———————————————————————
Hi all!
I expected to find a few less events this week, because of Easter, but unlike other bank holiday weekends, the Easter weekend is definitely not a quiet one. And there are some really good events. Have a look at “Joerg’s Picks” to find out what I will do or would like to do.
It has been a time since I said something about the length and the look of this e-zine/newsletter. I know that many feel overwhelmed when they get this super long mail and when you realise that you can’t read the whole thing, some might even consider giving up reading it on a regular basis, but think about it this way: This e-zine is a resource of information, like a newspaper or a encyclopaedia. A newspaper of encyclopaedia you wouldn’t necessarily read from the first to the last word, but you would use the headlines to find what interest you and would only read that. That’s the way you should do it with this Dublin Event Guide. It is toooo long to read the whole thing, I know that! I am writing it! :-P So pick and chose and enjoy bits.
I know that some only read the Dublin News or only the “This is ODD” section and that is fine as well.
The reason for this mail being so long, is that I don’t want to tell you what you should like. I am giving you the choice that is really out there.
[ad]
By the way, it makes it MUCH easier if you see the headlines over the day sections, but I realise that some of you do NOT have pictures enabled in your hotmail or Gmail account. Make sure that you see the graphics in this mail, it makes it a lot easier to read. And if you don’t know how to get to see the pictures, drop me a mail and I will try to help!
Share the love with your friends and family and tell them about this weekly e-Zine. If anybody ever tells you they are bored in Dublin or they complain that there is nothing happening, poke them and get them to subscribe to Dublin Event Guide. They can do that on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide by clicking on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left or they can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG. This might help you to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

We now are more than 4200 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Come over and click LIKE too. Be part of this growing online facebook community and tell your friends. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page! And I know you don’t want to miss out!

This week’s Feel Good Slot video clip was suggested to me, by a very supportive and helpful person. (It sometimes is difficult to find GOOD videos.) I know that last week’s video clip was just amazing, so don’t compare. This week’s clip is home grown and just asks lots of people “What makes you happy?”. Enjoy!

NATIONAL ACHIEVERS CONGRESS – LONDON
The National Achievers Congress in London from 02-04 July will bring three of the most inspiring achievers and speakers together on one stage. Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson and Alan Sugar will speak at this 3-day congress. The standard ticket will be GBP 297+VAT soon, but a few more tickets are available for GBP 197+VAT. You can book at successr.infusionsoft.com/go/72/ranger2285/ and you will find out more information there as well.
I have booked my ticket for this event in July. Richard Branson, Anthony Robbins AND Alan Sugar at one event is worth the money, I think.

This week Ciaran W, Isabel F and Brendan M decided that the Dublin Event Guide is so helpful that they made a donation. A BIG thanks! Their donation will secure that you ALL will continue to receive this newsletter every week. You can contribute too and help and even if you have donated a few years back, see if you maybe can help again.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

On Sat I plan to do some of the good old regular things, like going to the Temple Bar Food Market, or to the HaPenny Flea Market. Saturday is a little quieter than usual, so it gives me time to do that.
On Sunday I will probably go to Farmleigh House (or on Monday) for a while, then there is the Dublin Flea Market and the Mad Hatters Tea Party (not really made for me, but I just want to see HOW mad it is. ;-) ). The Brazilian Carnaval Party sounds good as well. Maybe I will find time! And in the evening I will – as every week – help the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir to sound good.
On Monday I will try to go to the IFI Archive at Lunchtime show if I can make it in time on this day off.
On Tuesday you have the last chance to go tot Shebeen Flick and an interesting documentary will be shown, so give it a go. The other event is the strange and odd sounding event by Gavin Friday, called “Catholic”.
On Wednesday the Swiss Men’s Choir could be good, and definitely the Brown Bread Mixtape, which regularly gets rave reviews.
Then on Friday get ready for the weekend with a number of interesting events, one of them is a big event in Merrion Square, called “Mindfield”. Check it out!

