Hi all!
What a lovely weekend this was! I know it is already long gone and the weather since hasn’t been great, but last weekend was really nice, wasn’t it? If you miss the sun, just remember how you enjoyed it last week and realise that there will be more days like that again. When? Hmmm, ok, you DO realise that you are in Ireland, don’t you? :-P
I didn’t see much of the sun last week because I was inside of the D4 Hotel for three (in my case actually four) days at the “Breakthrough to Success” seminars. Some of you did come to the seminar. Some I met, others I knew about but because I don’t know you personally, I wasn’t able to identify you among the 400 people. I have no exact idea how many people from the Dublin Event Guide Community were there, but – to be honest – I had hoped for more. I had a great time there and met a huge amount of really nice people. Despite the fact that I was at the same event a number of times by now, I still get something out of it and definitely recommend it. A new date has not been set yet, but I expect that it will be back in about 6 months or so in case you are interested and missed it this time. www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324
This week’s Event Guide will reach you later than I would prefer, but last night – just when I settled down and started working on it – my day job called me to duty because we had a problem with a connection to a customer (my day job is in telecommunications). So I had to work for another 3 hours or so, which then has a ripple effect in the morning and delays the completion of this newsletter. Apologies if it didn’t make it in time for your usual read. I hope you will forgive me. ;-)
For this week’s “Feel Good” Slot, I came across a You Tube video about Gratitude. Gratitude is thankfulness or appreciation for positive things that happen to you. You think it is a little odd to think that the “attitude of gratitude” could make you feel better? Well, there are even studies that show that gratitude can enhance your emotional wellbeing! Try it out! For the coming week start your day by saying thanks to your creator/god/the universe for something good that happened the day before or will happen that day and if you don’t feel better by the end of the week, you will get your money back. ;-) have a look at this www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jF6u4GJQ-U
Last week I said that it seemed to me that the Oktoberfest on George’s Dock was not taking place this year and I am happy to say that I was wrong www.oktoberfest-dublin.com/index.htm! Thanks to Petra L and Miriam A. In addition I mentioned the Festival of World Food which took place in Marlay Park last year and Petra L is telling me that it unfortunately got cancelled. It was planned for 03+04 October and it is not on the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown events list anymore. I can’t find a press release or similar anywhere that states that it is cancelled, but Petra works in the food business and therefore obviously found out first.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–
This weekend will be busy again. On Saturday I will start the day with a brief visit to www.kravmagaireland.com, because we will have a Refresher Class for people that have trained with us before. (The class was booked out within 2 days from announcing it. :-O) After that I plan to go to the BizCamp Dublin to listen to some talks and later we will sing at a wedding with the Graceland Gospel Choir in Leixlip. Then back to Dublin and either a bit more of BizCamp or of the Krav Maga class.
On Sunday I can take it easy and I am looking forward to it!! In the evening I will be back at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass and that should be good too.
On Monday the Climate Change Wake-up Call and the Bluegrass gig sound interesting. On Tuesday I might go to the EYP event, not to learn about Twitter, but to see what they teach. (You can get me on www.twitter.com/JoergSt already.) On Thursday I will probably go to the Open Mic event in the Lucan County Bar to support Ian Smith and on Friday I will go for a HUGE dose of Culture during Culture Night!
Busy week! Bring it on!!! :-)

DUBLINBIKES – STATUS UPDATES
Yes, the Dublin Bikes Scheme has been launched successfully last Sunday. Surprisingly all went to plan and even the vandals have delivered what they were expected by damaging the first few bikes. But seriously, it seems it is a great success and the bikes are getting around. If you are a Dublin Bikes subscriber and would like to know where there are bikes available, you can go to dublinbikes.mobi to see exactly how many bikes are at which location. If you have not subscribed yet, you can do that on www.dublinbikes.ie
LUAS VS DUBLIN BUS – ACCIDENT
Most likely you have heard about this first and quite serious collision between a Luas and a Bus. Spookily (at some point) the story went that it happened on the 16th, involved the No. 16 bus and there were 16 people injured. But in the meantime the number of injured people grew to 21. It is not clear who’s fault it was, but it seems that one of the two went through a red light … and CIE says it was not the bus driver. Here is more about the accident www.rte.ie/news/2009/0917/luas.html , but the reason for mentioning it in this category is because I found some interesting pictures here unreal.ie/forum/thread/5068
DUBLIN NEWS REEL – VIDEO NEWS FROM LAST WEEK
Nick Carosello is doing a great job reporting back from the different events that take place throughout Dublin.
Last week it was a video of the Smithfield Horse Market. The link did work for me, but later stopped working, so here is a new working link to the video about the Smithfield Horse Market: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWQnmu8K-IQ
This week Nick saw the Classic Beatles performing at the Septemberfest: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcVjiTlXdgI
He was at the 90th Liffey Swim: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1BuJ0oiNF0
And – by coincidence – he was in O’Connell Street when the LUAS crashed into the Bus: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pogZaFir3X8
Thanks Nick for all the great videos!
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )
If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

