Hi all!
Lots of events again this week. In addition to some suburb festivals, we have one massive contributor and that is the Culture Night next Friday. It is a brilliant event and I am already looking forward to it. A whole evening of music, art, tours, talks, and all sorts of other culture. There are sooo many events that I didn’t even start to take a stab at it. I have included some because I just came across them, but they are not strategically selected. You really have to spend a bit of time and check out the website OR download the free Culture Night app for iPhone and Android.
Oh, do you remember? A few months back I told you about a number of BIG news that will come out this year regarding the Dublin Event Guide? The first one was the total transformation of the layout (I think facelift is MUCH to weak a word!) and many of you have told me how that makes the Dublin Event Guide so much easier to read and us. … There is more to come and a team of people are helping me with that. It will probably be early October when I can finally talk about it, but SOME of you might hear from me before that. Everybody who has donated money to help covering the cost for the Dublin Event Guide will soon hear from me with a bit of a preview. If you always wanted to help with a donation but never got around to it, maybe NOW is the time. You will then get the preview if the upcoming news as well! ;-) I hear you wondering if that is just me trying to get you to donate? And I can say that this is indeed the case! Last week nobody helped with a donation, so it is now my job to make it soooo attractive for you to donate that you just can’t stay behind. ;-) Help yourself and the whole Dublin Event Guide Community and go to this page: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
Thanks for your help with donations and by spreading the word. If you can help with a donation, go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm You can subscribe for EUR 12 per year or just give any amount.
If you can’t help, you will definitely still get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I need you then to help spreading the word! Tell your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and suggest to them that they subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide People can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. Have you done it? Click on LIKE at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
With a big crash we burst through the temporary glass ceiling of 10,000 LIKES last week and more than 150 more people have joined us on the Facebook Page in just one week! Great stuff! I apprecaite your help in letting people know about it. Keep it up and let’s grow the Dublin Event Guide Community bigger and bigger. Join us if you haven’t yet: Go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
I struggled a little this week, finding something good and then I came across it by coincidence! The quote is about our confidence and I suggest you read it a few times and think about it for a moment.
“The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” – Steve Furtnick
Do you sometimes feel bad when you compare yourself to others? Don’t be fooled by what things “seem” to be…you only see the good stuff in others and tend to see the bad stuff in yourself. Focus on your highlight reel, how do you fare now? Be proud on what you have achieved!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Ooops! Last week nobody helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. I know some of you get tired by me asking every week for doantiona, but guys, these small donations keep the Event Guide alive! Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and help!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
BTW: If you see advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide and think that should pay loads, then I need to explain that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So use the ad links EVERY time you want to purchase something.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This week I have the following events on my list
+ Dragon Boat Regatta on Sat or Sun
+ Science Galelry on Sat or Sun
+ Oktoberfest on Sunday afternoon
+ the Saxophone Ensemble on Sun afternoon in Dublin Castle
+ Gardiner Street Gospel Choir on Sunday evening
I think that will keep me busy! :-)
Next week you should go to the Stree Control Semina on Monday if that is a problem you are dealing with. Courses like that are normally quite expensive in Malahide you get it for free.
On Tuesday I am interested in the Science Gallery lecture about the Performativity of Matter and the Alchemis Cafe about the Future of Antarctica also sounds tempting. After that I will get ready for Friday so that I can properly enjoy the Culture Night! I am really looking forward to it! :-)

Idiotic Safefood Campaign – Change your Dishcloth every 2 days
This must be the most idiotic advertising campaign of the decade. You see it on billboards in Dublin, where Safefood tells you that you should change your dishcloth every 2 days. They can’t be serious! Sure, you should keep your kitchen clean, but a new (or newly boiled) dishcloth/sponge every 2 days? Mad!
I found it on broadsheet.ie (www.broadsheet.ie/2012/09/13/health-and-safety-tips-for-idiots/) and if you are looking for some entertainment you should read the article and the hilarious comments some people left.
It is really shocking that this organisation gets a budget of EUR 8.5mio for nonsense like that! I have never seen a campaign from Safefood that made sense and you might remember them from another stupid campaign that said that if you are female and you have a waist of more then 32 inches (37 inches or men), you are fat. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=YarpWrLn9Zo) We need to save money? Close down Safefood! [By the way: Safefood.eu is not related to the Food Safety Authority, they are two separate organisations and their areas TOTALLY overlap! ANother reason why we don’t need Safefood!)

