Event Guide 56: Call Cutta, Flamenco, Dublin Circus Festival, Urban Garden, Urban Beach, Bray Summer Festival
Hi all!
Aargh, where did the sun go??? Doing my day job, I got soaking wet today and I can’t believe that it is mid July and we have to put up with that weather again. If a politician were responsible for it, I would ask for his resignation. ;-) Maybe I DO have to emigrate to Spain! Does anybody want to join me? :-)
The events this week are again plentiful, but some of them just NEED some good weather. Urban Beach is certainly one of them, but the Temple Bar Circus Festival this weekend or Urban Garden on Smithfield Plaza would benefit hugely from some warmer temperatures or much bigger umbrellas. :-P
Some months ago I told you about a brilliant course I attended. It was back in February and many of you hadn’t subscribed yet. Because of this and because the date for a repeat of this course is coming closer and I hear the course is already HEAVILY booked, I will tell you about it again:
By coincidence I came across an invitation to a training course at the end of last year and it caught my attention. It was for a free three-day seminar called “Breakthrough to Success” and is about personal development and NLP. The training is done by Christopher Howard, a hugely inspiring presenter, and I definitely recommend it to everyone. The seminar was brilliant seminar, entertaining, educational and ;-) free! About 600 people were in the RDS in February and with word-of-mouth I expect that the next time the training will take place, maybe double that number of people will attend. However, I know as well that the event might take place in one of the D4 Hotels in Ballsbridge instead of in the RDS. And should that be the case, then the seats are very much limited. This is the reason why I already mention it now, so that you have a chance to book in time. You probably wonder what the catch is and if it is REALLY free. Well, there is no catch, the seminar is really free. But you should know that the intention is to advertise the Christopher Howard Seminars and to get people to book other courses. So over the three days you do have to live with some “sales and advertisement” interludes. Since there is the opportunity to learn a LOT and because it is by no means heavy or pushy sales or advertisement, it is not very difficult to live with it. You will learn about setting goals, you will find out how you limit yourself in life, what holds you back and what do do/change to have a hugely increased chance to reach your goals in life.
Chris Howard will be back from the 17-19 Oct this year and you can register already by following this link:
champions.christopherhoward.co.uk/ukbts.asp?cli=CLA1035324
The 3-day course is formally sold for GBP 825 per person and by following the link above you will get it for free. But I doubt that ever anybody has paid for the course, the pro-forma price is more a marketing aid.
You might wonder why I recommend it so much and if I gain if you follow the above link. And here is the answer: I did definitely learn a good few things and was reminded of many other things. The seminar is hugely motivational and it was fun. I think taking part would be hugely beneficial for everybody and that is the reason why I recommend it. Regarding me gaining: If you follow the above link you are referred by me and should you book a paid-for course, I would get up to 10% of the fees, but since that is not very likely (the courses are very expensive) and since I would be happily to share this referral reward with you, I have no moral problems recommending the event. :-) At the moment approx. 50 other Dublin Event Guide Community Members are already registered and if you want to join us, book here:
champions.christopherhoward.co.uk/ukbts.asp?cli=CLA1035324
And now swiftly on to this week’s events! :-)

