Hi all!

Culture Night!!! ;-) Yes, this Friday is Culture Night, one of the best free festivals of the whole year. I absolutely love Culture Night, but disastrously ;-) I will miss it this year. I usually plan holidays around the important cultural events, but this weekend I will be at another training course. This time it will be in Italy and shockingly the organisers did not consider Culture Night in Dublin in their planning. :-D But at least it will be nice and warm (27 degrees!).

[ad]

That training course is the reason why you get this week’s Dublin Event Guide soo early and it is a convenient coincidence that the early sending coincides with the week of Culture Night, so that you can find at least SOME suggestions here. To list everything would be just copying the very good Culture Night booklet and with 150 different events it is definitely too much anyway for this e-zine. But I will tell you what I would do if I was around and will mention a couple of interesting events. For the rest, check out: templebar.ie/Upload/EventTheme/file/40/Large_08172011034847284284.pdf or grab one of the brochures/booklets that you will find in many pubs and nearly all venues (pubs, cafes, restaurants, galleries etc) in Temple Bar.

Make the most of the six hours (17:00-23:00) of free culture in Dublin it is definitely worth it.

I am leaving Dublin from Thursday-Tuesday and – if all goes well – this newsletter will be sent to you on Thursday, so exceptionally I will start the event listings with the Thurday this week. Don’t get totally confused by the early sending and by the fact that the first day here is Thursday! ;-) Because I am under serious time pressure this week, this week’s e-zine MIGHT turn out to be a little slimmer, but despite the fact that I say that everytime I go on holidays, it was never the case that you had to do with an incomplete Event Guide. ;-)

Like every week, I am asking you to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide, your friends will thank you for it! :-) Print a few of these A4 pages out and hang them up at strategically good palaces? At work, or in your local community or gym or in the neighbourhood supermarket! www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf And keep telling your friends, colleagues, families about the Dublin Event Guide and help them to subscribe: The website is at www.dublineventguide.com where your friends can subscribe to the weekly newsletter in the sign-up form on the right. On the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide they only have to click on JOIN EMAIL LIST and while they are there, they should click on LIKE. These are the preferred methods, but if they are not convenient, then your friends can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG.

We now more than 6500 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and it would be really great if we could be as big on Facebook as we are on this distribution list. Click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is something I added to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. I mentioned that I will go to a seminar this weekend and if you are curious what type of seminar it is, have a look here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH89Eka_MCM Anthony Robbins is running that course and there will be approx. 5000 people at it! I have met Anthony before and I am really looking forward to the weekend. There will be some similarly inspiring and educational courses coming up in the near future in Dublin and in London and if you are interested, drop me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject ROBBINS and I will let you know when I hear about events closer to Dublin.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

This week I didn’t feel the appreciation from you. No donations. Send me a mail to let me know what I am doing wrong and the person that has the best suggestion for how to fix the problem of lack of donations will get a brilliant prize! Send your mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com

If you too want to join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? You can give much more than EUR 12 or you can give less, but EUR 12 is a big help for me and not too much for you. If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!
www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

OVERWHELMED AND UNABLE TO COPE?
Are you overwhelmed by the pace of life, feeling unable to cope with the changes and challenges thrown your way? Marie Walshe, MA, is a trained, experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist with rooms in Glasnevin and Rathgar. To make an appointment with Marie, please call 087 234 3514 or e-mail marie@agalma.ie. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so call now if you are an individual or couple who would like some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/marie-walshe

The big event this week will be Culture Night and I could compile the list of individual events I would go to, but my preferences are not necessarily yours. So all I recommend is that you do take part in the Culture Night. It is a great experience and a great buzz in and around Temple Bar.

