Hi all!

Hurray, it’s May! :-) No, no, May is not a special month in my yearly calendar, BUT, it does or should bring us closer to the good weather. Well, that is the theory! ;-) Either way, it brings us closer to the festival season, and I can tell you that with the help of this Event Guide you will be kept busy this year. The Dublin City Soul Festival end of this month is the first of the bigger outdoor festivals and over the summer there will be the Maritime Festival in the Docklands, the Street Performance World Championship, the Bray Summer Festival, the Temple Bar Circus Festival and the Festival of World Cultures to just list a few! This week I have compiled a long list of events for you again and I hope you will enjoy them.

The spam classification of this newsletter is still a problem, so if you find it in your Spam folder and don’t know what to do about it, send me a mail and I will let you know the best way of dealing with it.

By the way, keep me posted about free events that you come across. I get more and more e-mails with event announcements and it will all help to give you the best possible spectrum of events. Hopefully everybody finds at least one event per week that is worth reading this Event Guide. :-)

And finally: In the context of our Elvis Tribute concerts this weekend, we were on the Ray D’arcy show on Today FM on Tuesday morning. There was a short interview with Kevin Doyle and then we played and sang the Kool and the Gang song “Get Down On It” for the upcoming Today FM CD “Even Better Than The Disco Thing”. You might wonder why it wasn’t an Elvis song? Well, these are the TodayFM rules. :-) In order to promote our concerts they want a contribution to their CD. We happily helped out. :-) Now maybe you can help with this. I know it is a VERY “long shot” (term loaned from golf, meaning it is unlikely to be successful), but did maybe anybody of you record that programme? We were on air from approx. 11:10-11:20 on Tues 29 April and I would love to get my hands on a recording.

ELVIS CONCERT
I am just back from our final rehearsal (I sing in the backing choir) before tomorrow’s concert in the Red Cow Complex. Ray Walker rehearsed with us and kept us entertained with jokes and stories. He is a great guy, a brilliant singer and full of stories about his time with Elvis and the other Jordanaires.
You have an opportunity to see and hear us and him. Don’t miss it. The competition has been decided and the winners are Ciara Harrison, Ann McDonnell, David Harrington and Erica Barber. Congratulations to all of you and I hope to see you on Friday or on Sunday. :-)
If your name wasn’t drawn, you can still come! I hear there are still some tickets available and I recommend you ring the ticket line as soon as possible (01-4593650). The tickets for the event are 30 Euro per person.
You will get a chance to meet Ray Walker (who sang with Elvis for 13 years, and still sings with the Jordanaires) and Jerry Schilling (a close friend of Elvis’ for 20 years and the former manager of The Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis), in addition you can see the film of the “68 Special”, one of the first “unplugged” TV concerts and one of Elvis Presley’s most important gigs because it was the start of his comeback in 1968. And to top it all, you will be there for a 2-hour concert of Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir. The event will take place on Friday 02 May and on Sunday 04 May and is organised by the Elvis Social Club. Doors will open at 19:00 on both nights. WAGAMAMA VOUCHER
Only valid until the end of today (Fri 02May) is a Wagamama voucher for a free juice. But in case you haven’t finalised your dinner arrangements for tonight, maybe it will tempt you. www.wagamama.ie/emarketing/vouchers/ Wagamama is the Asian restaurant underneath the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre (coming from Grafton Street pass by the Gaiety Theatre and then watch out for the stairs down to the restaurant on your left). The food is good, the prices are reasonable and the style of the restaurant is very unique. Booking is no required (not even possible as far as I know), but you might have to queue for a little while.

BT VOUCHER – BOGUS
Speaking of vouchers, a very nice and well-meaning person sent me a Brown Thomas voucher this week. It was a voucher that was meant to offer anybody presenting it a 25% discount. It came in a Word Document, but looked reasonably genuine but something was suspicious about it so I checked with BT and was told that it is fake, bogus, a hoax and that they won’t accept these vouchers in the shop. ..just in case you got one and had planned to spend your life savings in BT this weekend…

DUBLIN DANCE FESTIVAL – FILM SCREENING
The Arts Council and RTÉ got together to bring television viewers four short dance films courtesy of RTÉ Dance On The Box. They will be premiered on RTÉ Two as part of the Festival, starting on Monday 28 April, and then screened in the open air in Dublin’s Meeting House Square. The four films produced through RTÉ Dance On The Box for the last Dance Festival in 2006 were watched by over half a million viewers and went on to over thirty dance and film festivals around the world. This year’s four films will be streamed on the RTÉ Dance On The Box website. But if you prefer to see them outside in Temple Bar you can do so on Fri+Sat (02-03 May) from 22:00 on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar.

