Hi all!

The Christmas atmosphere has firmly arrived with really really cold days (and especially nights) and a temperature jump of 10 degrees to the next night. All we need now is a nice Christmas Market and we are sorted for the next few weeks. ;-) It didn’t look good for a while, but in the end I managed to carve three days out to go to Germany before Christmas to enjoy the real and original Christmas markets and to soak in a bit of the atmosphere over there. The good news is that this will impact you not or only slightly! If everything goes according to plan, your Event Guide will arrive no matter where I am. :-)
[ad]
This week I am quite under pressure to get this newsletter finished. Last night I was meant to be at three events at the same time as a contributor not just as attendant AND I should have worked on the Event Guide. The only event I was able to go to was a great concert of the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, where I did/was meant to do the sound engineering. But it means that today I am a LOT later again with the completion of the Event Guide.

Please help letting lots more people know about the Event Guide by printing out the flyers that I have put together some while ago and by hanging them up at your work place or in your university or school or sports club/gym/church:
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
If you have another idea how to spread the word, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Spread the word” in the subject line. All serious ;-) suggestions will be mentioned in one of the next issues and you will get credit for it!

For this week’s “Feel Good Slot” I chose a very short and VERY cute little video clip about a little kitten. Does a lovely and cuddly kitten make you feel warm around your heart? It does it for me. ;-) www.neatorama.com/2009/11/28/short-sweet-and-adorable/

Currently more than 5000 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the section above. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month i.e. 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter) as a fair donation. (A once-yearly payment is better for you and me than a monthly payment.) — I know, some of you multiply 5000 x 12 and come up with huge numbers. ;-) I like your positive thinking, but over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so I am definitely not enriching myself ;-), your donation is really only used to ensure the survivability of this newsletter.

You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. Let me know if it is helpful, otherwise I might remove this section again to shorten the newsletter. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

GREENAER ELECTRIC BIKE OFFER
GreenAer Eco Electric Vehicles were one of the first companies mentioned in this Event Guide as a new/start-up company in the “Opportunities” section. Today GreenAer has an exclusively offer for all Dublin Event Guide readers, which is a great idea for a present for someone else or for yourself.
From now until Christmas GreenAer is offering a EUR 200 discount on their range of EASYBIKE Electric Bikes and this electric bike comes with a free Oxford heavy duty lock (worth an additional EUR 45). All GreenAer bikes are also eligible for the “Cycle to Work Scheme” which means there are even further savings available. TO see this offer go to www.greenaer.ie/event-guide-offer.php now or call on 01-2108134. Quote ‘Dublin Event Guide’ when you order to avail of the full discount. Check www.greenaer.ie to see the full range of electric vehicles including the award winning GOCYCLE, and become a friend on facebook www.facebook.com/greenaer
——————————————————–

My next week will be very busy again, the pre-Christmas time is soo full of different events. I only have one work-related Christmas Party and that will be just on Thursday when I should be writing the Event Guide instead of going to Parties. ;-) At the weekend there is a Krav Maga training course and a Gardiner Gospel Choir Gig, so this weekend and during the week I won’t get much of a chance to go to events. But since this week is filled with Christmas events (and I will go to some) and with protests (against Climate Change, against Berlusconi and against the budget cuts) it is not the most exciting week as far as event variety is concerned. Nevertheless, there are plenty of things to do and I will definitely be at some of the Christmas Markets.

______Competition______________

KEEPING THE BEAT – EXHIBITION&GIG – TICKETS COMPETITION
“Keeping the Beat”, a photographic exhibition and gig pays homage to the men who brought rock’n’roll to Ireland. On Fri 04 Dec a unique celebration of seminal Dublin rock will come to Kiely’s of Mount Merrion in South Dublin. The historic pub venue has hosted shows by everyone from The Animals to Thin Lizzy down the years. Now “Keeping the Beat” sees key players from the 1960s beat scene back on their old stomping ground once more and keeping the beat of the 60s alive. Photographer Kate Horgan has created a unique collection of portraits of some of the key figures of the beat scene, paying homage to the founders of the Irish music industry, iconic figures such as Henry McCullough (The People, Eire Apparent, Wings, Joe Cocker Band), Eric Bell (Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy,) and Paul Brady.
To launch this fascinating exhibition, rockers Brian Harris (The Creatures), Ditch Cassidy (The Kingbees, The News) Noel Bridgeman (Skid Row, Granny’s Intentions) Alan Dee (The Chessmen. The Light) and other special guests will perform a once-off show. Tickets (EUR 5) are available in advance from Kiely’s of Mount Merrion, Deerpark Road. The gig is on Fri 04 Nov from 22:00 and the exhibition continues until 13 December. Kate Horgan made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Event Guide. Unfortunately the winner of the draw can’t make it now and now someone is needed that can make a decision fast. If you have time tonight and want to win these tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with KIELYS2 in the Subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The fifth competiton entry I will receive will get the pair of tickets. www.katehorgan.ie www.kielys.com/gigs/

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – WINNER
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults is a monthly Magic show with Max Marshall, Nevin Cody (Secretary of the Society of Irish Magicians) and Ronan MacGabhann (Winner of the Gold Star for good spelling – Age 7 ;-) ). Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in. The winner of the ticket competition was Linda Behan. Congratulations!
Thanks to an invitation from the nice people from the Secret Castle of Magic, I did get an opportunity to go to the show as well and I had sooooo much fun! It is really a fun evening and you should definitely go to see their show. Astonishing Magic, a lot of fun and a nice measure of spookiness are the ingredients that make this show worth a visit. Check it here www.sillybilly.ie/news/42/secret-caslte-of-magic The venue for the show is Castle Dracula in Westwood Club, Clontarf Road, Dublin 3.

