Hi all!
The Christmas Markets have started with a vengeance and I have updated the www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com website with all the essential details. Check it out! Lots of events this week and I hope you will have a nice one! Also check out the Dublin News, there are a good few news bits there this week.
[quads id=1]
You are soooo great people! Donations are STILL arriving so that the outstanding bill has been now reduced to EUR 205. I really really really appreciate your help! Amazing bunch! ;-) Two weeks to find that! So, if you have never helped with a donation but got GREAT benefit from the Dublin Event Guide over the years, NOW might be the best time to help! ;-) I will appreciate every cent! :-)
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 80,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is from American Author Neale Donald Walsch. He makes a very important point about our comfort zone.
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. – Neale Donald Walsch
What does he mean? He is talking about our Comfort Zone where we feel….comfortable because nothing is challenging us while we are in it. But LIFE means that you encounter challenges and overcome them to become a better, stronger, more successful person and once you do that once, you can do it again and again and again. So if you want to experience exhilaration and success and the sense of achievement and ultimately LIFE, you have to get out of your comfort zone!
Do something today that challenges you! That gets you of this comfortable space you were ALWAYS in.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Andrew M, Richard B, A. M., Dara MD, Anna P, Ana R, Maria J were so great to help with a very much needed donation. Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week I will pick the Gulliver’s Dair on Sunday and ALL of the Christmas Markets! :-) Try them ALL out and tell me which one is the best!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Dublin Event Guide retirement!
I will leave that message here, because it seems that not everyone has seen it yet. :-O
I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you last week, in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.
I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. That means that you will still hear from me and I will still tell you about events, but not through a weekly e-mail or daily Facebook messages anymore, instead it will be less scheduled and only when big(is) events are coming up. But I won’t go away and I hope you will stick around as well. ;-)
For some more details, check your Inbox for the mail from me OR drop me a mail if you can’t find it OR go to the Facebook Page and find the announcement at the top of the Page there.

Dublin Christmas Markets Website
To help you and your friends and families find your way around the Christmas Markets in Dublin, I created a few years ago a website at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com and this website is again updated for 2018, so you can check out there what markets are coming up in the run up to Christmas.
You might know that I am a bit of a Christmas Market purist and am extremely disappointed with what Dublin manages to put together. With that in mind, I would say that most (if not all) of the “Christmas Markets” on that list are actually “Markets at Christmas”, but not real Christmas Markets. But decide for yourself!
And if you wonder which markets I would recommend: I have heard good things about Winterval in Waterford but was never there myself. So the only market that I would definitely recommend is the one in Belfast! :-O

Elvis Tribute Gig – Help me, help Eabha!
Did you know that I sing in an Elvis Tribute Band? :-O Don’t worry, though, I am NOT the front man! :-) The Elvis Tribute Performer is the outstanding Kevin Doyle who truly sounds like Elvis. If you don’t believe me, come to our gig on 03 December and if you didn’t enjoy the gig, I will buy you a pint afterwards!
I sing in Kevin’s backing choir and LOVE our performances. The gig on 03 December is a very special gig for two reasons. Firstly it will be a fundraiser for little Eabha, the daughter of another choir member and for the Jack & Jill Foundation. Eabha was diagnosed with Alcardi Syndrome when she was one week old, which is a rare malformation syndrome of the brain. The Jack & Jill Foundation helps families with children who suffer from severe intellectual and physical disabilities.
And the second reason for this being a very special gig is because it is happening on the 50th Anniversary of Elvis’ 68 Comeback Special. A very very unique concert with a tiny audience that sat on the stage and directly around it. We will do a re-run of that special gig and add some more parts to it. More than 30 songs!! It will be en epic experience that will never be repeated.
The gig is not free, because we are trying to get money for Eabha and the Jack & Jill Foundation, but it is worth every cent! The National Stadium can take 2000 people and, boy would it be cool if we could fill that place!!! I did do concerts in front of more than 1000, but 2000 would be a new record. :-)
Tickets are available via this link gturl.eu/Elvis68 and if that link doesn’t work, then use this here.

Christmas FM is back!
Christmas FM returned to the airwaves last Wednesday!
The popular Christmas radio station that broadcasts from the Ballsbridge Hotel throughout the whole pre-Christmas time is back for the 11th year. It started on 28 November and will be broadcasting until 27 December.
Christmas FM has raised almost EUR 1.5million for a range of charities over these 11 years and this year they will be raising awareness and funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The radio station’s goal is to raise over EUR 200,000.
The station is available online at www.christmasfm.com and also on your radio on frequency 105.2FM in Dublin.

