Hi all!

This weekend is Electric Picnic weekend and it seems that Event Organisers are totally afraid of that festival. I don’t know why, because there are not THAT many people going. I don’t know how many will be there, but let’s assume it is around 35,000 from all over Ireland. Is that really enough of a reason to squeze all events in the two weekends before? Well, it doesn’t really matter. If you are at the Electric Picnic, I hope you have a great time and if you are not there, then just check out the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and you will find enough to fill your day! :-)
[ad]

Last week it was sailor hats that transformed the “landscape” in Dublin and I expect that it will be US flags this week. Wonder what it will be next week!? :-)

Thanks for the donations last week, but it is a little bit like with our salaries. As soon as the new salary arrives, the bills start coming in (sometimes even the other wy around). So for September I am looking for EUR 170 again. Thanks for your help! If you can help with a donation, go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm You can subscribe for EUR 12 per year or just give any amount as a donation.

If you can’t help, you will still get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I need you then to help spreading the word! Tell your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and suggest to them that they subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide People can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. Have you done it? Click on LIKE at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide

We are more than 9800 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Only less than 200 more until we reach 10,000! Can we do that in 2 weeks? I think we can!! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

This week it is a audio recording with Anthony Robbins. He talks about one of the key points of changing your life: Taking Action!! I mentioned last week that I was in Rimini at an Anthony Robbins seminar and it was a super experience. I am not fully decided yet if I will go to the National Achievers Conference (NAC) in London where we will talk very soon. If you like what he has to say, consider going to the NAC! www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxS731BtTsQ

Donald Trump will be at that event as well this year and if you are interested you can book tickets here: www.amiando.com/e/vkogap There is a special offer available at the moment for just GBP 77 for the whole three days of National Achievers Conference. You will never get a chance to see and hear Anthony Robbins for less!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Lotte Ch, Rosemary K, Patrick O’C, Claire D, Eamonn U, Gerard Ph, Fiona F, Yvonne O’S were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Thanks!! Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).

BTW: If you see advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide and think that should pay loads, then I need to explain that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So use the ad links EVERY time you want to purchase something.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

Last weekend was perfect. Great weather and lots of good events and I loved it. This weekend is significantly quieter, but nevertheless there are a good few things to do and also it gives you a chance to go back to the old reliables like the markets in Temple Bar on Saturday and Dun Laoghair eon Saturday and Sunday and to remember parks and museums.

But you don’t HAVE to! Instead you could go to the 5000 people mass in Dublin Castle tomorrow morning and afterwards enjoy the Tailgate party in Temple Bar. In the afternoon you can either watch the American Football game (I hope some pubs will be able to show it.) But be prepared for a duration of around 3.5 hours! Or you could go to Phibsborough for the Phizzfest. The current Science Gallery exhibition will close next Friday, so this is your last chance this weekend. And the Merrion Square 250th anniversary comes with a numer of events this weekend and during the week that also can keep you busy.

I might go to Temple Bar tomorrow, then to the Science Gallery and in the evening, if I manage , to the Mint Bar for the Ratzingers gig. On Sunday, Merion Square is on my list, the last chance to see the sand sculptured (if they weren’t destroyed by the 5000 people at the mass on Sunday) and maybe the Phizzfest. Druing the week I will be busy, but will not miss the City Vineyard, it sounds good!

Who needs the Electric Picnic to be kept busy! ;-)

Emerald Isle Classic: Notre Dame vs Navy

The two College Teams Notre Dame and US Naval Academy (“Navy”) will open the College Football Season with the first game this week. It is unusual that the game takes place abroad and this seemingly caused some challenges (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0828/1224323097374.html) but with an estimated visitor number of to 35,000, the event will be a nice little earner for hotels, pubs and restaurants in Dublin. I dare to doubt the claim that it will bring EUR 100 mio to Ireland. but. hey, even if it was only 1 mio that otherwise wouldn’t have been left here, it is worth it.

Expect Dublin to be Americanised with flags and “welcomes” everywhere and expect the City Centre to be flooded by supporters and their families over the weekend.

If you have been anywhere near Dublin Port you probably saw the USS Fort McHenry which has arrived in Dublin for the Emerald Classic with 350 sailors and 400 Marines. Unfortunately you won’t be able to visit the ship if you don’t have a ticket. Tickets were given out through a lottery by the US Embassy. (But they didn’t tell me about it, so I couldn’t tell you! :-) ).