______Competition______________
SANZKRIT – TICKET COMPETITION
The band Sanzkrit from Monaghan will be in the Workman’s Club in Dublin on 04 May and they contacted me. Many of you would have heard them or of them before. They performed at the Electric Picnic 2008 and have lots of other impressive accolades as you can see here www.breakingtunes.com/sanzkrit For their Dublin gig in May, they decided to make two pairs of tickets available for a competition and if you want to win a pair, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SANZKRIT in the subject and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on 03 May. I had a listen to some of their songs and I really like it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmUct2Omud8 So, you might decide that you don’t want to rely on Lady Luck and instead just go to the gig directly. You can do that too, tickets will be available at the door (EUR 8/6), but here is something that will interest you the: The nice guys from Sanzkrit will do a draw on the night of the gig from the list of the Event Guide Readers that will be present on the night and two winners will get the Sanzkrit album as a thank you for coming. How will you make sure your name is in the hat for the album draw on the night? Just enter the ticket competition (you might even win!) and when you arrive at the Workman’s Club on the night, tell them that you heard about it from the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”.
JCI CONFERENCE – TICKET COMPETITION
JCI (Junior Chamber International) gives young people in their 20s and 30s the opportunity to develop new skills while working on business and community projects, attending local, national and international high-impact events. I was at a few JCI events and that is definitely a switched on group of people! JCI Dublin is organising an international event on 29-30 April. The event is the “Green Light Weekend” which will focus on promoting Ireland and economic opportunities of the “renewable” sector and JCI Dublin has made one conference ticket available for a Dublin Event Guide reader. If the conference interests you and you can find out a bit more here jcidublin.com/news/2010/jci-dublin-organises-the-green-light-weekend.html then send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with JCI in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. I normally don’t do first past the post competitions, but because it is so soon, I will do it this time, so the FIRST person sending me a mail with JCI in the subject will get the ticket!
For more information about this event, feel free to contact info@jcidublin.com
THE COLOUR TEAM – FREE WASH & BLOW DRY
The Colour Team, a new Hair Management company in the Crescent Shopping Centre, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15 (near Blanchardstown) made three sets of free Wash & Blow Dry treatments (including Complimentary Conditioning Treatment) available for a competition to celebrate their new opening. However, I didn’t get a chance to do the draw yet, so I will let you know next week who the winners are.
The Colour Team in Mulhuddart can be reached on (01) 8218595 and by sending a FREETEXT “INFO” to 50015. Website etc is in the making and will be available soon.

______Dublin News______________
SOGO FESTIVAL CANCELLED
Last year was the first year for the SoGo Festival, which took place between South William Street and South Great George’s Street. It was a nice little festival with HUGE potential and I won’t forget it because I saw for the first time a performance of Shadaan Felfeli, a writer, actor and performer, who is absolutely outstanding. I was looking forward to more arts and culture this year, but it seems the SoGo Festival is following the Martime Festival and the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures onto the graveyard of festivals. What a pity! Interestingly, it seems that the organisers were able to secure a good bit of money, but they still decided to cancel it.
I wonder if there is a fundamental problem in the approach of festival organisers in Ireland: At least for three events or festivals I heard the explanation that they decided not to run an event because they didn’t see the possibility to make it bigger and better than last year’s event. Why does it always have to bigger and better? I’d say most us would be happy with “as good” or even with “smaller, but at least it is taking place” I would be VERY happy with a significantly smaller Maritime Festival or Festival of World Cultures. Anything is better than NOT having these festivals or events. Maybe we have to point out to organisers that we are a lot less demanding than they seem to think.
LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA FINISHED
As I had predicted, the Lighthouse Cinema was not able to stop the termination of the company. The landlord did whatever he could to finish the business and I would say he certainly will benefit from that somehow. Yes, the location wasn’t great and maybe the cinema owners were a bit overoptimistic when they signed the contract that finished them, but it certainly is a pity to see another cultural aspect of Dublin to disappear due to unrealistic rents. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0415/lighthouse-business.html
NEW CULTURE – HOUSE AUCTIONS
With cinemas and festivals having to give up, I was concerned that our cultural richness would get damaged, but when I read this article about the recent Fire Sale of houses, I realised that we just have to redefine culture and all is good again: www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/bargain-prices-at-fire-sale-house-auction-501497.html :-) See where one of the keen buyers says “This is as good as being at a play, it’s as good as the Abbey Theatre”. Not sure if that will be appreciated by the people in the Abbey Theatre, but this guy might be on to something! ;-)
FINANCE BOOK FOR CHILDREN
Seamus Brady from www.thriftypages.ie informed me about a new book that Emma Kennedy, a personal finance journalist with the Sunday Business Post, has just written. The book is for kids and intends to help your children understand the importance of their relationship with money. I don’t have any children, but I will definitely have a look at this book, because there is a massive need of educating children about money a lot earlier and in a more constructive way. Here is some information about the new book:
www.thriftypages.ie/2011/04/megan-and-the-money-tree-a-finance-book-for-your-kids.html
DISAPPEARING SIGNS OF THE TIMES
One of the iconic signs in our streetscape will disappear soon, so have a look at it again while it is still there, it could be gone in a couple of week.
I am not talking about the sign for the Anglo Irish Bank, which was taken down already last week (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0420/breaking17.html) and the smart people ;-) at www.broadsheet.ie already had a suggestion what could follow the Anglo Irish Bank in their offices at St. Stephen’s Green: www.broadsheet.ie/2011/04/20/that-didnt-take-long-2/
No, the sign I am talking about is that one of an other bankrupt bank: The Irish Nationwide Sign is next to O’Connell Bridge on the Northside of the Liffey and because all Irish Nationwide offices will close down and will then be sold, the sign will go. It is not the prettiest sign, but it was there for nearly 40 years! Here you can see it the way it still is www.rogerwendell.com/images/ireland/roger_and_tami_wendell_dublin_14_october_2006.jpg The bank was formed in 1973, so before that (this picture is from before 1967) it wasn’t there yet travel.webshots.com/photo/1074032095014803628TOGTgs but then after 1973 it was mounted travel.webshots.com/photo/1071556844014803628KrLaQB Have a look at the cars on O’Connell Street! Postcards from the past are interesting. And here is another one, fairly new. ;-) travel.webshots.com/photo/1071456195014803628Vjnpko The sign is clearly visible.
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More new company introductions to come!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

