Hi all!
After the busy weekend last week and before the must-go Street Performance World Championship we will have a slightly quieter weekend to recover. ;-) But from today most football fans will look at events in Dublin as a type of disturbance anyway. ;-) At least if they take place between 12:30 and 21:00. The Football/Soccer World Cup is starting today with the Opening Ceremony this afternoon and the first match at 15:00. Matches will take place up to three times per day with the starting times of 12:30, 15:00 and 19:30. But not every day will have three matches, so just check here world-cup.irishtimes.com/?mi=3 The final match will be on 11 July, so if you hate football, you could have a long month ahead of you. I am not a big football fan and would never watch a match during the normal season. But European Championship and World Cup are different :-) so I will definitely watch a few matches if and when I have time and have to admit that I strongly support ONE of the teams ;-) You can guess which one! Lol
[ad]
If football normally is not your thing you have two options: You can get annoyed every time someone mentions football and freak out when you see it on TV at home or in pubs OR you can join me and enjoy it for one month every 2 years. ;-) The choice is yours. (If you wonder why I said every 2 years instead of every 4 years, remember that I said I watch World Cup and European Cup matches.)
With 52 weeks in the year and 3×52 being 156, I officially declare this week as the 3rd birthday of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). ;-) Good wishes (and presents) are more than welcome. ;-) For the big presents I am more than happy to give you my delivery address ;-) but if you are more for many small presents then maybe tell LOTS of your friends about the Event Guide and suggest to them that they subscribe as well.
Spread the word, let everybody know and tell them that to subscribe they only need to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. This might help you: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
And if your choice of present for the 3rd birthday of the Event Guide is a donation to support the production of this un-missable weekly newsletter ;-) then all you need to know is here www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm Be as generous as you want to be. :-P
The “Feel Good Slot” this week provides you with a very brief video. It is not overly eventful, but it contains some nice quotes about “Happiness”. Pick ONE of them and write it down on a piece of paper that you keep in front of you for the rest of the day. Read it again and again and when you go home you will most likely feel happier than any other day! Try it out, you have nothing to lose. ;-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hh-EgTOxZM
————-
This week Veronica F., Filippo G. and Eimear McG. sent me a donation and I appreciate their support hugely. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile, you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)
You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BREAKTHROUGH TO SUCCESS SEMINAR – 2.5-DAY EVENT IN DUBLIN
After the recent event in Dublin, there is now a chance that Chris Howard will be back in November with the “Breakthrough to Success” seminar which has a slightly wider appeal than the Wealth Propulsion Seminar. At Breakthrough to Success you will learn how to make sure that you achieve your goals no matter how big they are and how to get rid of all the things that hold you back. It will revolutionise your thinking! Register for free tickets here: www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324
——————————————————–
This weekend, I will definitely go to the Marlay Summer Fair on either Saturday or Sunday and will meet some friends who I haven’t met for a LONG time. In the evening I will sing at a gig in Lucan with the Valley Gospel Singers and after it, you will find me in the Mint Bar, listening to The Ratzingers.
On Sunday I will try the Ferocious Mingle Market in the Food Co-Op, will go to the Point Village Market and in the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass (it is the second last before the summer break, so if you always wanted to come to hear us sing, you better do it this week or next week).
During the week I will be busy, and there is no event that totally grabs my attention, so being otherwise busy is fine. ;-)

