What can I do while being locked in?
Here are some suggestions for activities that are NOT watching TV. ;-)
1) For our weekly Museum’s Tour, I will return back to Dublin again. The great “EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum” in the chq Building at George’s Dock now also has a Virtual Reality Tour and you should have a look, especially if you have never been in the museum. dublin.epicchq.com/virtual-tour-epic-the-irish-emigration-museum You don’t need a VR Headset for it, but if you have one it gets even better.
2) Last week I already mentioned the art competition by the Kildare Gallery for kids: thekildaregallery.ie/the-kildare-gallery-childrens-art-competition/
This week I found some more:
There is firstly the prestigious Zurich Young Portrait Prize by the National Gallery www.nationalgallery.ie/art-and-artists/zurich-young-portrait-prize-2020 and for adults it is the Zurich Portrait Prize www.nationalgallery.ie/art-and-artists/zurich-portrait-prize-2020
And there is also the Donnybrook Tidy Towns competition. Much smaller, but maybe nevertheless something to aspire for www.facebook.com/events/3090289094325506/
3) Learn something new even if you have done so already last week because to help even more, Udemy is running a special offer. EUR 11.99 for many (or all?) courses. Have a browse here click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=/WFVYmx8raQ&offerid=507388.9273&subid=0&type=4
Udemy also released a long long list of completely free courses for the time during the Covid-19 crisis and you will find this way: Click on the link above and then type into the search field “free course”. In the “topic” field on the left (on a deskop) or via the “Filter” function on mobile, you can choose what area you are interested in.
4) And if you want to expand your knowledge further, then reading is strongly recommended. Buy your eBooks (or paper books) from Amazon here www.amazon.co.uk/?&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 and you will also help the Dublin Event Guide.
I prefer Book Depository, though. Usually the books are cheaper from them and most importantly delivery is always included in the price: www.bookdepository.com/?a_aid=dubevg
Let me recommend two books again this week:
+ The first one is “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***” by Mark Manson. He tells us that we should stop trying to be “positive” all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9780062641540/?a_aid=dubevg)
+ The second recommended book is the classic by Dale Carnegie: “How to Win friends & influence people”. (www.bookdepository.com/book/9781439199190/?a_aid=dubevg) Carnegie explains that success comes from the ability to communicate effectively with others and he teaches you skills to make people want to be in your company, see things your way and feel wonderful about it.
And if you are looking for a great site that provides book summaries, check this one out: readitfor.me/91927
5) Here is some Mindfulness Meditation for you, called “Heartfulness Masterclasses”: www.facebook.com/events/2487794061470093
6) And because it is Easter this week, I have to mention two religious services or masses. The first one is one that I am normally part of. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every week (in normal times) at a Gospel Choir Mass in Gardiner Street Church and this week we will broadcast a Gospel Choir Mass on Facebook for the first time. It will take place at 19:30 on Sunday 12 April at www.facebook.com/TheGSGC/ It will definitely be a mass with a difference! Give it a go, the great music will hopefully make it an enjoyable Sunday evening event.
And if a traditional Easter mass is more your thing, then I recommend the Easter Mass at Gardiner Street church on Saturday at 21:00. You can watch it here mcnmedia.tv/camera/st-francis-xavier
7) And some live music concerts:
A special treat for many will be Andrea Bocellis’s “Music for Hope” on Sunday at 18:00 on Youtube Live here www.youtube.com/watch?v=huTUOek4LgU
Music Network Ireland’s new contemporary music concerts, the “Butterfly Sessions” will continue this week as well and all details are at www.musicnetwork.ie/concerts/details/the_butterfly_sessions
The performances will be on the Music Network Ireland YouTube channel here www.youtube.com/user/MusicNetworkIreland
8) I mentioned the Virtual Reality tour of “EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum” at the top of this list. But EPIC is not only offering a cool tour, they also have an Easter Activity Pack for families with children aged 8 – 10 that you can download at dublin.epicchq.com/epic-easter-rising-resource-pack
And there is a a Family Tree beginners pack, that will help you to do your own genealogy research. You can find it here dublin.epicchq.com/irish-genealogy-research-free-family-tree-pack
9) A friend of mine, Lenny Stokes, who is the lead guitarist and singer in the great party band “Vintage Vibes Band” created a Covid-19 related video as a tribute to all the emergency workers. You can find it here www.facebook.com/Lenny.Stokes/videos/10158278409111873/
And this week I will leave you with this…
Easter is normally a time for family! Meeting the family, getting Easter eggs, eating them together, going for a walk and enjoying the improving weather. This year will be different!
My parents are both in a high-risk group due to their age and I was meant to visit them and go to Germany for the communion of my niece next weekend. The communion has been cancelled and I currently have NO idea when I will see my parents next time. Luckily they are at the moment both in very good form.
Many of us are in the same situation and sadly many more have family members who are in much more precarious situations.
Dear Dublin Event Guide community, be there for each other! Use the limited means that we have at the moment, but use them!
That’s it for this week! Happy Easter!!
Take care,
–Joerg
