| 20 November 2009 Subscribers: 5399
———————————————————————
Hi all!
Before I tell you about this week’s events, maybe you can help with this: The last 127 issues of this “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” I wrote completely on my own and while I do get mails about events, most of the event information I find by searching up to 130 web pages every week. However, with more than 5300 subscribers, the Event Guide is growing up and I would like to use some of my time to build it further and to spread the word better. Many of you are helping already by telling your friends and colleagues about it and please don’t stop doing that. A few have donated some money to make sure that the Event Guide can be sent every week to all 5300 subscribers and if you haven’t donated anything yet, please consider it. This week I am looking for a different type of help! I would like to build a little Dublin Event Guide Editorial Team that will help me to compile the newsletter every week. It is very easy work! You are not expected to work through the night with me and you are not expected to give up a huge amount of your normal life. All you would need is approximately 30 minutes on a Wednesday or on a Thursday to check a few web pages and to turn your findings in a handful of event notices (I will provide you with an easy to use template for writing it.) I would like to “outsource” event notices for museum events and for book signings etc and would love to hear from you! Some people have offered to help in the past, but I was never able to divide the work properly. Now I think I found a solution to that problem and therefore I am looking for a few helpers. Unfortunately I won’t be able to pay you money for your help, but I will be able to help you with lots of good karma, will provide lots of support, you will be prominently mentioned in the Event Guide as a helper and there will be some more perks for which I have some ideas but won’t be able to go into detail yet. ;-) If you want to be part of the Dublin Event Guide Editorial Team, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Editorial Team” in the subject line!

This week I have a list of songs for you in the “Feel Good slot”. By coincidence I came across this website that lists the Top 100 “Happy Songs”. www.happysongs.nl I think it is a great idea to provide such a list. If you want to feel good, get some of these songs and put them on your MP3 player.

Unfortunately not a single donation during last week! :-( I hope next week will be better!

Currently more than 5000 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed! You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month i.e. 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter) as a fair donation. (A once-yearly payment is better for you and me than a monthly payment.) — I know, some of you multiply 5000 x 12 and come up with huge numbers. ;-) I like your positive thinking, but over the last two years only about 2% of the subscribers have donated anything, so I am definitely not enriching myself ;-), your donation is really only used to ensure the survivability of this newsletter.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. Let me know if it is helpful, otherwise I might remove this section again to shorten the newsletter. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Not tooo many really big events this week, but there is always something to do. On Saturday there is a audio visual presentation and talk about the Camino de Santiago de Compostela and if you are as fascinated as many people about this long walk, you will be able to talk to the experts at the meeting. In the evening I will be in Lucan in the County Bar (next to the Spa Hotel) from 20:30 because we will have a fundraising event with the Elvis Tribute Band and I need to sing there. But it is one of the days when I would like to divide myself. Check out the fundraising event for Aline Barros on the same evening, that’s where I would prefer to be and maybe some of you (preferably many!) can stand in for me. On Sunday Dun Laoghaire and Dublin City will have Christmas Light Ceremonies (and even fireworks). During the week there are a number of interesting events. The best ones are the RDS lectures and the NCI Inside Debate.