______Competition______________
RIP – ROCK, INDIE, POP CLUB NIGHT – TICKET COMPETITION
Daragh L. told me that he is promoting a new gay club night called “Rock Indie Pop” or RIP in short. He describes “RIP (Rock, Indie, Pop) is Dublin’s newest alternative to the mainstream gay clubs, with an eclectic mix of music, performance art, dancers and drinks promos. The venue is the Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Entry is EUR 10 (or 8 for students/unemp.) Doors open at 23.00. Find out more at www.rockindiepop.com” To promote this new event which will take place the first time on Sat 18 June in the Button Factory, Daragh has made 3 pairs of tickets available for a competition here. If you are interested in winning a pair of tickets, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with RIP in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tues 15 June.
CHARITY 90s NIGHT – TICKET COMPETITION
Laura Ryder’s charity event is taking place tonight. Laury will climb the Kilimanjaro in August she is raising money for the teenage mental health charity Headstrong and the Simon Community with it. On Fri 11 June she is inviting everybody to the Sugar Club, Leeson Street, for a 90s night with live music from “Pump Up The Jam”. The event starts at 20:00 and it is important that you are there BEFORE 23:00 because if you arrive after that time then the next act on the evening gets all the money and NOT “her” charities. Admission is EUR 10 and if you arrive before 23:00 Laura’s charities get the money AND you are still allowed to stay for the following gig which is a Brazilian night. Two gigs for the price of one! Laura’s facebook page is www.facebook.com/lollipopversuskilimanjaro and the event page is
www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125762744104854
Laura had made one pair of tickets available for a competition here and the winner was Danny Groenland. Congrats!
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
MERRION SQUARE TO BE RENAMED
Are you surprised about that? And are you similarly curious to find out what the new name might be? Well here is the real surprise: The park is currently not called “Merrion Square” (all the maps are wrong!) instead it is called “Archbishop Ryan Park”. It got this name in 1974 when Dublin City wanted to honour Archbishop Ryan for giving the park to Dublin as a gift. But apart from a sign at the entrance on the side of Fitzwilliam Street there is hardly any indication that the park has that name. The City Councillors should have realised that renaming the park but not the streets around it, which are all called “Merrion Square” (South, North, East and West) is wasted time. Until 24 April you could submit your suggestion for a new name (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2010/0423/1224268946987.html)
and it turns out that only 567 did respond. 13 wanted to keep the current (official) name, Brigid Park was the suggestion of 113 (that was triggered by the article in April!), Oscar Wilde Park was proposed by 219 (triggered by Oscar Wilde’s statue in a corner of the park), Merrion Arts Garden was suggested by 98 and 45 thought Merrion Square was the best name (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0507/1224269870332.html). Not a strong vote for Merrion Square, but it seems that the City Councillors will propose the renaming of Merrion Square to the brand new name of …. Merrion Square. Probably the smartest decision since 1974!
APARTMENT BARGAINS
A few years ago most of us would have expected that bargains and apartments are two completely contradicting terms, but it is amazing what a bit of economic correction and some banking trouble can do to apartment prices. This weekend the Anglo Irish Bank is putting the first sets of apartments from bankrupt developments up for sale. The apartments are in Carrickmines and in Templeogue and the prices are One-beds start EUR 135,000 (1-bed), EUR 180,000 (2-bed) and EUR 250,000 (large 2-bed) in Carrickmines and EUR 275,000 and EUR 325,000 (2-bed, down from EUR 525,000) and EUR 340,000 (3-bed, down from EUR 620,000) in Templeogue. Not bad and a lot more realistic than what they were originally on the market for. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/property/2010/0610/1224272187779.html?via=mr Due to my day-job, I know the development in Carrickmines well, actually too well and could tell a few interesting stories about it. And I know the original builder too well as well, so I will stay away from it, but I am sure the apartments will be sold once the weekend is over.
SINGLE MEN WANTED
Do you remember reading about Outdoors Ireland in this Event Guide? Nathan Kingerlee is regularly running outdoor adventure events and he has made free tickets available for competitions before. For that reason I want to help him today and I want to help some of you: Nathan is looking for single men! But don’t worry, not for himself! ;-) Instead he is organising a Singles Weekend on 26-27 June and while a lot of women have signed up to it, there are still a few places for men to make sure that there is a balance. Guys, don’t be shy! Nathan tells me that the girls are very nice. ;-) You can find out more here outdoorsireland.blogspot.com/2010/06/single-men-wanted.html Oh and check out the Nationwide video clip that he mentions on the website. (As you can imagine, this event is not free.)
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
Some vacancies for this slot! If you want to be mentioned, contact me asap!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
DUBLIN SKETCHERS – SOL ART GALLERY
“Drawing a Crowd” is the title of an exhibition by the Dublin Sketchers. It is their first exhibition and will take place in the Sol Art Gallery in Dawson Street, Dublin 2. The exhibition will be on show from 11-17 June. It will open at 18:00 tonight. www.dublinsketchers.blogspot.com

