Hi all!
What a weather we had this week. The chaos on Wednesday was, as a friend rightly said, like something out of the film “Day after Tomorrow”. Interestingly the amounts of snow that fell was not really huge. It was nothing in comparison to the 40 cm in the UK this week or to the meters of snow that I remember from Bavaria when I was there many many years ago. But Ireland is totally and utterly unprepared for it and while we can’t and shouldn’t have snowploughs and all other equipment like it is needed in places where there is regular heavy snowfall, I would have expected that BEFORE today the main streets should have been cleared. The bit of snow today would have still caused problems but not necessarily the chaos it did cause.
I remember 15 years ago being totally amazed about the fact that in Ireland the schools just close if there is a bit of snow. But that was 15 years ago! Who would have thought that we haven’t moved a tiny bit further since:

[ad]
Last week I was talking about New Year’s resolutions and how ineffective they usually are. If you want to do things differently this year, then instead write down your goals (even in the second week of January it is not too late for that!) Write them down with an end date and with an end step. For example: “It is now 30 June and I just came back from a 5km run during which I didn’t have to stop once.” Or in my case “It is now 31 December and I am checking the number of Event Guide subscribers and it shows more than 7500!” The end date is the 30 June or 31 December and the end step is the coming back from the run or checking the subscriber counter. I guarantee you that this approach is a LOT more effective than New Year’s Resolutions along the lines “I will eat less sweets from now on!” If you have goals that you want to achieve and you don’t know yet how, if you need help with setting your goals or if you need someone to hold you accountable so that you will make sure that you deliver on these goals, send me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject GOALS. I am a certified Master Results Coach and Performance Consultant and if you need help achieving your goals, I might be able to help you.
Can you help with my goal to grow our Dublin Event Community to 7500 by the end of this year? Just print out these Mini-Flyers (6 per page) cut them and hand them out to friends, family and colleagues or just to random people in town. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
And if you work, shop or study somewhere where there is a noticeboard, then please print this page and hang it up! Oh and after that please check it every now and then so that you can replace the page when needed!
For the “Feel Good Slot” this week, I selected a You Tube clip that has Anthony Robbins, the well-known motivational speaker and trainer, explaining how to do goal setting. Invest a few minutes and listen to it, ESPECIALLY if previously you have failed achieving one or more of your goals? www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBraIGG-Gfs The clip is only a snippet from a longer CD by Anthony Robbins, but it nevertheless is worth listening to.

The lovely mystery Santa who donated some money but who’s name I couldn’t see on my bank statement was found. Thanks Renata V. :-) If you want to be part of the wonderful group of sponsors of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), just send me your donation. EUR 12 per year is not a lot of money and is a HUGE help to cover the cost.

Currently more than 5000 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the section above. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month i.e. 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter) as a fair donation. (A once-yearly payment is better for you and me than a monthly payment.) — I know, some of you multiply 5000 x 12 and come up with huge numbers. ;-) I like your positive thinking, but over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so I am definitely not enriching myself ;-), your donation is really only used to ensure the survivability of this newsletter.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” (pls send me a mail afterwards so that I can thank you!) or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Did it snow AGAIN this morning? Hmm, we will have a gig (Kevin Doyle + Elvis Tribute Band) in Cork on Sunday evening. I hope we will be able to make it. If you are in Dublin on Sunday, you should definitely go to the Polish Charity Event “WOSP”.
For all you dance enthusiasts, this week has a special treat for you. DanceHouse in Foley Street is inviting to lots and lots of free Dance Taster Classes from Monday to Thursday. Don’t miss that opportunity! I won’t be there ;-) but I will definitely go to the Gooseberry Awards on Thursday in the Sugar Club. Will I see you there?
Add to that the Milk and Cookies Storytelling evening (Tues), an Italian Conference (Mon) and the screening of “The Secret” on Wednesday, there should be something for most people this week.