Because I am under severe time pressure this week (plane leaves in a few hours), I will have to let you explore the events this week without my recommendations. I will do my best to bring Joerg’s Picks back again next week! ;-)

HELP THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE – BRAINSTORMING
I am looking for ideas how I could either increase the donations for the Dublin Event Guide or raise finances elsewhere to cover the expenses for the Dublin Event Guide. Send your ideas to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject IDEA before Thursday 29 Sept and the best idea will get a ticket to Richard Bandler’s great talk “The Technology of Success and Happiness”. I am very grateful for the donations I am getting, but lately there has been a significant drop and all ideas and suggestions will be appreciated.

FEILE DRAIOCHTA – FESTIVAL OF IRISH MAGIC & SPIRITUALITY
The Féile Draíochta, a Festival of Irish Magic & Spirituality is the annual festival of Irish earth based spirituality and takes place on Sat 01 October in the Camden Court Hotel, D2 from 09:00-17:30. Talks and workshops (mediation/ belly dance etc) will run all day from some of Ireland’s most knowledgeable speakers. It’s all to do with Irish heritage, fun, your body, mind and spirit! There will be stalls there on the day too. A full list of their schedule can be found at www.feiledraiochta.com/
Tickets are EUR 25 at the door for all day and the organisers have made one pair of tickets available for a competition. To win this pair of tickets, you will have to answer a question that is a little trickier than usual, but the right person to win the tickets will know the answer (…I am assured!). Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject DRAIOCHTA and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you need to answer this question: Who was the famous witch of Kilkenny? Your mail has to be with me by Tues 27 Sept at 18:00.

ALL-IRELAND CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL – RDS
This weekend, from 23-25 September, the 1st All-Ireland Craft Beerfest, a three-day celebration of Irish Craft Brews, will take place in the RDS, in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
The organisers Seamus O’Hara and Bruce Mansour are intending to create a world-class gathering of breweries each year, where you can sample, experience, learn and be entertained. The festival will feature over 40 beers and ciders along with select whiskey makers and there will be talented bands from all over the country entertaining you. The festival dates and times are: Fri 23 Sept from 16:00-00:30, Sat 24 Sept from 12:00-00:30 and Sun 25 Sept from 12:00-18:00. Tickets are EUR 10 per day or EUR 15 for a three day pass. All tickets include a free souvenir glass and a half-pint of beer or cider. Similar to some of the food tasting festivals, there will be an on-site currency, in this case called “Beer Bucks”, to pay for food and drink. Each Beer Buck is EUR 2.50 and will buy you 1/2 pint. Check out
www.irishcraftbeerfestival.com and tickets will be available at the door.
Bruce and Seamus mad five pairs of weekend passes available for readers of the Dublin Event Guide and LOTS of you entered the competition. I wasn’t able to get tickets for everyone, but the five lucky winners are Damian Power, Greta Keegan, Tim Connolly, Sarah McCarthy and Ian Fox. Congratulations!!

“Celtic Fete Fatale: See No Evil – Wear No Evil” is a masked ball on Sat 24 Sept in the Gibson Hotel, Point Village, D1 ( Behind the 02 and last stop on red Luas line to 02) from 19:30. Organised by the Fashion Business Network, it is an annual event where Dubliners, members of the fashion industry including fashion lovers, designers, stylists, makeup artists and photographers will be in attendance. The event, complemented by a glamorous atmosphere of wining, dining and entertainment, is a great occasion for high profile socialising and networking. A contemporary fashion show will present couture from Irish designers in a new dimension. The strict dress code for this event is “Wow and Masked!” Tickets are EUR 30 and can be purchased from ticketmaster.ie and also at the door. The event will be supporting the charity, Beyond Skin Foundation, an organisation that helps women from disadvantaged backgrounds to get high quality training in the beauty industry so that they can live finan cially independent lifes to break out of poverty and achieve self-reliance and dignity. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=176164762436761

FRINGE FESTIVAL CLOSING PERFORMANCE
It seems as if there are still free tickets available for the Macnas performance “On the Edge of Things is a Fierce Beauty”. This event was cancelled due to the bad weather forecast on the opening day of the Fringe Festival and will now take place on Sunday 25 Sept (19:30). Because all previously issued tickets have been declared invalid and new (free) tickets are being issued at the Fringe Festival ticket office, you are in luck. However you have to get the tickets (up to 5 per person) in person at Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar (Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00). The event is a multi-stage play, performed outdoors in Collins Barracks. Last year it was a super event, so I recommend it strongly!