FIFA WORLD CUP 2010
Today the World Championship of football (soccer) will kick off in South Africa. Without a doubt it will bring back memories (for example of a fateful game Ireland vs France) and it will create stress, excitement and annoyance in some people. I am not a big football fan normally, but the World Cup is something special, so I will watch some games and I think life is too short to get annoyed over it as many people (and a higher proportion of women) do. Go for a walk, read a book or – even better – just join in and enjoy the even. ;-) The matches in the group stages (until 25 June) are at 12:30, 15:00 and the latest game at 19:30, so unless you go for replays, all is done by 21:15 ;-). A good Match schedule is here world-cup.irishtimes.com/?mi=3

SUMMER FAIR 2010 – MARLAY HOUSE
What an interesting event and what a bad bad bad way of promoting it. Let me tell you first what the event is about: The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board is running this as a fair/exhibition for craftspeople, designers, food makers, business owners. It will take place in Marlay House from 11-13 June with an invitation-only launch on Fri 11 June and the main event (everybody is welcome) on Sat + Sun. (Admission is free). So there is a Enterprise Board that organises a fair in a nice environment for its members to showcase their products and services. That is a good and commendable idea.
The problem is how it is promoted: I would expect that some PR and Marketing people are members of the County Enterprise Board and it would be great if they got involved in this event to make sure that it is promoted properly. Have a look how it is promoted to the outside world: www.visitdublin.com/events/freeevents/Detail.aspx?id=242&mid=7589 Can you tell me what the event is about? No, not how old the venue is or if it is similar to the Winter Fair. I don’t care about that, just tell me what the event is about! Dooooh! Someone really messed up! Well, maybe the organiser has better information you wonder? I checked: www.dlrceb.ie/DLRCEB_Winter_Fair_2008/Default.325.html Check it out and weep! If I were an exhibitor, I would strangle someone. ;-)
POINT VILLAGE MARKET
The Point Village Market, will from now on take place every Sat+Sun from 08:30-17:30 and this week with the Maritime Festival around the corner you have an opportunity to check both out in one visit. The Point Village Market is next to the Point Depot (a.k.a. The O2) at the final LUAS stop in the Docklands.
There will be 100 stalls at the market every weekend, some permanent some more transient. 30 stalls per week are being designated for the public, 15 of which are for anyone who wants to offload their bric a brac, spring clean their wardrobe or generally de-clutter their living space. The other 15 are being designated for students that hold a valid student card and have made the products that they are selling, these student stalls are free of charge and all of the public stalls are given on a first come first served basis. The regular core stalls encompassing the remaining 70 units will be hand picked by VSC events Ltd. www.vscevents.ie/pointvillage.html

The new market is called The Ferocious Mingle Market and is an “Old Charm Irish market packed with banter & craic”. It will take place from 11:00-17:00 and will have 40 stalls. Traders, but as well visitors are invited to wear Fancy Dress. With Car Boot sales and Flea Markets appearing at every street corner in recent months, I guess the Old Charm style and the Fancy Dress (if kept up) will make the Ferocious Mingle Market different than all the others and could be very essential. Either way, let’s wish the guys good luck! …and I will definitely have a look this Sunday. www.thejosiebaggleycompany.com/pages/FerociousMingleMarket-info.htm and www.facebook.com/pages/The-Ferocious-Mingle-Market/119919821374353

This initiative is run by “Rothar” see www.rothar.ie The idea behind Active 8 is to build a habit of regular exercise in a safe environment for children and bring back the bike in anticipation of long bright spring and summer days! BIKEWEEK 2010
From Sun 13 June – Sun 20 June the National Bike Week is taking place. Have a look at it: bikeweek.ie/calendar Any chance of identifying an event that is suitable for you? I gave up! :-( The Dublin Cycling Initiative’s website doesn’t even mention the Bikeweek: dublincycling.ie/events If you are a cycling enthusiast, I suggest that you spend some time to trawl through all the events on the bikeweek.ie website to find the ones that are in Dublin and that are suitable for you and hopefully next year we will be able to search for location on the website. ;-)