ZWEI Oktoberfeste in diesem Jahr (meaning: TWO Oktoberfests this year)
This year Dublin will experience not just one, but two Oktoberfests. The first one is the new Paulaner Oktoberfest and will take place from 13-16 Sept in the Round Room next to the Mansion House in Dawson Street and the second one is the by now well established Erdinger Oktoberfest at George’s Dock next to the chq Building in the IFSC. The Erdinger Oktoberfest was planned for the period from 27 Sept – 07 Oct and now has been extended by a whole week and will run from 20 Sept-07 Oct.
In my opinion, both venues are entirely unsuitable for a festival of this type, but I guess they are the best we have in the centre of Dublin and the – as far as size and access is concerned – more suitable RDS or Smithfield Plaza are too far or too problematic.
The Dublin Oktoberfest at George’s Dock is an extremely popular event and attracts LOADS of people every year. The small number of people that are allowed on the platform in George’s Dock means that there are huge queues every year and that creates a good bit of frustration. The Round Room is also much too small with a capacity of only somewhere around 500 people. So be prepared that you have to queue for a long while at both events or you might not even get in. If you definitely want to go either come extra early or – if you are a large group – consider booking a table (not cheap, but beer and food is included in the price). Admission is free to the events.
The Paulaner Oktoberfest in the Roundroom this weekend will open Fri and Sat from 17:00-00:00 and on Sunday from 15:00-22:00. (www.oktoberfestdublin.com/ or www.facebook.com/PaulanerIreland)
The Erdinger Oktoberfest will open on 20 Sept for the first time and opening hours are Mon-Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun: 12:00-20:00. (www.oktoberfest-dublin.de/)
At both Oktoberfests, there will be LOTS of Bavarian beer, Bavarian food and Bavarian live music. I am definitely looking forward to the culinary delights. :-) For both Oktoberfests you can pre-book tables if you come with a group of people and in the price food and beer is included. For everybody else admission is free, but due to the unsuitable locations be prepared to find long queues if you come at the “wrong” time.

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Cannonball Ireland
07:00 – 10:00, Fri 14 Sep
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
Cannonball Run was the title of a comedy movie with Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore. It was an illegal race across the USA with lots of cars and trucks. Since then Cannonball Runs have appeared in a number of countries and Ireland has its own Cannonball Run as well. The Irish version will take place from Fri 14 – Sun 16 Sept will run over 1000 km and about 150 cars and 400 participants will be part of the run. It is not a race, but a gentle drive. Participants pay quite a lot of money and some of the money will go to the charity “Children’s Sunshine Home” in Dublin who are caring for chronically ill children and their families.
But if you would love to see 150 nice cars and some of them will be supercars, then you have to be at Merrion Square between 07:00 and 10:00 as the Irish Cannonball Run will take off at 10:00. www.facebook.com/cannonball.ie

Paulaner Oktoberfest
17:00 – 00:00, Fri 14 Sep
Round Room, Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2
This year Dublin will experience not just one, but two “German” Oktoberfests. Some seem to think that the Oktoberfest moved from the George’s Dock to the Round Room, but that is incorrect. Instead, the Paulaner Oktoberfest will take place from 13-16 Sept in the Round Room and then from 27 Sept – 07 Oct the Erdinger Oktoberfest will take place in George’s Dock as in previous years. Admission is free, but expect long queues due to the popularity of German beer (and food). I am SURE it is not the music that atracts the crowds.
Opening times are on Fri and Sat from 17:00-00:00 and on Sunday from 15:00-22:00.

Autumn Sounds “Duo Chagall”
20:00, Fri 14 Sep
Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
A classical music evening with the “Duo Chagall” entitled “Autumn Sounds” will take place in Farmleigh House. The event is free, but ticketed and to request tickets you need to send a mail to farmleighinfo@opw.ie with the subject “Autumn Sounds 14th Sept”. Surprisingly the Farmleigh House website has no statement on it that says that the event is “sold out”, but I doubt that there are still tickets available.
The same concert will also take place on Fri 28 Sept, if you want tickets for that event instead, send a mail to the same address but with the subject “Autumn Sounds – Friday 28 Sept”. It is not clear if there will be a lottery or a first come first served system for the tickets.

Dragon Boat Regatta
10:00 – 17:30, Sat 15 Sep
Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2
The great Dragon Boat Regatta is taking place again this weekend. From 10:00 until 17:30 (Sat + Sun) there will be a race every 20 minutes in Grand Canal Dock at Grand Canal Square. Each team will compete in a number of races over a race distance of 200m and if I remember it right from last year, the teams consist of 16 rowers (+3 “on the bench”) and a drummer. Teams will come to Dublin from all over the world and there will be international races for the serious teams and charity races for the hobbyists. The Irish Dragon Boat Association is organising the event, but is not toooo forthcoming with details www.facebook.com/pages/Irish-Dragon-Boat-Association/119795088073528 so I am not sure if there is any entertainment etc taking place on Grand Canal Square. But either way, have a look at the races, they are interesting to watch!

