Hi all!
We are currently in the core holiday period in Ireland and you definitely see it in the number of events. When I came to Ireland many years ago, many companies closed down in the first two weeks of August. Construction companies still do the “builder holidays”, but luckily other companies (I worked at the time in an IT company) realised that the world doesn’t stop for two weeks in the beginning of August. I say “luckily” because enforced holidays take all flexibility and individual preferences away and force you to go on holidays exactly during the time when everybody else goes, which then is obviously the most expensive time to go.
Either intentionally or unintentionally, however, it seems that most event organisers still leave a gap in these two weeks. There are no big event highlights and the number of events is in general a lot smaller than at other times. I feel the difference writing the Event Guide, but let’s face it, most of us will not suffer any serious damage from having two or so quieter weeks. :-) It will all back to normal soon and the quieter time might give you an opportunity to refocus on things (hobbies, projects, interests) that you had neglected for a while. ;-) The world keeps turning and there ARE still events taking place for you to enjoy. :-)

EVENT GUIDE LOGO NEEDED!! – APPEAL TO GRAPHIC DESIGNERS
Today I am looking for help and support from some of you and I hope that someone will be able to help me: The “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is around for more than three years now and the name – while not the most exciting name – happened by coincidence and kind of stuck. For a while I thought about renaming this newsletter, but lately I am not too pushed anymore. (If you feel strongly in favour for or against the current name, please let me know!) Now, if the name stays then it would be about time to do something about the branding and part of the branding of a “product” is a logo or something similar that people recognise. So, today I am looking for help with a logo for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. If you are a Graphic Designer OR if you just have an idea for a logo, you are invited and encouraged to contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and to send me your ideas or suggestions. It can be a rough outline or a detailed and worked out drawing. I currently have no specific expectations so you brief is very open. I know that work like that is normally not done for free and while I wish I had the money to pay you for your work, the fact that writing the Event Guide is a hobby and doesn’t make me money limits my options here. But I will reward the person that will come out as a “winner” in this process. The person that provides the winning logo will get TWO books from me, a pair of tickets for an interesting event AND will be mentioned by name and with your website for at least one year as a supporter of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”.
Every week between 30 and 70 new people join our Dublin Event Guide Community, which is great. Most of the new subscribers have heard from friends about this newsletter and – obviously ;-) – will eternally grateful to their friends who introduced them to this valuable resource of information. Do you too want to be admired and appreciated for helping your friends? Let them know about this newsletter and suggest to them to subscribe by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. This will help your efforts:

This weeks Feel Good Slot brings you a video with key quotes from Napoleon Hill. Napoleon Hill wrote one of the most important books about personal development and I recommend it to everyone. The book is called “Think and Grow Rich” and nearly all concepts of self-development and improvement that are taught today are based on Napoleon Hill’s ideas. Have a look at a few of his key quotes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w30ZlGiZRIo
Last week I mentioned in just 5 lines that I will run a day-long seminar on Wealth Creation Mindset (probably on Sat 16 Oct) and many of you already registered your interest. Thanks for this and for confirming to me that this is something most of you would benefit from. It is still a long time to October and I will tell you more details closer to the date, but if you are interested and want to be kept informed, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject MINDSET.

This week Sarah Ann H, Ailis F. and Fiona M. donated to support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their contribution is hugely appreciated. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile ;-), you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)
You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

