Hi all!

With the weather we had for most of last week, who can complain about living in Dublin? ;-) Well, incredibly I already heard people complaining about it being much to hot. Hot? Hmmm, it was just about 20 degrees. Hot starts above 30! MAYBE it is just down to the fact that no matter how the weather is, there will be something we have to say about it. And there are only two options: Complaints or praise. No matter which option you choose, I just LOVE the sun and the higher temperatures and I wish it lasted for another few months. If the sky + the sun smile, I will just join in! For no particular reason at all!

A little downer is the fact that I have hurt my back (Lower back pain – It happens to me every now and then.) by just bending down last weekend and therefore I am in some pain (it was “a lot of” but it got better already) when sitting down. So sitting at a desk for 12+ hours to write this Event Guide is not the recommended behaviour and I can’t promise that I will be able to do it. If I can’t I will do as much as possible and at the end of this newsletter I will state if I got finished or had to abandon prematurely. Let’s hope all will go well and the pain will not be too strong. On a side note: The praised Osteopath that I tried to ring unfortunately never rang back, so no treatment for me. The good practitioners are just too busy. :-o

After the interview on RTE Radio 1’s “Frugal Household”, this week I was contacted by Phantom 105.2 and if all works out they might have me for a chat during the week on the Phantom Daily show (15:00-17:00) with Simon Maher. I don’t know yet when, though. It most likely will be in Monday at 15:40, but if you want to know for certain, I will try to remember to post the time and date on Twitter. You can find me on www.twitter.com by searching for JoergSt. I am an occasional-only twitter user, but for notifications like that it is very useful. :-)

On Wednesday night during the Thunderstorm I thought of the people that are afraid of lightning and of thunder and that an event like that must feel like all is coming to an end. And maybe not through a normal thunderstorm, but life has sometimes unexpected surprises for us. So today the question is for you: “If Today were the last day of your life what would you be doing today? Who would you spend time with, who would you contact and what would you tell them and what passion would you pursue? Listen to the Nickelback song (www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0Ia07pu704) and think about what you would do and say….and then just do it!

And some welcome supporter/sponsor news: The Pena Flamenca El Indalo (www.flamencoindalo.com) a group that will promote and support Flamenco in Ireland has joined the exclusive set of Dublin Event Guide Sponsors and their contribution is very much appreciated. FlamencoIndalo will officially launch on 18 July and on 19 July they are inviting to a Flamenco Performance in the Button Factory in Temple Bar. Concha Jareño & Ensemble will perform “Simplemente Flamenco” and you can find more detail about this concert (EUR 22) here: www.flamencoindalo.com/en/events/details/1-conchajareno

More than 4400 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have ever spent any money are ALL listed above. They have all realised that going to free events saves a LOT of money AND is good fun. And have decided that contributing to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free) is cool. ;-)  If you don’t know how much a fair amount is, think that way: 1 Euro per month (which is just 25 cent per newsletter) is not a lot, but it would help hugely with the production and the cost for this newsletter. If 1 Euro per month is a lot to you, then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you! For the rest, it would be great if I could count on your 12 Euro per year!! Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation.
This Event Guide is a hobby and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations! I spend more than 25 hours per week (for some people that is a half-day job!) on writing and researching it.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend seems to be made for children. The majority of events is more for the younger age groups than for grown ups, but there are still things to find for us. ;-) On Saturday I will go to the Summer Edition 2009 in Filmbase and then skip over to the Temple Bar Food Market where I have not been for a long long time. On Sunday I can recommend the Crafty Market, but I have been there before and will go back again in a few weeks time. If I had children I would go to the Farmleigh Fitness Festival or the Teddy Bears Picnic, but unless I borrow some children ;-) I would probably look odd at the Teddy Bears Picnic. :-P On Tuesday the Colm O’Regan Comedy performance looks promising and on Thursday the Temple Bar Circus Festival will start, which will keep us busy next weekend…unless you go to Oxygen, I guess.

