Welcome! You are holding the 211th issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” in your virtual hands today and after this newsletter/e-zine was featured last night on “Capital D”, the RTE 1 TV programme about events taking place in Dublin, the Dublin Event Guide Community did grow another bit. Nodlag was the one who came up with the idea to feature the Dublin Event Guide and I am hugely grateful for it! If this is the first issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” you are receiving then you might be surprised how long it is. There are between 80 and 100 free events that I find every week and they could be gigs, festivals, talks & lectures or exhibitions. But I don’t recommend that you intend to read every word in this e-mail magazine. Instead I suggest that you look at the different sections, see what you like and read where you discover something interesting. If you read a newspaper you probably don’t read every single article, but use the headlines to find out what interests you and only read that. Do the same thing with this long newsletter and the huge amount of information becomes VERY manageable.

The events are different every week. The last two weeks were packed with festivals, this week (due to the holidays) there are a few more children’s events and there are a number of gigs. Every week is different and totally depends on the events that are happening.

To find all the information, I crawl/trawl and search through approx. 400 webpages every Thursday night and because the nearly 9000 readers are a very diverse, multicultural and multinational community, the interests are very varied. If it is free and if I can find it, I will let you know about it and then you can decide if you will go to the event or not. Many people send me mails and tell me what amazing events they found through this Dublin Event Guide and maybe you will find a couple of new things to do to. Dublin is full of culture and entertainment and a LOT of it is free, so if you want to enjoy Dublin for free, you found the perfect resource!

We had two super busy weeks and they are now followed by a somewhat quieter weekend. Maybe it is because organisers (wrongly!) assume that everybody has left the country? Luckily it will pick up again and even in a slightly quieter week, there are lots if things you will be able to do. Have fun!

I will be at a conference in London from Friday until Tuesday, so I won’t be enjoying Dublin this weekend, but if I were in Dublin, I would probably go to Temple Bar Food Market (I haven’t been there for ages!) and to the Rail Sail at Airfield Farm on Saturday, then the “Furniture made from Recycled Material” exhibition on Sunday. The Blackrock Hospice Day sounds interesting as well because of a good music programme and for parents the Teddy Bear Picnic and the Natural Play Day are must go events.

The Astronomy lecture, the Mutefish concert and the Patrick Groenland concert – all on Tuesday – catch my attention and I would try to combine all three. ;-) And the Spanish Bull Run is the most interesting Thursday event.

SWING DANCE SOCIAL NIGHT “ROUTE 66” – ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Wed 06 July 20:00 – Turk’s Head, Parliament Street, Dublin 2
Route 66 is a social night of Swing dancing that takes place every Wednesday in the Turk’s Head. There’s an easy drop-in lesson for beginners from 20:00 to 20:45, followed by social dancing until 23:00 (or sometimes later!) featuring all the best Swing music from the 1920s to today, including everything from Duke Ellington to Peggy Lee, from Glenn Miller to Ella Fitzgerald, from Frank Sinatra to even Michael Bublé! On Wed 06 July, Route 66 will be celebrating its 7th anniversary. On top of that Jamie, the organiser/teacher/DJ, will be celebrating 10 years of teaching Swing in Dublin. NEW DUBLIN MAYOR
Another year is over and again a mayor for Dublin has been elected during the week. The mayor is elected by the councillors and we are still waiting for the implementation of a promised law that will introduce a directly elected mayor, elected by the people of Dublin. Many are quite cynical about the role of Dublin’s Mayor because it seems the most important job is to switch on the Christmas lights and to open a few shops and events. However, according to the Irish Times (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0627/breaking62.html), the new mayor has a claim to fame as he “was behind the hugely successful Dublin bike scheme” and his declared goal is to extend the scheme. Let’s wish Andrew Montague success with it and let’s hope that we will have reason to remember him unlike the majority of his predecessors who came and went without any memorable impact. (Do you know the name of the mayor for the last 12 month? Probably not! …his name was Gerry Breen.)

CITY OF THOUSAND WELCOMES
A brand new initiative that was only launched in the middle of June has the intention to make Dublin friendlier as a destination for visitors. Together with volunteers like you and me, some sponsors and the City of a Thousand Welcomes organisation, this can work. Volunteers give their time (not really clear how much) to meet a visitor that has been assigned to them and bring this visitor to a sponsor for a chat where they get a free pint or coffee. The volunteers are not “tourist guides” and are not asked to show anything to the visitor, they are just “greeters”. It remains to be seen if being greeted is something that really will have an impact on visitors and the number of visitors, but there is a lot of potential.

FIVER FRIDAY
Initially invented on Joe Duffy’s Lifeline Radio Programme, the Fiver Friday has grown legs and seems to have found lots of supporters. In quite a number of shops you will be able to get special offers today (Fri 01 July) for EUR 5. The idea came out of the concept that if everyone was to spend an additional EUR 5 in local businesses, this would give a much needed boost to the economy. POINT VILLAGE EVENT CANCELLED
The Point Village area is either jinxed OR it was a bad idea in the first place to expect large number of people to come there – unless it is for a specific concert/event in the Point Theatre / TheO2. And it seems the later is true: The Point Village area is just not suitable for markets and regular events. After the Food & Farmers Market “Point Village Market” with outdoor stage etc, which ran until December 2010 and was then unceremoniously terminated and the Point Village Christmas Market that was promoted but never even got started, now ANOTHER event was terminated well before its time: The promising Point Village Car Boot Sale for up to 200 cars was planned to run until September every Sunday morning but is cancelled with immediate effect. Pity! I wonder how long the Big Wheel will survive there!?