Half Marathon
10:00, Sat 15 Sep
Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Dublin Marathon on the October Bank Holiday is only one single race, but there are in recent years four preparational races before the big day in October. This weekend the fourth one, a Half-Marathon (21km) will take place in Phoenix Park. The start is on Chesterfield Avenue, a little up from the roundabout at the entrance to Aras an Uachtarain and the finish is on Furze Road. A map is here dublinmarathon.ie/map12_halfmara.pdf The race is for serious runners :-), so there is no entertainment at the start or the finish as far as I could find out. But you could nevertheless cheer on the runners if you want.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 15 Sep
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Magical Materials – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Sep
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
A new Science Gallery Exhibition will open on Saturday and it will be great! I had a chance to see a very small preview and there are some amazing things to see. The exhibition is the first exhibition in the Science Gallery in cooperation with their direct neighbours in Trinity College, the nanoscience institute CRANN. Magical Materials is a month long show (only a month!!) which explores the peculiar properties of the world’s most futuristic and spectacular materials.
You will be able to see or touch nearly fifty Magical Materials including Aerogel (the lightest solid in the world), Graphene (a layer of graphite just one atom thick but 200 times stronger than steel) and Smart Textiles that store information and raise oxygen levels in blood.
As always, the Science Gallery exhibition is a MUST GO event and because you only have one month this time, you shouldn’t delay it. I plan to go this weekend! (The exhibition is well suitable for (school-going age) children as well.)
Oh and because the materials are all super materials with super powers, there is a nice an cool link with specifically designed comic book super heros. Great idea!

Paulaner Oktoberfest
17:00 – 00:00, Sat 15 Sep

Dragon Boat Regatta
10:00 – 17:30, Sun 16 Sep
Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 16 Sep
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Great Pink Run – Run and Entertainment
14:00, Sun 16 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
The Great Pink Run is a 10km Challenge or a 5km Fun Run in the Docklands for the charity “Breast Cancer Ireland”. And in addition to the run, there will be amusement and entertainment at the Point Village.
The race will start at the Point Village, will then go along North Wall Quay and Custom House Quay before crossing over Memorial Bridge down City Quay and Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. From there participants will follow Cardiff Lane, Hanover Quay and up Benson St and back onto Sir John Rogerson’s Quay before crossing over Samuel Beckett Bridge and finishing up on North Wall Quay.
1200 participants took part last year and raised EUR 90,000, but with this year’s new 10km option (2 laps instead of one!) it is expected that more people will be interested. Participants MUST wear at least one pink item of clothing, but it seems that they all get a pink T-Shirt anyway. Participation in the race is not free, but supporting the runners or enjoying the activities at the Point Village is free. There will be market stalls, street performers, face painting and more.

Paulaner Oktoberfest
15:00 – 22:00, Sun 16 Sep

Bilingualism and Cultural Identity (in Italian)
17:00, Mon 17 Sep
Italian Institute of Culture, 11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2
“To raise a bilingual child entails a great effort that stretches over a number of years. How does a child acquire language? Does bilingualism differ if we learn a second language from birth or from later on? Which is the best way to transmit two languages without creating imbalances? What are the effects of bilingualism on children’s intellectual development? How to help an adolescent to take advantage of double linguistic and cultural references? What does it mean to shape one’s identity from two languages and two cultures? Finally, how can the parents keep the skills of the minority language alive for their children? These are the questions and the themes we will consider and which we will attempt to answer during these two meetings.”
Dr. Sergio Spinelli, Psychologist and Jungian Psychotherapist, will talk about this on 17 and 24 Sept. Admission is free.

Celebration of Irish Graphic Novelists
18:00 – 20:00, Tue 18 Sep
Forbidden Planet, 6 Crampton Quay, Dublin 1
The launch of Gerry Hunt’s new graphic novel “At War with the Empire” will take place in Forbidden Planet. Guest speaker on the night will be comic book artist Will Sliney who will also be showcasing work from his forthcoming book “Celtic Warrior: The Legend of Cú Chulainn”. In addition to that get a sneak-peek at all the upcoming graphic novels from O’Brien Press.
Somebody recently said that “graphic novels” are nothing else than comic books, but since the topics are very much different to the usual comic books, I think a differntiation makes sense.
If you want to go to that event, contact Clare Kelly from O’Brien Press on 01 492 3333 or clarekelly@obrien.ie and tell her that you found out about the event in the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)

“Professor Brian Fagan takes us on a journey through the history of the complex relationship between humans and water over the past 10,000 years. He describes the central role of gravity in ancient water management, also stresses the importance of ritual in human attitudes toward water. When did humans first consider water an entitlement? What was the role of the Industrial Revolution in changing our attitudes toward the most fundamental of all commodities for human life? And does the history of water hold lessons for the present and future challenge of global water supplies?”
Admission is free, but booking is essential and if you wait too long all tickets will be gone! Royal Irish Academy talks are VERY popular.

