Hi all!
Another weekend coming up and there are more free events waiting for you. I hope you will enjoy them and try out some new events as well. Stepping out of your comfort zone or leaving your habitual areas behind every now and then to try something new is educational and lots of fun. ;-)
[ad]
The next two months will get me to try out a number of new things. I will be at two seminars, really interesting seminars, but they will both challenge me as well and I am looking forward to it. Apart from that I have some plans regarding improvements for this Dublin Event Guide and I am not sure yet where that will lead. ;-) I am sure they will be good improvements, but where I normally rather rely on my own skills and experience, I am at a point where I need to expand my horizon. All a bit cryptic? I know! I don’t want to make any promises before I know that I will be able to deliver, so be patient with me. :-)
Every week I get lots and lots of mails, some are for upcoming events, some contain suggestions or ideas, some a supportive and encouraging and others are spam. Because the dublineventguide@gmail.com e-mail address is in every e-zine, on the website and in all your address books, I get lots of spam and if I counted the massive amounts of money all my Kenian friends wanted to send me I could sort out the debt problems of Ireland. Luckily the offers for little blue pills and suggestions for extensions of body parts are less frequent. ;-) Gmail is quite good in filtering most of the nonsense, but sometimes a good mail gets caught up in it. If you have sent me a mail and have not heard back, feel free to remind me! I always TRY to reply to all the mails, but am not always able to. If your mail needs only a very short reply, you have a better chance. And for the mails that need a longer reply: One of these days I will get a chance to work on the long list of these mails as well.
Bottom line: I read EVERY single mail. If you haven’t heard from me, poke me. I am however not able to confirm to every single event organiser if I will include their event or not. Just thought I should explain that. ;-)

This week’s “Feel Good Slot” video is a TED talk by Simon Sinek, I have the feeling that I might have used that before, but I couldn’t find it in my list. If I have used it, forgive me and watch it again, in case you forgot some details. If I never sent it, then look at it and think about how you can use that information to promote your ideas better. Especially listen to his two versions of an Apple Marketing message, the one that an IT/computer company would use and the one that sounds like Apple. Interesting! Strictly speaking this video clip might not make you feel better immediately, but I found it inspiring and very interesting. If you have customers, but as well if you have children or a partner, do you “sell” your ideas in the best possible way? www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Julia Sch. helped with a MUCH appreciated donation! Thanks a lot! Without you the Dublin Event Guide wouldn’t be!
To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. I would even take your bus refund tickets, or all your spare change in your pocket! I am not fuzzy. ;-) The simplest way is to go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm now and to help!
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine and then buy or order, for example, order books from bookdepository, a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend, I have difficulties AGAIN to decide where to go and when. Tonight the Classical Twist, a classical music concert in Dun Laoghaire sounds really interesting. But you could go as well on Saturday or Sunday, so there is some flexibility.
On Saturday, the Africa Day in Bray is competing with the Soundwave Festival in Dun Laoghaire (and with a course I might attend.) In the evening the highlights are the “Hoop Dreams” screening in the Exchange Dublin and the Attention Bebe gig/fundraiser in the Bernard Shaw.
On Sunday I expect that the Fireworks in Bray, which is the big final-day event at the Summer Fest, will win. In the afternoon the sing-along Classical Twist, could be fun.
Next Tuesday is another Milk&Cookies Stories events and I will definitely have to go at some stage. Maybe next week? But the absolute MUST GO event is the Romeo&Juliet (Unplugged) performance in Ranelagh Gardens! Make sure that you read about it in the Tuesday section and then GO to it!
Next Friday two interesting events will start that are already worth mentioning: The Festival des Bateaux in Dun Laoghaire and the Latin American Festival in Temple Bar.
Lots to do, let’s get going! :-)