FRINGE FESTIVAL MACNAS PERFORMANCE – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The event I described above still needs some people to help. If you can help with the performance or the organisation of the event on Sunday, check www.fringefest.com/news/volunteers-needed-to-help-remount-the-macnas-show

RICHARD BANDLER IN DUBLIN
I mentioned last week that Richard Bandler, the co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) will be in Dublin on 05 October and that I was organising a group-buy for people that are interested. The standard price is EUR 55 and last week I expected that we might get the tickets for EUR 30, but it came even better: I was able to negotiate a ticket price of EUR 20 and the best news is that you can still join the group if you are interested.
Richard Bandler is a fascinating trainer and therapist, he has a very colourful story, but he is without a doubt a brilliant speaker, book author and therapist. If you are interested then have a look at this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q03YJVpm2J8
Richard Bandler will be in Dublin on 05 October from 19:30-21:30 in the D4 Hotels in Ballsbridge to talk about his new book “The Secrets of Being Happy”. If you are seriously interested, send a mail to me at dublineventguide@gmail.com with BANDLER in the subject before Wed 28 Sept, tell me how many tickets you are interested in and I will get back to you. The event organisers’ information is here seminars.ie/inspirational-seminars/seminar_details.php?event_id=216 I am not involved with the organisation of the event, I only got a few people together to improve our negotiation position. ;-)

TEMPLE BAR MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
Do you remember the Temple Bar Meeting House Square? For months and months it had been turned into a big ugly hole in Temple Bar, which had an impact on quite a number of events. The plan was to install a removable roof over Meeting House square in the form of what looks like four big umbrellas. This would make events somewhat less dependent on the weather. Great idea, but when the holes were dug on Meeting House Square some archaeological discoveries meant that the completion date had to be pushed out by many months. Finally the big umbrellas (correct term: retractable canopies) will be installed from early morning on Saturday. Have a look if you walk by at the weekend.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Quite an array of exhibitions and galleries are part of Culture Night, check the Friday section for more information about Culture Night and find there the link to all events. Some exhibitions are mentioned in the Friday Section as well.

DUBLIN OKTOBERFEST – GEORGE’S DOCK
22 Sept – 09 Oct: George’s Dock. IFSC, Dublin 1
The hyper-popular Bavarian Oktoberfest is coming back to George’s Dock in Dublin. I love it because I can – once a year – have some very very typical German food that I would never have otherwise (and probably wouldn’t have either if I lived in Germany!). ;-) George’s Dock is a great location but it has a HUGE disadvantage, the Oktoberfest takes place on the platform IN George’s Dock and on the walk-way next to the CHQ building. The big tent / marquee with the music and the Oktoberfest atmosphere and the best food is on the platform, but due to the limited number of people that are allowed on the platform, last year a long long queue of people waiting to get on the platform already started forming at 17:00. …and it got longer and longer. No fun!
Another odd thing is that you have to buy a wristband after 22:00 to be allowed to purchase beer. The wristband is EUR 6 and you get EUR 5 in food for it and EUR 1 goes to a charity. Allegedly this is an alcohol license stipulation (you have to eat a “substantial meal” to be allowed to remain on site after 22:00), I wonder why this doesn’t apply to pubs.
If you ignore or rather accept these two issues, the Oktoberfest is lots of fun. The Stein Bier (1 litre) is EUR 10, which is not too outrageous and the food is usually on the upper end of the pricing scale, but still acceptable.
Opening times are Mon-Sat 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-20:00. More 30 German food stands are available for you and Erdinger beer is the beer provider. You can reserve tables, but you better check the details about that on the website www.oktoberfest-dublin.de/ Otherwise make sure that you come as early as possible or alternatively don’t event try to get onto the platform. Around George’s dock you can get beer and food as well, just not ALL types of food and no Bavarian music (not the biggest loss! ;-) ).

