Hi all!

I hope you had a good bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the festivities around St. Patrick’s Day. I had a great time. On Saturday I went to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and to the band performances afterwards. The parade was great with good marching bands and colourful parade contributions. But year after year it is very disappointing, that most people can’t see the parade. Something should be done about that! The band performances afterwards were a great new idea. I saw the North Strand Kontra Band and Kila. Two outstanding performances. The Big Day Out on Sunday was better than in previous years but the Treasure Hunt, which I did the first time ever, wasn’t really what I had expected. I don’t know why, but I had expected at least a small challenge. Instead there were just 8 questions, which anybody could have answered. Because it is a family event this might make sense … for families! But maybe there should be a grown-ups version of the Treasure Hunt!?

With Easter just two weeks away, there won’t be any big events until then, but the weather allows for good outdoor events from now on, so let’s look forward to that.

After St. Patrick’s Festival last week, this week is naturally not one with any big event, but there are plenty of interesting small events that I can recommend.

It all starts on Friday evening with the Fire Juggling Show at Trinity College (part of the Dublin Circus Convention). Then on Saturday have a look at “Awaken Dublin”, a new event with a few interesting topics. And if you don’t want to sit inside, go to one of the many markets from Temple Bar Markets to Ferocious Mingle Market and a few inbetween, I hope you will find something.

On Sunday the Dublin Flea Market and the Knowledge Exchange interest me, but I will probably do a Tourism Day and do the Viking Splash Tour. Every now and then you have to be a tourist in your own town to re-discover it. ;-)

On Monday (and Tuesday) a very interesting event about an earthquake in Italy takes place in the Italian Cultural Institute. If you speak some Italian, check it out. Most of it is in English, so even if your Italian is not the greatest, it might be for you. The badly named “Monthly General Meeting” is not a boring office based event, but looks like an interesting comedy/music/entertainment event.

On Wednesday, you should have a look at the “Stopping the Spread of Superbugs” event in the Convention Centre. It is a unusual and untypical event, but if you have anything to do with hospitals or if you know people that work in, are patients in or visit sometimes hospitals, have a look at this. The Robert Boyle Lecture around the same time is looking at different aspect of medicine-related topics and for the musical people, the Campanile Consort concert could be the thing..

On Thursday the choir theme is continued with an open rehearsal for the Mornington Singers and in the morning there is an interesting talk in the Central Library about the Anglo Irish Bank’s involvement in the economic troubles.

The Dalkey School Project National School are running a Ceili Mor in Comhaltas,
Belgrave Square, Monkstown next Wed 28 March to raise funds for the school. Music on the evening will be provided by the Sean Norman Ceili Band. Doors open at 20:30 and tickets are EUR 12. A Ceilí Mor is a Big Irish Dance event, where you will get a chance to try out and learn the Irish Dance classics and hear great traditional Irish music. WEE ADVENTURE FILM FESTIVAL – TICKETS
The 5th Wee Adventure Film Festival will take place on Fri 30 March in Vicar Street. The festival is the home of short films with a sense of adventure and this year there will be 20 adventurous films. Get your tickets on www.ticketmaster.ie for EUR 15 (+ booking fee). Vote for your favourite film at the festival and be in with a chance to win great outdoor gear. The films will cover Climbing, Mountain Biking and Kitesurfing as well as newcomers Ocean rowing, paragliding and Free Running. AIB INTRODUCES BANK FEES
The AIB has announced that from 28 May, they will make it virtually impossible for people to get free banking. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0321/aib.html The AIB is owned by the government and consequently whatever they do is or can be influenced by the government as the owner of the bank. Well before the Celtic Tiger years, banking in the AIB was free. Then in the Celtic Tiger years banking charges were introduced but if you jumped through a burning hoop and threw some rats tails over your left shoulder (actually it was “make one transfer per quarter and pay with your bank card at least once”, a totally random criteria) you still could get free banking. The new rule says that you can get free banking only if you maintain a credit balance of at least EUR 2,500 for the whole quarter. This is essentially a termination of free banking. For the majority of AIB customers it means that there will be banking and transaction charges from 28 May and the only thing that can be recommended is that AIB customers should close their accounts with AIB and move to banks that don’t have any bank charges. Currently this seems to be only the Ulster Bank. COMPUTER GAMES RETAILER IN ADMINISTRATION
“Game” the UK computer games retailer, which has 14 stores in Ireland of which 8 are in Dublin has appointed an administrator. Game employs over 10,000 people at 1,270 stores in nine European countries and in Australia. LIBERTY HALL PLANS OBJECTED
Liberty Hall is one of the buildings in the City Centre that is loved and hated at the same time. At an Open House event a few years ago I learned what the original intentions were for the building and it was definitely not planned to build an eyesore and there are elements of the building (especially the mosaic) on the “wavey” roof at the top, that are really pretty. But the building is old and inefficient and SIPTU the trade union that owns the building would prefer to have a newer building. Plans to demolish Liberty Hall and to replace it with a 22-storey building on the historic site have now been appealed after Dublin City Council granted a planning permission. The new building would be 35% higher than the current Liberty Hall and it seems that one of two objections came from Irish Life, who have their building next to Liberty Hall. Part of the proposals for the site include a four-storey heritage centre at the top of the building, with a public skydeck accessible by a glass-fronted lift. This site shows an interesting picture of the new building and it looks HUGE! But if it will be built soon even if the objections are rejected depends very much on the economic situation of SIPTU. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0321/libertyhall.html