______Competition______________
ARGENTINIAN TANGO – SEBASTIAN PECZNIK TOUR – TICKETS
Simona Zaino from Compadrito Tango (www.tangofever.net) told me about a concert by Sebastian Pecznick, an Argentine guitarist who is on his European tour and who will be in Dublin for one night only. The event is taking place on Sat 09 Jan at 18:00 in Mother Reilly’s Bar in Rathmines (opposite Tesco). “After releasing his latest tango album, Argentine guitarist Sebastian Pecznik is now touring Europe to present his soulful music to the international audience. He invites you to join a magical journey in which the guitar, as a solo instrument, expresses the sensuality of Tango music.. The repertoire includes pieces by Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, Anibal Troilo and other renowned Buenos Aires musicians. Special guests: Tango dancers Simona Zaino & Hernan Catvin will accompany Sebastian’s performance for a taste of the authentic Buenos Aires atmosphere.” www.myspace.com/sebastianpecznik. Compadrito Tango made a pair of tickets available for a competition and the lucky winner is Sandra Reategui. Congrats!
If you too want to enjoy Sebastian’s music you can buy tickets at the door for EUR 15 (EUR 12 before 17:30). Tapas & full Restaurant menu is available throughout the evening.
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
DON’T GO SWIMMING!
It is a slightly odd time of announcing this issue, because HOPEFULLY there are not tooo many people swimming in the sea at weather like we had last week, but I guess for the tough ones among us: “Jellyfish Alarm on the East Coast”. On Tuesday marine scientists warned that record numbers of deadly Portuguese Man-O-War jelly fish have swarmed into the waters on Ireland’s east coast. If you sometimes swim in the sea or if you like poking the jelly fish on your walks on the beach, then watch out!
www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/east-coast-jellyfish-warning-440812.html
TWO HOURS TO CRACK SECURITY VAN
On Tuesday a Securicor van crashed and overturned on icy roads near Avoca in Co. Wicklow. And the Irish Times reports that it took the fire brigade two hours to crack the armoured vehicle. Helpful information for the criminal gangs. ;-)
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0105/breaking65.htm
“TEMPORARY” CLOSURE OF 3G MOBILE SHOPS
All 27 3G Mobile shops in Ireland closed on Tuesday. Allegedly the closure will be temporary, but it seems a strange move to close the shops while the company is looking for a new investor as it said in a press announcement. 3G Mobile was formed in 2003 when Sigma Wireless purchased the previously known Eircom Stores. 16 stores were expanded to 27, the company claimed to be an Irish Independent Enterprise and now it seems, things are looking bad. Strangely every other business would try to keep the business going as long as possible even during examinership etc. Because once closed, the customers will be somewhat reluctant to trust you again. Since most of the 160 employees were let go as it seems, maybe “temporary” is a very long duration? By the way, the 3G Mobile Shops have nothing to do with the mobile operator “3”. www.rte.ie/news/2010/0105/3g.html
HOTEL NEWS
A number of news about hotels might even interest you if you don’t tend to stay in hotels in Dublin:
The average price for a hotel room in Ireland has dropped below EUR 100 for the first time since the start of the economic challenges. www.breakingnews.ie/business/average-hotel-room-now-below-100-441084.html
The Montrose Hotel in Booterstown near UCD has closed his doors for at least 3 months and all 80 employees were let go. The hotel still has a big banner on the side wall quoting prices from EUR 79 per night, but allegedly the real price was often less than half that. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/0106/1224261731867.html
The accidental D4 Hotels (“accidental” because the hotels should have long been flattened and been replaced with a massive new development) are continuing to provide discount prices. For Jan+Feb, the Sun-Tues price for a room (not per person!) is from EUR 20.10. Imagine, to spend a night in a hotel you pay EUR 10 per person? I wonder if a night in a shelter for the homeless people is now more expensive than a night in what was formerly one of the top hotels of Dublin. d4hotels.ie/
PRIVATE MEMBERS CLUB IN EXAMINERSHIP
The private members club “Residence” on Stephen’s Green went into examinership due to millions of Euro in debts. The club was set-up in 2006 but only after an expensive renovation of the building near the Sony Shop on the Baggot Street end of Stephen’s Green it opened its doors in 2008. Already at that time the club attracted some controversy because the club license stipulated that they would have to allow non-members in as well but people that tested this were rejected.

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 5400+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
REINVENTION – CV PREPARATION + CAREER MANAGEMENT COURSES
Not just one, but even two Dublin Event Guide readers, Lisa Scully-O’Grady and Neil Doherty, have put their heads together and – with a third partner – have formed “Reinvention”, a new business that provides training courses such as “How to Recession Proof Your CV” and “How To Manage Your Career as a Business”. They will help you to take control of your career, your personal brand and to create the work life you want. If you are currently looking for a job because you were made redundant or because you want to change career, check out the next training courses Reinvention run on 14+15 Jan in Baldoyle, Co. Dublin. You can do the CV preparation course on its own or you can combine it with the “manage your career as a business” course. The company’s website is www.reinvention.ie/ and all details about the training courses can be found in the COURSES section.

EXHALE – MANDY O’NEILL
Norman Mailer has stated that boxing is a metaphor for life. Investment of time and energy in a tradition like boxing can be explained through the desire to achieve stability in a rapidly changing world. These images were taken over a two-year period at St Saviours Boxing club, Dorset St in Dublin. The exhibition will be on show in Alliance Française, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 until 06 Feb. ITALIAN RISORGIMENTO & IRISH NATIONALISM – CONFERENCE
“From Mazzini to Garibaldi: The Italian Risorgimento and Irish Nationalism” is the title of an international conference that takes place on Mon 11 Jan and Tues 12 Jan in Trinity College and the Italian Institute. In 1958 the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Dublin held three public lectures dedicated to the Irish perception of the Italian Risorgimento. The conference papers were later published under the title Ireland and the Italian Risorgimento, Three lectures by Kevin B. Nowlan, R. Dudley Edwards, T. Desmond Williams. The publication, along with the volume Daniel O’Connell, Proceedings of the Conference of studies on the 140th anniversary of his death, represented until 2005 the main historiographic reference on the subject.
In 2005 and 2009 the lectures and the conference papers attracted significant interes and it was the lively interest displayed in recent years that inspired the organization of this International Conference in Dublin, with the aim of drawing up a preliminary review of historiography and encouraging the emergence of a “study group” that could work on this issue in the future.
The first day (09:30-18:30) of the conference will take place in Trinity College Dublin (Room A6002, 6th Floor, Arts Building, Trinity College). The second day (10:00-18:00) will take place in the Istituto Italiano di Cultura,11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2. The conference is open to the public and free (15 Euro charge to cover the buffet lunch on 11 January) and to register please write to Professor Michele michefinelli@alice.it The detailed programme is here: www.tcd.ie/longroomhub/events/forthcoming/MazziniProgramme.php