______Competition______________
LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM – SUNDAY SESSION – TICKETS COMPETITION
To promote racial integration and education to as many people as possible, “Love Music Hate Racism” have organised an event featuring three live acts on Sunday 22 Nov at The Twisted Pepper (formerly Traffic) in 54 Middle Abbey St Dublin 1. Let me quote the organisers: “Whet your appetite as RADICAL PICNIC (www.myspace.com/radicalpicnic) deliver a veritable feast that will nourish the consciousness as well as the heart & soul! Sumptuously sandwiched between pulsating bass lines, searing guitar lines and thunderous rhythms comes an internationalist battle cry for the new era of counter culture, putting the soul back into Rock’n’Roll.
JOYCE & THE SONIC GYPSIES (www.myspace.com/mickjoyce), a 10 piece band, provide a unique and inspiring experience with their Western / Middle-Eastern rhythmic collaboration. While the philosophy of the songs is truly “Western” they get their soul and energy from the unmistakable and very distinctive Eastern & Southern rhythms. Is there such a thing? Come along, listen and decide!
DERMOT KENNEDY (www.myspace.com/dermotkennedy) is an 18 year-old singer/songwriter from Dublin who despite his young age has plenty of experience gigging in Dublin, in venues such as The Button Factory and Eamonn Doran’s. His main influences include Glen Hansard, David Gray and American band Bon Iver to name but a few.”
Tickets for this event are only 5 Euro and you can get them at the door, but with a bit of luck you can go to the event for free because “Love Music Hate Racism” are giving away a pair of tickets to a reader of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). To enter the competition send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with LMHR in the subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by 17:00 on Sat 21 Nov. Please only enter the competition if you are available in Sun evening.
MUSICAL YOUTH FOUNDATION – LAUNCH – TICKETS COMPETITION
On Thursday 26 Nov “The Village” on Wexford Street is the venue for a launch party fundraiser by the “Musical Youth Foundation”. Doors are at 20:00 with the performances starting at 20:30. Entertainment will be provided by five of Ireland’s most promising emerging artists: Fiach, Carosel, Iseult Sheehy, the River Valley Mountain Band and Mob Fandango.
The organiser behind all this is Chris Maher who invented and founded the brilliant Dublin City Soul Festival. The ‘Musical Youth Foundation’ has the long term goal to establish a Music Academy in Dublin City, where children under 18 can go to practise their instruments, establish bands and benefit from mentoring from industry experts including high profile artists in a safe and secure environment.
Tickets for this very promising event are only EUR 5 (plus booking fees if you book online on www.wavtickets.com or www.tickets.ie). All proceeds will go directly to the Musical Youth Foundation and the funds will be used to establish a music education programme for underprivileged children in a Dublin Community. EUR 5 for 5 bands is a very good price! Chris Maher has made a pair of tickets available for a competition. If you want to win the pair of tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with MYF in the subject line. Your entry has to be with me by 15:00 on Mon 23 Nov. www.musicalyouthfoundation.com/
KEEPING THE BEAT – EXHIBITION&GIG – TICKETS COMPETITION
“Keeping the Beat”, a photographic exhibition and gig pays homage to the men who brought rock’n’roll to Ireland. On Fri 04 Dec a unique celebration of seminal Dublin rock will come to Kiely’s of Mount Merrion in South Dublin. The historic pub venue has hosted shows by everyone from The Animals to Thin Lizzy down the years. Now “Keeping the Beat” sees key players from the 1960s beat scene back on their old stomping ground once more and keeping the beat of the 60s alive. Photographer Kate Horgan has created a unique collection of portraits of some of the key figures of the beat scene, paying homage to the founders of the Irish music industry, iconic figures such as Henry McCullough (The People, Eire Apparent, Wings, Joe Cocker Band), Eric Bell (Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy,) and Paul Brady.
To launch this fascinating exhibition, rockers Brian Harris (The Creatures), Ditch Cassidy (The Kingbees, The News) Noel Bridgeman (Skid Row, Granny’s Intentions) Alan Dee (The Chessmen. The Light) and other special guests will perform a once-off show. Tickets (EUR 5) are available in advance from Kiely’s of Mount Merrion, Deerpark Road. The gig is on Fri 04 Nov but the exhibition continues until 13 December. Kate Horgan made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Event Guide and if you want to enter the competition, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with KIELYS in the Subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tues 01 Dec. www.katehorgan.ie www.kielys.com/index.php
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
GOOD DUBLIN NEWS
Last week I suggested that you send all your Good Dublin News to me so that we can balance the news about pub and shop closures with positive news in Dublin. Unfortunately I didn’t get any suggestions. Does that mean there ARE no good news or did you just not get the time yet? To add good news to this section, please tell me the Good Dublin News you came across. Send them to dublineventguide@gmail.com.
CHRISTMAS IS COMING – THE SALES ARE STARTING
Yes, you heard right. Not AFTER Christmas as usual until recently, but BEFORE Christmas the Sales are starting. Last year the first steps were taken into this new direction and this year we can expect a significant move into this new approach. Debenhams Ireland have announced during the week that they will cut prices for many products by 25% in the run up to Christmas. www.breakingnews.ie/business/eymheyojmhsn/rss2/
SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD
“Show Racism the Red Card – Ireland”, is an Irish campaign against racism in sport and society. Using the profile of sport and professional sport players, Show Racism the Red Card exists to educate youth about racism, integration, and acceptance of others. The organisations aim is to engage the public by raising awareness about racism, deliver high quality educational programs to youth in Ireland, and to develop and maintain relationships with sport organizations; multicultural and integration-focused organizations; teachers, teachers unions, and schools. A new facebook group has been set-up by the organisation and you might want to join it
www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&gid=160409474826
The group is also looking for volunteers to help organize an intercultural Summer Camp in Ireland for about 60 children and if you are interested, call 01 8280018 or contact them via www.theredcard.ie Thanks to Aideen F. for telling me about this.
DUBLIN TRANSPORT NEWS – LUAS, NEW BRIDGE, COLLEGE GREEN
Transport in Dublin, particularly public transport, is set to improve next month with the completion of the Macken Street Bridge, and the opening of the Luas extension to the docklands with stops at George’s Dock, Mayor Square, Spencer Dock and The Point. The new Macken Street, or “Samuel Beckett”, bridge will open to sightseers on 10 Dec and to motorists on 11 Dec. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1118/breaking66.htm
Other news announce that the car ban at College Green will be temporarily lifted in the evenings to allow private cars pass through to the O’Connell Street area during peak evening hours, to cover the Christmas shopping period and January sales. Dublin City councillors voted earlier this month to suspend the ban on private cars passing through the area during peak evening hours for two months until 15 Jan. Only introduced in August, it seems that the car ban has caused more bad than good.
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1118/breaking26.htm
DUBLIN PARKING NEWS – FREE PARKING BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Yes, you read correctly, Dublin City will be – “suffering” from an amazing, unexpected and totally untypical attack of generosity – offering free parking for Dublin shoppers on 1380 car parks in the City Centre. Make sure that you consult the map because areas that you would expect to be included, for example Merrion Square, are NOT included. And there is another odd issue: Under the scheme, on-street parking spaces will be free from 14:00 every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 27 December. Some people interpret that as parking being free from 14:00 on Thursday and then the whole day of Fri, Sat and Sun. But I have my doubts! There are indications that it actually means that on each of these 4 days you can park for free AFTER 14:00. I guess the purpose is to stop people working in the shops in the City Centre from parking there for free for the whole day, but the “from 14:00” limit still appears strange. I can so imagine the traffic chaos in the City Centre.
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1119/breaking30.htm
A full map of where the designated free parking spaces are located can be viewed here