CALL CUTTA IN A BOX – PLAY/PERFORMANCE
List to his scenario: “You are shown to a room into an office building where the telephone is already ringing. You answer the phone, and you are caught up in a conversation with a voice that has a strange accent. You sit down at a table in front of a computer monitor and your telephone partner sits the same way, 10,000 kilometers away from you. The voice belongs to a call centre employee at Descon Ltd. in Kolkata, India.”
This is the story around the play/performance of “Rimini Protocol” which is taking place at the moment in the Dublin Docklands Development Authority office, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 (beside Sean O’Casey Bridge).
Interesting? Strange? Intriguing? Tempting? I think all of this! The Project Arts Centre (www.project.ie), in cooperation with the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, is presenting this play and says “..an experience you will never forget: Call Cutta In A Box – An International Telephone-Play”.
You can win tickets for it! The Project Arts Centre made TWO pairs of free tickets available for you (Thanks!) and all you have to do to win them is to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Project” and your name and mobile phone number in the subject. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Monday 14 July. The two winners will then be able to arrange for a suitable time, because the “play” is performed many many times:
The play is taking place from 01 July – 26 July from 14:00-19:00 every day (except Sundays). It lasts just about an hour and will start anew every hour. The free tickets have to be used between the 15 July and the 19 July.
For all other Dublin Event Guide Community Members or if you don’t want to leave it to luck, the Project Arts Centre is offering a discount. The shows normal price is EUR 10, but if you quote “EUR 5 offer” when you book over the phone on 01-881 9613, you can watch the play for half the normal price. www.project.ie
(The Sean O’Casey bridge is the pedestrian bridge near George’s Dock and the DDDA offices are on the north side right beside the bridge.)
FLAMENCO WORKSHOP
Regular readers know that Sólo Flamenco, a talented and extremely nice group of Irish-based Flamenco dancers, regularly conduct workshops and that they often make some tickets available for free to readers of the Event Guide. I appreciate their support very much and can only recommend their courses. I only heard good things and – as a total non-dancer – am even considering trying it myself. :-)
On 20 July from 13:00-17:00 Sólo Flamenco are again holding a workshop with Felipe de Algeciras, an acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher. The workshop takes place in Studio 2 in the DanceHouse, Foley St, Dublin 1.
The schedule for the day is
13:00-14:00 Beginners (for dancers with up to 18 months experience), EUR 15
14:00-15:00 Technique (Technique), EUR 15
15:00-17:00 Intermediate (for dancers with 18 months experience or more), EUR 30
Each class is limited to 30 students, so advance booking (Damian at 086 81 46 496 or info@flamencoyalegria.net) is necessary.
Sólo Flamenco have made a pair of tickets for the Beginners class available and you can win them! All you need to do is to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Flamenco” and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me at 13:00 on Thurs 17 July.
TANGO CLASSES
The pair of tickets for the beginner’s Tango Class on Mon 14 July was won by Cathy Albanese! Congratulations! And just briefly here again the details:
Natural Tango are running Tango classes every Monday in Turk’s Head in Parliament Street, near Temple Bar. The classes are 19:30-20:30 Beginners, 20:30-21:30 Intermediate-Advanced followed by a Tango Club from 21:30 to practise what you have learned. The classes are drop-in classes and you don’t need a partner to participate. The cost for a class (Beginners or Intermediate/Advanced) PLUS entry to the Tango Club is EUR 10 and you don’t need to pre-book.
There are Saturday courses as well in Liberty Hall and you find all details about them on naturaltango.blogspot.com
All events in this Competition section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I get often lots of entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, but you should consider going anyway! :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
Dublin will experience an exodus this weekend! Hoards or people are leaving the city to bring their wellies to the Punchestown Racecourse where the Oxegen Festival will take place. If you are not going, never mind, it means there is more room for you at all the many events in Dublin. :-)
I know that some of you went to the Smithfield Farmers Market last Saturday and were very disappointed to find only two stands there in the rain. If you had the same experience or in case you plan to go to Smithfield in the coming weeks, please note that most of the stands (at least on a bad-weather-day) are INSIDE in one of the buildings on the western end of the plaza. The “Indoor Outdoor Market” at Smithfield as a big “Indoor” component, hence the name! ;-) Padraig, Orla and Ann, you better go back and look for the “Indoor” part this time. :-P
The Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) has and is doing a great job to a) transform the Docklands in to a vibrant part of the city and b) to enhance the cultural life in Dublin significantly with events and festivals. The Maritime Festival, Urban Beach, Fun Runs, Cycle Tours and the Christmas Market are only a small number of great events. However the DDDA don’t always get it right. About two weeks ago they launched DockNet, a wireless Internet service in the Docklands, and the charges seem to be totally beyond of what normal people would nowadays pay for Internet access. One hour costs EUR 6, seven days are available for the bargain price of EUR 60! It doesn’t help much that 10 websites are accessible for free. Not too often I would feel the urgent need to visit welfare.ie or dublinbus.ie or dubsimon.ie while roaming around in the docklands. There was a great opportunity to provide a completely free service in this part of the city (maybe sponsored by online-advertisement) to give the docklands an edge that no other part of the city has, but that opportunity was not taken. Will DockNet be a success? I have serious doubts! www.ddda.ie/index.jsp?aID=806&nID=105&pID=94
I will leave this message here from last week, so that you don’t forget to check the Farmleigh House website to order your free tickets:

From 26 June – 29 Sept the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square North is exhibiting the Hugh Lane Bequest. Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane first opened its doors in Clonmell House, Harcourt Street, on 20 January 1908. It was known as The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and presented an acclaimed collection brought together by Hugh Lane and his supporters. As a result of a disagreement with Dublin over the location of the gallery, Hugh Lane gave his collection to the National Gallery in London. Now in the centenary year (100th birthday) of the exhibition, the ‘Hugh Lane 100 Years’ is an exhibition of the entire collection of 39 paintings known as the Hugh Lane Bequest of 1917. Spaces for the workshop are limited.” www.farmleigh.ie
URBAN BEACH – GEORGE’S DOCK
“Life is a Beach!” is the theme for Dublin Dockland’s Urban Beach. George’s Dock (just behind the main IFSC buildings along the Liffey and right beside the chq building) will be transformed into Dublin’s first Urban Beach. The organiser’s description says “This tropical oasis will be the home to sizzling summer activities for the whole family. Complete with beach cabins, showers, lounge chairs, beach umbrellas, and a refreshment beach hut, the beach will have daily activities to suit everyone’s fancy. Kiddies will have their own ‘baby beach’ area for making sandcastles. Spend lunchtime practising yoga or tai chi, play a relaxing game of chess, try your hand at boules or bocce or just soak in the sunshine. Oh the lazy, hazy days of summer, let’s hope we have some!”
I had a look at the Urban Beach while it is still “under construction” and I will definitely go there again over the next two weeks. The “beach” is on the platform in George’s Dock and I am interested to see how the finished scene will look like. An interesting idea! Pity that the weather in Ireland is not the most supportive for such good ideas. The Urban Beach will take place from 04 July -20 July from 12:00-20:00 every day.
As far as evening events are concerned I found this list for themed beach parties: Tango Night (10+17 July), Brazilian Night (11+18 July), Salsa Night (12+19 July). All special events are free, but there is limited capacity, so you should come early. www.dublindocklands.ie/urbanbeach