CENTRE FOR CREATIVE PRACTICES – TICKET COMPETITIONS
The new Centre for Creative Practices made tickets available for Lutosphere, an interesting mix of classical cello, piano and electronic music and the winner was Nordahl Ballingall. Congrats! www.cfcp.ie

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

CHRISTMAS FM BACK ON AIR
Christmas FM, a radio station that only plays Christmas songs from now until Christmas is back on air this year after last year’s success. Tune in to FM 100.3 or go to www.christmasfm.ie to listen to it and to find out more about this seasonal radio station.

DOCKLANDS CHRISTMAS MARKET – PREVIEWS!?
What do you do if you have a successful event that has a very limiting name? Well, you define a “preview” to the real thing and start the whole event two days earlier with these two “preview” days. The Docklands Authority called their Christmas Market not just Docklands Christmas Market (it would do perfectly), but they called it “The 12 Days of Christmas”. Now they seem to realise that it makes sense to run it longer than 12 days (in Germany they start on 01 Dec and end on 23 Dec) and I wouldn’t be surprised if the traders had requested more days. So the Irish solution to the “12 Days of Christmas” conundrum is to declare the Thursday and Friday (10+11 Dec) “PREVIEW” Days. So in reality it is a “14 Days of Christmas” market. Sounds perfectly fine to me. www.dublindocklands.ie/12daysofchristmas/index.jsp

SHOPS OPEN OVER CHRISTMAS
Once upon a time the day after Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day, was a holiday as well. It wasn’t as “total” as Christmas Day on which all shops close at least after approx. 11:00 because on St. Stephen’s Day there were some smaller shops (Spar, Centra etc) open again, but major shops were definitely closed. This year the major shops break with a tradition of decades and will open on St. Stephen’s Day for bargain hunters. Arnott’s, Clery’s and Brown Thomas will open on 26 Dec in the hope to generate additional sales. Next, Debenhams and River Island will most likely also open on Henry Street in Dublin.

DUBLIN WILL GROW UP
No, I don’t mean it will become a grown-up :-). Instead, Dublin City Councillors have voted for Dublin to grow higher, meaning there will be higher buildings in Dublin in certain areas. Buildings of 16 storeys or more will be allowed at Heuston and Connolly Stations and in the Docklands. Up to 16 residential storeys would be allowed in Phibsboro, Ballymun, North Fringe, Pelletstown, Cherry Orchard and the Naas Road. www.rte.ie/news/2009/1203/dublin.html

TRANSPORT NEWS
On Tues 08 Dec the Luas extension to the Point Village and the O2 (Point Theatre) will be taken into service at 15:00. Using the service will be free on that day.
On Fr 11 Dec the New Samuel Beckett Bridge will open for cars. In my opinion the bridge is a really pretty piece of architecture and if I interpret the new traffic plans correctly, then this bridge will soon be the most important bridge across the Liffey.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 5400+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

BUDGET DAY
On Wednesday 09 Dec the government will announce the Budget for 2010 to us. Without a doubt taxes will go up and services will go down and without a down EVERYBODY will find something to complain about. That’s totally normal and will not change anything. If you want to get an update on the announcements, check the websites www.irishtimes.com and www.rte.ie for comprehensive information. You can watch the Budget announcement live as well on www.rte.ie if you have nothing better to do. ;-)

BUDGET DAY PROTESTS
The Dail (Irish Parliament) will be surrounded by protesters on Wednesday. It is all a little inefficient because a) the protesters don’t know yet for certain what the budget contains and b) once it is announced the modifications after the deed will probably be quite small. So, protesting before MIGHT have a bit of an impact. Protesting on the day, after all decisions are made is maybe not the smartest approach. One grouping is already inviting to a “Reverse the Cuts Make the Rich Pay” protest at 17:00 on Wednesday (www.indymedia.ie/article/94987) another one is protesting at 13:00, before the announcement, against the “savage cuts” (www.indymedia.ie/article/94991)

INSTANT MBNA MONEY TRANSFER
I have a MBNA Credit Card and got a mail during the week telling me about an offer: “MBNA Money Transfers, delivering money to your current account. … A money transfer is when you transfer money from your MBNA Credit Card to your current account. It gives you instant access to cash and how you decide to spend the money is up to you.” is what I was told. Hmm, instant money transfer? That sounds to good to be true in the Irish banking system. And it is: A little further down, in a Step-by-Step explanation, it says “Your transfer will be processed within 5 to 7 working days.” :-( That means it will be processed by MBNA within 5-7 days, then it will take another few days until the receiving bank gets it. Instant?? I don’t think so! They probably send cheques by post or by mail pigeon and nothing has changed for years: www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?t=29461

Has it ever happened to you that someone who you met by coincidence felt that he/she is so much better and smarter than you and needed to rub it in? And did you feel like you would like to pull each finger nail out of his/her hand individually with hot prongs/pliers? I felt like that this evening and pulling out fingernails would have been on the nicer side of the treatments I was thinking of! May the karma “reward” him appropriately for his deeds! :-S

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
