Hi all!

Did you enjoy Culture Night last week? I had a brilliant 4+ hours of events, discovered some news things and in the end agreed with many people who said that we should have more Culture Night than just on one single evening.

On Wednesday evening I was at the launch event of the Dublin Theatre Festival and my guess is that a good few of you were there as well. It was a ticketed but free event and because there was a trick to successfully requesting free tickets, the Event Guide Community had a significant head start on others, so I’d say there could have been a few hundred Event Guide readers at the show on in the Gaiety. :-) The show was called “Circa” and it was absolutely impressive and breath-taking acrobatics and dance. There are more (non-free) performances of the same show during the Theatre Festival (EUR 20-35) and if you had planned to go to a really good event anyway, consider Circa, it is really really good! Last night I was in Castleknock with Patrick Cumiskey of www.kravmagaireland.com, where we started another Self-Defence Course for Beginners. This week is the busiest ever. We have started a new 12 week course in Blackrock on Monday, a new 12 week course last night in Castleknock and there will be a 2-day course this coming weekend in the City Center. More than 100 new Krav Maga students in one week!! Patrick Cumiskey (www.kravmagaireland.com) is the main sponsor of this Event Guide and his sponsorship is absolutely crucial. Oh and if you are interested in learning how to defend yourself in case you ever encounter a tricky or dangerous situation, you know where to go. And finally I have to tell you about an upcoming event that I will organise and to which you are invited. I promised it some time ago and on Sat 16 October it will now happen. On that day I will run a full day seminar entitled “Wealth Creation Mindset”, it will teach you how to identify and change the limiting factors that stop you from achieving your financial goals. The seminar will run from 09:30-17:30 and will be full of new learnings. It will take place in the D4 Hotels in Ballsbridge and if you want to be part of it, you will have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SEMINAR. There are only 40 places and you HAVE to register with me if you want to join us on the day. The seminar is donation based, that means YOU decide how much it is worth to you and donate some money accordingly at the end of the seminar. Only because I am convinced that you will walk away with LOTS of new insights, I am doing that. :-) You will get a separate mail from me about it during the week, watch out for that, but don’t wait with your registration until then if you are interested. ;-)

This weekend I will go to the Oktoberfest at the IFSC at some point and in addition we have another Krav Maga (Self-Defence) beginners course on Saturday and Sunday (www.kravmagaireland.com) where I will be at least for part of the time. On Sat or Sun, I will probably go to the Ranelagh Arts Festival, to see what they are doing and maybe I will even catch a glimpse of the Fashion Event in the City Centre on Sat or Sun.
On Sunday the “Saucy Sunday” and the Wood Guthrie Day event sounds good, but I doubt that I will be able to make it and on Monday I would – if I could – go to the Panty Bar Comedy Night. On Tuesday the Green Drinks is an event I will TRY (again!) to go to and from Thursday the Open House and the Hard Working Class Heroes are two completely different events that will definitely get my attention.

WRITING TRAIN CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

GOOGLE STREET VIEW IS LIVE
Google Street View for Dublin is live and while some people are always concerned about the private information this could reveal (I guess it is a serious issue if someone can see the colour of your front door, isn’t it?) others had their cheeky fun when the cameras took the pictures (bit.ly/thecheek) and in general I think it is a useful tool. I have some trouble understanding the controls of it, but I hope I will learn it. ;-)

