Hi all!

I can’t believe it is already March! The year is racing by again, but the weather is getting significantly better and the sun is back, so that is certainly a great development. The number of events is growing as well and as hard as it will be, I will have to start cutting out some events because this weekly newsletter is just bursting out of the seams. There are promising news about some of the upcoming festivals. The St. Patrick’s Day Festival will obviously be the first real outdoor festival of the year, but at the end of May the Dublin City Soul Festival will be back and things are looking good for you, me and the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” getting involved at this great festival. I can’t reveal too much yet, but I can promise you that I will inform you as soon as possible about all developments. ;-)

A new Dail (the Irish Parliament) has been elected and there is a good chance that next week we will have a new government in Ireland. The first Dail session is on 09 March and it wouldn’t surprise me if the new coalition was formed before that day.

Closer to home, i.e. at the Dublin Event Guide HQ, I am still trying to find a smart way to get MANY new subscribers FAST. Don’t get me wrong, 30-70 new subscribers per week is not bad, but it takes awfully long to world domination that way! :-))))))

Today the Event Guide is full of Library Events/Talks. The International Woman’s Day, the Dublin Book Festival, the World Book Night and the Library Ireland Week all happen in the same week and are contributors. If you are not too keen on books, you might feel left out, but there are plenty of music events as well and even Gravitation for the Urban culture kids. ;-)

I plan to go to the Dublin Book Festival this weekend, maybe even take part in one of the two walking tours on Sunday and with a bit of luck I will get one of the books that will be handed out for free on Saturday night for World Book Night.

On Sunday I plan to go to the Dussian Culture Festivities in Cow’s Lane as well and will in general maybe do a weekend of tourist activities. Every now and then it makes sense to be a tourist in your own town. We often go to every museum, sight, attraction and church when we are abroad on holidays, but at home, we take things fro granted. This week I want to appreciate Dublin for what it is. :-)

TUTANKHAMUN – TOMB & TREASURE – TICKET COMPETITION
The organisers of the exhibition “Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” made two pairs of tickets available for a competition. The exhibition tells you all about the grave of Tutanhamun, who died when he was just 19 years old. You can see life size replicas of his tomb, coffin, the famous mask and 1,000 burial artefacts. I spent about 2.5 hours there and the time just flew. The exhibition will run from 18 Feb until 23 July and it is in the Industries Hall in the RDS. Tickets are EUR 16 for adults during the week and EUR 18 at the weekend and tickets are for a specific time-slot (once you are in, you can take as much time as you need). I received HUNDREDS (!!) of competition entries and I would have loved to give each of you a pair of tickets. EIRCOM EFFICIENCY?
An interesting development at Eircom, the most disliked telecommunications provider in the country. The company is in SERIOUS financial difficulties, having accumulated debts of EUR 3.8 billion (!!) and after recent price increases, now the staff has to take a pay cut of 10%. But this is not done like in many other companies where you just get 10% less money for the same work, instead in Eircom employees will now only work 9 days per fortnight. So they work one day less and get consequently no money for that day. The gallery is filled with a collection of identical plinths – a wonderful white, endless sculpture. These structures are commonly used for the display of objects and items, things that demand our attention on top of their isolated, white pillars. But Ceal Floyer’s plinths stand empty, starkly white in a starkly white room, and the objects and items are replaced by a beguilingly simple aural representation of their mass: by isolating one single item from a range of pop songs – the word thing – Floyer has assembled a multi-channel playback of dissonant edits, pinging and chiming all over the room. Embedded in the plinths are speakers, while running neatly along the floor are symmetrically aligned speaker cables, creating a comedic relationship between the stiff-necked, monumental white orchestra and its more random, disharmonic musical production. www.projectartscentre.ie/programme/whats-on/1226-things

