Hi all!

The life post-Christmas is back to “normality”, whatever “normality” is! ;-) For me it is lots of plans and ideas and exciting opportunities and I hope it is the same for you. :-) My slight problem is, though, that 24 hours per day are just not enough to do everything I would love to do and achieve. Do you have a similar challenge? My guess is that most of you do know what I am talking about because if you were the “easily bored” type, you would NOT read an Event Guide full of free events! ;-) But maybe you know a few people that could do with some help to find something to do? Tell them about this newsletter!

This week, I will be part of teaching 65 people how to defend themselves should they get in difficulty at a 2-day course with www.kravmagaireland.com In addition I will go to a (non-free) Gospel Concert in Tallaght on Saturday evening and then later to two parties. But in the afternoon, I will try to spend at least a little time in Temple Bar to see what is happening for the Tradfest. And if I had time I would definitely go to the Rip Tide Movement Gig in Lucan.
On Sunday there is more training, but if I could, I would go to the Dublin Flea Market (Apologies that I wrongly listed it last week! My mistake!) and in the evening the Mob Fandango gig and the Santoria gig would be on my must-go list.
On Tuesday the Storymap launch sounds good, but we have a gig with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir where I need to be. On Thursday the BTW Meetup is on my list, but I might be away next weekend and then I will have to start writing the Event Guide early. Busy as always. LOL

ST PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
The programme of the St. Patrick’s Day Festival has been launched and is available on
www.stpatricksdayfestival.ie This year the festival weekend starts with the St. Patrick’s Day on 17 March and continues until 20 March. The programme is similar to last year’s which is good. So the festival parade, the Fun Fairs, a Treasure Hunt and the brilliant Big Day Out will take place again. In addition there will be the Gannon Cup Boat Race on St. Patrick’s Day this year and a (non-free) cultural evening in the Concention Centre will take place. Good news: The Ceili at Stephen’s Green will be back, however it will take place on 18 March, not on St. Patrick’s Day after the parade as until last year. The big disappointment AGAIN is that the Skyfest, the big fireworks, will probably again take place somewhere far away from where most people are. The location hasn’t been announced yet, but it seems that the sponsor (National Lottery) doesn’t like the 1.5 mio people in Dublin, but prefers to go to the small towns throughout Ireland.

BERTIE AHERN ON STREETVIEW?
During the week the news emerged that Bertie Ahern, the former Taoiseach, might have been caught by Google’s Streetview. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0121/ahernb_streetview.html Going by the circumference of the person on the picture, I would guess that it is not him, but who knows. ….and many would say “Who cares?” after his performance in recent months. When, this week, he finally left the Dail forever, it seems he just put another nail in his reputation. A variety of radio and newspaper commentators were very explicit in their astonishment about Bertie Ahern’s embarrassing statements yesterday. Fresh from the Irish pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, Chinese Voices, Dublin Lives is an exhibition featuring a set of five 5 minute videos presented on the lives of the Chinese Community in Dublin. Four of the films are narrated by Chinese people or people of Chinese-Irish descent who are working, studying and living in Dublin. TEMPLE BAR FOOD MARKET HAS MOVED
The Temple Bar Food Market has moved and will be in the new, slightly scattered locations until June: Due to the long construction process of the umbrella project, an umbrella type retractable roof for Meeting House Square (Pictures are here: blog.templebar.ie/?p=821), the Temple Bar Food Market will have to leave Meeting House Square until June. Instead the market will now take place at three new locations around Temple Bar. The new locations are ‘Up-Town’ Old City, ‘Mid-Town’ East Essex Street and ‘Down-Town’ Curved Street which you can see on the map at blog.templebar.ie/?p=1859 . ‘Up-Town’ will offer a diverse range of fresh fruit and vegetables, ‘Mid-Town’ will be filled with stalls offering fresh hot food and ‘Down-Town’ will offer a range of stalls trading fresh Irish meats and freshly baked breads. The Temple Bar Designer Mart in Cow’s Lane will be on holidays until 12 March.

VISCERAL – EXHIBITION – SCIENCE GALLERY
28 Jan-25 Feb: Science Gallery, Naughton Institute, Trinity College, Pearse Street, D2
A new exhibition has opened in the brilliant Science Gallery in TCD. The title is “Visceral – The Living Art Experiment” and the artwork falls in the unusual area of “bio art”, which is art made of living things like living tissue, blood cells and other biotechnology-related life forms. It is a fascinating theme and while maybe not stomachable for everybody, it will be a unique experience for most. TEMPLE BAR TRADFEST
26-30 Jan: Temple Bar
From 26-30 Jan the cobbled streets of Temple Bar will play host to Ireland’s premier celebration of Irish Music and Culture. Make sure you don’t miss it and bring the while family on Saturday and Sunday. This will be TradFest’s sixth year and is set to be the biggest and best yet. Concerts, pub trails, parades, marching pipe bands, a playground, film screenings, street performers, a restaurant trail, free street entertainment and much more are part of the festival. DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES – UPDATE
I reported about the end of the Dub Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures here in the “This is odd” section and since there are a good few odd things surrounding the (sparse amount of) new developments, I will report about it here again.
A big THANKS to the people that contacted me to offer their help in setting up a small, but beautiful World Culture Festival in 2011. I mentioned that I am tempted to think about organising something like that and about 15 people either sent supportive mails or offered to help! Thanks!
I thought about it and discussed it with friends and kept a close eye on the developments in Dun Laoghaire and taking all this into account, I have decided that I better focus on TELLING you about all that will take place instead of getting more involved ….at least for the moment. :-)
After more and more people heard about the sad end of the festival (I don’t believe that it will be back in 2012!), many expressed their shock and others saw opportunities. A politician of the Green party in Dun Laoghaire started a “Save the Festival of World Cultures” petition and facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Save-the-Festival-of-World-Cultures/120699541336407?v=wall), but with just about 1100 signatures and about 1300 friends on Facebook, this campaign doesn’t seem to go far. And then some political groups even further left are getting involved and want to organise a “People’s Festival, not a private substitute”. One group seems to be heavily supporting the United Left Alliance and oddly that group doesn’t seem to like the “Save the Festival” petition and vice versa. So it all got very political and the dislike of the “private substitute” makes me wonder if they saw the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture as a capitalistic event or some strange stuff like that.
A politisation of the World Cultures Festival just seems wrong to me and it is a pity that these are the only groups that are prepared to get involved. – On the other hand, I rather have a free music festival that brings some fun, than none. :-) So, if I can make it, I will go to the public talk “Save our Festival”, organised by a Daryl Southern and the “Dun Laoghaire Community Activists”. It will take place on Sun 06 Feb from 14:30-17:30 in the Kingston Hotel in Adelaide Rd (at the Seafront and opposite the pier). www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123424021061059 Unfortunately the “Dun Laoghaire Community Activists” had nothing better to say than: “Time to tell DLRCoCo (Dun Laoghaire County Council) that it is the PEOPLES Festival of World Cultures – Not theirs…..and now we want it Back!!” I hope the meeting will be more inspired! :-O The festival was never political, nor was it NOT a festival for the people, so where is the class-struggle nonsense coming from?