ART, PIETY AND MEMORY OF DEAD – TALK

BUCK TAYLOR EXPERIENCE – CONCERT IN GASWORKS
The Gasworks Bar (former Kitty O’Shea’s) is continuing their Fridays of live music.
Tonight (Fri) Buck Taylor will present his programme “The Buck Taylor Experience”. Taylor is a James Brown impersonator and going by the song samples on his website, he is really really good. SANTORIA – ZANZIBAR CONCERT
Santoria, a great soul band is playing in Zanzibar, Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1 on Fri 02 May from 19:00. www.santoria.ie/santorialive.html After finding this reference, I found another reference to Santoria performing at 22:00 in Quinlan’s in Clondalkin Village (not sure if free!). Well, it is technically and logistically possible, but I have certain doubts that they will do both concerts. Maybe check with the venues if you want to hear Santoria.

The Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery is showing “Selected Works” by Anthony Caro from 01-24 May 2008. The exhibition will span the period 1977 to 2005 and focus on steel and bronze works. NCAD 3RD YEAR PAINTINGS – BROADSTONE STUDIOS
From 30 Paril – 03 May the NCAD 3rd year students exhibition “InDecision” will take place in the Broadstone Studios. Broadstone describes: “It showcases the work of twenty five artists who have been brought together by their time at the NCAD National College of Art and Design) and it marks a crucial point in a complex journey for these artists, a journey that has involved the most rigorous of conceptual debate, the broadest of subjects and concepts, and a multiplicity of media. What we have here is the synthesis of all this experience. It represents a group that has no collective style or any particular departure points in terms of content, but that is exactly what it is all about. It is about differences. Each has a sense of identity, and individualism.”

CONCOURSE OFFSITE – DUN LAOGHAIRE-RATHDOWN
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office is showing “Concourse Offsite”, an exhibition of site specific artworks by Aoife Desmond, Mark Garry and Alan Phelan for Blackrock Park. From Thurs 01 May – Sun 01 June 2008 these three artists show their artworks for the outdoor location of Blackrock Park.
Artists Aoife Desmond, Mark Garry and Alan Phelan were invited to respond to ideas of transience and impermanence within the context of Blackrock Park. The exhibition coincides with DLR County Council’s redevelopment plan for the park, which will see the Victorian open space transformed and modernised. www.dlrevents.ie/events.htm

TALLAGHT COMMUNITY ARTS GROUP – EXHIBITION
“ARThritis!” is the group exhibition of Ann Lavalle, Josephine Killalee, Patricia Kelly & Marie McEvoy. It is on show from 01-30 May in the Tallaght Community Arts Centre. TCA (Tallaght Community Arts) presents an exhibition of large scale paintings by patients from the hospital’s Rheumathology Department as part of the Bealtaine Festival – a festival celebrating creativity in an older age.
The paintings were created as part of an art project for patients at the hospital. The purpose of the project is to give patients from the Rheumatology Department the opportunity to explore their experiences through visual arts. KARA WAXMAN – CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY
From 01-11 May the Chester Beatty Library is showing the Fulbright Exhibition by Kara Waxman. CREATE – THISISNOTASHOP
From 01-03 May the Inter Art College Learning Development Programme 2008 is presenting “Create” in the Thisisnotashop Gallery. It is an exhibition of work from students who undertook the learning development placement programme exploring collaborative arts practice. Thirty four students were placed with a variety of groups and organisations over a seven week period in spring of 2008. This programme is managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts, on behalf of the participating colleges of the National College of Art and Design, Institute of Art, Design and Technology – Dun Laoghaire, Fine Art Faculty – Dublin Institute of Technology and Tisch School of Performing Arts – New York University.