PEOPLE’S FESTIVAL – DUN LAOGHAIRE
After the cancellation of the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures was announced at some stage towards the end of, a group of volunteers got together and decided that they wanted to run a festival for the people and they called it People’s Festival. The People’s Festival in Dun Laoghaire has now been announced officially for the weekend of 20+21 August. It is not a replacement of the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture, but a festival organised by lots of volunteers to fill some part of the huge gap the Festival of World Culture has left when it was cancelled. Put the date in your diary and check out their facebook event page: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=240261979330685
In all fairness, I have to say that Dun Laoghaire is making efforts to provide a number of (very small) festivals and events to give at least some festival like events back. This week the Soundwave Festival will take place on Saturday and next week the “Festival des Bateaux” and the Chalk Festival will take place (more about that next week).
DUBLIN LITERARY MUSIC TRAIL
The Contemporary Music Centre has installed a free Literary Music Trail along seven iconic locations in Dublin where you can (with your iPhone or Android phone) listen to music samples when you arrive there. A very interesting idea and if you have te right phone, you should try it! But hurry! On 31 August the Music Trail will be terminated. Check this brochure, it contains all the information: www.cmc.ie/musictrail/downloads/Dublin_New_Music_Trail_2011.pdf
MORE SURVEYS – THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE NEEDS YOU ;-)
MySurvey is a company that runs surveys for other companies, for example to find out what people think about the name of a product that will be launched soon, or about an advertisement campaign before it makes it on to the billboards or on the TV screen. So, you influence the approach companies take and to thank you, you will receive reward points which can be exchanged for interesting vouchers or you can donate your rewards to charity if you prefer that.
MySurvey regularly look for new and good panel members. A “good” panel member is someone who doesn’t just sign up, but who replies to questionnaires as well. And for helping them to reach new panel members they are prepared to give prices. I am always looking for ways for you to help the Dublin Event Guide without having to put your hand in your own pocket and here is a way: If more than 200 people sign up by following this link: clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998 and if these 200+ people fill in at least one questionnaire in the next 30 days, then the promoter (i.e. me) will have a chance to get an iPad. Not a lot of work for you and it would help me prepare the weekly newsletter in a much more efficient way. Can you help? 23 people did help already, but that is still far away from 200 that need to sign-up AND do at least ONE survey. Unless you ARE already a MySurvey Panel member, click on this link to help! clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998 Thanks! :-)

MySURVEY – Get rewarded for taking part in surveys that help companies to improve their products or the information they provide. You will get paid for your help and can get PayPal vouchers or donate the reward to a charity AND you make your opinion count! In addition MySURVEY will support the Dublin Event Guide financially if you register through this link:

SAND SCULPTURES IN DUBLIN CASTLE
Every summer for the last 9 years, a group of artists are building sand sculptures in the courtyard of Dublin Castle for everyone to see. They are amazing pieces of art and talent and I am fascinated every year. The artists started sculpting on 25 July and their work is on display now until 28 Aug. The theme this year is Compass and you can easily find them. Just walk towards the entrance of Dublin Castle and you will see them big and impressive in the courtyard. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001217556672&sk=wall
LIBRARY EVENTS
I have to mention the Dublin Libraries every now and then. The Libraries do an amazing job in running lots of free events. I try to include the events of the Libraries in Ilac Centre (Central Library) and in Pearse Street, but there are too many events to list them all, so make sure that you check these websites regularly for some additional events that might interest you:
www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/all_events.aspx

RENARDS – GONE AGAIN
In October 2010 Renards , the once famous and super-popular night-club in South Frederick Street, re-opened the doors after it was closed down by the previous owner Robbie Fox, some time before (May 2009). The new owner, Ken Drumm, intriguingly the brother of the former Chief Executive of the Anglo Irish Bank, renovated the place and re-opened. But, according to one of the Sunday newspapers, less than a year later, Renards is closed again and the suppliers have been left with an unpaid debt AGAIN. Interestingly an online search didn’t get me far. As if nobody realised that Renards is closed again. Must have been a successful second run from October to July!? Not!
CONVENTION CENTRE DUBLIN – NOT SOOO SUCCESSFUL!?
The Irish Times reported on Monday that the state has paid more than EUR 43m to the people behind the Convention Centre in Dublin since its opening. EUR 15.4m in 2010 and EUR 27.8m until now in 2011. With these figures and 40% of the year still ahead of us, it could come to another EUR 20.4m by the end of the year. Which then is a total of EUR 63.6m. That’s a lot! These 63.6m is a part of the EUR 715m that the state will pay the consortium in this “Private-Public Partnership” over 25 years before the centre goes into State ownership. Sure, a big project like the Convention Centre takes a while until it gets into full gear, but with a capacity of 8000 people, it is a little concerning that events in the CCD have an average of just 300 people. And in total it means that for every single visitor you and I have given EUR 512 as a subsidy.
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2011/0801/1224301686670.html
On 19 May the Convention Centre issued a Press Release saying “To date, over 76,000 guests have attended events hosted at The CCD. By the end of this year, the venue will have helped to boost the local economy by over €60m.” (www.theccd.ie/index.jsp?p=100&n=108&a=391). Well, that sounds quite good, but EUR 60m the local economy was boosted by? And we gave them EUR 63m by the end of the year? Looks like we could have saved EUR 3m by giving that money DIRECTLY to the local economy!
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
START UP LOOKING FOR MONEY? – CONTACT ME
I was at an event of the Dublin Investment Summit last week, where start-up companies could present their idea to get some feedback and possibly to be then invited to the “Dublin Investment Summit” in September to look for investment capital. If you are working on an idea and have a good idea what your business needs in money and what it will deliver, then contact me. It is not certain if there will be another of these events, but if there is some interest, I would expect that the guys at the DIS will run another one. You don’t need to tell me details about your idea/project, just let me know if you are prepared to tell a panel for a couple of minutes what your idea or start-up is about. Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with START-UP in the subject line. Please contact me as soon as possible! My role in this will be to connect you with the people who ran that event, but if you need some advise about what and how to present, I am more than happy to help. (I have some experience in that area.)