Please note: If it rains there will be only a few stands outside, but there is a large indoor area that houses lots more stands. Currently the market has approx 30 stands.
TEMPLE BAR MARKETS
And as always: Don’t forget that the Temple Bar Markets (Temple Bar Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Temple Bar Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-17:00.
MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screening on Saturday in Temple Bar will take place at 22:30 and the film will be “Borat”. You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 05 June and could be all handed out, but it is worth trying). Tickets can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Open Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30, Sat 10:00-18:00, Sun 12:00-15:00. www.templebar.ie/home_nav_2_t_13.html. On the night a small number of people without tickets will be let in if ticket holders don’t show up. So, you could try getting in that way, even if you don’t have tickets.

Sunday Jazz will be provided in The Globe in George’s Street every Sunday from 17:00.
Sunday Roast is the event in Thomas Reads The Oak in Dame Street/Parliament Street every Sunday from 19:00. On offer are free live music, games & roast potatoes.
WEEKEND EVENTS
If you are just looking for Sunday events, please check the event list for Saturday as well. A good few events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday, but it wouldn’t make sense to list them twice.

JUNIOR CHAMBER TABLE QUIZ
Kristy Clarke from the Junior Chamber International Dublin (JCI) informed me about a table quiz they are running to raise funds for a charitable cause. As you know, based on the “free” event rule, I normally only list fundraising events if a few free tickets, can be made available. In this case the JCI is using another exception from the free rule: If an organiser is running free events, then I am happy to advertise an occasional non-free event for them as well. Kristy promised me that we will be kept informed about the upcoming other JCI events. By the way, the “Junior” in JCI is relatively liberal and age boundaries of 18-40 are specified, so that is nicely Inclusive. Have a look at www.jcidublin.com. And here is the event:
“Test your Random Knowledge Table Quiz”. Junior Chamber International Dublin is organizing a Table Quiz in aid of the UN’s ‘Nothing but Nets’ campaign against Malaria. The event is at Break for the Boarder (Lower Stephen’s Street, Dublin 2) on Thursday 17 July at 19:00. Cost is EUR 40 for a team of 4. The night will include a performance by the Rwandan dance group ‘Inkindi H Inganzo’. Learn more about the ‘Nothing but Nets’ campaign at www.jcidublin.com.
SANTORIA – Q BAR
The Soulband Santoria will play on Thur 17 July from 22:00 in the Q Bar near O’Connell Bridge. Admission is free. www.santoria.ie/santorialive.html

And some pre-announcements:
DAMBÈ (IRISH/MALIAN CONCERT) – TEMPLE BAR
A night of Irish and African musical celebrations is taking place on 23 July as part of the Documentary Film – Dambé – The Mali Project. For one night only Malian, Tuareg and nomadic culture and music will be celebrated with a line up of special Irish and Malian musicians from the film. Artists performing on the night include Afel Bocoum and Alkibar, Liam O’Maonlaí, Paddy Keenan and Tinariwen plus special guest Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. This is a free event and all profits will go towards the Tuareg fund for development Taghreft Tinariwen and the hospital in Niafunké (hometown of Afel and Alkibar). Tickets will be available from Monday 30 June at the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Dublin 2. For further information contact Lindsey /Susan/Deirdre @ LHP 01 4970313 or Luachra Productions on 6772255 ext 206.
It confuses me slightly that it says that the event is free and in the same sentence they say that all profits will go to the Tuareg fund etc. So, maybe double-check with the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre (01 677 2255) before you go there to collect tickets.
BABYLON RADIO – LAUNCH PARTY
The BabylonRadio Launch Party will celebrate the launch of the new Babylon Radio Website and the BabylonRadio Webradio station. FRESH FILM FORUM
On Sat 19 July from 11:00-13:00 the Fresh Film Forum takes place. It is part of the Lights Out Festival, a film festival for young people. If you are interested in becoming a successful young filmmaker, you should attend this forum. “The forum will be hosted by former and current winners of the Fresh Film Festival: Donal Foreman, Helena Doyle, Patrick Ryan, Justine Stafford, Bryan O’Sullivan and Santana Hernandez-Power. At this special event, you will get a chance to watch films made by these talented young filmmakers, who will then share their knowledge of the filmmaking process and chart how they progressed from festival winners to film students and beyond!” The Forum is free and open to all but you have to reserve your place in advance with the IFI box office on 01 679 3477.

I hope you will find at least one event that you like! 5m2 was the event for me that was special in the last week. It was a brilliantly organised and very interesting art project. There was a great buzz about it and it was really enjoyable. I hope you will find an event this week that you will remember for a while. :-)
Enjoy the weekend!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that ticketed events have a better chance to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent to anybody who is interested for free and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) just follow this link to PayPal: tinyurl.com/68dmlq. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Event Guide is possible, please contact me for more information.