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. CEAD EXHIBITION – NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART
Fri-Sun 01-03 July: 10:00-16:00 – Design for Industry Building, National College of Art & Design, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8. The yearly CEAD exhibition of Evening Students’ work at the National College of Art (NCAD) will take place this weekend. The exhibition contains Painting, Sculpture, Jewellery, Prints, Photography, Ceramics, Textiles, Stained Glass, Multimedia and much more, including work by amateur, professional and award winning artists. HOMELESS GALLERY – PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – D-LIGHT STUDIOS
03-06 July: 11:00-21:00 – D-Light Studios, 46 North Great Clarence St, Dublin 1
The idea behind the “Homeless Gallery” is that there is no entry criteria, it is open to all artists and so at this photography exhibition over 100 artists will be showing their work. There is no curator who selects the pieces, nobody is told what or how to show it and every artist/photographer is allowed in. Everybody finds a piece of wall, ceiling or floor for themselves and hangs their work. All sorts of unconventional forms of display are welcome. The opening for the exhibition is on Sun 03 July from 18:00. Admission is free. www.d-lightstudios.com

FURNITURE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS – MOXIE STUDIOS
Sun 03 July: 10:00-17:00 – Moxie Studios, Pembroke Row, Dublin 2 just off Baggot Street. The ReMake Design Network Chair Extravaganza is promoting sustainable design in Ireland. What happens when you take 100 unwanted chairs and mix with 50 of the brightest young designers Dublin has to offer? You get some weird and wonderful up-cycled furniture which will be retailed through the capitals newest and coolest design shops, Designist and Industry. The ‘Chair Extravaganza’ will see 50 designers forming design teams who will disassemble 100 old chairs and mix and match the pieces to create brand new furniture designs. INK SLINGER CREATIVE WRITING HOUR – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE

The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience. Sarah Griffin will be hosting the Ink Slingers throughout June.

THIBAULT CAUVIN – MASTERCLASS – GUITAR FESTIVAL OF IRELAND
The Guitar Festival of Ireland in 2011, now in its eighth year, has a high quality programme, but unfortunately doesn’t have a single free event – if you check on their own website (www.gfi.ie/booking.html). However, the Chester Beatty Library Website (www.cbl.ie/Programme—Events/Events-Schedule.aspx) and the Cultural Service of the French Embassy (www.ambafrance-ie.org/spip.php?article1639) disagree:
On Fri 01 July at 14:30-16:30 the Parisian guitarist will give a guitar master class in the Chester Beatty Library, with support from the Library and the French Embassy. Both, the Embassy and the Library tell us that the event is free and no booking is required. The Guitar Festival of Ireland, however, is selling this Masterclass for EUR 45! Something is wrong here! I rang the Chester Beatty Library on Thursday around lunchtime and they promised to look into that, AND they confirmed that the class is free. Maybe the gfi.ie website will have been updated by the time you get this mail? (He will give a concert on Sat 02 July at 19:00 in the Chester Beatty Library as well. Tickets for that event are EUR 20/18 and you get a 10% discount when you quote GFICB20 when booking tickets on 01-4433432.)

The Airfield Farm didn’t know any details about the event when I rang the, the organiser from diabetes.ie was not reachable and the websites for the Bubblegum Club and for diabetes.ie (diabetes.ie/Website/content/default.aspx) could have featured the events a bit more prominently. None of the other 400 webpages that I check every Thurday night had the event listed.
By the way: Airfield Farm events are usually NOT free and there is an Admission Charge into the Farm even on Sat, but I am told that the Rail Sale uses a different entrance so that Airfield admission charges do not apply.

YOGA IN THE PARK – PHOENIX PARK
Throughout the summer last year Fiona Moloney was running weekly Yoga classes to raise money for The Dublin Simon Community. It was a successful effort with EUR 1,600 being raised for homeless people in Dublin. Yoga in the Park is now back and will be run by Fiona and Tine Schnell.
Each Saturday at 11:00-12:00 until September, Fiona and Tine will be taking turns to lead the classes. Meeting point is the Bandstand near the Zoo and near the Tea Rooms. Classes will be suitable for all levels and are donation based. That means you can give what you can afford, but please be fair. Fiona and Tine are doing a great job for the Simon Community and they need your support.

ARCHIVE AT LUNCHTIME – FILM SCREENING – IFI

Over the last two months the IFI ran free screenings of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive on Mondays and Wednesdays. The films are really interesting and became so popular that in July the Archive films will be screened every day, but – to make my life interesting when I try to describe that to you – the two films areshown on alternating days. Simply collect your free tickets at the IFI Box Office when you get there. (You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.)
The first film is “Shamrocks Sky High”, sponsored by Aer Lingus and produced by Vincent Corcoran. This film from 1968 shows the company’s operations in Ireland and overseas. The film looks behind the scenes at Dublin Airport and at the expertise involved in developing and maintaining Ireland’s national airline. Over 70 events taking place in Temple Bar will include premieres of site specific theatre, outdoor movies, specially commissioned art installations, Grammy award winning artists and even a world famous high wire walker. It promises to be a great festival and I am already looking forward to it. It is still a little while until the 15 July, but you should read this nevertheless: Most events are free, but some are ticketed and usually tickets for Temple Bar events go quite fast. PROMISES ARE PROMISES?
Do you remember the promises of the last elections? One of them was to reduce the number of TDs (member of parliament) in the Irish Dail (parliament). It was identified that 160 members is a LOT more than what a small country like Ireland needs. The Minister for the Environment has now released a plan for some of the promised changes and instead of the promised reduction by 20 TDs, which many think is not enough of a reduction, the new plan now suggests reducing the number by just 6-13. The argument is that the Irish constitution demands one TD per 30,000 people and with the results of the recent census, which shows that there are more people in Ireland than expected, the reduction of TDs has to be done more conservatively. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
