Hi all!

Did you enjoy the Dublin City Soul Festival? After last week’s good start, the Outdoor-Festival Season continues at this bank holiday weekend with the Maritime Festival and in addition there are movies in Dun Laoghaire and the great ToeJam Car Boot Sale takes place. In Greystones an Americana & Roots Festival is taking place and – a little further – in Leixlip a town festival is the main event this weekend.

I guess we can’t complain about being bored in our little Ireland! ;-)

This weekend, I will definitely go to the Maritime Festival and to the new Point Village Market, probably on Sunday or Monday. In addition I plan to visit Bloom in Phoenix Park, the ToeJam Car Boot Sale on Sun and would like to go to the Americana & Roots Festival in Greystones (see Saturday). Maybe I will make the Crafty Market in the new venue on Sunday as well? Well, after that programme, I probably need ANOTHER day off to recover. ;-) I hope nobody is complaining about two few events in Dublin. :-)

CHARITY 90s NIGHT – TICKET COMPETITION
A friend of mine, Laura Ryder, has gone a little mad. ;-) …in a good way obviously! She has decided to climb the Kilimanjaro in August! Now, as far as I know, Laura is not a regular at high mountains and an 8 day climb is not for everybody, so it is definitely a challenging goal. And to make it all worth a LOT more, she is raising money for the teenage mental health charity Headstrong and the Simon Community with it. On Fri 11 June she is inviting everybody to the Sugar Club, Leeson Street, for a 90s night with live music from “Pump Up The Jam”. The event starts at 20:00 and it is important that you are there BEFORE 23:00 because if you arrive after that time then the next act on the evening gets all the money and NOT the charities. Admission is EUR 10 and if you arrive before 23:00 Laura’s charities get the money AND you are still allowed to stay for the following gig which is a Brazilian night. Two gigs for the price of one! GETTING PUBLISHED SEMINAR – TICKET COMPETITION

ANDRAE CROUCH + ISRAEL HOUGHTON – TICKET COMPETITION
The Grammy-decorated Gospel Singers Andrea Crouch and Israel Houghton were in Dublin and Gospel Music Ireland (www.gospelmusicireland.com) have made a pair of tickets available for the concert on Tue 01 June in the National Basketball Arena. The winner was Felicity Williams! Congratulations!
BLOOM IN THE PARK – PHOENIX PARK
The Bord Bia Bloom festival is taking place from 03-07 June in Phoenix Park. It is not a free event but there are a lot of special offers on tickets in advance of the show and kids go free. AND Bord Bia have made 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets for a competition in the Event Guide. FIVE HUGHES&HUGHES BOOK SHOPS RE-OPEN
Five of the former Hughes&Hughes book shops that closed when the chain went into receivership in February have or will re-open shortly after they were bought by a company called Sivota Ltd. The shops are in St Stephen’s Green shopping centre, Dundrum Town Centre, Omni shopping centre in Santry, in the Pavilions shopping centre in Swords and in Ennis. www.rte.ie/business/2010/0603/hughes.html Some might think it is odd that the person that was heavily involved when the company failed, is now heavily involved in buying these shops again (possibly debt free!?). www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/0414/1224268308960.html Isn’t it great how companies can do that? :-/ And who cares about the suppliers that lose a LOT when a company closes down, doesn’t pay the debt, but then re-appears again debt-free.

WOMEN JOGGING IN DUBLIN
Every year when spring comes out I realise at some point that there is an overproportional amount of women running/jogging/power walking on the streets of Dublin’s suburbs. Wondering why that suddenly is the case and going through the list of upcoming events, I realise every year, that it is 3-5 days before the Women’s Mini Marathon. :-D Is it the panic that drives the female runners onto the street when – just a couple of days before the 10km run – they realise that they didn’t train or prepare as much as they had originally planned? ;-)

