The Christmas lights are on

Fingal & South Dublin County Inclusion Week

Hi all!
Last Wednesday evening the Christmas lights in Dublin were switched on – with no large audience and no stars or VIPs. Even before the little issue of a still spreading illness, the low profile was chosen in previous years as a result of the mad popularity this event had before. You could say it was killed because it was TOO popular.
Last Wednesday was only the 10th of November and that feels still early, BUT think about it: Christmas is less than 6 weeks away. That time will FLY! And, as the cynics point out, the Christmas lights are – int he first place – not there for you to just enjoy, instead they are there to attract people into the City Centre to buy more (The shops pay for the lights with their payment to the “DublinTown” organisation!). So like it or not, it is not a surprise that the they are put up early.
I like Christmas lights and Christmas atmosphere and in all honesty, I think 6 weeks is definitely ok for Christmas lights on the street. For Christmas trees in homes I would wait another bit though. ;-) When I was a child, the Christmas tree would not get into the living room before 23 Dec, but that is MUCH too late! I think the Saturday before advent is a good time, so 27 November this year! ;-) Still too early? Or is it too late. Let me know!
Last week the Dublin Event Guide was quite late again. There are a number of reasons for that, but the main reason is that the number of events and the complexity of events are growing. (Festivals are a lot more work to dissect and to fish out the free events, than the online events of the past.) Oh and Facebook is making it now sooooo difficult to find free events. Unreal!
Previously (i.e. pre-lockdown) I focused on weekend events and only “sprinkled in” a few most-know-about weekday events and I might have to return to that. At the moment, though, the weekend events are still a lot scarcer than they were before, so the goal of getting this newsletter out to you is clear and definite, but the path to it not so much yet. ;-)
And finally: All over Europe new lockdown’s are becoming more and more likely. The Netherlands already went back to Lockdowns and a whole range of other countries are considering them. So prepare yourself! Mentally and otherwise! Prepare yourself for the eventuality that we might be going back before we go forward. There is still hope that it won’t come to it and then all is good, but if it comes to it and it hits you unprepared, the impact could be mcuh more severe then if you get your head around the possibility right now.
No matter what happens, I will do my best to tell you about the events that are taking place either online or in person.

Donations in November:
EUR 299
(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)
If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.
The counter on the left shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be extracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.
Last week the wonderful people that helped with a donation were Keelan, Leagh, Tanya, Tonia, Enid! Thank you very much! You are appreciated and your donation is as well!
With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.
Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.
To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)
In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb
To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG
And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?
Thank you!!

(The odd gaps in words in the text above is to make sure that spam filters don’t do silly things with this mail. Talking about a topic like the one above shouldn’t disqualify an e-mail, but spam filters are very black and white.)
+++ Visit Dublin Castle for free
Until the end of 2021, entry to Dublin Castle is free for all visitors. You will be able to visit the State Apartments on a self-guided tour. There are currently no guided tours and therefore the Medieval Undercroft and Chapel Royal are not accessible. Opening hours are Mon-Sun & Bank Holidays: 09:45-17:45 (last admission 17:15). |
+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or NLP or some Business related “soft skills”? Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. Check out the website at shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)
+++ National Gallery tickets available here
The National Gallery is usually free anyway, but in current times you will have to book tickets to get access and you have to enter the building on the Merrion Street side. Tickets are available here: www.nationalgallery.ie/visit-us/book-your-ticket The National Gallery also is running events again and because the events have limited number of spaces, they can book out relatively fast, at least before I can write about the events, so check out the events 1-2 weeks in advance here www.nationalgallery.ie/whats-on and then book tickets for them.

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.