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
LUCIE PACOVSKA – BALLA BAN ART GALLERY

Lucie Pacovská’s solo Exhibition “Two Sides of Things” will take place. It is the first solo exhibition of this Czech artist and she will launch it officially on Thurs 04 Aug from 17:30-19:30. www.ballaban.net

As part of PLAY, The Ark’s summer music festival for families, there is a free foyer sound installations at The Ark. Come along and play with fascinating and quirky electronic sound installations by composer Jonathan Nangle. Create your own surround-sound music and lighting using iPod Touches, play a real drumkit without touching it, discover what a can of baked beans sounds like and meet some double pendulums. Children and grown-ups will be equally addicted!
Demo Sessions with Jonathan Nangle will take place on Sat 30 July and Sat 13 Aug at 11:00. Admission is free to these demo sessions, but you need to book on 01-6707788. www.ark.ie

BRAY SUMMER FEST 2011
08 July – 07 August: Bray Sea Front
This is the last weekend of the great Bray Summer Festival. From early July there was entertainment every Fri, Sat and Sun. A Family Day with Fireworks, the Bray Airshow and for the finale an Africa Day and a Charity Day will take place and all will then end with another fireworks. I was in Bray last weekend and might go again this weekend and for the 3rd or 4th year, I have to say that Bray has impressed me with their Summer Fest again. At a time when lots of other festivals bow out because they don’t have the skills to scale a festival depending on the resources available, Bray has put on a great festival again.
For the festival programme have a look at www.braysummerfest.com/events/ and www.braysummerfest.com/Bray-Summerfest-2011.pdf
The performing bands this weekend are:
+ Fri: The Flaws, Biploar Empire, Roy Seven
+ Sat: The Lace, Oleku Band, Afresh, Natty Wailer
+ Sun: Bray Gospel Choir, Novastone, Knights of Leoon
———-
On Saturday the Africa Day will take place in Bray:
There will be African Music and an African Market at the Seafront.
On Sunday the Charity Fest will be the final day of the Summer Fest. It is the day when collection buckets will be taken out to raise as much money for a number of chosen charities as possible. There will be a 10km Run as well, an Vintage Car Rally at 11:00 and at 22:30 a fireworks will be the spectacular end to a successful month of celebrations. www.braysummerfest.com/music/

HOOP DREAMS – FILM SCREENING – EXCHANGE DUBLIN
Sat 06 Aug: 19:00-22:00 – Exchange Dublin, Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. – The documentary “Hoop Dreams” (1994) will be screened on Saturday. Admission is free. – In the late 80s, a group of film makers went to an inner city basketball court in Chicago with the intention of making a half hour television programme about the kids playing the courts. Soon the camera crew realised that they had the potential of the makings of a documentary film by following the lives of two particular young basketball prodigies, William Gates and Arthur Agee. What resulted from that decision 6 years later, was 250 hours of film footage which was then edited down an almost 3 hour long documentary film which has won numerous awards and is widely considered one of the best documentary films ever made.
It is not just a story of two teenage boys battling against all the odds to reach their dreams, but a story about wider issues such as the sports industry, school system, family, race, and class. And there is no hand-of-Hollywood to manipulate the plot for maximum emotional impact. Instead it is a documentary about the gritty real life.