What does the future (or perhaps futures) hold for Antarctica? Can we be confident that science and international co-operation will continue to prevail under the terms of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty? Or do we need to face up to some pressing issues regarding unresolved territorial claims, resource potential and exploitation, ongoing environmental change, and growing anxieties about Asian countries such as China and India which may well unsettle hopes for a peaceful future for Antarctica.

Open House – Programme Publication
09:00, Thu 20 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
Open House 2012 will take place in Dublin on 05+06+07 October. Over one weekend, nearly 100 buildings of all types will open their doors to allow you to explore the architecture of Dublin. It is a really great event and I will write more about it in two weeks time. But today I want to tell you that the full programme will be available free with the Irish Times on Thursday 20 Sept. So if you want it in printed form, don’t miss that date. Does that mean that the outstanding booklet that was available in previous years will not be available anymore? Or is it the booklet that will be distributed with the Irish Times? I am not sure, but we will find out.
If you miss the programme publication, you will be able to get it on the Open House website at www.openhousedublin.com/ but will have to print it yourself.
All Open House events in October are free, but some require pre-booking and pre-booking will be possible from 24 Sept. Keep that date in mind as well!

Erdinger Oktoberfest
12:00 – 00:30, Thu 20 Sep
George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
The Erdinger Oktoberfest is starting earlier than planned, it seems. Initially planned to start on 27 Sept, it now already kicks off on Thurs 20 Sept and will continue until 07 Oct. The beer tent and the FULL selection of food is only available on George’s Dock, but the “passenger” number permitted on the platform in George’s Dock are soo stringent, that every year a long queue formed from around 18:00 (sometimes even earlier). Luckily there is some food and beer also available in the area next to the chq Building, but you won’t have music there and some foods are not available there either.
The Oktoberfest has been extremely popular in previous years and I don’t expect that to change, so expect big crowds…and enjoy the beer and food. After 22:00 a very odd wristband system is in place. Allegedly due to Irish licensing laws you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 and you get a EUR 5 voucher for “a substantial meal” with it. (EUR 1 goes to a charity). The odd part is that this system only seems to apply to people who are on the George’s Dock platform and also it seems that only the person buying alcoholic drinks got checked for it in previous years. Make of this what you will. ;-)

PARK(ing) Day
12:00 – 20:00, Fri 21 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
Park(ing) Day is a yearly worldwide event, that reclaims parking space for the use of the people living in the City. For that one day citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. Last year was the first year of Dublin’s participation and 15 Parking Spaces were turned into mini parks and lots of other things.
A whole range of organisations, including GoCar, See Change – the National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership, the Irish Green Building Council, the Improvised Music Company, DIT Environment & Planning, the Dublin Cycling Campaign and many others will be on the streets turning car parks into public parks. It looks as if there will be 27 participants which would definitely be a strong show from Dublin.
A map will soon be at www.dublinparkingday.org/ and a preview is already on www.facebook.com/groups/201267119929061 and if you want to follow the events on Twitter, use @ParkingDayDub
Look out for the spaces and enjoy the quirkiness of the idea.

Culture Night 2012
17:00 – 23:00, Fri 21 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
Culture Night is a brilliant night of free culture for all the family all over Dublin. For one night only the city’s museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists studios, cultural centres and more, will open their doors late for a night of free entertainment, discovery and adventure. Hundreds of talks, tours, performances and events will be organised for you and thousands will be out in the City to enjoy it and take it all in.
There are tooo many events to list them all here, but the great thing is that there is a good website that provides exactly that. Go to the Dublin section of the website at www.culturenight.ie/explore-the-night/ to find all events sorted by the part of the City you want to. There is also an iPhone and Android app available for free that will help you to find our way around all events throughout the night.
I will include a small selection of events in the Friday section if this Dublin Event Guide, to give you some ideas and recommendations, but I strongly recommend that you spend some time checking the schedule before Friday night and then pick a few things that you want to experience. The downloadable Culture Night programme is here www.culturenight.ie/wp-content/uploads/culture-web.pdf
I won’t link to the different destinations I can recommend, but I am sure you will find them. What I either enjoyed in previous years or would like to go to this year or in the future are:
Kilmainham Gaol (very long queues), Trinity Library/Book of Kells (very long queues), Leinster House, Freemason’s Hall (expect queues), Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublinia (very long queues), St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
The places with long queues need you to be there early. There are plenty of other places that are also interesting, but since some are not open during the year OR cost money normally, they are particularly popular.

