Hi all!
Did you enjoy the bank holiday weekend? I had a super Sunday, the type of day that I love and that motivates me to continue writing this extensive mine of information week after week. It was a day packed with free events and with meeting nice people (lots of them!). It started with two people and at some point we were 15 who had a brill afternoon and evening together. It all began at the Secret Yelp Party in the Twisted Pepper: Organised by Annie L and her team in Yelp, we had an amazing two hours of free food and drink tasting with 400+ other people (!). The biggest revelation for me was how good the vegetarian food in Cornucopia tastes – I will definitely go to their restaurant soon. After that we moved around the corner to “Saucy Sundays”, a cool weekly live music event in the Grand Social, and later we went to the Sugar Club where Mob Fandango launched their new EP. Their support, Creamy Goodness, blew our socks off with a very unique version of Funk combined with scratching. Strongly recommended! Mob Fandango packed the dance floor afterwards and I had a great time. Over the afternoon we occasionally lost and mostly picked up more and more people at the different even, so that we were about 15 (from seven (!) different countries) in the end.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, the whole day was built with events from last week’s issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. All great events in Dublin and all free. I am sure you had days like that, but think of all your friends who don’t know about this Dublin Event Guide yet. Do a random act of kindness and tell them about it!
They can subscribe on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide by clicking on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left or they can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG. This might help you to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

We now are more than 4400 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Come over and click LIKE too. Be part of this growing online facebook community and tell your friends. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page! And I know you don’t want to miss out!

This week’s Feel Good Slot is a happy song performed by happy people in France. It is called “Je veux” (with English subtitles) and you probably know the song. Have a look at it and smile: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWbdcNmGYJU

NATIONAL ACHIEVERS CONGRESS – LONDON
This is the last chance to book this event. More than 7000 people have already booked and it will definitely sell out.
The National Achievers Congress in London from 02-04 July will bring three of the most inspiring achievers and speakers together on one stage. Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson and Alan Sugar will speak at this 3-day congress. The standard ticket will be GBP 297+VAT soon, but a few more tickets are available for GBP 197+VAT. You can book at successr.infusionsoft.com/go/72/ranger2285/ and you will find out more information there as well.
I have booked my ticket for this event in July. Richard Branson, Anthony Robbins AND Alan Sugar at one event is worth the money, I think.

This week Luke was the only helper! Thanks a lot Luke! But to cover the cost, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide I need another bit more. My part is to give 25 hours per week for no pay to make sure that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. Could you help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year? That’s a bargain! It is to cover the cost, but even if it was pay for me, imagine it would be 1 cent per hour. Maybe I should ask for a LOT more??? ;-)
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads, then please note that only if you click on the link in this e-zine when you order books from bookdepository a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing. And it is similar for most of the other ads.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I will be in Portlaoise for the Gospel Rising Festival (www.gospelrising.ie), so I will miss out on all the great events in Dublin.
If I were around, I would go to the (non-free) Cabaret show by Rose Lawless on Saturday evening (check the Competition section). In addition the Monthly Exchange Market sounds interesting and the Starling Night Market on Saturday. On Sunday the Lift your Voice Up event in Dartmouth Square is definitely worth a visit and then later the Cujo and Moo gig caught my attention. Since I will be back on Sunday, I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir “Gig in God’s Gaff”. ;-)
From Monday “Digitise the Nation” will take place and while it is a bit disappointing, there are a small number of interesting events. The “Lessons from the crisis” event would be something for me too.
On Tuesday it would be Milk & Cookies that I would try out. Never went there before and the Live Band Karaoke sounds cool.
And then on Wednesday I would go to the Drinking Water Fluoridation talk, it is an issue that I feel very strongly about. And the Murder in the City Literature Night sounds intriguing too. The Greenhouse talk in the RDS on Thursday completes a week that is filled with events, but has no real big headline events. See what you can find for yourself! :-)

SOUL PICNIC ON FOR TWO, NOT JUST ONE DAYS
Great news from the Dublin City Soul Festival. The Soul Picnic, which is a party in Merrion Square with lots of great music, will extend over TWO days this year. In it’s 5th year, the Soul Festival keeps growing and after previous years only had a one day event in Merrion Square, this year, there will be two days of great music. Strictly speaking the Sunday is the Soul Picnic and the event on Saturday is called “Rising Stars @ Merrion Square”, when from midday a selection of the 2011 Rising Stars along with some very special guests will be performing live in Merrion Square Park. Watch out for more news and updates about the upcoming Dublin City Soul Festival from 26-29 May. www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie
OPEN CITIES DUBLIN
The website looks awful and is close to un-readable, but the event seems to be good and interesting: www.opencitiesdublin.net/. Open Cities Dublin is taking place this week and there are numerous events taking place. OPENCities Dublin is a collaborative project between the British Council in partnership with Dublin City Council, City Governments world-wide, the European Commission and a range of international partners. It is programmed and curated by FOMACS, the DIT-based Forum on Migration and Communications. Whoever designed the website seemed to have been more on a sabotage mission that trying to help, but you can find an easier readable calendar on this page www.fomacs.org/event_detail.php?day=10&month=5&year=2011
I have only included a few events in this Dublin Event Guide, check the website for the full list.
OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN – FUND IT
Good news, the Fundit appeal by the Open House Team (I wrote about it last week) was successful. The necessary money got raised, which means there will be a little book with this year’s Open House event again! Thanks to all who supported them: www.fundit.ie/project/funders/open-house-dublin-book