CAFÉ BAR DELI CLOSED
The disappearance of restaurants and pubs seems to continue. The latest company in difficulties seems to be Café Bar Deli, the popular restaurant chain that had restaurants in Ranelagh, Sth Great George’s Street and for some time in Bewley’s Café in Grafton Street. The Ranelagh branch closed at the end of August (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0831/1224277911025.html) and the George’s Street site is currently closed “for renovation”, but many people are wondering if it might stay closed for good. The restaurant in Bewley’s closed quite some time ago when the owner of the building tried to increase the rent significantly. Café Bar Deli’s prices were relatively reasonable before a more recent change in menu and the food was usually good, so it’s a pity that they are gone. In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! ROBERT MALLET EXHIBITION – DIAS
History might not make you quake but
Dublin born Robert Mallet (1810 -1881) is considered by many as the father of seismology (study of earthquakes) and DIAS (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies) are celebrating the bicentenary of Robert Mallet with an exhibition in the Library, School of Cosmic Physics, 5 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. CAOIMHGHIN O CROIDHEAIN – PEARSE CENTRE
Vincent Browne, journalist and broadcaster, will open an exhibition by Caoimhghin Ó Croidheáin, entitled “Making Cents: Life Below the Bottom Rung” at 18:30 on Thurs 07 Oct in the Pearse Centre, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2. The show is open on weekdays in the afternoon until 14 Oct. ‘Making Cents’ is a new series of oil paintings examining the daily existence of people making a living in the worst working conditions in the global economy.

DESCRIBING ARCHITECTURE – ORMOND BUILDING
The Architectural Association of Ireland is presenting an exhibition of works by architects, during Open House Dublin 2010 from 07-10 Oct in Ormond Building, Ormond Quay Upper. The Describing Architecture exhibition will explore the various forms of representation used to describe buildings – in the design process, during construction or after completion. Sketches, drawings, models, photographs, paintings, collages and video will be displayed to describe completed buildings, unfinished projects and theoretical schemes.
The exhibition will be held at the Daylight Gallery, a temporary new space, at The Ormond Building, Ormond Quay Upper, Dublin 7, across the river from Dublin City Council Civic Offices.

DUBLIN FESTIVAL OF FASHION – CITY CENTRE
Fashion and beauty retailers in the Grafton Street and Henry Street area are getting together to offer a mix of special offers, live fashion events and in-store activities for the Dublin Fashion Festival from Fri 01 Oct – Sun 03 Oct. Over the Festival weekend, retailers will parade season’s trends on Dublin’s first ever outdoor catwalks. Both Grafton St. and Henry St. will host a number of fashion shows, exhibiting emerging Autumn collections from a variety of Dublin retailers. CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL 2010
The Children’s Book Festival 2010 will run from 01-31 Oct all over Ireland. Marking its twentieth consecutive year, this October’s Children’s Books Festival is encouraging young people across Ireland to Make Friends With Reading, with hundreds of exciting book-themed events and activities taking place nationwide. The fun kicks off on Fri 01 Oct, with 50+ authors and illustrators due to visit libraries, schools and arts centres throughout the land over the course of the month. Other activities include storytelling sessions, printmaking workshops, quizzes and competitions and many more, ensuring there will be countless opportunities to strike-up new friendships with books of all styles and genres.
This year’s programme will see a particularly strong focus on illustration and comic books, with artists Bruce Ingman (Boing!, When Martha’s Away, The Pencil), Niamh Sharkey (I’m a Happy Hugglewug, The Ravenous Beast), Sarah McIntyre (Vern and Lettuce, Morris the Mankiest Monster) and Gary Northfield (Derek the Sheep, The Beano), sharing their skills in a special series of creative workshops.

TWO OKTOBERFESTS IN DUBLIN
It is confusing for some, so let me help: This year there are TWO Oktoberfest events in Dublin.
On Fri 01 and Sat 02 Oct the Paulaner Oktoberfest will take place. This is an event by the beer company “Paulaner” to celebrate their 200th anniversary. The celebration is not in a central location, instead a number of pubs have bands etc. The pubs that participate are The Brazen Head, Bruxelles Bar, The Bull & Castle, Cill Airne, The Church, Dakota, The Foggy Dew, Hogan’s Bar, Lagoona, The Living Room, The Odeon, Pygmallion and The Temple Bar. The “proper” Oktoberfest is the event that is happening in George’s Dock at the IFSC, where a Mini-Oktoberfest with Beer Tent, Bavarian Music and German food and beer is taking place from 30 Sept-10 Oct. For more details see the event notice below.