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly event map from Energia was featured, but this map is now going into hibernation until spring.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Lustre & InFlux is an exhibition of innovative work of Ireland’s newest goldsmithing and ceramic graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Centres of Excellence in Jewellery and Goldsmithing and in Ceramics in Kilkenny.

Christmas on Merrion Square
10:00 – 17:00, Sat 01 Dec
Irish Architectural Archives, 45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2
Christmas on the Square 2018 is not what it once was. A few years ago LOTS of Georgian Houses around Merrion Square were open before Christmas with markets and other events.
This year only the Irish Architectural Archive at 45 Merrion Square will sell Irish design, craft and food on the Open Day. So “Christmas on the Square” is a little euphemistic maybe? It should be “Christmas in No 45”. :-)

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Dec
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)
The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate + Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers + Measure your Personal Space + A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.
People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 02 Dec

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 02 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:00 – 18:00, Mon 03 Dec
St. Martin Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.
The opening times are 27 Nov-06 January: 11:00-18:00. (Closed on 25+26 Dec and 01 Jan)

J.W. Sweetman, 2 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2
The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in J.W. Sweetman’s. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together.
The topic this month is: Responses to the Extinction Crisis
In light of the recent report from WWF/ZSL showing how the world has lost 60% of its large animals in the past 40 years, there can be no doubt that we find ourselves at the centre of an extinction crisis. How does it affect Ireland? What is the relationship between the extinction crisis and climate breakdown? What can individuals and communities do to prevent the crisis deepening? IWT’s Pádraic Fogarty will give an overview of the situation and propose solutions. Come along and bring your ideas!
Meet up on the top floor of J.W. Sweetman’s. Doors open at 18:30 and the talk is at 19:00. Admission is free.

Rathfarnham Castle – Free Admission
09:00, Wed 05 Dec
Rathfarnham Castle, Rathfarnham Road, Dublin 14
We once had this brilliant monthly event called “First Wednesday” or then “Free Wednesday”, when on the first Wednesday of the month all state owned Irish heritage sites waived all admission charges for the day. Unfortunately this super popular opportunity to bring culture closer to people in Ireland has been cancelled for nearly all Dublin sites and for other popular sites in other parts of Ireland, which was a very bad decision.
But there is ONE single site left in Dublin that currently offers free admission on the first Wednesday of the month and that is Rathfarnham Castle! Tickets will be limited, so it is strongly recommended to go there early.
To find the list of participating sites go to this PDF document.

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:00 – 18:00, Thu 06 Dec

Dublin Flea Christmas Market
12:30 – 18:30, Thu 06 Dec
Point Village, East Wall Road, Dublin 1
The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.
At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)
This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.
Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:00 – 18:00, Fri 07 Dec

The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.
“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”
There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.
I’d say this is a MUST GO exhibition for every fan of Irish Football!

Dublin Flea Christmas Market
12:30 – 18:30, Fri 07 Dec

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that
Something seriously wrong here! EU Leaders Salaries
During the week I found a list of EU Salaries that was posted on Facebook and if you look through that list you realise that something is SERIOUSLY wrong in Ireland!
Formatting of tables with lots of numbers doesn’t work so well here, but I hope you will see the blatant discrepancy between the salaries and the size of the countries. And I don’t care who is the head of our little country (or its government) and also is it irrelevant that some salary cuts have already been “endured” by the Taoiseach.
EU Leaders’ Gross Salary per year:
+ Slovakia —— Population: 5.4 mio ——–Leader’s salary: EUR 45.127 + Portugal——-Population: 10.46 mio ——Leader’s salary: EUR 68,670 + Hungary——-Population: 10 mio ———Leader’s salary: EUR 72,000 + Spain———-Population: 46.77 mio——Leader’s salary: EUR 78,000 + Greece———Population: 11.03 mio——Leader’s salary: EUR 85,479 + Lithuania——Population: 10.46mio——-Leader’s salary: EUR 90,361 + Italy———–Population: 58.83 mio——-Leader’s salary: EUR 115,000
+ IRELAND——Population: 4.7 mio———-Leader’s salary: EUR 185,000
Is that mad or what? The Taoiseach earns more than the leader of the government in Italy or Spain or all these other countries?
Note; I didn’t check all these numbers in detail and instead took it from a post that is signed with “unitedpeople.ie”. United People seems to be a new party in Ireland. I don’t knowmuch about this party and in no way support or endorse it. A brief “Fact check” on a Wikipedia Page here did indicate that the numbers in general seem to be at least in the right region.

If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link.