BUSINESSES IN TROUBLE – TOPGIFTS + XTRAVISION
+ TopGifts, a site that sold gift vouchers for Flying Lessons, Hot Air Balloon Trips, Rally Driving, Off Roading, Scuba Diving etc. did go into liquidation. Many service providers have not been paid and people that still have vouchers that they got as presents, will have lost out. If you are affected, check with the company that was meant to provide the driving/flying/diving lesson etc. You might be able to negotiate a compromise, but it is not looking good. www.topgifts.ie provides an e-mail address, but since it is a liquidation, you shouldn’t expect much back. Some more opionions are here www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056252303
+ Xtravision, is in trouble as well, but still standing. An examiner has been appointed and will try to rescue what can be rescued. Like in many cases in recent months, the shockingly high rental rates are mentioned as the main reason for this development. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2011/0430/1224295762976.html
YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
An 18-year-old craftsman became Ireland’s young entrepreneur of the year. Kyle McMahon from Coolock has set up a toy-making business and is on target to achieve a net profit of more than EUR 3,000 for his first five months in operation. Great achievement! But do we want all young people to be like him? He was thrown out of secondary school “for being a messer” and had a baby when he was 17? Well, let’s hope that he “rose in the face of adversity” and is now a transformed person. ;-)

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More new company introductions to come!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Resisting the system, without offering an alternative, is no longer sufficient. Part of the answer is to construct infrastructures that allow the common creation of value, but that embed new social values in the technology itself. This is in fact happening on a global basis as the technologies for sharing knowledge, software and designs, are merging with more distributed machinery and mission-oriented organizational forms, as well as new forms of human awareness that together offer a promise of integrated social change.” www.knowledgeexchange.ie

DIGITISE THE NATION
09-13 May: Various locations, mainly around Dublin.
Digitise the Nation is an annual initiative run by the Irish Internet Association (IAA) to raise awareness of the opportunities Internet usage can create in the lives of all the people of Ireland. The idea is good, but the number and types of events are a little disappointing considering that the IAA tried to get all their members to contribute. As always with educational initiatives, the Libraries come up with the best events. Then there are a few webinars and that was nearly it. Underwhelming to say the least! Check out dtn11.irishinternetassociation.com/category/events/upcoming/ for a list of all events.
LESSONS FROM THE CRISIS – CONFERENCE – CROKE PARK
Mon 09 May: 09:30-16:00 – Croke Park Conference Centre, Jones’ Road, Dublin 3
Together with TASC, Smart Taxes will be hosting the conference “Lessons from the Crisis: Money, Taxes and Saving in a Changing World”. The euro area crisis rumbles on, but the austerity measures favoured have been unable to stabilise and revitalise economies, while the looming threats of resource peak and climate change are ignored. A new approach is clearly needed at national and European levels. Lessons from the Crisis will showcase alternative economic policies that aim to recover economic control, halt the loss of jobs and emigration and create a secure future for young and old in Ireland.
Three leading US-based exponents of the Modern Money Theory school will share their perspective on routes out of the crisis. There will also be a session devoted to pension security, and another exploring the possibilities of a new fiscal framework for Ireland. Attendance is free, lunch is included.

(You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.) The film on Mon is “A Second Of June” (1984, 40min) The visit of President Ronald Reagan was greeted with much less enthusiasm than the visit of John F Kennedy in 1963. This delicately told tale follows two young people on their Ulyssean wanderings through Dublin on the day of his visit, capturing the clamour of the anti-Reagan protesters and providing a finely textured picture of Dublin street life in the early ‘80s.

EUROPE LEAGUE TROPHY DISPLAY – CENTRAL LIBRARY
Mon 09 – Fri 13 May: Central Library, ILAC Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1
This year, Dublin is the venue for the UEFA Europe League final. On 18 May the two finalists, which are coincidentally TWO Portuguese football clubs (FC Porto and SC Braga) will play against each other. It is probably not the best news for the fans that they all have to come from ONE country and travel by plane to the final. Logistically it would be easier if they came from two different countries. But either way, Dublin will be full of football fans on that weekend. The Europe League trophy already arrived in Dublin on 19 April and will be displayed in the Central Library during the coming week during Library opening hours. Admission is free.

BIN LADEN, THE US GOVERNMENT AND THE TRUTH
Last Sunday we got a surprise when in the middle of the bank holiday weekend the news broke that Osama bin Laden had been caught and killed. The story sounded dramatic: 24 Navy Seals Elite Soldiers stormed the heavily protected compound, fought their way through the building and found bin Laden shooting back, using his wife as a human shield but it all wasn’t enough for him to get away and he was shot. The Navy Seals managed somehow to lose a helicopter (it toppled over and had to get destroyed) and the whole operation was watched as it happened by Barack Obama and his staff who saw it through the helmet camera of one of the US soldiers.
There are lots of differing opinions about the rightfulness of killing bin Laden and I don’t want to enter that discussion here, but what I want to mention instead is how truth and honesty died on the same day.
Many never expected truth and honesty from any government and especially the world’s police force, the US government. But a lot of people (me included) had hoped that Barack Obama stood for a different approach. That he was breaking with the “tradition” of his predecessors and would insist on truth and honesty. Unfortunately this is not the case.
We found out now that most of the story was completed invented and it makes you wonder if ANY of it is true. Now, this was not revealed by people that others conveniently discard as “conspiracy theorists”, but it was revealed by the US government themselves.
It turns out that bin Laden was NOT armed when he was killed, he did NOT use a “human shield” and Obama, Clinton and the rest did NOT watch the events as they happened, so the picture with them in the scenario room was sent around the world with a totally wrong and fabricated claim.
A press conference by the US government even admits that the story is still being changed (watch at minute 05:16): www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uuiWzzb5ss
Can we – after this – believe ANYTHING?
…and before you are tempted to send me a mail telling me what a terrible person bin Laden was, please note that I am NOT raising the point of the operation being just or not! I am ONLY expressing that I am disappointed about the lies that were released as facts.

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
