Hi all!

After last week’s early appearance of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), this week we are back to the normal Friday morning delivery. I know that some of you would prefer receiving this newsletter on a Thursday, but because writing it is a spare-time project not my day job, I will currently only be able to send it occasionally on a Thursday. If I get lots of donations from you I might be able to change that, but for the moment you will have to live with receiving this e-mail on Friday.

Did you realise that the evenings are getting longer again? I know the last few days it nearly felt as if the day never really started, but last Monday you could sense that spring was on its way! I can’t wait. :-) Now I can’t really complain because I had some more wonderful snow when I was in Germany last weekend and came back to Dublin in sunshine.

Are you too looking forward to spring or summer and sun? Often we make plans for the summer. All the things we intend to do when the weather is better and the sun shines and it is warm!? And then we have summer for one weekend only and that weekend is not long enough to fulfill all the dreams. Have you ever experienced that?

Do you do that maybe in other areas in your life too? “I will do this or that when I am retired?” or “…when the kids are grown up” or “…when I found my perfect partner” or “…when I have enough money”. And like that the fulfilment of your dreams is pushed so far away that it might never happen?

A few weeks ago Dogukan from Istanbul contacted me. He had the idea of setting up the Istanbul Event Guide (for Free Events) and was wondering if I had some advise for him. I told him that the most important thing was to start doing it! We often postpone and postpone until the conditions are perfect only to find out that they are always only CLOSE to perfect. So my suggestion for you this week is DO IT! What ever you wanted to do for a long time and have postponed again and again, start it NOW! Don’t wait any longer! My week will be very busy with all preparations for our gig “The Elvis Presley Story” on Friday and Saturday of next week (see Competition section). We are rehearsing nearly every evening this week so there is unfortunately no time for any other event, not even my normal training with www.kravmagaireland.com.
But if I had time I would do this: On Saturday I would go to the IFI Open Day for some free film screenings. On Sunday the Crafty Market and the Harold’s Cross Car Boot Sales would be my events of choice during the day and Comedy Crunch in the evening. During the week some of the Engineers Week events, the Be Inspired DIT lunchtime talk on Wednesday and any time after Thursday the Love Lab in the Science Gallery would be on my programme. Obviously on Friday and Saturday evening I can’t recommend anything but our “Elvis Presley Story” in the Olympia. ;-)

ELVIS PRESLEY STORY – OLYMPIA THEATRE – TICKETS
I mentioned this upcoming event last week but hadn’t received confirmation for a competition yet. This week I can tell you more. Kevin Doyle Sings the Elvis Presley Story at The Olympia Theatre on Fri 12 and Sat 13 Feb. And with him there will be a band and a choir on stage that will fill the stage at this massive production with 22 brilliant musicians. Hmmm, am I allowed to call them all brilliant? Well, let’s say 21 are brilliant and I am the 22nd. :-) I am singing in Kevin Doyle’s backing choir and we will perform an amazing celebration of Elvis Presley’s life through his songs for you. If Elvis is not your thing: COME! You will love it! ;-) If you know somebody in your life or your family who likes Elvis, bring them! They will love it too! The atmosphere is always great at our gigs and this one will be extra special. Maybe you will bring the love of your life? Then we will sing some of Elvis’ love songs for you! :-)

BIRDBATH – THEATRE – TICKET COMPETITION
Donna Anita Nikolaisen contacted me last week and told me about her upcoming performance of the New York valentine “Birdbath” by Leonard Melfi and directed by Paddy Kelly. Donna and her team will perform Birdbath in the International Bar, Wicklow St, Dublin 1 between 15-20 Feb at 18:00 every day. Admission is EUR 7 and the story sounds gripping: This 1-Act play is set in 1960s New York. Birdbath opens with Frankie Basta (a cashier and aspiring poet played by Tim Dillard) meeting the neurotic and troubled Velma Sparrow (a waitress, played by Donna) showing how their relationship develops during a night in February. This is a play about an unlikely love, the consequence of abuse, guilt and the basic human need – to be understood.

