Hi all!
I am currently in Germany and just got the Dublin Event Guide finished. It is a busy week with Halloween and Bram Stoker Festival etc. but busy weeks are good weeks for us event enthusiasts, right? ;-) I had hoped to have it finished earlier, but that didn’t work as planned. It is still earlier than most weeks, so hopefully it will be ok.
[quads id=1]
Have a nice long weekend and I will “see” you next week. ;-)
But PLEASE don’t forget this! For October I still need to find EUR 70 and the EUR 240 bill for November is just days away. Please help if you can!!! You can do so via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This weeks Feel Good Slot Quote is from Mark Twain. He said:
All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure. – Mark Twain
So, be brave enough to ignore sometimes wrong or non-sensical rules and opinions and unhelpful influences and be confident about what you want to achieve…and you will achieve.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week only Pat M was so wonderful to help with a donation! Thanks a lot!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend I am away, but if I were in Dublin, I would go to the Stokerland Funfair, the Dublin Flea Market and the Macnas Parade. Ohh and I nearly forgot the Bram Stoker Festival Life Music Trail. There are also a number of other Halloween events throughout parts of Dublin (e.g. Sandymount, Ballymun, Finglas, Tallaght).

Release Your Voice – Singing Workshop – Ticket Competition
Sunday 12 November – 11:00-17:30 The Lab, Foley Street, Dublin 1
Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields is running a full day workshop in singing techniques entitled “Release Your Voice”. This highly enjoyable and intensive workshop will show you how to get the most out of your voice. It is suitable for all styles of music from Popular to Operatic, Jazz, Traditional, Musical Theatre etc. and all levels of singer from beginner/non-singer to professional. It will also benefit public speakers and actors in their projection and delivery.
You will learn how to develop and gain control over your voice; extend your pitch -range, improve your timbre, intonation and power; sing in a healthy way for your voice; be a more versatile and expressive singer; communicate/interpret a song and perform with confidence. And you will have the opportunity to work individually with Joan on the song of your choice.
The fee for the full day of training is a very affordable EUR 60 and if you tell Joan at the time of booking that you found out about the course in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you will even only pay EUR 55. – Book your place via 086-3844527 or via freeyourvoice@outlook.com now! (Please note: Joan’s mobile unfortunately got stolen, so for now only use the e-mail address, but hopefully she will have a phone again soon.)
And if you enter this competition, then one person will even get the ticket for free! But don’t wait until the competition is decided. Instead just go ahead and book with Joan and if you are the lucky winner and you have booked already, you will get your money back. The reason why I am suggesting to book NOW is because there are limited places available on the course!
To enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with RELEASE YOUR VOICE in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Friday 03 November.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Ryanair delays carry-on bag rule changes
Ryanair will change the rules for carry-on baggage significantly as I had reported before, but the rule change has now been postponed to 15 January instead of 01 November to give passengers “more time to familiarise themselves with the changes”.
From that day non-priority customers will only be allowed to bring one very small bag on board an will have to check the second piece of hand luggage in. However, that second piece will not cost anything (YET!).
Customer who paid for priority boarding will be allowed to bring two pieces of hand luggage (one big and one small) on board.
Check in baggage will cost less (EUR 25 instaed of EUR 35) and the checked baggage allowance will increase to 20kg.
RTE reports the delay for the rule changes here.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!
|
Say NO to Adblockers!
I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.
BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.
So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Library of Things
12:00 – 16:00, Sat 28 Oct
Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8
Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.
A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.
The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.
The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 28 Oct
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)
Exhibits are for example + 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017 + a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations + Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world + Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster) + a selection of Manuals for Civilisation The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Dublin City Marathon 2017
09:00, Sun 29 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The Dublin City Marathon is a yearly event that for many years took place on the bank holiday Monday but is now moved to the Sunday of the October bank holiday weekend. There will be approx. 40,000 (!!!) participants and it is a massive operation to get everything running as smooth as it does year after year.
The event is not free and registration has closed a long time ago because it was full so soon, but the free part is that you can support and cheer on the runners either along the route or at the start or finish line…and many do that every year. The start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the finish is at Merrion Square and the course route takes the runners all over Dublin and you can find the map via this site here. The race will start at 09:00 and because some participants will run and others will jog and others again will walk, it will continue for many hours.
Please note that there will be partial and total road closures throughout Dublin and give yourself additional time if you need to drive somehwere.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 29 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Bank Holiday Monday
09:00, Mon 30 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
This is the last bank holiday before Christmas! A somehwat surprising thing about bank holidays in Ireland is that the number of events often doesn’t increase in a bank holiday but instead decreases (because a few regular events might not take place). It seems that event organisers either are afraid that they won’t find a big enough audience on a long weekend OR they need some time off themselves. :-)
All shops are open – if that is your alternative “occupation” to free events – public transport is usually on a Sunday schedule, but if you drive do NOT use the bus lanes, they are NOT on a Sunday schedule. An interesting aspect is that Pay&Display parrking in Dublin City will NOT be enforced on bank holidays.