DUBLIN OKTOBERFEST
The central Oktoberfest in Dublin is actually the “Erdinger Oktoberfest”, with Erdinger being a competitor to Paulaner. I have to admit that I prefer the centralised Fest, because if every pub does its own thing, it is not really a Fest. So, to enjoy the proper Oktoberfest, you have to come to George’s Dock in the IFSC, where from 30 Sept-10 Oct the Oktoberfest will take place. You will get to drink German Beer, listen to German Music (Cough…cough!) and eat German food, like pigs trotters and Bratwurst and Fleischkaese (fine meatloaf), etc. The prices are obviously a bit higher than in Germany, but you expected that anyway. ;-) Opening Hours are Mon-Sat 12:00-00:30 and Sun 12:00-20:00.
There are some odd things about the Oktoberfest that you should know: Last year the number of people that was allowed on the platform IN George’s Dock was tiny and the queue of people that wanted to get in was massive, so if you want to come, make sure that you go early and that your friends won’t come too late either. Another odd thing is this statement on the website of the Oktoberfest: “In order to comply with Irish licensing laws, every person who is present at the Oktoberfest after 10pm is required to purchase a food voucher to the value of €5. The €5 voucher is redeemable against a substantial meal which is worth €10.”
I would love to know what part of the licensing law they refer to, because the “rice and chicken” days that once were an odd feature of Irish Discos are long over. In these days you had to be given some food in a Disco, so at around 23:00 tables were put on the dance floor and everyone good a plate with a portion of rice and some chicken with sauce. You quickly ate and then the table were removed and the music and dancing continued. VERY odd experience. :-)
Last year this Oktoberfest “clause” was enforced for people entering George’s Dock after 22:00, but people that were there already seemingly didn’t have to pay and it wouldn’t make sense if they had to pay! oktoberfest-dublin.com/

* James Sheeran (Acoustic/Rock/Trad) is playing from 18:00 in Peadar Kearney’s in 64 Dame Street, Dublin 2. And The Eastern Harps (Trad) are playing there from 20:00. Admission is free.

RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL
Starting on Fri 24 Sept with the Culture Night, the Ranelagh Arts Festival will continue until 03 October. It is a long festival in comparison to others, but the events are just more spread out. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

WOODY GUTHRIE DAY – DUBLIN
“Love Music Hate Racism” present “Woody Guthrie Day” on Sun 03 Oct. It is the 43rd anniversary of the death of American folk hero Woody Guthrie. The day will begin with the screening of the Billy Bragg narrated documentary ‘Woody Guthrie: This Machine Kills Fascists’ and will end with a celebration of his music and music he influenced later that evening.
Woody Guthrie travelled the country from Oklahoma to California during the Depression of the 1930’s with thousands of other migrants looking for work. Many of his songs are concerned with the conditions faced by these working class people and inspired many of the great songwriters that came after him including Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs. During his time he played at countless labour strikes, union meetings, migrant camps and Communist Hollywood parties with actor, Will Geer, and wrote for Communist papers The Light and People’s World. On 3rd October 1967 Guthrie died from complications connected to Huntington’s disease, a progressive genetic neurological disorder.
LMHR will be donating all proceeds from the gigs to the Huntington’s Associations of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

On Tues 05 Oct, Green Drinks will take a look at cycling as a form of sustainable transport as well as the idea of bicycle recycling.
In the UK, 4 million new bicycles are purchased every year. Unfortunately that “out with the old, in with the new” mentality means more and more discarded bicycles are appearing in landfills around the world. Cycling is similarly on the rise in Ireland, due to schemes such as the Dublin Bikes and Bike to Work, which is undoubtedly a positive development yet even the keenest cyclist can be more eco-friendly. Rothar is a non-for-profit organization that seeks to address these issues by promoting bicycle recycling as a method of reducing waste and encouraging responsible bicycle ownership. By repairing unwanted bikes and selling refurbished parts, the company challenges the throw away mentality of industrialized society. The founder of Rothar, Anne Bedos, will be on hand at Green Drinks to offer an insight into the concept of bicycle recycling and the positive effects it can have on the environment as well as the local community.