OPEN SOURCE BARCAMP – CALLING ALL IT TECHIES
If you have no idea what “Open Source” means, then this event might not be the right one for you. (“Open Source” describes software that is not developed by commercial companies, but by a wide community of people that are interested and that often make their time and services available for free to develop the software and distribute it for free.) If you knew all that and can define it a lot better than me, then you should go to the next OSSBarcamp. After the success of the March event, on Sat 19 Sept the next OSSBarcamp will take place from 09:30 in DIT Kevin Street. OSSBarcamp is a free one day technical event focusing on Open Source Software. There will be three rooms with talks about programming, Linux and Free Software. There are presentations about CouchDB, Gnome, Drupal, Ubuntu, Python, Documentation, Perl, Using Free Sofware at home, your work and in your communities. Find out more information and register on the website www.ossbarcamp.com/. Thanks Jaime H for letting me know.

It is relatively pricey, but you might be interested. I will not take part, but if YOU are taking part and are looking for support in your quest to win the title and the qualification to represent Ireland at the World City Chase, let me know! NO TO CUTS – PROTEST MARCH
After last week’s non-party protest march against NAMA, this week the politically left organisations, Unions, Socialists, Sinn Fein and others are protesting against ALL “cuts and bailouts”. Having seen some reports of last weeks protest march, which was unfortunately hi-jacked by Sinn Fein, I would expect that you will see “No to Lisbon” posters and maybe even “No to everything and everybody”. The protest starts at 13:00 at the Garden of Remembrance and will continue with a march to the Dail, so effects on traffic are to be expected. www.indymedia.ie/article/93620
FRINGE FESTIVAL
The 15th Dublin Fringe Festival will continue until 20 Sept. The 2 weeks are packed with events and while most of them are not free, there are a few free events hidden in the long list of events. If you hear the name “Absolut Fringe Fest” it refers to the main sponsor, which is Absolut Vodka and if you are a Fringe Fest fan you can check the website for all events www.fringefest.com. There is no easy list to find the free events, so you have to trawl through the list of 0-10 Euro events to find the free ones.
MIND THE GAP – FRINGE FESTIVAL
Mind The Gap is a collaborative public art project initiated by Michelle Browne to work with artists, designers, architects and planners to look at open spaces in the city and consider new uses for them. So, it is an event with a lot of subevents. ;-) Let me quote the explanation from the Mind the Gap team: “Over the course of two months the group have explored areas across Dublin city considering how we can re-imagine our civic society. Throughout Absolut Fringe we will present a range of interventions that will inform and delight. The project is based at thisisnotashop on Benburb Street Dublin 7 where you can get information and contribute to our exhibition of ideas for the city.
# 18 Sept at 18:30: Operetta – A lone performer looks out over the city and sings a lament to its citizens. Mind The Gap presents a solo operatic performance on
Foster Place of arias that highlight the current plight of the city and its uncertain future.
# 19 Sept at 08:00-11:00 Don’t Quote Me – Projected on the outside of the iconic Screen cinema, Mind The Gap looks to the silver screen to investigate Dublin’s current dilemmas. The city, planning, corruption, and the fall of a nation are explored through the history of cinema.
# 19 Sept at 12:00-15:00: Flower Show – Following from the tradition of competitive window box competitions in the Smithfield area, Mind The Gap offer you the chance to come to Smithfield Plaza and design your own flower box display to be adjudicated
by Lord Ross of Birr Castle, Father to Lord Oxmantown. Take this opportunity to bring plant life to the plaza.
# 20 Sept at 15:00: The Big Freeze – Goethe famously said “architecture is frozen music.” Taking inspiration from the architecture of Smithfield Plaza, a brass band will perform The Ride of The Valkyries by Wagner. This collaborative performance highlights the peaks and troughs of Smithfield Square as a public space.
# Ongoing event/installation: Public Seating – Mind the Gap will provide alternative public seating in the city for visitors and commuters over the course of
Absolut Fringe. Seating will be provided on Aungier Street, Hawkins Street and other city centre locations
# Ongoing event/installation: Sunken Site – Hammond Lane – A series of visual proposals will be presented for an unused site on Hammond Lane and Church
Street. A collection of proposals taken from an open call from designers and architects
explore the possibilities of the disused spaces in the city.
# Ongoing event/installation: Thisisnotashop – The hub of the Mind The Gap operation, the gallery will host an exhibition of ideas for the city. Inspired by the urban myth that Santiago Calatrava designed the James Joyce bridge on the back of a napkin, we invite you, the viewer, to present your ideas for the city of an ever-expanding array of napkins. The gallery will also host The Smithfield Archive presenting the history of the area and unrealised proposals for its regeneration.
A complete list of all events AND some possible surprise events will be listed here: www.Mindthegapdublincity.blogspot.com