His top development priority at the moment is the Hasso Plattner Design-Thinking-Research Program and associated “Electronic Colloquium on Design Thinking Research,” a peer commentary journal.

ARTHUR’S DAY
Thurs 22 Sept: All over Dublin
The Guinness Promotion Day, called “Arthur’s Day” is totally unrelated to Arthur Guinness. Many think it is his birthday or the anniversary of his death, but that is not the case. Actually, Arthur’s Day is a moving day! It is always on a Thursday and its only purpose is to provide Guinness with more revenue. I am somewhat critical of the mystique around the day, but I have to give it to Guinness, from a marketing point of view it is an extremely smart event. Gigs take place in many pubs, but the gigs are in most cases not free even if they take place in pubs that normally don’t charge in. All a bit odd. There is nothing free about Arthur’s Day, but a frenzy will spread through Dublin where all Guinness drinkers think they need to get involved and most disturbingly, people even wish each other “Happy Arthur’s Day”. That is like saying “Happy McDonald’s Day” on 23 May (Why not THAT arbitrary day?) or “Happy Toyota Day” on 01 June (another arbitrary date).

DUBLIN OKTOBERFEST – GEORGE’S DOCK
(See Thursday for details.)

CULTURE NIGHT 2011
Fri 23 Sept: 17:00-23:00 – All over Dublin
This is one of the best events of the year, but unfortunately I will miss it this year. :-( So I hope you will do Culture night for me as well. ;-) Culture Night was invented by the great people in Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and now has spread all over Ireland. The concept is simple: One night per year (unfortunately only one) cultural venues will stay open late AND will invite people to visit them and to enjoy the culture for free. Most venues stay open until 23:00 and even the ones that normally charge an admission charge are nearly all free during Culture Night. The central hub is Temple Bar, but check the map (www.culturenight.ie/explore-the-night/) and you will see that Culture Night takes place all over Dublin. Museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artist’s studios and cultural centres are part of it and all included more than 150 organisations are opening their doors until late in Dublin.
Bring the whole family and all your friends! To make it easier to get around, Dublin Bus even provides a free service. Enjoy the many live performances, workshops, tours, talks, drama, dance and a whole range of other creative activities for free.
I could attempt to recommend some things to you, but it is really difficult to chose from the more 150 offers. My strategy often is that I go for venues that are either normally NOT free or that offer something special that night.
It definitely is advisable to pre-plan the night a bit if you want to make best use of it and you can do that either by picking up a printed brochure in a variety of venues in town or by checking the PDF programme here
templebar.ie/Upload/EventTheme/file/40/Large_08172011034847284284.pdf
www.culturenight.ie.

The following events are NOT a full list of events, but they represent a wide variety of events and will hopefully whet your appetite for having a look at the full Culture Night programme!

FUTURE PRESIDENTS – DISCUSSION – IFI
Fri 23 Sept: 11:00-12:45 – Cinema 1, Irish Film Institute, Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. – Temple Bar Cultural Trust and the National Campaign for the Arts (www.ncfa.ie) are bringing all Presidential candidates to Temple Bar on Friday from 11:00. Despite the fact that the Irish president has absolutely no influence over any day to day politics, the purpose of the event is to get the candidates to present their vision and ideas on the role of culture and the arts in the Presidency. What can we expect? They will all tell use how most important art and culture is and that they will do everything in their might to support culture and arts. And once one of them became the president, he/she will not be able to do anything. A bit of a nonsensical event in my opinion, but the candidates have nothing else to do yet. ;-) The event starts at 11:00 at the IFI and no tickets are needed. blog.templebar.ie/?p=3778 The event is being chaired by journalist Olivia O’Leary and I hope she will start the discussion by clarifying what exactly the Irish President can do with respect to arts and culture.