FAILTE IRELAND DUBLIN HORSE SHOW – RDS

Tickets are available from www.dublinhorseshow.com or via 0818 719 300.
The organisers made one pair of adult tickets and one Family Pass available and the interest was HUGE. I got hundreds of mails and out of a BIG hat the winners Ming-jia Yan and Carolyn McQueston were drawn. Congrats! Enjoy the event!. www.dublinhorseshow.com
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
ULSTER BANK DUBLIN THEATRE FESTIVAL – SPONSORSHIP
The Dublin Theatre Festival will take place from 30 September and was launched last week. Ulster Bank is the sponsor of the Theatre Festival and I have to say, they are a brilliant sponsor! I know the banks in Ireland don’t deserve too much praise for some aspects of their work, but as sponsors there are two banks that stand out: The AIB is sponsoring the completely free Street Performance Festival every year and the Ulster Bank is sponsoring the Theatre Festival and has promised to make 1000 tickets for a performance in the Gaiety Theatre available for free. (You will soon (not yet!) be able to request the tickets on www.ulsterbank.com/arts ).
This deserves praise that companies like Carlsberg (Comedy Festival) or Bank of Ireland (Rugby and Gold) do not deserve in the same way. You wonder why Guinness is not mentioned in either list? Well the Guinness sponsorship of sports events doesn’t create any free events and the Arthur’s Day gigs that are sponsored by Guinness do make reduced ticket prices available, but I still would prefer one big ticketed but free-for-everybody event, for example in Phoenix Park.
In all fairness, however, I should mention that I am fully aware that it is the purpose of all these companies to make money and not to give money away. Sponsorship is a form of advertisement and it can be used in many different ways. As an expert ;-) on free events, I obviously am more in favour of sponsors that make something available for free. So, I guess, I am unfairly biased. ;-)
YOU & YOUR MONEY CEASES PRINT PUBLICATION
With an extremely euphemistic press release (www.irishpressreleases.ie/2010/07/30/you-your-money-goes-online/) Ashville Media have announced that “Ireland’s only personal finance magazine, You & Your Money is moving entirely online.” This means nothing else than that the attempt of selling a printed magazine failed and now all that is left over is to put the magazine online. The announcement was made on 30 July, but oddly the website hasn’t been told about this and still has a category where you can subscribe to the printed publication. The magazine was mainly known because Eddie Hobbs was the anchor writer and according to the press release that will stay the same. Access to the online magazine at www.youandyourmoney.ie will be free and for formerly printed magazines, this is often the precursor to the death of the publication.
SAND SCULPTURES BACK IN DUBLIN
I got two calls during the week about the sand sculptures in Dublin Castle, so here it goes once again: Duthain Dealbh (Fleeting Sculpture) have carved/built their sand sculptures in Dublin Castle’s Upper courtyard and they will now be on public display until 29 August. This year, the theme is “Vikings” as a complement to the Dublin Viking Festival. You can visit the sculptures while the Dublin Castle courtyard is accessible and the front gates typically close at 18:00, the Ship Street Gates close at 19:30. www.duthain-dealbh.com or www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001217556672
DUBLIN LIBRARIES – EVENT PROGRAMME
The Dublin Libraries do a brilliant job in running events, exhibitions, concert and even language exchanges (practise sessions). Often I include some of their events, but there are tooooo many to list them all, so to make sure that you get a chance to check all events out, you should go to this website at least once a month a the beginning og the month: www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/all_events.aspx
NATIONAL MUSEUM EVENTS
I was determined to include the National Museum Events this week again, but am slightly dismayed by the fact that less and less events seem to be free. If that continues, I might not spend the time anymore to transcribe the National Museum Events but only point you in the direction of their (good) event listing: www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx
OUTDOOR MOVIES – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
Unfortunately I realised it too late some weeks ago that the pre-order period for tickets for this year’s movie screenings at Farmleigh House had already come to an end. So all I can do for you this year is to tell you about the event so that you can watch out for it next year in case I forget again.
For the last few years Farmleigh House is the venue of four movie screenings over two days. Last year it was “drive-in movies” that attracted the crowds, something of a novelty in Dublin, this year it is less unique outdoor screenings of films in the courtyard of Farmleigh House. No tickets are left for this year, but next year I will try to tell you earlier and if you want to check yourself you can always keep an eye on www.farmleigh.ie
FEMALE SOUL BAND LOOKING FOR MEMBERS
Ari, a friend, musician and Event Guide supporter runs an all-female Soul Cover Band. The band is well established and has gigs booked in September and October, but some band members unfortunately have to leave and more members are needed, so the band is looking for an experienced keyboards, guitar, trumpet and sax player. If you are female, like soul and play any of these instruments well, contact Kate on 087-9044893 or Ari on 086-3973528.
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
KIRSTY O’KEEFFE – THE JOINERY
“Something Else to Do But Hang Around in Suburbia” by Kirsty O’Keeffe is a series of images based on the lives of the people who live in Ireland’s suburban areas.
“It challenges the stereotypes and presumed homogeneity associated with suburban life, exploring notions of dysfunction, discord, and the bizarre, looking at the way our lives are performed, and our acceptance or rejection of the various roles society tends to place upon us. Each photograph presents its subject as a character or an actor in their own lives, bringing the private into the public – ‘airing one’s dirty laundry’ so to speak.” The exhibition will be on show from 04-09 Aug from 12:00-18:00 at The Joinery, Arbour Hill, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. www.thejoinery.org