Halloween
08:00, Tue 31 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
Today is Halloween, which was originally a Celtic Harvest Festival and is the Gaelic Samhain festival. The word Halloween comes from the contraction of “All Hallows’ Evening” because All Hallows is on 01 November. Because of that contraction some people prefer to write it as “Hallowe’en” (The ‘ is not a misplaced accent, but represents the missing letters in “evening”).
Halloween in Ireland is nowadays a festival for grown ups to dress up (like mardi gras/carnival in other countries) and for kids the dressing up is made even better by the amount of sweets that they can get when they are going around the houses on their “Trick or Treat” loot. If unexpectedly your doorbell rings on Tuesday evening, it is most likely a bunch of kids offering you the deal to either give them treats (sweets) or they will play a “trick” on you. Most people stay on the safe side and buy a “trick” free life with some handfulls of sweets. :-)
At Halloween the boundary between our world and the Otherworld is seen as very thin and therefore costumes will be used to scare the ghosts away.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to some OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 01 Nov
Various heritage locations in Dublin
For years, this event was one of the most popular monthly events with a HUGE amount of people taking part. But this year, it was more or less terminated for all of us in Dublin.
The Free Wednesday (currently) still continues outside of Dublin, but the interesting heritage sites in Dublin have been removed from the list. “Free Wednesday” is the first Wednesday every month when entry charges at some state-owned heritage sites are waived.
The sites are all owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). Many OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well.
Regrettably Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle were removed from this great initiative and The Casino in Marino is still closed for an indefinite period of time, so the only site in Dublin that is still taking part (for another bit!?) is Rathfarnham Castle.
Outside but near to Dublin, you can visit + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow free of charge. The full list of sites in Ireland is here.

Dublin Library of Things
17:30 – 19:30, Thu 02 Nov
Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Security Screened Wallets
The latest security recommendation is to use a Security Screened Wallet that will prevent access to your Credit Card through Near Field Communication (NFC) or RFID while it is in your pocket. Why is this a thing? Well, if you only need to tap your card on a Credit Card reader to pay (Contactless Payment), then a criminal only needs to have a portable Credit Card Reader and needs to get close enough to your card in a packed Luas or train to also be able to take money from you.
Credit Card companies say that this is not a risk and the limit to EUR 30 protects you further, but read the TINY print, i.e. the Terms & Conditions and you will see that they are well aware that there are risks and they have a lot of responsibilities put in your court.
Tapping your card is convenient, but I never found it a huge challenge to type in my code when I use a credit card. The time you save might be 30 seconds all in and that is really not a convenience game changer.
So I never would need to “tap” my credit card and therefore I made sure that it will not even have that functionality. The consequence is that I do NOT need a security screened wallet because no criminal could “tap” my card either against a will.
Some say that credit card companies/banks don’t give you cards that do NOT have the NFC or RFID functionality. But I would have to ask you if you are really certain and if you have not just asked, but insisted.
I have cards from 2 banks and a credit card company and none of them has the NFC/RFID functionality. All I needed to do was ask for cards without it!
If your bank refused to give you a card without it, tell the bank that you will then disconnect the RFID antenna within the card and familiarise yourself about the disconnection trick via YouTube clips. Example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9vTvbHgi2M You will “damage” the card and the credit card company/bank might tell you that you are not allowed to do that. Then openly tell them that you will damage the card UNLESS they send you one without the “Tapping” or contactless payment option. Tell me if that worked at dublineventguide@gmail.com

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