NANOSCIENCE LECTURE – RDS
Tues 27 Sept: 19:00 – RDS Concert Hall, RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
“Tales from the Nanoworld” is the title of this RDS / Intel Prize Lecture for Nanoscience. How many magnets does the average person own? According to Professor Michael Coey, several billion magnets per person would be a fair estimate. Far from the iconic image of a large, red, horseshoe-shaped magnet, in the world of nanoscience these magnets are so tiny that scientists could fit a million of them on the head of a pin. Magnets have transformed our everyday lives and have been key to the development of smaller, faster and lighter computers and mobile devices. It is thanks to the fast-developing world of magnetism that huge volumes of documents, images, music and data can be stored in computers.
Professor Michael Coey, recipient of the inaugural RDS / Intel Prize Lecture for Nanoscience, will present a public lecture to illustrate how the cutting-edge field of nanoscience has the potential to transform research and industry across all areas of science including electronics, medicine and engineering.
Admission is free, but advance booking is essential. Go to www.rds.ie/nanoscience

Against this background, the RDS is delighted to welcome Mr Gabriel D’Arcy, Managing Director, Bord na Móna, to the RDS to update about one of the proposals that has been suggested to help meet the long-term water supply needs of the Dublin Region. The proposal involves bringing water from the Shannon Basin to a reservoir in Garryhinch, west of Portarlington, from where it will be pumped eastwards. The water will supply up to nine counties in the east and midlands, including Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Wicklow. The idea is based on the premise that the Shannon Basin has too much water, while the eastern counties have too little.

SINGLES NIGHT – CLARION HOTEL IFSC
Fri 30 Sept: 20:00-00:30 – Kudos Bar, The Clarion Hotel, IFSC, Dublin 1
Two friends of mine have identified that 1-2-1 is very time-consuming, especially because it is a hit-and-miss effort where the “chat” can be VERY awkward if you know already in the first 5 seconds that there is no chemistry whatsoever and all you want is any excuse to leave early. To help that, this singles night will give you a chance to meet all the girls/guys you’ve been chatting to via Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and Dating Sites and want to meet in person. You can then quickly establish who you’d like to date, who you’d like as a friend and who you never, ever want to see again. There is no speed dating and no formal programme to this evening, the idea is rather to meet in a normal bar environment but with the difference that you and everyone is there for one reason…to meet others.
So invite your friends to it to make sure that there is a good mix of people. Admision is free and the organisers will do their best to make sure no girls or guys are left on their own. www.facebook.com/notes/paul-hurley/dublin-singles-night-friday-september-30th-entry-is-free/10150379761775097

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

DAVID NORRIS – FAILING BETTER?
The biggest ODD story this week has to be that David Norris has re-entered the competition to become the next Irish President. The reason why it is odd is because the same David Norris had decided on 02 August that he was not the right person to become the next Irish president when he withdrew from the process. And last Friday, six weeks after the withdrawal, he now seems to think that suddenly he is the right person again. Nothing has changed and if reasons in August were important enough to stop him from taking part in the process, then it certainly is odd that now all is allegedly different? There are serious doubts that he will get support from the required 20 parliament or Seanad members to ensure that his name will appear on the ballot papers: www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0921/1224304483539.html When Norris decided to withdraw he quoted Sammuel Beckett, who said “”Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better”. Maybe Norris just wants to try that ‘fail better” bit??

MORE FAILS – NEW PR AGENCY, PLEASE!
You know you have to fire your PR Agency if they even manage to put a spelling mistake in the headline of your Press Release: Poll Position? It should be “Pole Position”! www.irishpressreleases.ie/2011/09/20/donedeal-takes-poll-position-as-ireland%E2%80%99s-most-popular-audited-motoring-website/

Take care,

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