CENTRE FOR CREATIVE PRACTICES – COURSE COMPETITION

30 KM/H IN DUBLIN CITY
I am sure most of you have heard about the new speed limits in Dublin City. Since the 31 Jan the City Centre has a new speed limit of 30 km/h (down from 50 km/h). Dublin City’s justification is that with that lower speed limit accidents with pedestrians will be reduced. I am not sure how many accidents occur in that highly congested city centre area. But I would expect that the rate is not huge. The AA is against the new speed limit and some city councillors called the councillors that support the new speed limit “muppets”. As a car driver I am not to keen on 30 km/h, but I do see a justification for it in areas like Dame Street where there can be plenty of cars and plenty of pedestrians. But in other areas and especially during the night, such a speed limit is nonsensical. Well, Dublin City is known for making stupid decisions when it comes to traffic rules and regulations and as with the car ban at College Green that was lifted again (temporarily) during the Christmas period often enough U-turns were necessary soon after. Interestingly the speed limit is – for technical reasons – virtually unenforceable in streets like Dame Street or in all other streets where there are many pedestrians. But I guess that is a completely different problem!

CARLUCCIO’S CAFÉ TO CLOSE
The Irish Times reported on Wednesday “Carluccio’s closes with loss of 60 jobs”. Carluccio’s Café is the light blue tinted restaurant in 52 Dawson Street. It is part of a british chain of Italian Cafes with in-store Delis. And it seems that the high rent in Dawson Street finished the place. I couldn’t find it anywhere in the articles last week, but I seem to remember reading around the time of Carluccio’s opening that the rent in that building was approx. 300,000 per year. If my memory is right, then you wonder how a Café every thought that such a rent would be an ok price AND you have to wonder what planet the property owners live on to charge prices like that. RYANAIR IN THE TOP 10??
The swiss research firm Covalence publishes yearly and quarterly ethical rankings covering 581 companies within 18 sectors. And our beloved Ryanair made it into the Top 10! Unfortunately, though, it is not the Top 10 most ethical companies, instead Ryanair is in the Top 10 of the LEAST ethical companies. They are on position 575 out of 581 companies. Worse than Ryanair are Philip Morris, Chevron, Halliburton and the GM-Food company Monsanto. NOT impressive!

BIG TAXI DISCOUNTS – TALLAGHT
Competition is typically very good for consumers. Prices go down and/or the service will improve. This week, while searching for free events, I came across an offer from a Taxi Driver in Tallaght for a 50% discount on all fares. He has a 6-seater and is available 24×7 mainly in Tallaght but with longer notice as well all over Dublin. In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! RUN WITH TINA – RUNNING COURSES FOR WOMEN
Tina Murphy recently started ‘Running Made Easy’ courses for women. This is a course for all women who want to take up running and want to do it safely and as easily as possible. It’s suitable for all fitness levels and is especially good for couch potatoes :-). It’s gentle and safe approach, and Tina places a lot of emphasis on proper posture, stretching, correct breathing and listening to your body and going at your own pace. By the end of the 8 week course you will be able to run non-stop for 20 to 30 minutes and you will have lots of fun, make friends and learn to enjoy exercise on the way. Tina’s January courses were booked out immediately but some additional courses are now available with start dates of 15 March & 10 May. The meeting point is in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 and you will run on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 18:30. The course duration is 8 weeks and the cost are EUR 150.

THE SIX MEMOS PROJECT – THE JOINERY

The first chapter of The Six Memos project, ‘paperplane’, will show work by Caline Aoun, Niall De Buitléar, Guestroom and Vera Klute responding to recent negotiations between European editors and Google regarding a lucrative and legislated agreement on the digitisation of the world’s books. TONDO – PEARSE STREET LIBRARY
The inaugural exhibition of the Tondo artgroup will be on show in Pearse Street Library from 03-26 Feb. The exhibition will show drawing, painting, sculpture and installation by Gerard Cox, Lioubov Kadyrova, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Eve Parnell.