______Friday___________________
GOOD FRIDAY
On Fri 22 April is Good Friday this year. This is the Friday before Easter in the Catholic (and Christian) Calendar. It is quite a big church holiday and many think that therefore it is a bank holiday. And you are right, it IS a BANK holiday and all schools have a day off. BUT strangely and surprisingly it is NOT a public holiday, which means that you don’t have a right to take the day off. Some employers give a day off, others don’t. All pubs are closed and some museums as well. This means that as far as culture and entertainment is concerned, this day is definitely not very eventful.
WAY OF THE CROSS – PHOENIX PARK
Fri 22 Apr: 12:30-14:30 – Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park
“Communion and Liberation”, an international catholic group for lay people is doing a Good Friday “Way of the Cross” in Phoenix Park with Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. The ninth yearly “Way of the Cross” procession starts at the Wellington Monument at 12:30 and then stops at five stations before reaching the Papal Cross. . This increasingly popular Good Friday event, which Dr Martin has taken part in every year since his return to Dublin, continues to the Papal Cross, stopping at five “stations” along the way. www.clonline.org/ie
STEPHEN YOUNG & THE UNION – IN-STORE EVENT – TOWER RECORDS
Fri 22 Apr: 13:00 – Tower Records, 6-8 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
An in-store event with “Stephen Young & The Union” is taking place.

IKEA EASTER ACTIVITIES
Ikea in Ballymun has lots of activities and treats for children around Easter, Arts Workshops, Easter Egg Hunts, Face Painting, Magicians, it’s a paradise for children. Check here to find out all the details www.ikea.com/ie/en/store/dublin/activities
INK SLINGERS CREATIVE WRITING HOUR – WRITERS’ CENTRE
Because of Good Friday, I am not sure if this event will take place:
Fr 22 Apr: 13:00 – Irish Writers’ Centre, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience. www.writerscentre.ie/html/events/atthecentre.html
URBAN OUTFITTERS – TEMPLE BAR
The Urban Outfitters Good Friday Bash is becoming an odd Irish institution. Because it is not permitted to sell alcohol on Good Friday, but you are allowed to give it away for free, Urban Outfitters had a party for the last two years where music, free beer and discounts were available. It seems that this year the party is longer 10:00-20:00 and the discounts (20%) are available again, but there is definitely less emphasis on the free beer. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1491398321&sk=wall
2. We are organising a special music + meditation program, a mention on you website will be great and the wordings could be something like:
MUSIC AND MEDITATION – RADISSON HOTEL
Sat 23 Apr: 19:00 – Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin 8.
The people from Sahaja Yoga, who run weekly free yoga meditation sessions, are today inviting to a free introduction to meditation with live music (band from Ireland and the UK) to elevate your spirit and enjoy your true self. The event is free and open for all ages. For more information visit www.sahajayoga.ie