The event will take place with the renowned Spanish writers: Eduardo Lago, Enrique Vila-Matas, Antonio Soler, Jordi Soler, Malcolm Otero and José Antonio Garriga Vela and with an introduction by an award-winning Irish writer.
The six Spanish authors formed La Orden del Finnegans (“The Order of Finnegans”), which takes its name from the pub in Dalkey and not the Joycean book. The Order has very few golden rules and its members seemingly have a healthy drive to oust one another from the group. These illustrious and comic gents convene on the 16th June every year in Dublin and add new commitments and rules to the Order. This they do with the thinly-veiled hope that one of them will slip up, and they will at last be able to follow Brendan Behan’s maxim, according to which the order of the day for any Irish republican organisation is first and foremost that of split. One of the decrees set in stone by the Order on Bloomsday last was the creation of this collective book. It looks as if the members’ obstinate desire for the self-destruction of the group, may not, alas, be as easy as first thought.

BLOOMSDAY – FACTS AND QUESTIONS
Wed 16 June 2010 is Blooms Day. Bloomsday celebrates the day on which the action of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses takes place, 16 June 1904, the day on which (we believe) Joyce first went out with his future wife, Nora Barnacle. The day is named after Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters – real and fictional – from 08:00 on 16 June through to the early hours of the following morning.
One of the earliest Bloomsday celebrations was a Ulysses lunch, organised by Sylvia Beach, publisher of Ulysses, and her partner Adrienne Monnier in France in June 1929. The first Bloomsday celebrated in Ireland was in 1954, the fiftieth anniversary of the first Bloomsday when the writers Patrick Kavanagh and Flann O’Brien visited locations like the Martello Tower at Sandycove, Davy Byrne’s pub, and 7 Eccles Street, reading parts of Ulysses and drinking a great deal as they went!
Today, Bloomsday is celebrated by Joyceans across the globe with readings, performances, re-enactments, and a host of other events. In Dublin, enthusiasts dress in Edwardian costume and gather during the day at many of the locations where episodes of Ulysses take place. The James Joyce Centre hosts Bloomsday breakfasts (including kidney, which Mr Bloom eats for breakfast in the novel) and other events in the run up to June 16 as well as on the day.
If Star Trek fans played through a day of their beloved film/book, or if the fans of Glee or SATC did something similar we would probably call them “mad” or wonder if they lost it and need psychiatric help. Possibly similar attributes should be applied and questions should be asked about Joycean’s? An odd bunch these Blooms Day celebrants!!
BLOOMSDAY CELEBRATIONS
The website www.jamesjoyce.ie/detail.asp?ID=137 and the PDF www.jamesjoyce.ie/docs/BLOOMSDAY_2010_JamesJoyceCentre.pdf list most of the official Bloomsday events and if you are interested you should have a look for all the details there. Many events are free.
In addition to these events the National Library and Libraries in Dublin will have film screenings in 16 June

The films will run continuously throughout the day, admission is free and no booking is required. Visitors can also view a virtual first edition of Ulysses which uses ‘turning the pages’ technology in the National Library’s exhibition Discover Your National Library: Explore, Reflect, Connect. www.nli.ie/en/list/current-events.aspx

His second book, Between Extremes, which he co-wrote with fellow hostage John McCarthy, was also a best seller. His other books include Four Quarters of Light a fascinating account of a journey through Artic Alaska, and Turlough a novel based on the life of the Irish harpist, composer and singer Turlough O’Carolan. His memoir about his early life in Belfast I’ll Tell My Ma was published last year. www.nli.ie/en/list/current-events.aspx