SEAN HILLEN – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
“Return to Irelantis” is a collection of work by Irish artist Seán Hillen. It will be shown in the Alliance Francaise from 11 Feb – 10 Apr. “Best known for his Irelantis series, where competing myths and visions cohabit a deliciously witty montage, Hillen is one of the most significant artists of his generation.
As the Irelantis images have come to be seen as the most vivid and emblematic expression of the dreams and anxieties of the Celtic Tiger, his works from the ‘Troubles’ era, based on his own photographs, have become more widely-known internationally and are now studied as masterworks of the medium.
In this exhibition the public will get a rare opportunity to see several of the delicate almost miniature original collages, together with a selection of a new definitive edition of archival prints.” Opening reception is on Thurs 11 Feb at 18:30. DUBLIN MAPPING PARTY – OPEN STREET MAP PROJECT
Jef B found out about an interesting but slightly niche event. It is a Dublin Mapping Party which is part of the OpenStreetMap project. Let me explain: In every country there is typically some official organisation that is responsible for all maps in that country. In Ireland it is the OSI (Ordnance Survey Ireland) and they not only create all the maps but charge often a very high price for the use of the maps. In the past creating maps was a complicated task but with GPS devices in most sophisticated phones, mapping is a lot simpler now. The OpenStreetMap project is a project that wants to make reliable maps available for free and as Open Source and it requires the help of many people to achieve that. “Mapping parties are social events where experienced and new mappers can meet to share and learn more about the project. The events are generally held in a public place, and allow time for discussion, mapping and editing. The event is open to all. It’s fun. It’s free. You can help.” The event is taking place in TOG, the Dublin hackerspace at 40 Arran Quay, Floor 2, Smithfield, Dublin 7. The times are Sat 06 Feb from 14:00-18:00 and Sun 07 Feb from 12:00.

IFI OPEN DAY – Free FILM SCRRENINGS
On Sat 06 Feb the Irish Film Institute (IFI) is inviting to their Open Day to mark the end of a major redevelopment project, and to officially launch the new cinema, IFI Café Bar, IFI Film Shop and other new and improved facilities. The whole day all film screenings are free (but ticketed!) and there will be a wide variety of films to choose from. “The selection ranges from classic films to previews of some hotly-anticipated new releases, along with films from many of the IFI’s programming strands including Stranger Than Fiction, IFI Family and Archive at Lunchtime, giving audiences a chance to experience the breadth of programming that is on offer year-round at the IFI. With fourteen free screenings taking place in all three cinemas, special guests, workshops and music, it promises to be a celebration to remember.”
Tickets for all films will be available from 11:00 on Sat 06 Feb and you should expect huge demand so be there early! Tickets will not be available online or by phone and with a maximum of 4 tickets per person, all will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. SCUBA FEST – DUN LAOGHAIRE
On Sat 06 Feb at 20:00 a free Scuba Fest is taking place in Dun Laoghaire’ Royal Marine Hotel. Based on the waterfront of Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Oceandivers are a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Dive Centre that teaches complete beginners to Scubadive and also run trips and holidays for divers around Ireland and abroad. The biggest concern of the cold water is brushed away by the guys from Oceandivers with “While Ireland may not be the Maldives or the Red Sea, it’s amazing how good the Atlantic coast can be for scuba adventures. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

SOUL STEP – DANCE WORKSHOP
Do we have teenage girls in the Dublin Event Guide Community or do you know any? You should definitely tell them about this event. (Boys you are invited as well, but I know that most of you are not THAT much into dancing!) ENGINEERS WEEK
From 08-13 Feb the Engineers Week 2010 will take place. Engineers Week is a week long programme of nationwide events with the aim of celebrating the world of engineering. The aim of the week is to create a positive awareness and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession and to raise awareness about engineering as a career! As a consequence many events are targeting primary and secondary school students. On www.engineersweek.ie there are the categories “Families” and “General Public” but unfortunately the flashy looking (but somewhat difficult to use) website doesn’t reveal which events are targeted at grown-ups. ;-)

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – GUANTANAMO PUBLIC MEETING
Amnesty International Ireland is hosting a public meeting where former Guantánamo detainee Moazzam Begg will call on the Irish Government to put pressure on EU member states to follow the Irish example and accept other former detainees for resettlement. He is joined by lawyers from Reprieve and the US Center for Constitutional Rights. The event is part of a tour across Europe urging more states to offer the men a safe haven. The meeting will take place in the Irish Aid Centre on O’Connell Street at 19:00 on Mon 08 Feb.
Approximately 50 of the just under 200 detainees currently held in Guantánamo cannot be sent back to their countries of origin because they would face a real risk of human rights violations such as torture or other ill-treatment. They come from countries including China, Libya, Russia, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.