DUBLIN ON A SHOESTRING – BOOK COMPETITION
“Dublin on a Shoestring” is the latest version of this guidebook for cost conscious visitors AND inhabitants of Dublin. The book has been completely re-written and the newest issue was edited by Katherine Farmar and Ben Murnane. It includes categories dealing with Must see places; great value pubs, clubs and venues; eating out; shopping; free stuff; where to stay and “Secret Dublin”. The book is all about ideas for free and low-budget things to do in Dublin – and I think it has been updated just at the right time. The book will be on sale from end of June. It has 264 pages and will cost EUR 9.99. If you want it immediately or if you want to find out more about it, follow this link: benmurnane.com/?p=598. If you hurry postage will be included in the price and the book will be signed by Ben Murnane!
I didn’t get a chance yet to check the book out, but it sounds interesting and I will definitely have a look at it. Though, in case the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is not mentioned in it, I already have a suggestion for the NEXT edition. :-) The lovely and generous people from A&A Farmar, the publisher, have made THREE copies available for you to win!
And here is what you have to do: If you would like to win one of the three books, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SHOESTRING in the subject line and with your name and postal address in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me at 15:00 on Tues 07 July.

But you all are winners! ;-) Because the generous Babylon Radio is giving all of you a discount. All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

METRO AND HERALD AM MERGE
You might have heard that the two free morning newspapers Metro and Herald AM will merge. This is a sensible move, because the competition didn’t make that much sense. But it will have a big impact on lots of distributors/staff where now only half of them are required and it is a pity because it added some variety to the free newspaper world. But let’s hope that all the good aspects from both newspapers will survive. The current owners are Associated Newspapers and The Irish Times (Metro Ireland) and Independent News and Media (Herald AM) and each shareholder will retain one third of the merged business. The new newspaper will be called “Metro Herald” and approx. 70,000 copies of the new free newspaper will be distributed daily in the greater Dublin area. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0702/breaking33.htm
It will take another little while until the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will reach 70,000 people, but we are on the right way. :-P

STEPHEN’S GREEN SHOPPING CENTRE TO CLOSE DOWN???
No, no, don’t worry, that won’t happen!! At least as far as _I_ know, But I was there last night and it amazing that there are soooo many units empty, things are definitely going downhill for the landlords there. During the week I was in the Swan Shopping Centre in Rathmines and the story there is not much different. Lots of units empty. Now at times like this you would think that landlords will be lowering the rents to make it easy to find new tenants and to keep the existing ones. But someone told me during the week that this is far from reality. It seems that in general commercial rents are not dropping to reflect the changed economic climate. So, who knows, there could be more shop closures on the cards.

BA MIZU RE-OPENS AS PYGMALION
What once was a VERY busy pub/bar and – before a change of kitchen staff – had a delicious food menu closed down suddenly and without warning about 9 months or so ago. Later I heard that Ba Mizu was closed by a Health Inspector because a few things needed to be better looked after. Something like that is never good news, but usually it will get sorted within a few days and latest a week later a restaurant or pub re-opens in most cases. Ba Mizu didn’t surprisingly and the question arose if there were other problems as well. Ba Mizu was the place in the “basement” of the Powerscourt Shopping Centre but with street access from South William Street, so all in all a very good location. An interesting feature at the pub is the river Stien, known as The Poddle – a tributary of the river Liffey. The river actually flows underneath the premises and is visible through glass panels set in the floor.
Well, after a long closure all is well again, it seems. The pub has re-opened (already some while ago, but I hadn’t realised it) and it is now called Pygmalion. It is under new management and now owned by Jay Bourke who as well owns the Market Bar, Café Bar Deli and a whole range of other pubs and restaurants.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4000+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

YOGA – DARTMOUTH SQUARE
Have you heard of Dartmouth Square in Ranelagh? It was once a private park owned by a Lord Dartey, but then Dublin City Council took it over, singed a 10 year lease and then claimed it was theirs. But Lord Dartey had sold it to Noel O’Gara for 10,000 Pound, who wanted to build on it or sell it as building land. When that didn’t success he locked it up. Then the people living around broke into it and “reclaimed” it and Dublin City tried to take it from O’Gara using a Compulsory Purchase Order. That didn’t succeed either and now O’Gara decided to make life difficult for Dublin City and for the residents. He first wanted to turn the park into a car park and had then other zany and crazy ideas for what it could be used for. Some of the people living around it got together and there was a talk with O’Gara and finally he agreed to making it available to the public until the end of the year for the start. The Dartmouth Square residents put a lot of work in to restore it and now use it for community activities.
On Sat 04 July from 11:00-12:30 a Yoga class with Tahnee Fournier, an Anusara inspired yoga teacher, will take place. The class is free, but you are invited to donate “to the park”. A facebook group is set up so that you can confirm your attendance