BREON O’CASEY . PEPPERCANISTER GALLERY
From 01-21 May the Peppercanister Gallery shows a Breon O’Casey exhibition of recent bronzes and paintings, marking the occasion of the artist’s 80th birthday.
O’Casey is highly respected as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, jeweller and weaver. However he has been concentrating predominantly on painting and sculpture for the last number of years.

BRAY JAZZ FESTIVAL
The Bray Jazz Festival is this year celebrating its ninth birthday and it is the first time that I hear about it! :-O Over the whole weekend there are 14 non-free events and an impressive number of free events. So if you have any interest in Jazz, get yourself to a DART station and make your way down to Bray!
The free events are:
—Royal Jazz Matinee with Touché (Denmark) on Sat 03 May at 14:30 in the Royal Hotel in Bray. Touché are an “a-capella jazz ensemble (14 singers), known for its big band-like arrangements, awesome swing and tender ballads.”
—Royal Jazz Matinee with “Mouthpiece – Fuzzy Logic & Tom Arthurs”. “Fuzzy Logic is one of Ireland’s most ambitious jazz ensembles, a group of 10 of our finest young jazz and classical artists coming together to perform the music of composer Dylan Rynhart.”

DUBLIN GAY THEATRE FESTIVAL
Another potentially offending word in this headline as far as spam checkers are concerned especially if mentioned numerous times, but I just have to risk it. However, in the following I will abbreviate the word with Gy and you have to add the “a” in the middle yourself, it might keep this mail out of the spam folders.
The Dublin Gy Theatre Festival has a nice brochure containing all the events and with that are not much different to other festivals. However, in addition to that brochure, they have printed a separate brochure that is labelled “Free! Theatre and Events”. Now this is the service I would like to see from all others too. It makes my work a lot easier. :-)
The festival runs from 05 -18 May and you can find the full program on www.gaytheatre.ie. Here, I will list the two free events for this week:
—Gy Poster Artwork (01-31 May) in Front Lounge, Parliament Street. Exhibition of posters of all the plays that can be seen at this year’s festival.
—Dancing with the minotaur” (Mon 05 May, 15:00) in The George, Georges Street. The start of a free festival of New Irish Writing, which will take place on every weekend during the festival. The first one is “Dancing with the monitaur”.
There are six more free events next week and I will list them in next week’s Event Guide.

ELVIS NIGHT
Staying with the Elvis theme, but changing the event and organiser: The Sub lounge (former O’Reilly’s) under the Tara St DART Station is announcing an Elvis Night on Sat 03 May. I wasn’t able to find out what exactly this entails, but some of you might be interested. If you want to find out more from the Sub lounge, ring 01-6716769.
Their website www.sublounge.ie unfortunately doesn’t give anything away. Ok, they do say that there is no cover charge fro the Sub lounge, so that IS relevant. :-)

TECHNOTHREADS – SCIENCE GALLERY
The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street DART Station) is still showing TechnoThreads: “Shirts that send hugs from a loved one, spray-on dresses and semi-living clothes. This is not a scene from a science fiction movie, but from the new exhibition TechnoThreads. TechnoThreads is all about the creative sparks that fly when the worlds of fashion and science collide. The exhibition, running from 26th April – 26th July 2008, offers you a glimpse into the future of fashion in a world where Biotech and Nanotech are combined with traditional craft and Haute Couture skills. CITY FESTIVAL
One of these events where there is no clue if it is free or not. Quite annoying because it takes me a long time to search and cross-search and in the end I am still none the wiser. So I will et you check it out for yourself. There is a small chance that it is free: www.myspace.com/kettleclub