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )
Three new companies contacted me and I plan to introduce them over the next three weeks starting in the next issue of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

BENEFIT NIGHT for ALINE BARROS – FUNDRAISER
Aline Barros is a lovely 27 year old Brazilian girl who was a victim of a hit and run accident while cycling to work on 22 July 2008. Despite being paralysed from the waist down, Aline has the strong believe and is convinced that she will walk again. Aline has no income and her court case is experiencing further delays. For that reason her friends are organising a fundraising night so that Aline can pay for her rent, cost of living and further treatment. The event is taking place on Sat 21 November from 21:00 in the Kobra Bar (RIO’s), 26/27 Lwr Lesson St, Dublin 2. Admission is obviously not free, but is EUR 10. Her friends have offered free tickets for a competition, but in this case I have decided not to use/take the free tickets for a competition. I met Aline last year and had a chat with her and giving 5 free tickets away (as was offered) feels like taking money away from her. This panel discussion will focus on how sport strongly influenced regional and local identity in Ireland and the role of the regional press in reinforcing cultural identity through sports coverage.

THE FRENCH DIDN’T CHEAT + IRELAND WASN’T ROBBED – FOOTBALL
This might get me into hot water, but, hey, I like Jacuzzis! :-) I am amazed by the outrage and by the absolutely shocking reactions in Ireland to the game on Wednesday! Let me clarify from the beginning that I think the Irish team was the better team on Wed and that I think that the result was NOT a fair result. BUT…it was a) nearly all was within the rules or at least was condoned by the non action of the referee, b) no French person robbed anything from any Irish person (a Swedish person+FIFA rules have to take some blame though) and c) Thierry Henry didn’t cheat (to deprive of something valuable by the use of deceit or fraud), he did something (most likely by instinctive reaction) that is against the rules, then admitted to it, but was not heard. So, first of all please stop accusing anything and anybody French of robbing or cheating! You might want to accuse Henry, but nobody else and certainly not the French nation was involved. Your French (or Swedish) colleague across the corridor has had absolutely NO involvement. And then let’s have a quick look at the situation: The Irish team played BADLY throughout most of the qualification games and after the play-off on Sunday hardly anybody expected realistically that there was much of a chance. To everybody’s surprise and totally against their natural behaviour, the Irish team played very well on Wed. I am not sure if ONE game should be enough to qualify for the World Cup but that’s the rules. Towards the end of the game Thierry Henry used his hand to keep the ball from leaving the football field. He shouldn’t have done that and it is against the rules. Now it wasn’t that clear from all positions. It took three different angles, a super-zoom and a slow motion for me to see for certain what had happened and I would claim that he instinctively reacted (not with intent) after the ball went towards his hand in the first place. The fact that he used his hand didn’t cause the goal, but enabled him to play the ball to someone else who shot the goal. None of the three (Swedish! not French!) referees saw the hand was part of it which can definitely happen in a fast and hectic sequence of events. Henry told the referee that he used his hand, but the referee told him that it was not the players job to decide. Football does NOT allow for video replays but gives the referee all power to decide there and then. So, Henry didn’t stick to the rules, but after making a mistake he owned up to it and wasn’t heard. The Swedish referee decided in his wisdom to ignore that interjection after he probably hadn’t seen the involvement of the hand. After he had made the decision this is the decision that stands and there is no route in the rules that allows a change. So while the rules are insufficient and adequate, all involved seemed to have acted honestly and honourably. The RULES are wrong (there should be video replays), but that is neither the fault of the Irish, the French or the Swedish participants in the game.
If it had been the other way around, I wouldn’t be surprised if people in Ireland would shrug their shoulders and say “Tough luck! Terrible, yes, but them’s the rules.” Repeating the game is an option, but I suggest then that all other games that have been decided by a wrong decision of a referee in the last few years should be repeated as well. – And for next time I suggest that the Irish team starts playing well from the BEGINNING instead of leaving it to the last game! :-S
The part that worries me about the outrage I read on facebook and elsewhere is that if we were slightly less civilised than we are, you would find people now burning down French shops or throw stones through windows of French companies. Clearly there is absolutely NO justification for that.
Sure, it wasn’t fair, but fairness is not necessarily the main feature of sport or is it? Doping anybody? Or did you see the vicious wrestling matches between the French and Irish players during the match? This can’t be called “fair” either! Or is the rule “It is fair if it helps us but not if it helps the others?”

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
