Hi all!
The life post-Christmas is back to “normality”, whatever “normality” is! ;-) For me it is lots of plans and ideas and exciting opportunities and I hope it is the same for you. :-) My slight problem is, though, that 24 hours per day are just not enough to do everything I would love to do and achieve. Do you have a similar challenge? My guess is that most of you do know what I am talking about because if you were the “easily bored” type, you would NOT read an Event Guide full of free events! ;-) But maybe you know a few people that could do with some help to find something to do? Tell them about this newsletter!
This week I am particularly looking for help from students from TCD, UCD, DCU, DIT, ITT and any of the other colleges. If you study (or work) at one of the colleges in Dublin, please read on! I need help in spreading the word about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” among the student population. You know your university/college and where you can reach a lot of people. Would you be prepared to print a few of these www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf and hang them in appropriate places in your university/college? All your help is appreciated!
[ad]
And if you are not a student, then you can still use these flyers/posters www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
and let all your work colleagues or fellow gym members know. To subscribe they simply can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG they now can subscribe as well on the Facebook Page (go to the “Join Email List” Tab).
We now are more than 3200 people that LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Have you joined? You will get last minute updates and event reminders there.

For today’s Feel Good Slot I have chosen a short video clip in which Brian Tracy talks about confidence and gives a number of tips how to achieve self-confidence or how to stay confident. I came across this clip when I searched for Brian Tracy’s work. I know some of his many books, he is one of the best known personal development experts, but wanted to see him talk. Brian Tracy will be in Dublin at the end of February and I plan to go to his (non-free) day-long seminar called “7 Steps to Building a High Profit Business”. The video clip about self-confidence is here www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1GfgMhZipM and if you want to find out more about the seminar on 27 Feb, check the advertisement here:

This week only Stephen Q. was so nice to help cover the cost for the Event Guide. Thanks a lot! Let’s hope that next week a few more will assist keeping the Event Guide going. :-) You can spend as much as you can/want on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and you can even set-up a yearly recurring donation of EUR 12, similar to a magazine subscription.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Taxback.com is offering a free 4 year tax refund assessment to all Dublin Event Guide Subscribers. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below you could be looking at a nice lump sum from the Revenue Commissioners: Did you…
…work part-time or full-time? …pay your GP or dentist? …rent property in the last 4 years? …pay tuition fees? …pay bin charges? …been on maternity leave?

This week, I will be part of teaching 65 people how to defend themselves should they get in difficulty at a 2-day course with www.kravmagaireland.com In addition I will go to a (non-free) Gospel Concert in Tallaght on Saturday evening and then later to two parties. But in the afternoon, I will try to spend at least a little time in Temple Bar to see what is happening for the Tradfest. And if I had time I would definitely go to the Rip Tide Movement Gig in Lucan.
On Sunday there is more training, but if I could, I would go to the Dublin Flea Market (Apologies that I wrongly listed it last week! My mistake!) and in the evening the Mob Fandango gig and the Santoria gig would be on my must-go list.
On Tuesday the Storymap launch sounds good, but we have a gig with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir where I need to be. On Thursday the BTW Meetup is on my list, but I might be away next weekend and then I will have to start writing the Event Guide early. Busy as always. LOL

ST PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
The programme of the St. Patrick’s Day Festival has been launched and is available on
www.stpatricksdayfestival.ie This year the festival weekend starts with the St. Patrick’s Day on 17 March and continues until 20 March. The programme is similar to last year’s which is good. So the festival parade, the Fun Fairs, a Treasure Hunt and the brilliant Big Day Out will take place again. In addition there will be the Gannon Cup Boat Race on St. Patrick’s Day this year and a (non-free) cultural evening in the Concention Centre will take place. Good news: The Ceili at Stephen’s Green will be back, however it will take place on 18 March, not on St. Patrick’s Day after the parade as until last year. The big disappointment AGAIN is that the Skyfest, the big fireworks, will probably again take place somewhere far away from where most people are. The location hasn’t been announced yet, but it seems that the sponsor (National Lottery) doesn’t like the 1.5 mio people in Dublin, but prefers to go to the small towns throughout Ireland.
BERTIE AHERN ON STREETVIEW?
During the week the news emerged that Bertie Ahern, the former Taoiseach, might have been caught by Google’s Streetview. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0121/ahernb_streetview.html Going by the circumference of the person on the picture, I would guess that it is not him, but who knows. ….and many would say “Who cares?” after his performance in recent months. When, this week, he finally left the Dail forever, it seems he just put another nail in his reputation. A variety of radio and newspaper commentators were very explicit in their astonishment about Bertie Ahern’s embarrassing statements yesterday. He was asked about his biggest regret and he said that he regretted most that the crazily expensive stadium that he wanted to have built (the Bertie Bowl) was never built. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0127/fiannafail.html

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?

Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086 or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. GOOD NEWS SECTION?
Thanks for the Good News mails last week. I didn’t get a huge amount of mails, but not the quantity is relevant! It is the quality! :-) Helen Q told me about a website that only contains optimistic messages about the economy. econ-optimist.blogspot.com/ Let’s hope that all these announced jobs will become real jobs.
Alicia P told me that the Aran Islands are to be a test environment for electric cars (www.rte.ie/news/2011/0114/electric_car.html). And Xen Ch. checked the Chinese Horoscope to see what they have to say about the world economy in 2011 since we are approaching the new Chinese Lunar New Year on 03 Feb. The new year will be the year of the Rabbit and Xen told me that it has been predicted that the World will be out of Recession, Middle East will be calm & politicians will be focusing more on domestic polices: www.myqualities.com/forecasts/world-forecast-2011.asp
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
KINDERMUSIK – MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
Anita Thomas, a friend and supporter of this Event Guide has a young daughter and was keen to teach her daughter music in a fun, but at the same time educational way. In her search for a suitable way to teach, she came across “Kindermusik”, which is the world leader in music and movement programmes for babies, toddlers, young children and their parents, reaching millions of families all over the world. Anita realised that there was a gap in Ireland because the classes weren’t available, so she decided to take various courses and qualified as a Kindermusik educator. The innovative Kindermusik music and movement programme nurtures the cognitive, emotional, language, social, physical and musical development of children, and involves families in the joy of their children’s musical learning experience and if that sounds interesting to you then you have the opportunity to come with your child to a Demo Class in the coming week. The first “Kindermusik ABC Music & Me – Demo Class” will take place in Taney Church – Dundrum on Thurs 03 Feb from 15:00-16:00 and on Sat 05 Feb from 11:00-12:00. Ring 083-3612570 or 01-4427762 to book your place and check here to find out more www.facebook.com/pages/Kindermusik-with-Anita-Thomas/171572422858338?v=wall
More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

A new exhibition has opened in the brilliant Science Gallery in TCD. It is a fascinating theme and while maybe not stomachable for everybody, it will be a unique experience for most. The exhibits are described in this brochure www.sciencegallery.com/files/VISCERAL_THE%20LIVING%20ART%20EXPERIMENT.pdf but it won’t beat seeing the exhibition in reality. You have from 28 Jan until 25 Feb and the opening times are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00 (closed on Mondays). Admission is free (with a suggested donation of EUR5) and the exhibition is suitable over the age of 15..

Sun 30 Jan: 11:00-17:00, Dublin Food Co-op, Newmarket Square, (Off Cork Street), Dublin 8. Stalls with hand-made goods, art, jewellery, furniture, records, vintage clothing, bric-a-brac and lots more unwanted items that may just be what you always were looking for. Admission is free. www.dublinflea.ie/
Apologies for listing this event already last week! I checked the Food Co-op website last week and since the week before the Brocante Furniture Market took place in the Food Co-op, I took it that the Flea Market would be next. But I didn’t think! The trick is that the Brocante Market is on the 3rd Sunday and the Flea Market is on the last Sunday. Because this month has 5 (!!) Sundays, I wrongly announced the flea market for last week! I am very sorry!

DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES – UPDATE
I reported about the end of the Dub Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures here in the “This is odd” section and since there are a good few odd things surrounding the (sparse amount of) new developments, I will report about it here again.
A big THANKS to the people that contacted me to offer their help in setting up a small, but beautiful World Culture Festival in 2011. I mentioned that I am tempted to think about organising something like that and about 15 people either sent supportive mails or offered to help! Thanks!
I thought about it and discussed it with friends and kept a close eye on the developments in Dun Laoghaire and taking all this into account, I have decided that I better focus on TELLING you about all that will take place instead of getting more involved ….at least for the moment. :-)
After more and more people heard about the sad end of the festival (I don’t believe that it will be back in 2012!), many expressed their shock and others saw opportunities. A politician of the Green party in Dun Laoghaire started a “Save the Festival of World Cultures” petition and facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Save-the-Festival-of-World-Cultures/120699541336407?v=wall), but with just about 1100 signatures and about 1300 friends on Facebook, this campaign doesn’t seem to go far. And then some political groups even further left are getting involved and want to organise a “People’s Festival, not a private substitute”. One group seems to be heavily supporting the United Left Alliance and oddly that group doesn’t seem to like the “Save the Festival” petition and vice versa. So it all got very political and the dislike of the “private substitute” makes me wonder if they saw the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture as a capitalistic event or some strange stuff like that.
A politisation of the World Cultures Festival just seems wrong to me and it is a pity that these are the only groups that are prepared to get involved. – On the other hand, I rather have a free music festival that brings some fun, than none. :-) So, if I can make it, I will go to the public talk “Save our Festival”, organised by a Daryl Southern and the “Dun Laoghaire Community Activists”. It will take place on Sun 06 Feb from 14:30-17:30 in the Kingston Hotel in Adelaide Rd (at the Seafront and opposite the pier). www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123424021061059 Unfortunately the “Dun Laoghaire Community Activists” had nothing better to say than: “Time to tell DLRCoCo (Dun Laoghaire County Council) that it is the PEOPLES Festival of World Cultures – Not theirs…..and now we want it Back!!” I hope the meeting will be more inspired! :-O The festival was never political, nor was it NOT a festival for the people, so where is the class-struggle nonsense coming from? The new independent festival is planned to be this: www.facebook.com/pages/The-Peoples-Festival/117831271623016

The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