CUBA AFTER CASTRO – DISCUSSION
The Cuba Support Group “Craobh Baile Muna: Cuba Support Group” invites individuals and organisation from all political backgrounds to come and partake in a Questions & Answers Session on Saturday 3rd May in Setanta GAA Club in Ballymun on the issue of ‘Cuba: After Castro’. They say “We would like a broad, cross the board based debate from all political identities on the issue of Cuba. The main participant at the Q & A session will be the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland; Noel Carrillo, and we would very much encourage and appreciate if any representative(s) or individuals can make it along. The day will also consist of showing the Cuban Ambassador around the Redevelopment Scheme of Ballymun through a brief tour, and an introduction to Setanta GAA Club which does great work in encouraging Hurling, Camogie and sport among the youth in Ballymun. Anyone wishing to attend the Q & A session should come along to Setanta G.A.A. Club in Ballymun (Beside Ballymun Library, close to DCU) at 14:30 on Saturday. NATURAL HISTORY – NATIONAL MUSEUM
You might know that the Natural Museum is closed until further notice and that it is expected that this could last up to 3 years…or longer! The first problem was that some stairs collapsed in the museum. Then the repair was deemed to complex to be done in a short time frame and because another renovation process was planned anyway the museum remained closed. Now, it seems that the members of the Irish Seanad, the relatively powerless Irish senate would like to claim this beautiful building for themselves. I hope that they won’t be successful, because as the Natural Museum it was a great place. Full of character and in the way you would imagine an ANCIENT museum.
During the closure, the people from the National Museum had seemingly the clever idea to move the educational programme to one of the other museums:
On Sat 03 May from 11:00 – 12:00 an educational programme for children between 7 and 12 will take place. It is called “Natural History Mystery!” and is described as “a fun activity investigating animals close up!” Because the Natural Museum is closed the event will take place in the National Museum of Ireland-Archaeology in Kildare St. www.museum.ie/events/details_events.asp?eventid=1747&site_id=0

STORYTELLING – FAMILY PROGRAM, NATIONAL GALLERY
The National Gallery offers a regular Saturday Family Program. This Sat 03 May from 15:00-16:00 the theme is “Storytelling”. The programme is free and is suitable for children from 4 -10 working together with the accompanying adult. The number is limited to 70 (first come first served) and it will take place in the Baroque Gallery. www.nationalgallery.ie
In addition there are Family Packs available on Monday 05 May from 15:00-16:00. Family Packs contain drawing equipment and activity sheets so that the whole family can enjoy drawing and creating together. Go to the Information Desk in the Millennium Wing for more information.

SPEAKERS SQUARE
I have never experienced it and I need you to tell me if it is still on: In 2004 the Speaker’s Square project was launched and I read that every Sunday from 14:00-18:00 “ranters, ravers, poets and debaters” are still welcome to speak up on Temple Bar Square. The website speakerssquare.org is unfortunately defunct and I have never seen anybody there ranting and raving (apart from drunks on a Saturday night), but I have a flyer in front of me that I picked up just last week in the Temple Bar Information Centre! So is it still taking place or not? Does anybody know?

THE ALARMS – FILM SCREENING
Mark Cantan informed me that there will be a free screening of the new feature film “The Alarms: A Story in Words” on Sunday 04 May, upstairs in the Ha’Penny Bridge Inn from 16:00-18:00. The film is an Irish spoof documentary about a band from the mid-nineties whose unscrupulous manager turned them into one of the most famous bands on the planet for all the wrong reasons. There’s plenty of laughs to be had in this unique film with an original approach to story telling and toilet humour.

ELVIS PRESLEY TRIBUTE CONCERT :-)

AMARCORD – CONCERT
The ensemble amarcord was founded in autumn 1992 by former members of St. Thomas Boys Choir of Leipzig. The current line-up comprises Wolfram Lattke (tenor), Martin Lattke (tenor), Frank Ozimek (baritone), Daniel Knauft (bass) and Holger Krause (bass). In 2002, amarcord won the German Music Competition for Chamber Music in Bonn. Today the five men are one of the leading German vocal ensembles. The programme “Hear The Voice” will include a variety of songs from the last 1000 years. Starting in the middle age with a work by the composer Hildegard von Bingen they will give a focus on the 15th and 16th century (e.g. antiphones by Sixt Dietrich and Johann Stahel) and later on present some modern songs, e.g. “Drei Gedichte von Paul Celan“, written by Marcus Ludwig in 1997.
The event will take place on Sun 03 May at 20:00 in St. Finian’s Lutheran Church, 24 Adelaide Road, Dublin 2. Admission is free.