DUBLIN BOOK FESTIVAL 2011
Wed 02 – Sun 06 Mar: Dublin City Hall, Dame Street, Dublin 2
The Dublin Book Festival will take place from Wed-Sun with the weekend full of events in City Hall. Over 60 of Ireland’s leading authors, poets and journalists will gather in Dublin and the festival has been extended this year from three to five days. The core events will be in City Hall in Dame Street, with other events taking place in many other venues, including the National Library of Ireland and the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar. The programme will feature over 50 readings, debates, book launches, workshops and events for children. GRAVITATION 2011 – MONKSTOWN
On 05+06 March from 11:00-16:00, the Skate Park at the swimming pool in Monkstown (dlr Leisure Services Monkstown) will be home to boards, bikes, blades and beats for Gravitation 2011. Watch the power and skill of skateboarding and BMX displays and marvel at the speed and agility of expert bladers with cool hip hop beats. Internationally recognised names representing Indy, Unabomber and Boarderco, including Al Hooi, Conor Manweiler, Mark Dolan, John Kelly and Mark (Snowy) Brew will test their skills. The MC for the day will be Dyl.
Gravitation 2011 is an initiative by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and will feature demonstrations by experts over the 2 days at the state of the art Skate Park at dlr Leisure Services Monkstown. The skate park will be available for free to test your skills and experts will be on hand to provide tips throughout the event. The aim of the event is to include alternative sports and urban culture in Ireland and provide a platform to showcase boards, bikes, blades and beats at their best. It is based on a collaboration between publishers, authors, librarians and booksellers and will see one million books distributed to 25,000 givers in the UK and Ireland who in turn will be handing them out to their friends, relatives and complete strangers on the night. Each giver has selected a book from a list of 25 that they really love and strongly recommend – and think everyone should read.

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. Now Smightfield Plaza is to be modernised again and only hald the Plaza is available, which caused some stir since the market on Sunday is meant to be the biggest: www.rte.ie/news/2011/0303/smithfield.html
The market starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming early (maybe around 09:00-10:00). I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market and are not happy about its existence. Please note as well that I am NOT suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there or watching the event will not change anything good or bad and does not support the event. In fact, I think that if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
The International Women’s Day on 08 March is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. The Richard Tuttle Lecture and Seminar Series “Points of Departure, Lines of Flight” will take place from 03 Feb-08 Apr in the Hugh Lane Gallery. Over the course of 5 weeks artists, critics, and curators will respond to the Richard Tuttle exhibition and take a point of departure to discuss current arts practice. MOON WATCH – PHOENIX PARK

Astronomy Ireland will be hosting Nationwide Moon Watches in various locations all around the country. At these Watches, you will get to see some amazing features on the Moon, including huge mountain ranges, deep valleys, and vast craters on a stark landscape. The Moon will be placed near the Pleiades, a “young” cluster of stars that’s easily visible with the naked eye, and a spectacular sight with binoculars or a telescope. FINNISH CHAMBER CHOIR – UNITARIAN CHURCH + ST. PATRICK’S
The Vir gin Mary Project is a cross-cultural project, in which the Finnish chamber choir Novena and mosaic artist Minna Floman combine music and mosaic art in a unique way. The project culminates in spring 2011 in the publishing of a CD of A
Cappella choir music, choir concerts and a mosaic art exhibition – all around the theme Vir gin Mary. The Novena choir will present the Maria repertoire in a concert in the Unitarian Church in Dublin on Sat 12 Mar at 19:00. Novena is the chamber choir of the Swedish Lutheran parish in Espoo, close to capital Helsinki in

EQUALITY? WE ARE NOT EQUAL!!
Did you hear about the decision of the European Court of Justice regarding car insurances? The court has decided that it is not fair and against the principle of equality to charge difference car insurance rates for men and women. Currently women pay a good bit less than men based on the insurance’s calculation that men are a higher risk than women, but that is now not allowed anymore. The consequence is that the car insurance cost for women will rise. But do you really thing the cost for men will drop? I would bet that the insurances might give a tiny decrease to men, but will charge a massive increase to women and in the end the insurance will pocket a bigger chunk.
Apart from that, it is ridiculous for a court to decide that men and women are the same. And NO, I don’t intend to discuss the behaviour patterns of male versus female drivers. Instead I find the whole equality idea ridiculous. As a man, I will THANKFULLY never have monthly pains and will never get pregnant and there are many other things that I will be able or not be able to do in comparison to women. As long as these definite differences are there, why does this absurd political correctness that our society has adopted result in us thinking that all should be equal? Sure in many areas women are outright discriminated against and that has to change, but thinking that all people are equal no matter what gender, age, size, cultural or racial background they have is just ridiculous.