Own Website after 250 years – Merrion Square 250

With last week’s Merrion Square Open Day the anniversary events for the 250th birthday of Merrion Square were kicked off and Merrion Square also got its own website at www.merrionsquare.ieThroughout September a whole sequence of “Merrion Square 250” events will take place and because most of them will be free, I will include them in the Dublin Event Guide over the next four weeks. If you want to see the upcoming events yourself, youcan check them out on merrionsquare.ie/index.php/category/event-on/ or you can download the events programme here merrionsquare.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/MSQ_Sept2012_A4.pdf

Vodafone upsets Webtext customers

Vodafone provides their customers with 600 free “Webtext” text messages (national and international) every month and never stipulated any usage limitations. Clever programmers had written applications (e.g. Jelly SMS, Eirtext and Cabbage) that were able to make use of these free SMS when sending text messages from your phone. A very handy feature that I myself used quite a bit. However in a surprise move Vodafone has now introduced a further “security check”. After username and password users now have to enter another 4-letter code in the from of a captcha (a picture that shows four letters which you will have to type into a password field). This new hurdle has rendered all 3rd party applications that can make use of the 600 Webtexts completely useless and the Vodafone user community has no doubt that Vodafone only introduced it to stop the use of these applications. Many webtext users are seriously upset and the Vodafone user forums are spilling over with complaints. forum.vodafone.ie/index.php?/topic/12719-apps-using-web-text-disabled/

National Museum Events

The National Museum is doing a really great job in running lots of free events in their three Dublin branches for children and adults and I regularly list them here individually. Due to the large amount of other events, I won’t be able to list them one by one as there are even more events on in the museums for Heritage Week. For that reason, please check the museum events at www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx From next week I will do my best again to include National Museum events!

Pure Vintage Market discontinued

The Pure Vintage Market in the Dublin Food Co-op has been discontinued. It did take place on the first Sunday in the month for a while, but will not take place this weekend or in the following months. However, there are other Vintage free markets available that mightbe of interest to you: The Brocante Market, also in the Food Co-op on the 3rd Sunday of every month and the Ferocious Mingle Market in Thomas Street four days a week.

Dublin in 1965 – Let’s go for a drive!

An interesting film made on board of some buses driving through Dublin was linked to in the Irish Independent. It is from 1965, when the buses where still driving through Grafton Street! Have a look here: www.independent.ie/video/video-have-you-seen/take-a-drive-around-dublin-city-in-1965-3214633.html

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Emerald Isle Classic: Notre Dame

09:00 – 13:00, Sat 01 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

The Emerald Isle Classic, the American Football Game between Notre Dame (the Fighting Irish) and the Navy will be a a big part of this weekend. There won’t be too many events, but with up to 35,000 American visitors for the game and a sold out Aviva/Lansdowne Road Stadium with more than 50,000 people, you can imagine that you will see and hear a lot about it.

While we might think this is a happy get together planned as a show match, this is absolutely not the case, this Football Game is SERIOUS business for the two teams and they have hired separate PR agencies and run their own events.

The Notre Dame team has a Pep-Rally on Friday evening in the O2/Point Theatre, but this event is private/sold out and as a charity event wasn’t free anyway. However, there are two events on Saturday that might interest you.

The first event is at 09:00 a mass with more than 5000 people in the Upper Court Yard of Dublin Castle. Access to the mass is on a first come first served basis, but you can also watch it on RTE Player or on RTE on Sunday morning. After the match the Notre Dame band will march the short distance to Temple Bar where a “Tailgate” will take place.

A TailgateParty at an American Football match is a Party that takes place on a big parking lot with open boots/tailgates of trucks and cars where the supporters have BBQs and eat and drink before the match. We don’t have a big parking lot in the City Centre, and the thousands of visitors didn’t bring their trucks, so instead the pubs, bars and restaurants are the “trucks” and the food is not taking out of the own truck but bought in Temple Bar.

At 11:00 the Notre Dame band will perform on the Central Bank Plaza.

At 14:00 the game will kick off in the Aviva/Lansdowne Road stadium, so between 11:00 and 14:00 the masses will make their way to the stadium. After the game (possibly around 17:00) you can expect the City Centre getting flooded again with fans and supporters to continue their parties.

Phizzfest 2012

09:00, Sat 01 Sep

Phibsborough (various locations)

The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at www.phizzfest.ie/2012/guide/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village/suburb festivals in Dublin.

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Sep

Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

This is your last chance to see this exhibiiton:
Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therefore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists. www.irish-sand.com

Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Wiuff supplies Noma, rated the world’s best restaurant, with wild and cultivated ingredients. According to The Irish Times “Sheehy can spot chickweed and sorrel across a crowded field the way some people can spot designer labels.” Vincent will give a talk on the art of foraging at Powerscourt Garden Pavilion where you can learn how to: Grow your plant knowledge and learn how to identify plants, Understand what kind of sites offer interesting edible plants including grasslands, woodlands and seashores, Learn when is the best time to forage for wild plants, How to use and cook with wild plants at home Foraging for wild foods was once a way of life for generations long past. Phizzfest 2012

09:00, Sun 02 Sep

10:00 – 18:00, Sun 02 Sep

Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

This is your last chance to the Sand Sculptures:

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

LETS and Timebanks – Workshop

Occupy Dame Street and the Dublin Multicultural Fair and Market invite to their workshop on LETS and Timebanks and a presentation by Bev Cotton from the Clonakilty Favours Exchange. Bev will explain how the Timebank works and how to go about setting one up.