Certainly not an event, but still good to know ;-): Dublin City does NOT enforce Pay & Display parking rules on bank holidays. This means, that you can park for free in the City Centre (if you find a spot) and won’t be clamped. Don’t park in bus lanes or in Loading Bays, though. In these locations you still can be clamped.

During May, Christ Church Cathedral is offering a number of lunch time lectures every Tuesdays 13:15. They are all inked to the restoration of the Christ Church Cathedral from 1871-1878. On 06 May, the topic is “The George Edmund Street

NCAD CORE STUDENT EXHIBITION
Ciara Harrison told me that the Core students (i.e. first year of the four-year degree courses) in NCAD are having their end of year exhibition on the 06, 07 and 08 May. She told me that the exhibition is open to the public and is free and she said “….oh and it’ll be brill!” :-) So have a look at this exhibition! Slight problem is that I couldn’t find any reference to it neither on the NCAD website nor anywhere else and therefore I don’t know where the exhibition will take place. NEW SOUND WORLDS – CONCERTS
Two free concerts take place in the Printing House, Dublin, during May as part of the New Sound World series. The first concert takes place on 6 May when the Smith Quartet and pianist Mary Dullea perform music by Thomas Adès, Conlon Nancarrow and White Man Sleeps by Kevin Volans. This is followed by a performance on 8 May by pianist Rolf Hind. The programme for this concert includes music by Claudia Molitor, Henry Cowell, Per Nørgård, Marco Stroppa, Chris Dench and Flux by Simon Mawhinney. WORLD ASTHMA DAY – PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING
To mark World Asthma Day on Tuesday May 6th, the Asthma Society of Ireland will hold a free public information meeting in Dublin for people with asthma, and their family members, offering practical advice on understanding and managing the effects of asthma during the summer months. The meeting will address “Asthma and your Environment”, “Asthma, Allergy and Diet” and “Top Tips to Managing your Asthma” with expert speakers presenting on each topic. SPANISH FILM SCREENING – CATHARSIS ETC
The Instituto Cervantes (Spanish Cultural Institute) will show the short films “Catharsis”, “Saliva”, “Nitbus”, “La Dama en el umbral”, “Primeros Auxilios” and “Niños que nunca existieron” on Wed 07 May at 18:30. The film screening is free and the films will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

RELIGION IN IRELAND – THE DUBLINER DEBATE
The Dubliner is inviting to their first debate for the years on Wed 07 May at 19:00 sharp in the Odessa club. Tickets are free and there will be a drinks reception after the debate. Unfortunately I don’t know if there are still tickets available (issued in pairs!), but if you contact rsvp@thedubliner.ie, you will find out. The topic of the debate is “This house believes that Ireland needs religion now more than ever.” Supporting this are Joe Foyle, an economist who has just published an anti-secularist pamphlet, Gerard Casey, former head of the Philosophy Department at UCD, and the columnist John Waters, whose recent book, Lapsed Agnostic, explores his journey from doubt to faith. Opposing the view are Senator Ivana Bacik, who is also the Reid Professor of Law at TCD, Emer O’Kelly of the Sunday Independent, and Abie Philbin Bowman from The Dubliner. Moderated and controlled will be the discussion by John Ryan.

PREM RAWAT – DVD SCREENING
Prem Rawat (Maharaji) an allegedly renowned speaker who “has travelled the globe extensively for more than thirty years delivering his message of peace to people from all walks of life.” will NOT be in Dublin for that event, instead it sill be a “DVD Presentation of Prem Rawat speaking on the subject of finding inner peace and contentment”. The event takes place on Wed 07 May (20:00) and seemingly every Wednesday after that in Cassidy’s Hotel (Lir Suite), Cavendish Row, Upr. O’Connell Street (opposite Gate Theatre). I have never heard the name Prem Rawat and can therefore only quote the information that I found, but can’t comment on it. I suggest that you inform your self here maharaji.net/index.html and from alternative sources of information (e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Prem_Rawat) before you attend the event. SHIFTS – BEYOND THE VISIBLE – BOOK LAUNCH
Ninna Gay is a photographer who has exhibited her work for eleven years. She has also been on a constant spiritual quest for two decades and became an energy medicine practitioner. From 1999, her spiritual journey transcended her photographic work when she realized that her cameras allowed her to capture manifestations of the unseen world. Such interesting photographs open a window into other dimensions of reality, and they can be correlated with a research for meaning, understanding or discovery of the unseen world surrounding us.
Shifts – Beyond the Visible is the combination of her work as an energy practitioner and artist. Ninna Gay is originally from the South-East of France and has been living in Ireland for sixteen years.
The book launch is taking place on Thurs 08 May 2008 a t 18:00 in the Alliance Française, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

