Hi all!

Another good week is coming to an end, but the weekend is looking good. I can’t promise summer weather, but at least there are a number of interesting events. Last weekend I was at the Temple Bar Circus Festival and met a few friends that I hadn’t seen for a while, which was really nice. On Tuesday I had the opportunity – thanks to Ireland’s Master-Blogger and Master-Twitterer (I gave him that title just now :-) ) Darragh Doyle (darraghdoyle.blogspot.com/) and the team from Street Performance World Championship – to see some of the best Street Performance Acts at a showcase for enterprises. Imagine, you (or your company) can book the great performers that you saw in Merrion Square for your company event! Charlie Caper was doing impressive tricks and the Space Cowboy left a trail of destruction in the cutlery drawer by bending spoons and forks. Amazing stuff!! After the event I was interviewed by Peter Donegan. And what can I say, it was fun. ;-) I have to explain a little more here because you might not YET have heard about Peter. He is a qualified and experienced horticulturist with more titles/awards than fit on a business card. ;-) Peter is very passionate about gardening, but he does realise that horticulture can be a little boring if you are not into it. So in addition to the gardening and “outdoors-related” topics he adds colour and variety to his landscaping weblog by interviewing people he encounters and he does a brilliant job at it in a unique and funny way. He is a really nice guy and no matter if you get him to help you with your garden or if you just enjoy his blog, you will encounter a brilliant combination of professionalism and fun. Yesterdays “Bord Snip” (I find that name so stupid!) report left quite a number of worried people in the public and civil sector. And I am sure a number of you in the private sector have sleepless nights as well. This weekend you will have to do your own thing without me. ;-) Some of you know that I sing in the backing choir of an Elvis Tribute Band and we will be on the Miriam O’Callaghan Show on RTE1 (TV) on Saturday night (at the very end of the show), so from 14:00 we will be in RTE until the show is over. A long day in RTE. So let me tell you what I would do if I had the time. On Saturday morning I would (maybe will) go to the Blackhorse Flea Market (Regular Events). In the afternoon and I would go to the Rose Festival, I was there last year and learned a lot about (blast I forgot the name of the plant), but apart from that had a VERY good time. In the later afternoon and evening Bray would be the place for me. On Sunday maybe daytime in St. Anne’s Park again and evening in Bray, definitely to catch the Fireworks. I love Fireworks and in Bray it has been impressive for the last two years!

DUBLIN STILL MOST EXPENSIVE PLACE
According to a study by consulting firm, Mercer, Dublin is still the most expensive country for fast food. The survey considers March 2008 until March 2009 and compares the prices of fast food in the different countries. The most expensive places are Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, Athens, Brussels and Rome. The least expensive places are Prague, Warsaw and Johannesburg.

BORDERS BOOK SHOP – CLOSING DOWN RUSH
Last week I found out through a Twitter Message, that the Borders Book Shop in Blanchardstown, the only shop in Ireland of that international chain, was to close down and that there was a 50% discount on everything!! On Wednesday I made my way to Blanchardstown after work and arrived at 18:50 to find out that the shop didn’t let any new customers in anymore, because the queue in the shop at the check-out was more than 2 hours long. :-O Normally the shop is open until 21:00, but they had to close at 18:30 and had extra hired two security guards and even crowd control barriers were at hand. It seems that at 09:00 the queue outside the job was nearly endless. Borders was open less than three years and while a great shop, the few times I was there it was never too busy, but a discussion on boards.ie (www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055619961) suggests differently. Unfortunately I didn’t get any books at this closing down sale, but it seems to me that there is a market niche: A discount book shop could do quite well in Dublin! ;-)

ULSTER BANK THEATRE FESTIVAL – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Rosario told me that the Ulster Bank Theatre Festival offer free tickets (up to 3 different shows) to people who volunteer some hours of their time to help with the events preparations. Application forms can be found at www.dublintheatrefestival.com/employment/default.asp?cat=vol&m=u

FOCUS IRELAND FUNDRAISING TRIATHLON – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Focus Ireland is looking for 130 volunteers for their Fundraising Triathlon on Sun 02 August 2009. I did volunteer there last year and am thinking about doing it again this year if I find the time. It is not long to the day, so if you are interested to volunteer, please contact them soon. Volunteers don’t need to have any triathlon/sports experience but will play a key role in helping out with registration, directions and event safety by warning general passers by that there is a race in progress and by issuing directions to event participants.
Volunteers are needed from 06:00-15:00 (yes, it is VERY early, but Focus Ireland say  that “you will be greeted with coffee/tea and a big welcome on arrival”). Every volunteer will be provided with a Triathlon t-shirt, goodie bag, free car parking and an invitation to the BBQ after the race. They also need about 20 volunteers to help setting up the Triathlon area in Grand Canal Square on Saturday 01 August. XPRESSO ARTS FESTIVAL
From 15-18 July the Xpresso Arts Festival will take place in the basement of the Abbey Presbyterian Church on Parnell Square (next to the Writer’s Museum). Every evening for 4 days there will be performances from 19:00-22:00. The organisers describe this Festival like this: “The Xpresso Arts Festival is about art, music and us. It has no pretensions about being the biggest and best festival there is. Instead, it strives to be merely what it is: a space for expressing old and new thoughts in a myriad of different ways. Song, paint, melody and movement are all part of the festival. ROSE FESTIVAL – ST ANNE’S PARK, RAHENY
Going by the name you would think that this is a festival for gardening enthusiasts only, but that is not the case. The Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is a great family festival and with music, dance, crafts and arts there is something to do even if you are not a keen gardener. St. Anne’s park has a beautiful Rose Garden and the International Rose Trials do take place on the Friday before the Festival, but this is only ONE aspect of the whole festival. Access to the park is free and the festival runs on Sat 18 July from 10:30-18:00 and on Sun 19 July as well from 10:30-18:00. St. Anne’s Park is in Raheny on your way from Fairview to Howth. You can take the bus to Howth, just ask the driver to let you out near St. Anne’s Park, if you have never been there.