Culture Night: Post-it Wars
19:00 – 21:00, Fri 21 Sep
Alliance Francaise, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2
Following the success of last year’s mural painting, the Alliance Francaise are organising another live art event: a Post-it mosaic.
The guerre des post-its (office workers are fighting an art battle from their windows using multi-coloured post-it notes) became a huge phenomenon in France last year. The biggest effort extended over three floors and used more than 3,000 Post-it notes to create a design so complex it had to be worked out on a computer!
Come and take up the challenge using your imagination and your skills by creating something bigger, wackier and more adventurous….. Open to all age groups and admission is free.

World Peace Weekend Festival – Dublin Events
21-23 September
Mansion House / Westin Hotel / City Centre
The World Peace Weekend Festival in Dublin will take place around the International Day of Peace, from Fri 21 – Sun 23 Sept. “Instruments of Peace” is the charity foundation that will organise and run the events in Dublin. In 2010, they had a very successful event at The Helix, the “Four Seasons of Peace” Concert and last year they had two impactful events at The Convention Centre Dublin reaching 2,000 people.
This year they are celebrating a “World Peace Weekend Festival” which starts with the observance of the U.N. One Minute of Silence at 12:00 on Fri 21 Sept. Ireland’s observance will be televised live by the U.N. through the UN PEACE DAY LIVE.TV.
+ The Opening Ceremony (11:30-12:30) in Dublin at Trinity College will be “A Minute of Silence, A Moment of Peace” and students and everybody else is invited to participate in a World Record attempt of 1,000 people to hold hands for One Minute of Silence. (Guinness Book of Records will adjudicate this event. Currently the record holder is Hiroshima in Japan, with 600 people holding hands for one minute in silence for Peace in May 2012.)
+ On Saturday 22 Sept, a Peace Conference will take place in the Mansion House from 11:00-15:30
+ On Sunday 23 Sept, the Closing Ceremony will take place in the Westin Hotel (16:00-18:00) and is entitled “Women of Spirit, Women of Peace”.
All information is available at www.peacebeginswithme.eu and if you are interested in some or all events, you should register for these free events here www.amiando.com/worldpeacefestivalireland.html

Public Petition System Now Available – But it won’t make a difference!
You are already bored by the headline? Darn! And I thought it is exciting stuff. Well, to be honest, it could be! A “Public Petition System” means that you and I can submit issues to the Parliament (Dail) or Upper House (Seanad) (Together they are called Oireachtas.) that concern us and that otherwise might not get the attention of the Oireachtas. Well, so far so good!
A little while ago, it concerned tens of thousands of people that a junior minister in the current government had planned to sign a very undemocratic law that could lead to serious censorship in the Internet. The people who were concerned, could have used the Public Petition System to get the Oireachtas to talk about it, something the misguided Junior Minister (Sean Sherlock) initially refused to do and later half-heartedly agreed to, but it never changed anything. (stopsopaireland.com/) [By the way: More than 80,000 signatures were ignored in the end.]
So, could this new Petition System that is hailed as “…an important innovation in parliamentary democracy” by Sinn Fein TD Peadar Toibin, have changed something if it had been available in February? Unfortunately it is very doubtful, because the process is complicated, long winded and it is very very unlikely that your issue will ever make it through all the “filters”.
You can put your concern/problem about matters of public policy directly to an Oireachtas committee. Then the “Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions” will assess the submission and examine the issues raised. If your petition is admissible (Big IF!), the committee can refer the petition to another Oireachtas committee, to the Ombudsman or a relevant public body or organisation dealing with that area. You might get invited to give evidence during the process. And at the end of its consideration, the committee MAY produce a report making recommendations to the Government or relevant public body and this report MAY be debated in the Dáil or Seanad. – Slim chance that it will ever be discussed in the Dail! And we all know that even IF it happens, a discussion will lead to not much anyway.
Oh, and just to make it even harder: “Petitioners should demonstrate that they have already taken steps to resolve the issue raised in their petition, for example, through raising it with the Ombudsman, public bodies, or directly with the relevant Government Department.”
So they (Department, or public body) already said NO to you when you tried the first time, then you submit a petition and IF it makes it through all the filters, how likely is it that the outcome will be different the second time that the same department/public body etc deals with it? petitions.oireachtas.ie/ and www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0913/breaking45.html

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
