaxed and comfortable space after your work day where you can engage with those issues of today that you don’t normally get a chance to engage with. Experienced speakers will be invited to facilitate informal but meaningful discussions about a range of current themes.
The DICE seminar series is aimed at anyone interested in integrating a global dimension to their work day. They will be of special interest to those using development education and intercultural education to raise awareness on issues of global poverty and interculturalism. The seminars will be particularly useful to lecturers, student teachers, educators and facilitators working with issues of global and social justice.
Development and Intercultural Education Project – DICE, works to address the need for global and social justice perspectives within primary education in Ireland.

POLISH JAZZ – RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL
A night of Polish Jazz with Beata and Nightshift on Wed 24 Sept at 21:00 in Birchall’s Pub. (Admission free). Nightshift brings to the festival accomplished Polish jazz, with a hint of Latin American. The ensemble will feature award-winning vocalist Beata Wald. On piano/ keyboards, Sylwester Ochmnski – who has played with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Poznan, as well as with big bands and smaller jazz groups. On percussion, Marcin Helak – a founder member of Nightshift, whose love of jazz has been rekindled since his arrival in Ireland. And all the way from Buenos Aires, adding that Latin American flavour – Patricia Iglesias on bass.

COMMUNICATING CORRUPTION – WORKSHOP
‘The C-Word’ – Communicating Corruption is the title of a workshop organised by Transparency International Ireland on Thurs 25 Sept from 09:30-13:00 at the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre, O’Connell St, Dublin 1. The subtitle is “Highlighting Key Issues and Handling Media Interviews” and the description says “With Simon Devilly, Journalist and former producer RTÉ. The second workshop on the topic of communications and corruption will benefit practitioners with an interest in the current debate around corruption in development and the developing world. Our media facilitator will challenge participants to define messages on corruption and take a strategic approach to getting their message across through the media.”

BREAST CANCER – NATIONAL CONFERENCE
On 27 Sept the National Conference “Surviving Breast Cancer” will take place in the Alexander Hotel in Dublin 2 (near Merrion Square). Europa Donna Ireland, The Irish Breast Cancer Campaign, is holding its 2nd National Conference from 10:00-15:00.
The Conference, which will be opened by Mary Harney, Minister for Health and Children, is aimed at highlighting progress and plans in relation to Specialist Breast Centres in Ireland – one year on from the shocking misdiagnosis revelations of 2007. With over 25,000 women living in Ireland following a diagnosis of breast cancer, the conference will focus on follow-up and advocacy in action.
The conference will be of interest to all with an interest in breast cancer in Ireland, in particular women and family members, support centre staff, volunteers, health care and promotion professionals, policy makers and administrators.
Admission is free, but registration is required.
Speakers include: Judy Caldwell, Founder, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, British Columbia/Yukon Region; Professor Tom Keane, Acting Director of Cancer Control; Professor Niall O’Higgins, Professor Emeritus, University College Dublin;

VIRTUAL EARTH LIVE IN DUBLIN
Microsoft’s Map and Earth picture service “Virtual Earth” has enhanced and redefined this free Internet service that was originally introduced by Google. The cool Bird’s Eye View maps and 3D enhancements mean that a lot of companies are building their web applications on top of Virtual Earth.
On 16 Oct from 09:00 – 17:00, the Microsoft Europe Virtual Earth team are visiting Dublin. They are holding a free one-day seminar to provide you with all the information you require to integrate Virtual Earth into your website to create a user experience that will delight your users. The event it aimed at web developers and is free. It will take place in the Microsoft Building 2 Auditorium in the South County Business Park in Leopardstown.

No pizza for me this week :-) and while I have one or two other odd stories to tell you, I will leave this for next week. Maybe I should add it as a regular category? “Odd Stories” or “Stories that make you shake your head”. By the way, I asked last week if you think it would make sense to have a separate “Events for Children” category in this newsletter. The response was positive throughout and I will introduce this new category over the coming weeks.

Ok, ok, I give in, here is a short “Odd Story”: Last weekend Trinny and Susannah, the so called “style experts”, who present the BBC programme “What Not To Wear” were in Dublin for the expensive-ticketed “Style in the City” event. Trinny (Woodall) greeted the audience with a “Good morning, Dublin! How does it feel to be the best-dressed city in the UK?” No surprise that she didn’t get the expected applause and cheers but rather frozen silence and Boos. When somebody in the audience told her that Dublin was NOT part of the UK, she allegedly excused her ignorance by stating that geography as not her strong point. And we sometimes snigger about reported geography guffaws of American students (www.satirewire.com/news/jan02/geography.shtml – this article is satirical and fictional, but still funny)?