A Global Yoga Mala for Peace is taking place in St. Stephen’s Green and everybody is welcome. The event is free, but donations are welcome and the Dublin event is organised by Siobhan Murphy, Tahnee Fournier, Caragh Egan and Anna Fidz. On Sun 20 Sept from 14:00-16:00 a yoga practice and deep relaxation (108 minutes) led by the organisers and set to live music will take place.
Inspired by Shiva Rea, the purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a “mala around the earth” through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on 20 September. This is the autumn equinox and the yoga world’s offering to bring more awareness to the UN International Peace Day.

GLOBAL CLIMATE WAKE-UP CALL
Avaaz is an independent, not-for-profit global campaigning organization that works to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform global decision-making. (Avaaz means “voice” in many languages.) Avaaz receives no money from governments or corporations, and is staffed by a global team based in Ottawa, London, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Buenos Aires, and Geneva. On Mon 21 Sept, Avaaz is asking you to make your opinion known about climate change by going out and taking part in a giant worldwide flash-mob. A flash-mob is a fun, peaceful demonstration in which participants assemble suddenly in a public place, blending in with the crowd, perform an unusual action simultaneously for a few minutes, and then quickly disperse. They will be mostly self-organising, so should be easy for everyone involved.
The default time for the wake-up events will be 12:18 on 21 Sept, standing for the 18th day of the 12th month (the final day of the vital UN climate conference in Copenhagen, the deadline for a new climate treaty). Thousands of simultaneous climate wake-up call flash mobs are intended to focus global attention on the climate crisis.
In Dublin the meeting time is the suggested time of 12:18 and the location the North Earl Street junction with O’Connell St, Dublin, that is near the spire and at or close to the James Joyce statue. You are asked to wear something red! More information is here: www.avaaz.org/en/sept21_rsvp/?id=132856 (Thanks to Saundra S. for alerting me to this event!)

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK
It was once just a Car Free Day, which traditionally meant absolutely nothing in Ireland, while other countries offered, for example, discounted public transport prices etc. Now the Car Free Day has been extended to the European Mobility Week (16 Sept – 22 Sept) with the car free day as a culmination of the week’s activities. But apart from the launch of the Dublin Bikes scheme, which was seemingly (and unnecessarily) delayed to coincide with the Mobility Week most of us have not felt any difference, I guess. Now, on Car Free Day (Tues 22 Sept) suddenly all activities will be let loose: On Tues 22 Sept Merrion Square West will be closed to traffic from 19:00-19:00 and “a number of events will take place throughout the day in Merrion Square to increase awareness of non-motorised means of transport”. Also on Tues 22 Sept, from 08:00-18:00 a section of the Old Blessington Rd in Tallaght will be closed at the junction with Belgard Square East to facilitate events in conjunction with European Mobility Week.
You would like to know what exactly is taking place on Merrion Square? Well, wouldn’t we all like to know that!?!? But you forgot that it is Dublin City organising the event! This means that it will be well organised – by an external event management company – but nobody is allowed to find out about it. Grrrr! Do I sound frustrated? I AM!
At least South Dublin County Council (Tallaght) know how to let people know: roads.southdublin.ie/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=299&Itemid=62 but it just makes it even more shocking that Dublin County Council can’t get their act together.
EYP – TWEET MY WORLD
EYP (European Young Professionals) is inviting to an event where you can learn everything about Twitter. On Tues 22 Sept from 19:30-22:30, the Royal SAS Hotel in Golden Lane, Dublin 8 is the location where you will be taught in 3 workshops all you need to know. I have to admit that Twitter is so trivial that I don’t understand why people don’t just try it out. You can’t do much wrong! But if you prefer to be taken by the hand and instructed on your path, then the workshops “Tweet-my-friends”, “Tweet-my-job” and “Tweet-my-company” will tell you all the tricks and inside knowledge. And as usual the EYP event is free. www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=130085272170