BILL WILSON – DESTINY CHURCH TALK
Siobhan H. tells me that the Destiny Church Dublin is inviting to an event with guest speaker Bill Wilson. The Destiny Church describes: “Pastor Bill Wilson was abandoned as a child when one day, as he walked down a street with his mother, they stopped to sit for a while. She instructed him to sit there and wait for her to return. He sat and waited for three days straight. She never returned. A Christian gentleman who had seen Bill stranded and alone stopped and picked him up. It was here that Bill’s relationship with God began. Out of the pain, impoverishment and isolation of his own abandonment, Bill developed a heart of compassion for suffering children everywhere. From the ghettos of America to the garbage dumps of Manila, Bill has sought to rescue hurting children. In 1980 he established Metro Ministries in 1980 in what was one of Brooklyn’s roughest neighborhoods, the Bushwick community, most commonly known for its history of gang violence, crime, drugs, and poverty.
Bill Wilson will tell his story and share his experiences on Thurs 14 Jan from 19:30 in the Destiny Church, 64 Great Strand Street, Dublin 1 (behind the Morrison hotel). Check www.destinychurch.ie for more information and for map, directions and a parking map

———Pre-Announcements————————
This section contains lots of events this week that happen in the future some of them require free tickets and it is mentioned where this is the case. Put the events in your diary and for the ticketed events hurry to request your tickets:
WOLF OF WALL STREET
Jordan Belfort, who wrote two books “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Catching the Wolf of Wall Street”, earned once over $50 million a year as a big high-flyer on Wall Street and then dropped to the lowest possible point being seriously addicted to drugs and ending up in prison for 22 months. Definitely a controversial character with a very colourful story, he is now coming to Dublin on 23 Jan to present his talk “Breakthrough to Extreme Wealth” from 14:30-17:30 in the Westbury Hotel, near Grafton Street. The event is free but ticketed, so everyone who’s interested can reserve their seat here jordanbelfort230110-.eventbrite.com/
He promises to cover: “How to comeback from total financial disaster.”, “How to use the Wolf’s proprietary, Straight Line Persuasion System, to sell your vision to anyone. This is the system that created over 3,000 Millionaires in a nine-year period-most of them with no prior business experience and no college degree.”, “How to break through every obstacle that has stopped you from achieving massive wealth … and how to remove them from your life forever.” “How to turn “fear” into your greatest ally for wealth.” …and much more.

TRUST THE POLICE TO GET YOU INTO TROUBLE
I am sure you heard about this airport security test in Slovakia? Not everything is clear about it, but it seems the Irish authorities totally overreacted. All sides seem to agree that a Slovakian man brought 90g of explosive into Ireland. But what happened before and after doesn’t seem to be clear. It was a test for a sniffer dog and the Slovakian authorise say not 8 but only one person got the explosive put in the luggage without his knowledge. Seemingly the dog found it, but the dog handler only removed one parcel and not the second one. When he realised that one 90g package was still with the passenger, the pilot was informed and since an explosive substance without any ignition is safe, he decided to fly to Ireland. The Slovakians sent a Telex to Dublin Airport, but it was sent to Servisair not to the Airport Authorities (DAA). When the DAA finally found out about, the panic started. Suddenly the poor guy was suspected to be a terrorist. His house was raided by police after the whole neighbourhood got evacuated and the Slovakian electrician was interrogated for 3 hours despite the fact that the Irish police seemingly already knew that he had nothing to do with the explosive. Total overreaction! But then, this is the same police force that arrested an artist for drawing a caricature of the Taoiseach Brian Cowen. No, the Slovakian authorities weren’t smart either, but at least they owned up to the mistake and tried to inform everybody as speedily as possible. The pilot shouldn’t have taken off after he found out, but we can see from this event that it definitely is not the granny’s nail clipper that is the real danger in flights.

For all of us the result of the security issue over Christmas with the Nigerian guy will mean that most likely full-body scanners will be introduced. These scanners are not sufficiently researched as far as their possible health risks are concerned and apart from that, detection methods like that will only protect against the stupid badies. The next step for the determined attacker is to carry all dangerous substances internally and can you imagine the security measures we will then have to endure once that has been detected the first time? Rubber gloves for anybody?? Eeeek! gothamist.com/2009/12/28/new_flight_security_rules_keep_you.php