EASTER RISING COMMEMORATION – O’CONNELL STREET
At Easter 1916 the Easter Rising, took place in Ireland. It was a revolution against the British occupants and it all started with the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. Go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proclamation_of_the_Irish_Republic and to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Rising to find out more. The attempt failed and after 7 days of fighting, the leaders of the Easter Rising were arrested and later executed. Despite the failure of the insurrection, it was a hugely important event in Irish history because it started events that lead to the Irish Independence in 1948. In comparison to other revolutions, it was a very small effort with only approx. 1,250 participants on the Irish side in Dublin (facing up to 17,000) on the other side and with “only” a total of around 430 casualties. But the leaders of the Easter Rising and their comrades are celebrated again since 2006 (due to the conflict in Northern Ireland, commemorations were avoided until then). Oddly (and you can read more in the “This is ODD” section at the end of this Dublin Event Guide) the commemoration has a hugely anachronistic military parade as its central event.
Considering how Easter moves depending on the moon, it is a big coincidence that this year Easter Sunday is exactly on the same date as the beginning of the Easter Rising in 1916, which was the Easter Monday in 1916. But oddly the celebration in previous years took always place on Easter Sunday and never on 24 April.
—–
The 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration Event this year will take place on Sun 24 April outside the GPO on O’Connell St. President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be in O’Connell Street and the event starts at 12:00. At noon on Sunday, the Irish flag will be lowered on the GPO and then the 1916 Proclamation will be read by Lt Paul O’Brien of the Naval Service. President McAleese will lay a wreath in memory of those who died in 1916 and a minute’s silence will be observed. 300 soldiers of the Irish Defence Forces are taking part and marched in previous years behind tanks etc. The 30-minute ceremony will end with a flypast by the Air Corps. If you plan to attend the event, you are asked to “be in position” by 11:30. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0420/rising.html
—-
If you plan to drive into the City Centre or through the City Centre (or had planned to take the Aircoach in O’Connell Street) be aware that O’Connell Street will be closed from 05:00-15:00. In addition there will be matches on in Croke Park, with the first match starting at 14:00. So, the City Centre will be VERY busy.

MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY – MOUNT MERRION, STILLORGAN
Sun 24 Apr: 13:00-17:00 – Deerpark, Mount Merrion, near Stillorgan
On Easter Sunday 24 Apr in Deerpark, all is not quite what it seems as a white rabbit, a mad Hatter and a little girl called Alice host a most unusual tea party complete with a tea cup ride, giant chess, croquet, a hat walk, balloons, an Easter trail and a host of surprises on picnic tables under a tree.
The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is one of the most famous scenes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. To celebrate Easter and the full bloom of spring, DLR Events invite young and old to put on their maddest hat and come to the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Characters in costume from that famous scene in Alice in Wonderland such as the White Rabbit, Alice, and the Mad Hatter himself will be there to greet ‘guests’ to their very special tea party on long wooden tables with pretty red and white check table cloths under a tree.
Take a ride in a teacup or be a pawn in a giant chess game, have a game of croquet or hear the story of Alice in Wonderland from a special storyteller and with ‘Make & Do’ for the little ones, a great free day out for all the family. Visitors will be encouraged to dress up as one of the Alice in Wonderland characters, and wear the maddest hat possible. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to show off hats and costumes on the purpose built “Hat walk” – strut your stuff to the sounds of the dlr Events DJ.
Bring a picnic or buy some tea and cakes from the tuck shop and dine at the picnic tables. This year the Mad Hatters Tea Party falls on Easter Sunday so a highlight will be the new Easter trail. Follow the signs around the park, collect the code words from the back of the signs, get them all right and collect an Easter treat.

CATHOLIC – ONE-DAY EXPOSITION – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Tues 26 Apr: 12:00-00:00: Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Gavin Friday and graphic designer Pete Reddy commissioned one writer and three photographers to work on the presentation of Gavin’s latest album ‘catholic’. With “‘catholic’ – An Exposition”, Gavin Friday is making an art intervention, with a one day only gallery installation which will be punctuated by live performances at undisclosed times.
If you have read these lines and have still not the slightest clue what the whole thing is about, then you know how I feel. Descriptions from artists are indecipherable pieces of “art” themselves, but since Gavin Friday is involved, I expect “outrageous” and “controversial” and the album cover might give an indication: www.galleryofphotography.ie/events/catholic.html
This exposition is a one-day event only, so if you have some time, pop your head in the door of the gallery and tell me about what you experienced. ;-)

______This is odd!!______________
Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
MILITARY PARADE IN O’CONNELL STREET
Rolling Tanks, marching soldiers and military plane fly pasts is something we remember from the cold war period in Russia and are memories of the Red Square in Moscow (i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01625/parade_1625891c.jpg), but an odd yearly spectacle in Dublin is not much different. The Easter Rising Parade every Easter Monday reminds of the anachronistic army displays in communist countries. Oddly the Irish Government decided in 2006 that this is an appropriate way of remembering the people that died for Irish Independence and it hasn’t been changed since. I am all in favour of a commemoration that recognises the importance of this event in Irish history, but tanks and army battalions in O’Connell Street on Easter Sunday?
Another aspect that strikes me odd is the fact that the day is not celebrated when it happened, but on a different day every year. Yes, it was Easter 1916, but it would be strange if the Bastille Day or the Independence Day were celebrated on a different day every year. Commemorations typically happen in the day the event took place. Imagine your birthday was moving with the moon and was on a different day every year!? The anniversary of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic is on 24 April and it is a big coincidence that this year Easter is exactly again on 24 April, so for the first time since 1916 the commemoration is on the correct day!
The facebook page “Republic Day Ireland” lobbies for the introduction of a celebration on 24 April every year.