EGG & SPOON RACE – DUBLIN IMPROV
The Dublin Improv Movement has been busy planning the next event and to make sure that you will be available, I am listing it already this week. It will take place next Saturday and I will remind you again in the next Event Guide, but put it in your diary!
Brian Lenehan told me this:
“Dublin Improv Movement, who first came together for a mass-freeze on Grafton Street on the 23rd February, are inviting you and your friends to our “Sports Day” egg-and-spoon race down Henry Street on Saturday, 10th May, at 14:00. All are welcome.” The title is “Performance Art: Slow-Mo Fun Sports Day” and the location for the meeting is Location: Henry St., Dublin 1 (near the Butlers Chocolates Cafe beside the Spire).
Brian continues: “We need as many people (all Dublin Improv members, friends, family and any other randomers) to gather together at the O’Connell Street end of Henry Street at 14:00 exactly. Don’t hang around that spot for too long before-hand, wait around O’Connell St., elsewhere on Henry St., etc (just don’t congregate for too long in the one spot at the meeting-point). Look sporty. If you can, use the “11850 men” as inspiration wearing vests, shorts, sweat-bands, etc., or track-suit or whatever else you like. Bring a desert-spoon and an egg (hard-boiled preferably). If you can’t get a boiled-egg, a raw (not boiled) potato, or kiwi will do. At 14:00 exactly, we will start running with spoons and eggs out-stretched before us IN SLOW MOTION down Henry Street, all the way to the junction of Jervis Street, where we will cross over to the little park (Wolfe Tone Square) to have the prize-giving ceremony. It should take around twenty minutes to “run” the distance. We’ll have a finishing-line always no more than 10metres ahead of the head of the race, so as to let spectators know that we’re coming.”
So, put the event in your diary and come to it next week! It will be fun!

ST PETERSBURG COMES TO DUBLIN
From 13-16 May Dublin will be offering a range of cultural events and activities with a Russian (St. Petersburg) theme. The organiser, Dublin City, unfortunately continues their well-practised behaviour from previous years of organising BRILLIANT evnts bad of badly publicising them, so it is not totally clear WHY Dublin is visited by musicians, historians and exhibitions from St. Petersburg, but nevertheless the events are very interesting and if you want to attend any of them, apply for tickets as soon as possible – they are very limited!

TRIBUTE TO BRIAN O’DRISCOLL
The Dubliner Magazine, in association with Grey Goose, is inviting some lucky ticket winners to an event at 19:00 on the 18 June in the Residence Private Member Club at St. Stephen’s Green. You can apply for a free pair of tickets to “A tribute to Brian O’Driscoll”. The Dubliner magazine will present Brian O’Driscoll (Irish Rugby player, if you have never heard the name!) with a special award for sporting achievement on behalf of all Dubliners. NAKED ART – INVITATION
Hmm, can you imagine how the e-mail spam filters react to this announcement:
Contemporary artist Spencer Tunick will be offering the chance of a lifetime to become part of his first back to back city art project in both Cork and Dublin this June. Multiple groups of nude participants will be photographed outdoors by Tunick as part of his series of installations that have previously taken place in cities around the world including New York, Amsterdam and Mexico City. If you want to take part in this art installation you must register at www.spencertunickireland.ie. The event in Dublin will take place in the Docklands on Saturday 21 June. Everyone who participates will be given a free limited edition print of the installation in exchange for participating. Spencer Tunick is recognised worldwide and has done similar installations in many cities including Montreal, Melbourne, Lyon, London, Newcastle-Gateshead, Santiago, New York, Mexico City and Barcelona. In all cases the participants who make this piece of art are volunteers (between 100 – 18,000).
By the way, if you are not a participant, you will not be allowed to enter the installation area. So just watching the clothes-less bodies is not an option.