THE GLOR SESSION – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
The Glór Sessions is a weekly music and poetry event. MARITIME FESTIVAL – DUBLIN DOCKLANDS
The Dublin Docklands Maritime Festival is taking place from Fri 04 – Mon 07 June. Visiting ships, stages with musical entertainment and as the – main feature – a vast amount of stands in a big outdoor market will tempt you to the docklands, where this year the festival takes place on the quays both north and south of the Liffey. The Maritime Festival is suitable for all ages and is very much family friendly. The opening times are Fri 04 June 13:00-22:00, Sat 05 June 10:00-22:00, Sun 06 10:00-20:00 and Mon 07 June 10:00-18:00. POINT VILLAGE MARKET
The Point Village Market, will from now on take place every Sat+Sun from 08:30-17:30 and this week with the Maritime Festival around the corner you have an opportunity to check both out in one visit. The Point Village Market is next to the Point Depot (a.k.a. The O2) at the final LUAS stop in the Docklands.
There will be 100 stalls at the market every weekend, some permanent some more transient. 30 stalls per week are being designated for the public, 15 of which are for anyone who wants to offload their bric a brac, spring clean their wardrobe or generally de-clutter their living space. The other 15 are being designated for students that hold a valid student card and have made the products that they are selling, these student stalls are free of charge and all of the public stalls are given on a first come first served basis. TOEJAM CAR BOOT SALE – BERNARD SHAW
The best car boot sale of them all is taking place again in the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street, near Portobello. It is the ToeJam Car Boot Sale on 06 June. It is not the things that you can buy that are so great, no it is the atmosphere there (and maybe some memories ;-) ). The ToeJam CBS is just different and zany (in a good way ;-) ). IPSC MASS DEMONSTRATION – PARNELL STREET
The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), with the support of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has called a mass demonstration for 14:00 this Sat 05 June in Dublin to protest against Israel’s raid of the “Freedom Flotilla” which was transporting essential goods to Gaza. Freedom Flotilla deportees will speak at the event. The demonstration will assemble at 14:00 at the Garden of Remembrance, where a wreath will be laid in memory to the dead and from there they will march to the Department of Foreign Affairs on St. Stephen’s Green. The speakers will be Dr. Fintan Lane and other participants from the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. LIFFEY SWIM – DOCKLANDS
Every year there are two Liffey Swims. One is the Dockland Liffey Swim and the other one is the one later in the summer that starts near the Guinness Brewery and goes to the IFSC. The Liffey Swim is significantly shorter with a distance of 1.1 km. This year’s Docklands Liffey Swim takes place on Sat 05 June at 17:00 during the Maritime Festival. The men’s race takes off from Dublin City Moorings, opposite the IFSC, at 17:00, followed by the women’s race at 17:45. English Channel swimmers, Julieann Galloway, Anne McAdam, Eoin Gaffney will take part and this year’s course consists of a loop between the Sean O’Casey and new Samuel Beckett Bridge both ideal viewing points for the race. www.dublindocklands.ie/maritimefestival/index.jsp?p=721&n=689

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts!! Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON
On Mon 07 June the yearly Women’s Mini Marathon will take place. Approx. 40,000 (!!!) women will walk, jog, trot or run the 10 km course for their chosen charity. Men are not allowed to take part. Until about 2 years ago men were allowed to help raising funds for charities and to run along with their female team mates if they were dressed up as women, but this is now not allowed anymore. The Women’s Mini Marathon begins at Fitzwilliam Square and finishes at St Stephen’s Green, taking in a loop around Ballsbridge and Donnybrook in south Dublin. In 2007, the race raised more than EUR 10 mio. If you haven’t registered yet, it is unfortunately too late for this year, but you can still watch and – surprise – men are allowed to watch and cheer the runners on as well. I wonder when that will be changed! ;-) Similar events typically start in the morning, but this Mini Marathon kicks off at 15:00. Wide reaching road closures come in effect well before that, so avoid the area of Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square. www.womensminimarathon.ie

On Wed 09 June (18:00-20:00) the National Library in Kildare Street is hosting a special one-off screening of Professor Helen Vendler’s lecture on Yeats’s “Vacillation” which was originally delivered as part of a master class at Harvard University Humanities Center (October 2008). Helen Vendler is the A. Kingsley Porter University Professor at Harvard, where she received her Ph.D. in English and American literature. She has written books on Yeats, Herbert, Keats, Stevens, Shakespeare, and Seamus Heaney. She holds twenty-five honorary doctorate degrees and is a frequent reviewer of contemporary poetry in such journals as The New York Times Book Review, The New York Review of Books, and The New Republic. FIFA WORLD CUP 2010
Today the World Championship of football (soccer) will kick off in South Africa. Without a doubt it will bring back memories (for example of a fateful game Ireland vs France) and it will create stress, excitement and annoyance in some people. I am not a big football fan normally, but the World Cup is something special, so I will watch some games and I think life is too short to get annoyed over it as many people (and a higher proportion of women) do. THAI CULTURAL FAMILY DAY
On Sat 12 June from 14:00-16:00 the Thai Cultural Family Day will take part in the Chester Beatty Library. “Join us for our annual Family Day celebrating Thai culture. We are delighted to welcome back the Thai Dance Academy and Thai Music Circle London to perform on the day. We will also have activities for families to explore the Library’s Thai collection.” The vent is free, but you have to book and you can do that online on www.cbl.ie from Mon 07 June from 09:30.

CYCLING RACES – DOPING AND CHEATING?
I know we have never heard anything like that from the cycling sports. :-) But there are some new rumours. I know this might not be of interest to everyone, but I came across an article in a German magazine this week that was talking about a potential new way of cheating at cycling races. If it is true, it will leave you speechless! It is alleged that Fabian Cancellara is using a small engine (!!) in his bike to help him during bike races. The start of the video clip is very technical and goes on for a little long, but move forward to 5:25 and have a look a Cancellara’s amazing uphill performance.
