With the Dublin Event Guide being nearly 15 years old, a lot has happened in your lives and in my life since the start in 2007. We all got a good bit older and possibly a little wiser ;-) and while many of you are not yet 15 years receiving the Dublin Event Guide, there are actually still a few of the VERY early subscribers here.
|
|
Relationships might have changed, jobs most likely have changed, hobbies were dropped or found, goals were achieved and many are possibly still to achieve.
|
|
|
|
One thing that I discovered in the last few years is a new sport that I totally fell in love with. It is called “Padel”, but has nothing to do with water! Instead it also is known as “Padel Tennis” and has a good few similarities with tennis played in doubles, but the big difference is that it is played in a court surrounded by glass walls.
|
|
Padel was invented in the 1960s in Mexico and grew massive in Spain and Argentina. Today, Spain has an estimated 6 million Padel players!! Tennis only has around 4 million players in Spain.

My guess is that Ireland has just around 1500 players, but it is growing here as well really fast. The biggest Padel facility in Ireland is in Bushy Park in Terenure where we have four Padel courts.

I started playing about 3 years ago (do the lockdown months count when you calculate duration??) and am NOT a natural talent. But I really really enjoy playing Padel and would love to play every day of the week, if I could! So you see I am a little addicted, but interestingly that happens to LOTS of people.
|
|
|
|
This weekend, the “International Madison Tournament” takes place at Bushy Park Tennis and Padel Club and with some degree of pride, I can tell you that together with my Padel partner Flavio, I won the final in the Men-C category last night.
|
|
Why am I telling you all this? Well, in case this interests you and you want to find out a bit more about Padel, you can come to watch the tournament this weekend. Saturday afternoon or evening (until 20:00) and Sunday (09:00-17:30) are probably the best times. Admission is free and on Saturday you can nicely combine it with a visit to the Bushy Park market.

Do you know about the Gospel Rising Music Festival? A great group of people organise this amazing Gospel Music Festival every year (with a bit of a break due to some global health issue recently) for the last 10 years or so. A brand new event during the festival is the “Know Your Lyrics – Gospel Rising Music Game Show” in The Sugar Club. It will be lots of fun: Two teams compete to pick the right lyrics of well known gospel music songs. Led by their host and with the help of the audience, two fantastic piano players will captain their team of gospel singers through a series of rounds against the clock to guess the hidden song lines. Remember the “Lyrics Board” on RTE? Yes, there are some similarities! ;-)

+++ Bealtaine Festival
Every May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age” and is run by Age & Opportunity. This is a oddly cumbersome description, but it expresses the difficult balance act between what the Bealtaine Festival essentially once was, a festival for old people, and what it wants to be, an inclusive festival for everyone who is older than around 50 without calling them old yet. A difficult balance act. And the saying “if you want to be something for everyone, you will be nothing for anybody” comes to mind. If you asked me, I would describe the Bealtaine Festival as a cultural festival for older people who otherwise don’t get much involved in events and culture and it has a REALLY important function in that role. It makes getting out and meeting others more accessible for many people. It is just a pity that it is limited to one month per year. There is a large number of events and you will find them all at bealtaine.ie/events-2022/ but this year the Bealtaine festival seems to be much smaller than in previous years.