The Science Gallery was a big influence when the idea to Playhouse was born and you now can find out more about the background to the project on Friday 25th September at the PLAYING WITH THE HOUSE talk by Brian Fallon, founder of Daft.ie and member of the Science Gallery Leonardo Group, in Science Gallery at 18:00. This is a free event but pre-booking is essential on www.sciencegallery.com/events
ARTHUR’S DAY
Today is “Arthur’s Day”. Why on that day is not totally clear to me. I guess it is the 250th anniversary of Arthur Guinness starting his business, but what happened on 24 Sept 1759 is not completely clear to me. I am not impressed with the Guinness’ marketing stunts, by the way. But their marketing seems to work, and after tall they are in the business to make money. But collecting signatures as a condition to give a donation to a charity? The signatures did do nothing and Guinness doesn’t need my signature to give money to their own charity, so I don’t get it! You were meant to believe that your signature is important, but to me that is nearly a condescending way of treating customers. Then the campaign on facebook to have Arthur’s Day as a public holiday. It smells a lot like a marketing stunt, don’t you think?! And “Arthur’s Day” itself isn’t as impressive as I was hoping it would be when I heard first about it. Yes, concerts are a good thing and lots of them will take place on 24 Sept, but considering how much money people leave with Guinness every day, it would have been great if Guinness would have given something back to the customers by providing a free big gig. Instead all concerts cost money. A bit disappointing, I think. The only consolation is that the concerts at least seem somewhat discounted!
OPEN MIC NIGHT – LUCAN COUNTY BAR
Ian Smith, a talented guitar player and friend of mine, is in the process of setting up a new Open Mic event in the West of Dublin. The first night is on Thurs 24 Sept. from 20:00 in the Lucan County Bar (1st floor). The County Bar is on the grounds of the Lucan Spa Hotel on the N4. Admission is free and there are spot prizes for participants. All types of music welcome and both musicians and listeners are very much invited to come along/participate. And there is a taxi company in the building, in case you had a few drinks. ;-) www.lucanspahotel.ie/ENG/map.html
REGULAR THURSDAY EVENTS:
* The Bionic Rats play live Reggae and Ska every Thursday in Turk’s Head from 22:00. Admission is free. www.turkshead.ie
———Friday————————
CULTURE NIGHT
On Friday 25 Sept is Culture Night. From 17:00 until late (some locations are open until midnight!) there are hundreds of different events and places to visit. It is a Museum Night combined with lots more. If you are anywhere near Dublin, I strongly recommend that you have a look at the programme on www.culturenight.ie to see what interests you. You can download the full programme here culturenight.ie/docs/Programme2009.pdf or check on the website to see what is happening in the different parts of the City Centre. Free Culture Night buses will help you to get around: www.culturenight.ie/listing.asp?id=16m so there is no excuse anymore. I will definitely make the most of this night.
I would recommend that you particularly pick locations to visit that are normally not free because the rest you can see at any time throughout the year, but the non-free ones you might not see otherwise. Don’t forget either to check pages 40-43 in the full programme!
CULTURE NIGHT: FOAM PARTY
The Science Gallery is inviting to a Foam Party during Culture Night to coincide with their Bubble Exhibition and they are inviting here: “We’ve got bubbles! We’ve got DJ iRate! We’ve got fun prize give aways! We’ll have a member’s only VIP lounge and a mystery bubble room! So make sure to make Science Gallery an essential stop on your cultured trek around the capital. If you’re doing it by bike don’t forget there is a dublinbikes stand right outside Science Gallery… www.sciencegallery.ie” The party will be from 12:00-23:00, so the Science Gallery is starting early! Great! Gives you more time to take all in! ;-)

MONEY AND COLOUR?
What is it with rich men (or formerly rich men) and colour? During the week I saw developer Sean Dunne in his D4 hotel (he paid EUR 380 mio for the hotel and adjacent site) and he had one of these baby blue sweaters on. Something along these lines: www.designerclothesonline.co.uk/images/Spring%20Collection%202008_0042_IMG_5045.jpg Maybe this is the way you girls want us to dress, but I can’t help but notice that only people with money wear baby blue and pink (static.my-wardrobe.com/images/products/5/8/582569/t_582569.jpg). Does the money interfere with your ability to recognise appropriate colours or am I outing myself as a fashion disaster because I am not going for pink and baby blue? Let me know what you think! (Mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Fashion” in Subject.) :-)
Ok, I do admit that I have some colour challenges too in my wardrobe and I think I even have a light blue jumper (not baby blue!!). ;-) But, hey, I am German so weird patterns and strong colours are to be expected. :-) But pink or baby blue jumpers or dress shirts? No way!

The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