BRAY SUMMER FEST
The Bray Summer Festival continues! On Sunday there will be a sparkling finale (which is not the finale yet) with a fireworks display at 23:00. But the festival continues for another while. Next week there will be a Air Display and then on 09 Aug another fireworks display will be there to amaze you. :-) As I said last week, the festival is well planned and considering that Bray is not the biggest metropolis, the Summer Festival has a hugely impressive programme. PAUL FURNEAUX – ARTIST WORKSHOPS & TALK
The Graphic Studio Gallery invites to a series of events as part of their international residency with Scottish artist Paul Furneaux. As part of St Anne’s Rose Festival on 18 and 19 July 2009, Furneaux will give daily Japanese woodblock demonstrations in Studio 1 at the Red Stables in St. Anne’s Park from 12:00-16:00, that invite people to look at woodblock print making at work and experiment with some techniques for themselves. CHILDREN’S PUPPET SHOW – CITY CENTRE
The Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) is bringing free entertainment for kids to the city this Summer with free Puppet Shows for children as part of its BIDs for KIDs Summer Programme. Taking place in Arnotts, Henry Street, and the Powerscourt Shopping Centre every weekend in July, the Dublin City BID is providing a fun and interesting way for kids and families to spend a few hours in the city this July.
Renowned puppeteer Conor Lambert will entertain and create drama with his unique (Dublin) adaptation of ‘Punch & Judy’. Follow a very naughty Mr.Punch as he is left with the task of minding the house while Judy gets busy with other important chores. Mr. Punch’s inability to take on the simplest of chores leads to hilarious consequences involving the Gardai!
With three shows each day, running for 45 minutes each, Mr Punch will actively encourage children to get involved as he goes about his chores.

IRISH HOSPICE FOUNDATION – DUBLIN – PARIS CYCLE
On Sun 19 July the Irish Hospice Foundation Dublin-Paris Cycle takes place. At 08:00 on Sun 105 cyclists will depart from UCD and travel approx 100km through Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Killiney, Enniskerry, Roundwood and take the coast road through Wicklow town and onto Gorey.

CHILDRENS WORKSHOPS – PHOENIX PARK VISITOR CENTRE
Until December 2009 an impressive programme of workshops for children will be provided in Phoenix Park every Sunday from 10:30-12:30. Participation is free. “The Google Book Settlement and the Future of Digital Publishing” is the title of an information seminar, presented by Poetry Ireland. This event is primarily for and in the interest of writers and poets, but the event is open to all. LAZY BAND – BEWLEY’S CAFÉ THEATRE
It was confirmed to me that this event is still taking place and a number of people commented in a very positive way. Unfortunately I haven’t experienced it myself yet, but it seems that it is an event worth recommending.
A new event has been happening on Monday nights (every Monday night) in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, 78 Grafton Street. The recently-formed music collective called the ‘Lazy Band’ is playing roots, trad and folk songs from Ireland, England, America and anything else they like. Admission is free and the bar serves during the show. Some people order up pizzas from downstairs. Laid-back atmosphere, unplugged and informal, and worth a visit! The event starts at 20:00 and goes until 22:00.

NORTHSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009
On Tues 21 July the Northside Music Festival 2009, which will continue until 16 August, will take of. This is the 3rd year of the Festival and it offers a programme of diverse music events across North Dublin. At 9 different events a variety of bands and performers will provide free entertainment. BUSINESS HOTEL ROOMS TURNED INTO BEDSITS
This story is not THAT odd. It actually makes a lot of sense to turn a property in what can be sold/let the easiest. The story is about a developer in Tallaght turning his buildings which were originally built as a 186-bed and 48-bed hotels into bedsits for approx. EUR 600.
But what did surprise me was the sentence that explains that the hotel rooms have been converted into bedsits “through the addition of a kettle and a microwave”. MANY PRICES ARE DROPPING BUT BEWARE OF THE GOVERNMENT
So prices in the private sector are in general dropping. Not drastically and not in all areas, but there is stagnation or a downward trend. Only one category of areas is completely excluded: Wherever the civil sector directly or indirectly controls the service provided, the prices are still rising. You could interpret that as (intended) stealth taxes OR the public sector really lives on a different planet and just doesn’t get it that the economic situation has changed. My bet is on the latter. Odd!!!

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.

BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby.