———Pre-Announcements————————
This section contains lots of events this week that happen in the future some of them require free tickets and it is mentioned where this is the case. Put the events in your diary and for the ticketed events hurry to request your tickets:
STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The wonderful Street Performance World Championship is back next weekend and whatever you do you just HAVE to go to it! :-) This is not an optional event, it is a must-go event! ;-) You will enjoy the performances, this year the last performance on Saturday and Sunday will start at 18:30 so the festival will go until 19:30. Starting at 12:30, you can watch 7 1-hour long full performances per day or you can flit between the performances. There are some differences this year apart from the later finish. On the website it says the festival starts on Thurs 17 June already, but when you check the timetable on the website you can’t find anything for Thurs and Fri. The explanation is this: Thurs+Fri are warm up days for the performers. There will be performances on two pitches from 12:00-19:00 with the last performance starting at 18:20 on both days. Because the timetable is not fully fixed it is not on the website. (but it would have been great if the website would say that somewhere!) Speaking of which: The website is quite problematic. All runs through flash and that means that you have not much of a chance if your screen doesn’t have the resolution/size the programmers expected. Not the smartest solution!
I will tell you a bit more next week, but don’t forget to schedule the SPWC in for next weekend! www.spwc.ie
SPACE HOOPER – WORLD RECORD
A fun event during the Street Performance World Championship will be a Guinness World Record Attempt fir the most amount of people bouncing on Space Hoppers (that’s the big bouncy ball with “horns”). This attempt is going to happen at Merrion Square, Dublin 2 near the Peppercanister Church at 14:00 on Sun 20 June. If you want to take part you have to register. The first 1,500 people to send an email to worldrecord@spwc.ie will be invited to become part of the World Record. The bouncy ball will be provided, but you will be asked to donate money EUR 2 – 10 for participating. The donations go to Africa Aware a charity that helps AIDS orphans and abandoned children in Malawi. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123680067652792
TOY STORY 3 In-Cinema Gaming Events
To celebrate the release of TOY STORY 3 – THE GAME and TOY STORY 3, Disney/Pixar have teamed up with Whizz Kids Summer Camps to find Ireland’s Top Toy Story Gamers. You are invited to join them to experience TOY STORY 3 – THE GAME, before anybody else…and on the big screen! Entry is free but pre-registration is essential. In Dublin the event will take place on Sat 19 June in Movies@Dundrum. If you want to take part go to www.whizzkids.ie for registration and further details including a list of prizes to be won. All entrants must be under 12.

RYAN TUBRIDY TO TAKE OVER FROM GERRY RYAN
It has been announced on Thursday that Ryan Tubridy will take over Gerry Ryan’s radio slot (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0610/breaking56.html) and this is not overly odd it is more a decision that is not the biggest surprise. But would be odd if it is true, is that allegedly the pay package that Ryan Tubridy will get is for EUR 1 mio as it was reported last Sunday: www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/kfcwkfqlcwey/rss2/ Tubridy decided that he should release a statement yesterday saying that he does not get more money for taking over Gerry Ryans slot. But consider this: In 2008 he had a salary of EUR 533,333, the last year for which figures are available. This was a nearly 50 per cent increase on his 2007 earnings of EUR 366,867. This was BEFORE he took over as the presenter of the most prestigious TV chat show, the Late Late Show. So if from 2007 to 2008 he got a nearly 50% increase. How much of an increase would he get for being in charge of the most important RTE programme? Maybe he is on EUR 800,000? Or more? And if you add bonuses and pension etc, then I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years we will find out that it IS actually 1 mio he is getting!
If RTE was a private company, they could pay whatever they wanted and while I have doubts that a single employee can be worth 1mio, it would be their decision. However RTE is NOT a private company. Instead it is a semi-private company that is meant to be neutral and balanced and therefore gets your and my money to guarantee the neutrality through our license fees. However in addition they take advertisement money and get lots of money for it and if the argument for the TV licence is to guarantee neutrality, then this implies that advertisement corrupts neutrality. If a radio and TV show host gets between 500,000-1 mio because he is attracting a multiple of this in advertisement, then this is the clear declaration of RTE that they are not and don’t want to be independent and neutral. And then we should help them and put them on the same footing as TV3 and 98 FM etc. RTE should definitely not receive any further TV licence fees.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