Influenced by bands and soloists from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac and The Arcade Fire to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel, Keith has a lot to live up to, but he is slowly making a name for himself among the Irish music scene. His songs are melodic, catchy, and honest, and he sings them with sincerity and emotion.” www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=157282467680520

The Friends of Medieval Dublin and Dublin City Council invite to the new series of Tales of Medieval Dublin, a yearly lunchtime lecture series exploring the lives of seven different and fascinating inhabitants of Medieval Dublin. Learn about some of the problems these farmers had to overcome in order to survive in the eleventh century. Each of the six subsequent lectures will run on a Tuesday mid-month from July to December in the Wood Quay Venue of Dublin City Council. Free ROMEO & JULIET PERFORMANCE – RANELAGH
09-14 Aug: Ranelagh Gardens
The cancellation of the Ranelagh Arts Festival got Cracked Light Productions to produce a free (unplugged) performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet in Ranelagh Gardens, but this is not a one-night only performance. No, they will perform the play from 09-14 August in Ranelagh Gardens and then from 17-21 August in Iveagh Gardens. What a brilliant idea!
Cracked Light Productions expect a total of 2,500 people to come. But I think we have to help them to increase that number massively! Put the Romeo&Juliet performance on your MUST-DO list!
The performances begin on 09 Aug at 19:00 and will continue every night at 19:00 until the 12 Aug. Then on the weekend 13+14 Aug, the shows will start at 15:00 already.
You can take the LUAS to the Ranelagh stop, go under the overpass and go through the arch into the Gardens. Walk to the other end of the park and you will find the masses. Bring a blanket or similar and enjoy Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged). Unplugged means that there is no PA or amplification, so be prepared for that. I think this is a brilliant initiative and will definitely go to the performance at some stage. Please spread the word via Facebook and word of mouth. If a group of people puts such a great event together, they deserve to be rewarded with massive audience numbers! www.facebook.com/crackedlightproductions

However, all the haste didn’t help because David Norris ended his attempt to become a candidate for the presidency at the beginning of this week. And with the revelations just before he ended the campaign, the book is already outdated even before the launch. www.writerscentre.ie/html/events/atthecentre.html

RATHDRUM FIREWORKS FESTIVAL
Thurs 11 Aug: Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow
The details about the Rathdrum Fireworks Festival are sketchy or just not existent. I found on entertainment.ie: “Rathdrum Fireworks Festival is a spectacular firework display in the Parnell Memorial Park in Rathdrum, which also offers family entertainment in the Market Square. Fireworks take place approx 22:15. But I couldn’t find out much more and am still puzzled about the fact that the tiny village of Rathdrum has a dedicated Fireworks Festival. And why it takes place on a Thursday is not clear either. But this website www.discoverireland.ie/Whats-On/rathdrum-fireworks-festival/8122 confirms the event and says that the entertainment at the Market Square starts at 20:00. Given the timing and the relative remoteness of Rathdrum, I guess you won’t be able to get there and back without a car. entertainment.ie/festival/display.asp?ID=2818

FESTIVAL DES BATEAUX – DUN LAOGHAIRE
Fri-Sun 12-14 Aug: 14:00-22:00/10:00-20:00 – Dun Laoghaire Harbour & Town Centre. From 12-14 August, the “Festival des Bateaux” in Dun Laoghaire will celebrate the only international stop on French “Solitaire du Figaro” yacht race, a race over 3,390 km. Dun Laoghaire will celebrate with fireworks, music, sights, sounds, foods and joie de vivre of France. The festival features a wide variety of French themed events and attractions. Highlights will include a grand opening ceremony, fireworks on Friday, a festival village with public access to visiting boats, a colourful festival market, a festival stage at Harbour Plaza and a closing ceremony as boats depart on Sunday 14 August. DUBLIN’S MAYOR TO USE TANK AGAINST BAD PARKING?
Unimaginable! Luckily the Dublin mayor (neither the current appointed one nor any future directly elected one) could be imagined to sort out parking problems in Dublin with a tank, but it seems that the problems in Vilnius got so bad that the mayor there decided to go for a PR-effective strategy of destroying one of the cars parked on a cycling lane with a big tank (or correctly: an Armoured Personnel Carrier). The calm reaction of the car owner makes you wonder if the whole thing was just a stunt, but either way, it will make some of the car owners think twice. www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-fWN0FmcIU Cars in wheelchair parking places or on cycling lanes could be a target in Dublin too, but I maybe – at least for the moment – towing cars away is enough of a shock for a car-loving owner!?

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