BIORHYTHM: MUSIC AND THE BODY – SCIENCE GALLERY
Because this week is not the busiest, remember that there are great long-term events. From 02 July until 01 October, the Science Gallery will show the new exhibition “Biorhythm: Music and the Body”. Music is a central part of the human experience, but what is the natural force that drives us to sing, strum, drum and dance? What is the scientific basis of whistling, humming and toe-tapping?
From an acoustic bed to sonic tables and experiments on your emotional response to pop music, Science Gallery’s Summer exhibition “Biorhythm” will allow you to feel how music moves your body through an interactive bazaar of unique sonic experiences, installations, experiments and performances from musicians, engineers and neuroscientists from around the world. Admission is free (with a suggested donation of EUR 5) and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. If you are a longer term reader you know that I love The Ratzingers! They are a brilliant cover band that always creates a great atmosphere and provides super music. The Ratzingers will be again in the Mint Bar in the basement of the Westin Hotel and I will be there. :-) The gig starts at 22:30. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=145170458830052&ref=mf
WHITNAIL AND I – FILM SCREENING – SUGAR CLUB
Definitely one of the “odder” events in Dublin! A film screening – that is the reason/excuse/justification for a big drinking game – is taking place on Sat 07 Aug in the Sugar Club in Leeson Street. I hadn’t heard about the film, but allegedly it is a “cult masterpiece” and while you watch the film you have to match Richard E. Grant drink for drink. He goes through about 40 during the whole film. He seems to drink 1953 Chateau Margeaux and lighter fluid, so the Sugar Club grants you that you don’t have to knock back exactly WHAT he drinks. And “because we like to promote responsible drinking you don’t have to drink the same AMOUNT that he drinks!” Phew! And I nearly thought it was just a smart trick to get people to buy LOTS of drinks! Well, maybe it is, because the description continues “But you gotta drink something!” Doors open at 23:00 and admission is free before midnight (EUR 5 after that). www.thesugarclub.com/what-is-on.html
REGULAR SATURDAY EVENTS
* Don’t forget that the Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30. The Designer Mart is on winter break and will return from 13 March!
* The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2. www.supernatural.ie
* The Point Village Market is taking place every Sat+Sun from 08:30-17:30 next to the Point Depot (a.k.a. The O2) at the final LUAS stop in the Docklands. There are more than 100 stalls every week and you can find out more here www.pointvillagemarket.ie/
* Dublin Food Co-op is open every Saturday (09:30-16:30) at Newmarket, Dublin 8 for organic wholefoods and sustainable household products, plus over a dozen producer stalls offering organic fruit and veg., baked goods, dairy produce, wines, hot and cold food, etc. Additional Co-op opening Thursdays 12:00-20:00. www.dublinfood.coop

ELECTRIC FILLING STATIONS
In 2020 a total of 10% of all cars in Ireland, that’s 250,000 cars, are expected to be electric cars. To facilitate this, the ESB plans to build 1500 charge points throughout Ireland before the end of 2011. Currently there are approx. 5 charge points in Dublin and you might have seen them. They are hip-high aluminium poles at the side of the street, which have a bright blue light at the top that is well visible in the night. Two of the 5 points are in Fitzwilliam Street (at ESB offices) and in Adelaide Road (at Department of Natural Resources offices) and if you want to charge your car there you will have to park it on a Pay&Display parking bay that costs you EUR 2.90 per hour. Allegedly it takes 6 to 8 hours to charge the car and while the electricity is currently still free (until January 2011) the parking charges makes it hugely expensive to operate an electric car. According to Dublin City laws have to be changed to accommodate electric cars.
www.tribune.ie/news/home-news/article/2010/aug/01/drivers-charging-electric-cars-face-parking-fees/ But let’s assume that law is changed and parking is free at a charging point: If it really takes 6-8 hours to charge a car we will need a HUGE amount of charging points if 10% of the cars will be electric in 10 years time. The planned 500 charge points for Dublin seems quite low. Imagine a (petrol+diesel) filling station and the amount of cars that roll through it in only 1 hour, all ready to drive 400-600km. An electric car can only drive 160km with a charge and the charging takes 6-8 hours? I think a LOT needs to be done until the 10% for 2020 can become reality!

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