The weekly UCD Earth Sciences Institute lecture took a break in July and August and is back now. ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS – ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY
The Public Seminar “Revealing the Past: Archaeological Excavations in Ireland” is taking place on Fri 08 Oct at 10:00 in the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson Street. Since 1970 the Academy Committee for Archaeology has managed an annual fund provided by the National Monuments Service, which has financed over ninety excavations in Ireland. This is the only fund in Ireland for independent research excavation and has enabled scholars to make a substantial contribution to our knowledge of the past. This public seminar aims to showcase to a wide audience, the results of several recently funded excavations, with a particular emphasis on investigating key issues in prehistoric Ireland, as well as church sites, religious foundations and burial practice. OPEN HOUSE
With more than 150 events Open House Dublin is Ireland’s biggest architecture festival, allowing us to explore the architecture of our city. Dublin buildings of all types and periods will open up their doors, with special tours by hundreds of professionals and enthusiasts, completely for free. This event is definitely for you if you are interested in the buildings around you, but you don’t have to be a fan of architecture to enjoy it. Rare opportunities to visit buildings that are normally not accessible are the reason for the fascination of this event. Over the last two years I visited Liberty Hall, Busaras, Customs House, Department of Foreign Affairs and a few other buildings that you normally would NOT be able to get into. Many of you might find the Busaras boring or ugly, but once you have done the tour and have heard what the thinking and idea behind the building was, you will suddenly see buildings around us in a completely different light. Some buildings are so popular that tours are ticketed, but at most buildings you can just arrive on the day. Open House starts on Thursday 07 Oct and continues until Sun 10 Oct with Sat+Sun being the main days. In many venues (e.g. Tourist Office) around Dublin you can get an Open House booklet for free and if you can get it, it is worth bringing it.

DYING OF PATRICK IRELAND – FILM SCREENING – IFI
The Film Screening of “The Dying of Patrick Ireland” will take place on Fri 08 Oct at 19:00 in the Irish Film Insitute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. The film documents the symbolic burial of Patrick Ireland, the alter ego of the distinguished Irish artist Brian O’Doherty. The Dying of Patrick Ireland screening coincides with the gift to the Irish Museum of Modern Art by Brian O’Doherty and his wife art historian Barbara Novak of more than 70 artworks from their own collection.

IRELAND: LITTLE BIG COUNTRY??
I think we all agree that Ireland is a small country. With just 4.5 mio inhabitants, it is perfectly shaped ;-) but certainly not large. And in addition to being small, it is not the most affluent country either at least in the current state. But it seems that our politicians have a completely different opinion of themselves and of this country. It seems that they think they are a LOT more important than the politicians in other countries and one perfect proof for that is the salary of the Taoiseach (the Irish Prime Minister, in case you are new in Ireland!). The Irish Mail on Sunday wrote that Brian Cowern is the fourth-highest-paid world leader. Converted into US Dollar Cowen gets $342,400. No 1 is Lee Hsien Loong from Singapore, who gets $2.75m, then Donald Tsang of Hong Kong with $515.300 and then Barack Obama with $400,000. Incredible that the political leader of Ireland is fourth in the list.
Initially I thought, that it is not just the current party that should be blamed for it, but maybe the Irish political system or all politicians, but then I found out that when Fianny Fail (the current government party) came to power, the Taoiseach’s salary was EUR 133,000 and this was increased to EUR 252,000 since 1997. A 89% increase is impressive, isn’t it? Can I please have that percentage increase? It is either pure luck or the right mindset ;-) that you are getting an Event Guide today! Last night disaster struck and the hard disk of my Laptop developed Bad Blocks, the Laptop crashed and “Blue Screened” on me.
