Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

You cannot be serious!

Dublin Festival of History, Samhain Party Flea Market Pub Crawl

Hi!!

In 1981, former No 1 tennis player John McEnroe had a famous meltdown at Wimbledon, when he confronted the umpire at tennis match with a “You cannot be serious!” when the umpire decided that a ball was out and McEnroe disagreed. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=ransFQVzf6c) The scene became a meme later.

Looking at the calendar this week, I had exactly the same feeling: “You cannot be serious!” It is nearly October already? What happened to 2023? Where did it go? How is your year going? Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com if you feel the same as I do, or if you are perfectly happy with the progress of 2023!

But the year is far from over! There will be LOTS more free events happening in Dublin in the next three months and you know where to find out about them? Exactly! Here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! If you have subscribed to the weekly newsletter, you are all good and you get the whole list of events. If you STILL haven’t subscribed and you read this on Facebook, do yourself a favour and subscribe to the e-mail newsletter together with tens of thousands of other people who get this mail every week. On Facebook you ONLY see the weekend events. Only when you subscribe or when you go to www.DublinEventGuide.com you will find ALL events.

Second last chance to put your name down for the “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT” course. Yes, I had planned to run it on 04 Oct, but a few people asked me last week if I could move it to 11 October and I am happy to do so.

The 2-hour class “Introduction to AI and ChatGPT” will give you an overview of what is important to know in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and will give you an introduction to ChatGPT on Wed 11 Oct from 19:30-21:30. Importantly, you do NOT have ANY technical background, but all will be explained so that everyone will understand it. AI and services like ChatGPT will change our lives more than Google did, so EVERYBODY needs to know what is happening. We will look at the good and the bad of AI! The event will be online via Zoom. If you are interested, let me know here www.getthislink.com/AIclass2

The attendees at the first AI introduction event said “Very interesting couple of hours!” and “This was invaluable. Thank you so much!” and “I enjoyed every minute.” and “Really interesting and thought provoking presentation, it was really engaging!” You don’t want to miss out on this eye opening event!

And if you are part of an organisation or club or maybe at your place of work where there is interest in this topic, reply to this e-mail and tell me more and maybe I could run that class for your community. Both, in person or online is possible.

Donations in October:
EUR 45

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, the only wonderful people helping with donations were Dermot and Katherine. Thank you very much! Your help is much appreciated and is making a difference. Without it, the Dublin Event Guide can not survive.

A new month has started and things are not looking bad with a carry over from last month of EUR 45, but your help to reach the EUR 200 is much appreciated and the sooner we reach it, the sooner I can stop worrying about it. ;-)

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ A Complicated History: Ireland and the Caribbean – Talk
Wed 12 Oct – 18:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: Free
Servants and enslavers; merchants and governors; educators and journalists – the history of the Irish in the Caribbean is complex. This talk will survey Irish migration to the region from the 17th century, telling the stories of a diverse range of people who set out to make new lives for themselves in places like Jamaica, Barbados and Cuba. To what extent have Irish people shaped Caribbean societies and economies? And how have Irish-Caribbean relations evolved in the last century?
Dr Catherine Healy, who will give the talk, is Historian-in-Residence at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and she is the curator of a newly opened exhibition on Irish-Caribbean connections.
The in-person event has sold out, but there will be an online livestream available and all details are on epicchq.com/event/a-complicated-history-ireland-and-the-caribbean/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops and there are still some places available. The workshops are free and go for 45 minutes and are for children. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/