AMAZON – PHOTO EXHIBITION – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Only when I was on Meeting House Square last week and saw the posters, I found out about this exhibition. It sounds really interesting! It is an exhibition in Aid of Sky Rainforest Rescue with photographs by Sebastião Salgado and Per-Anders Pettersson. Sky, WWF and the Gallery of Photography present the Irish premiere of ‘AMAZON’, an exhibition in aid of Sky Rainforest Rescue, featuring the work of two award-winning photographers – Sebastião Salgado and Per-Anders Pettersson.
The exhibition, brings together two remarkable, distinct bodies of photography, highlighting the plight of the Amazonian rainforest and the people living within it and showcasing the efforts of Sky Rainforest Rescue, a three year partnership between Sky and WWF, that began in 2009 and aims to help save one billion trees in the state of Acre, north-west Brazil. www.galleryofphotography.ie/exhibitions/amazon.html

FIRE JUGGLING SHOW – DUBLIN CIRCUS CONVENTION 2012
Fri 23 March: 21:00 – Front Square, Trinity College
The Dublin Circus Convention 2012 will take place this weekend from Fri 23 – Sun 25 Mar and weekend passes cost EUR 15 for students and EUR 20 for adults. You can buy tickets in the Larkin Hall of the Larkin Community College in Champions Avenue, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1, which is the main venue for the Convention. The convention starts on Friday at 17:00 in the Larkin Hall.
The reason why I mention this event are two free events:
+ On Friday from 21:00 a Fire Show will take place on the Front Square of Trinity College. You will see Fire Poi, Fire Dancing, Fire Hoops and Fire Staff. Admission is free to this event.
+ The second free event is on Sat from 23:00 in the Woolshed Pub on Parnell Street. It is called “The Renegade” and is a “Open Mic Juggling Extravaganza”. Don’t ask me how “Open Mic” and “Juggling” are connected, though.

BALLYMUN SCHOOL ATTENDANCE INITIATIVE – EVENT

The Ballymun School Attendance Initiative is inviting to their event “Miss School – Miss Out 2012”. In just two years, the gap in whole school attendance between Ballymun and the national average has almost halved. Over 14,000 less days have been missed from school over the two years of the Initiative. Junior Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald is coming to Ballymun to hear results of an independent report commissioned by the Partnership which shows significant improvement in school attendance. She will speak on Mon 26 March at the Axis Theatre. The Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Andrew Montague who lives in Ballymun and is a director of the Partnership will give a video address at the event.

STOPPING THE SPREAD OF SUPERBUGS – THEATRE & TALK – CCD

It is a theatre performance that has been organised by the British Society for General Microbiology. The Convention Centre Dublin is a very prestigious (and expensive) and very big venue for it, so the goal is definitely to reach as many people as possible and since superbugs become more and more a problem, it is definitely a relevant topic.
“Stopping the Spread of Superbugs” is a fast-moving, hospital-based drama where you can get involved by questioning the experts. The play investigates how two cleaners deal both personally and professionally with the outbreak of a superbug. Dr Anthony Hilton will guide you through the scientific and ethical issues faced by infection control professionals and patients alike. The play is aimed at a general public audience (age 16+). CoderDojo is an Irish movement of free coding clubs for children and young people where learning to code is made into a “fun, sociable experience”. At CoderDojo, members, some as young as five and six, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. They meet like-minded people, show off what they have been working on, pass on what they know and generally learn that it is cool to be clever and to share. ST. PATRICK’S PARADE – LIES AND STATISTICS – ROUND 2
Irish journalism largely consists of re-printing press releases or even copying from each other and just re-printing what another newspaper already had said. Last week I wrote about the incorrect numbers about parade attendees that every year are spread. 500,000 is the claim, which is actually impossible because the streets of Dublin are not wide enough. This year, I checked myself and found a few interesting facts:
+ Even if you are tall, you can hardly see any pedestrian parade participants if you are further back than 7 people from the parade route boundary.
+ People at the front arrived at 08:00. That is 4 hours before the parade started!
+ While there are LOTS of people in O’Connell Street, the crowds are not more than 5 deep between Christ Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
+ On average there are significantly less than 30 people (15 on each side of the street) along the parade route. And only about a third of them can see the parade.
And the result? If you can fit a generous 2.5 people per metre and with a depth of 15 people on each side. The 2.7km parade route were lined by a max of 202,500 people and less than half of them (approx. 94500) actually SAW the parade! 500,000 is impressive, but the realistic 94,500 is not so much!! By the way, there were certainly another thousands of people searching for a suitable viewing position, but they never saw anything, so something should be done! Or is it maybe not a high priority to get people to SEE the parade? Maybe luring thousands into the City Centre and claiming that lots were there is more important?
