You might remember that I mentioned last week that I was away and that I would be back for the next Dublin Event Guide? Yes, that was the plan!
|
|
But the plan got changed when the German Railway company threw three (!!) technical faults my way all on the same day and on my trip to the airport. I caused train cancellations and massive train delays.
|
|
The result was that … I missed my flight. Arghhh! And now I am still in Germany. Yay! ;-)
|
|
|
|
28 degrees, amazing weather, a nephew and a niece who screamed for joy when they heard that I had missed my flight and was coming back, parents that I hadn’t seen for 2.5 years…there were MANY reasons why “being stuck” here is not the worst scenario. Unplanned, but it could be a LOT worse. :-)
|

Does it affect you? I could pretend that it doesn’t, but it will affect you a little! Because I am still on (extended) holidays, this week’s edition will again be a tiny bit thinner. I will include all the events I can find where I know that they will be popular, but some of the “niche-ier” things I will leave out. I hope that’s ok.

I don’t think I will be able to extend my stay away any longer, so next week I will definitely be back in Dublin! (The train is booked for 2 whole hours earlier than what should normally be enough.) ;-)

On Saturday 21 May, the National Drawing Day 2022 will happen. It is a day of…you guessed it… DRAWING! And lots of museums, galleries, libraries and cultural organisations all over Ireland are inviting to events that will encourage you to get drawing. I am predicting that next week’s Dublin Event Guide might arrive a little too late next Saturday morning to allow you a good planning of the day, therefore I suggest that you check the list of participating venues at www.nationalgallery.ie/explore-and-learn/drawing-day-2022 to find the place where maybe a suitable event for you will be run.

+++ AFRICA DAY 2022
Africa Day is celebrated on 25 May ever year and in the past there were great festivals in the Gardens of Dublin Castle in some years and later at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. Then Africa Day was cancelled for two years and this year there are meager attempts to bring it back. The Irish Africa Day website africaday.ie makes the bold claim that “This year will see Ireland’s largest-ever Africa Day programme…” but either that is totally incorrect or it is just that Dublin City is performing exceptionally poorly.

+++ International Literature Festival Dublin
The International Literature Festival Dublin takes place from 19-29 May and for the first time, the main Festival site will be Merrion Square Park. There are also some additional events in other venues (e.g. Oscar Wilde House, National Gallery, Irish Architectural Archive and the Trinity Long Room Hub) all in the neighbourhood of Merrion Square. In Merrion Square, five tents will be the locations for all the events. The organisers tell us that in addition to the non-free events, “We also cater for a limited number of free drop-in events.”, but I wasn’t able to find these free events easily and in the end gave up. +++ Bealtaine Festival
Every May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age” and is run by Age & Opportunity. This is a oddly cumbersome description, but it expresses the difficult balance act between what the Bealtaine Festival essentially once was, a festival for old people, and what it wants to be, an inclusive festival for everyone who is older than around 50 without calling them old yet. A difficult balance act. And the saying “if you want to be something for everyone, you will be nothing for anybody” comes to mind. If you asked me, I would describe the Bealtaine Festival as a cultural festival for older people who otherwise don’t get much involved in events and culture and it has a REALLY important function in that role. It makes getting out and meeting others more accessible for many people. It is just a pity that it is limited to one month per year. There is a large number of events and you will find them all at bealtaine.ie/events-2022/ but this year the Bealtaine festival seems to be much smaller than in previous years. If you want to limit your search to events in Dublin City, you can use this link bealtaine.ie/bealtaine-event/?_sft_event_county=dublin-dublin-city and find 52 events.