US INDEPENDENCE DAY – DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE
On Sat 04 + Sun 05 July the Dundrum Town Centre will celebrate the US Independence Day with an entertainment programme. I am not tooo sure why Independence Day is celebrated in Dundrum, considering that it is a little removed from the USA, but I guess any reason/theme for some entertainment that might attract a few more customers must be used. Live performances will take place from the bandstand with traditional Yankee favourites, cheerleaders and an authentic marching band will entertain, face painters and kids entertainers will also be on hand with fun family games. A giant American-style free BBQ will take place on Town Square on Saturday 04 and Sunday 05 July, with chefs from Butcher’s Block providing food for all in attendance. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Especially all the photographers among you should find plenty of four-legged models. And if you did take some nice pictures, maybe you can share them with all by letting me know the link to your online photo album. A search on Google brought me to this website: www.flickr.com/photos/deadlyphoto/sets/72157605373424018 Have a look at the pictures, it is a different world!! …and definitely not what you would expect in the centre of a European capital. ;-)
A concerned reader was surprised that I mentioned this event last month because regularly there are question marks and as well issues about the proper treatment of the horses. I do share the concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. In addition I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts, I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. The market is going ahead with or without spectators, for this reason I don’t think watching the activities condones any bad treatment of animals, but please decide for yourself!

FARMLEIGH HOUSE – FOOD MARKET

CRAFTYMARKET – NEWMARKET SQUARE, D8
On Sun 05 July the next Craftymarket will take place in Newmarket Square, Dublin 8. The venue is the Dublin Food Co-op hall where the Dublin Flea Market takes place at the end of every month. The Crafty Market has more than 35 stalls full of handmade crafts and original artworks and therefore has a completely different “product portfolio” than the Flea Market. The Café and Food stall and the live music is comparable to the Flea Market, but the rest is different and well worth a visit. Ailbhe O’Connell and Louise Gambrill, the two organisers, have done a great job to get this market set-up and to keep it running and hopefully it will stay with us. The market is open from 11:00-17:00. www.thecraftymarket.com

CROSS THE LIFFEY AND YOU WILL PAY!
Are you buying from Tesco?? Don’t you dare crossing the Liffey to the South! Otherwise Tesco will make you pay – a LOT. Yes, it is very very odd. After significantly (22%) lowering the prices in the border region close to Northern Ireland because customers were just going North to do their shopping at cheaper prices, Tesco now had to give in to public pressure and to the price pressure mainly caused by Lidl and Aldi and has decided to roll-out the price reduction in Dublin as well…but not to all Dublin. No! Only the Tescos in North Dublin reduced the prices and once you cross the Liffey you still pay a lot more for the 12,000 products that were made cheaper elsewhere. The rest of Dublin has to wait another 2 weeks and the rest of Ireland up until August until these overdue price reductions are implemented. www.breakingnews.ie/archives/2009/0630/ireland/eykfgbididgb/
My advise? Shop elsewhere – either in a Tesco north of the Liffey or in a shop that doesn’t think you are a fool. For me a 2-week Tesco Boycott is definitely something I will consider. Oh and did you know that the word “boycott” was invented in Ireland? In Mayo to be precise: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boycott

I was able to hold out and managed to finish the Event Guide (12 hours of writing and researching!), but my back hurts now, so enough for this week. ;-) I do think I forgot a few events, but please forgive me if yours is one of them. (And if you are not mentioned maybe your event wasn’t free!?)
Have a wonderful weekend, hopefully with some more sun and higher temperatures! And don’t forget to listen to this Nickelback song and to think about what you would do or say.

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until the beginning of 2009 in pubs and other venues.