A Local Exchange Trading Scheme (LETS) is a community-based system where goods and services are exchanged, not as one-to-one barter, but using a pooled system of credits and debits. To support this, local currency is used which can only be spent within the group. A record of the transactions is kept by the group and the balances are published to members together with a listing of what is offered and what is wanted by the members. A Timebank is a somewhat similar arrangement except that a Timebank is restricted to services.

Phizzfest 2012

09:00, Mon 03 Sep

Experimental Geometry: Experiments with Candies, Dice and Colloids

19:00 – 20:00, Tue 04 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Come to the talk by Professor Paul Chaikin, New York University on “Experimental Geometry: Experiments with Candies, Dice and Colloids.” in teh Science Gallery.

Packing problems (how densely objects can fill a volume) are among the most ancient and persistent problems in mathematics and science. The oldest of these is the Kepler (1611) conjecture, which states that the most efficient way to pack spheres, leaving as few gaps as possible, happens to be the way that greengrocers stack oranges. More recently there has been intense interest in the packing of non-spherical shapes such as ellipsoids. By pouring M&M’s(c) Candies into a container, Professor Chaikin and his team have shown that randomly packed ellipsoids can pack more efficiently than spheres.

This talk is part of the International Workshop on Packing Problems that takes place in the School of Physics, Trinity College, from 02-05 September (www.packingproblems.com).

Admission is free, but booking is required on the website:

Dublin (various locations)

The Dublin Fashion Festival (06-09 Sept) is part of the programme of events organized by Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) and is there to highlight the fashion and style available in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars throughout Dublin city centre. The job o f the Dublin Business Improvement District is to help increasing the business for shops in Dublin, so it is in their interest ot get people to come tot the city and then to go into shops and buy there.

With that in mind, you will see that the Dublin Fashion Festival is not a festival in the typical sense with lots of festival events throughout the day and night in one or a few central locations. Instead it is a number of events that are just meant to give you an added reason to come to town. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect too much from the “Dublin Fashion Festival”.

A number of fashion related events will take place in shops and pubs/bars and there will be a few central fashion shows.

This series of explorations will take place across Dublin to capture 360º readings using everything from basic light sensors, and microphones, to infrared thermometers. Dublin Fashion Festival

09:00, Fri 07 Sep

The central and free events are:
+ Barnardos Vintage Pop-Up Store in the GPO Arcade (off Henry Street) from Thurs 06 – Sun 09 Sept (09:00-18:30)
+ Catwalk Shows at the Henry Street/Liffey Street junction on 06+08 Sept: 12:00 + 12:45, 07 Sept: 14:45 + 15:30

+ Creative Quarter Fashion Show: Fri 07 Sept: 20:00 On the steps of Powerscourt Townhouse (Host: Amanda Byran)
+ DFF by night: Fashion parades in city centre bars/pubs:

+ Children event on Sat 08 + Sun 09 (12:00-16:00) in South Anne Street with all details at www.dff.ie/festival-highlights/festival-highlights/

+ Clery’s: Thurs (16:00-17:00) + Fri (13:00-14:00): Debbie O’Donnell will be presenting 4 master-classes on the latest trends celebrity inspired looks and ling erie tips and tricks.

+ Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre: On Fri 07 Sept (13:00-15:00) and Sat 08 Sept (14:00-16:00) stylist Sonja Mohlich will be hosting a number of fashion workshops and she will also be available to give expert style advise and fashion tips to customers.

There will be more free events on the weekend 08+09 Sept. The main non-free event is the “Style of Dublin Charity Fashion Show” in No 37 Dawson Street on Sun 09 Sept at 19:00 and tickets are available on the website.

Phizzfest 2012

09:00, Fri 07 Sep

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Government will upgrade EVERY street to motorway

After reading that headline, I am sure you think I lost it, because no government could be so idotic to come up with the idea to turn every street into a motorway, right? Well, you are right, it is a stupid idea. But imagine if you wanted to run a haulage company and you lived on Valentia Island in Co. Kerry. You would probably expect that a motorway would be built to your front door. No? You would still think that is nonsensical? Hmmm, but then WHY would anyone pbuild high-bandwidth broadband links to the most remote places of Ireland. Isn’t that the same as building motorways to Valentia Island?

On Thursda, the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said the Government is committed to providing broadband speeds of at least 30 Megabit/s to every citizen in the State by 2015. And YOU will pay EUR 175mio for that! I am sure you agree that this plan is as nonsensical as upgrading all streets in Ireland to motorways! Ireland is basically a rural country where even in large population centres you have worse infrastructure than in many other European countries. And this “broadband for all” plan does not make sense in the slightest.

I could also mention that there is currently NO legal or lawful use for a bandwidth of 30 Megabit/s for the majority of users. Companies often have less than 30 Megabit/s but the remote farmer who lives on his own behind a hill somewhere and hardly ever uses the Internet, he now has to get 30 Megabit/s too! And you and I are paying! What a stupid idea!

It is a quieter weekend, but after the busy last two weeks, that is ok. It gives us a chance to catch our breath. The weather forecast is good, so no matter what the number of events is, make sure that you catch the last rays of sun, it is already getting significantly cooler!

Have an event-ful time,