ProFoto2010, a trade show for photographers is taking place on Tues 09 + Wed 10 Feb in the Green Isle Hotel, Newlands Cross, Naas Road between 10:00-17:00. There are seminars etc which seem to be free but it is not certain if attendance is free. LUNCHTIME CONCERTS – NATIONAL CONCERT HALL
Brian Irvine is the featured composer in a free lunchtime concert by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the fourth and last event in the orchestra’s Horizons series. The concert takes place on Tues 09 Feb from 13:05 in the National Concert Hall. A Pre-concert talk with Brian Irvine will start at 12:30.

BUSINESS WEBINAR
The next UCD Business Alumni webinar is on the topic of negotiation and learning how to deal with hardball negotiators, who don’t want to listen or simply refuse to negotiate. MILK & COOKIE – STORIES TELLING EVENT

“Be Inspired. Be an entrepreneur” is a series of free live interviews with successful entrepreneurs organised by DIT Hothouse. FILM SERIES – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Inistute, Insituto Cervantes, is inviting to a series of films that continues on Wed 10 Feb at 18:30. The title of the series is “Sesión 2. MEDICINE AND STATE – NATIONAL LIBRARY LECTURE

* The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 17:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. The majority of people there are Spanish or English-speaking, but French, Italians, Polish and Chinese are sometimes coming to and everybody is welcome to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

LOVE LAB – SCIENCE GALLERY
From 11 Feb – 12 March the Science Gallery in the Naughton Institute Building at the Pearse Street side of Trinity College is converted into a Love Lab, investigating the Science of Desire. Opening hours are Tuesday-Friday 12:00-20:00 and Saturday-Sunday 12:00-18:00. Admission free but donations are appreciated. SOLO SAILING RACES IN FRANCE – TALK
Irish Sailor Paul Ó Riain competed solo onboard his yacht “CityJet” in La Solitaire du Figaro in 2007, a gruelling 1,800 mile 4 stage yacht race between France, Ireland and Spain. Come and hear Paul speak about racing in the world’s most competitive solo sailing event.
British Sailor Steve White staked all to compete in the 2008-9 Vendée Globe solo round the world race. His story, of how he made it to the start of the biggest, toughest and most dramatic round the world sailing race ever and completed his remarkable circumnavigation to finish an incredible 8th place from 30 starters is both inspiring and compelling.
The talk will be in English with questions and answers in French and English. Including photo & video footage and a wine reception afterwards. It will take place on Thus 04 Feb at 20:00. The Humanist Association of Ireland will hold their yearly Darwin Day Lecture on Thurs 11 Feb at 19:30. The lecture will be entitled “Noah’s Ark or Noah’s Coffin? – The challenge for biodiversity” and it will be given by Nigel Monaghan, Keeper of the Natural History Division of the National Museum of Ireland. HUG IN A PUB – THRESHOLD CHARITY EVENT
I am not sure if going to Dicey Reilly’s for a pint is free these days because I remember that the pubs in Harcourt Street had for a while some untypical rules and admission charges to get into a normal pub. Assuming that it is free into the pub you can get a peek for free at this event, but to take part will cost EUR 5: Threshold the charity that works with homeless people will launch Ireland’s first “Hug in a Pub” Campaign in Dicey Reilly’s, Harcourt Street, with clumsy Breffny Morgan, who was on the Irish Apprentice show, and Claire Tully, Ireland’s first page 3 model in The Sun. Breffny & Claire will be lined up with a photographer on standby, where pub goers can come up for a hug and have their picture taken to help raise funds for Threshold. People will pay EUR 5 to have their picture taken with either Claire or Breffny and the pictures will be available on Threshold’s facebook page the following Monday. DUBLIN CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
The Dublin Chinese New Year Festival (DCNYF) will run from 12-21 Feb and celebrates the year of the Tiger. 4 TOP SHOW – SUGAR CLUB

HAND-CUT CHIPS & HOME-MADE PRODCUTS
Have you ever wondered how hand-cut chips are cut? And why they are meant to be better than chips cut by a machine or by a knife? ;-) Does the quality change with the cutting instrument or would it not be possible to achieve a same cut and same taste if the chips where machine cut? I was recently in a restaurant where it was stressed that their chips are hand-cut and the chips where very good, there is no doubt, but since I guess that even “hand-cut” chips are cut with a knife and since machine cut chips are cut by a knife as well, I am still puzzled.
