Hi all!
Today I will do it the other way around. I will update website and smart phone app at 11:00 (still late I know) and ALSO send the e-mail out at that time. But I will then still add some more events and will update the smartphone app and the website regularly until all is updated. It is an attempt to bring the sending of the mail forward again because sending it on Saturday late afternoon is really not a great idea, I know!
[ad]
On the website you will see in this line which version you have in front of you: This is the FINAL edition.
Not too many BIG events today, but definitely some stuff for kids/families and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival has a music component (obviously) but also a car show and a fashion show and there is some Family Day in Temple Bar today as well. Enjoy!
Thanks for the support again last week. all your support counts! We are now down to 70 outstanding Euro, that is great halfway through the month. Let’s hope that we can get these 70 soon instead of stretching it out to the last week. So please don’t stop your support help via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 72,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I have funny video clip for you, because laughter makes us feel good, right? It is a harmless sequence of events, but it is seriously funny. Have a look and a giggle or a laugh:

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week donations came from Rachel McG, John F, Ann Marie S, Melanie B, Magdalena H, Leigh Ph, Mark G! Thank you so much! Your help is much needed and VERY much appreciated.
Without donations the Dublin Event Guide will not continue arriving in your Inbox every week! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader, but no donations will eventually kill this resource for Dublin.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend it is relatively quiet in Dublin. Sure there are still more than 190 events but there is not a total attention grabbing big event. But I recommend the Dublin Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival (which is independent from the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon!), then the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is on again on Sunday and I always like that. On Saturday the 140 birthday of the National Library and National Museum will be celebrated and on Thursday the Dublin Quays Festival starts. Not that quiet! ;-)

Release Your Voice – Singing Workshop – Ticket Competition – LAST CHANCE!
Sat 19 August (11:00-17:30) – Please note it is SATURDAY 19 August, not 20 August! The Lab, Foley Street, Dublin 1
Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields is running a full day workshop in singing techniques entitled “Release Your Voice”. This highly enjoyable and intensive workshop will show you how to get the most out of your voice. It is suitable for all styles of music from Popular to Operatic, Jazz, Traditional, Musical Theatre etc. and all levels of singer from beginner/non-singer to professional. It will also benefit public speakers and actors in their projection and delivery.
You will learn how to develop and gain control over your voice; extend your pitch -range, improve your timbre, intonation and power; sing in a healthy way for your voice; be a more versatile and expressive singer; communicate/interpret a song and perform with confidence. And you will have the opportunity to work individually with Joan on the song of your choice.
Joan’s workshops are hugely popular and usually sell out! Her expertise and experience combined with the highly attractive fee for the full day of training of just EUR 60 guarantees that. And if you book before 10 August, it is even only EUR 55. Book your place via 086-3844527 or via freeyourvoice@outlook.com now!
And if you enter this competition, you even have a chance to win a free workshop. But don’t wait until the competition is decided. Instead just go ahead and book with Joan and if you are the lucky winner and you have booked already, you will get your money back. The reason why I am suggesting to book NOW is because there are limited places available on the course!
To enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with JOANSHIELDS17 in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Tuesday 15 August.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Go-Ahead Busses to replace Dublin Bus on 24 routes
It will be another while, but from November 2018 the private bus and rail company Go-Ahead, who are also active in London since the 1980s and in Singapore more recently, will take over 25 routes from Dublin Bus. Go-Ahead has 29,000 employees and a revenue of GBP 3.3 bn and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. That is some might competition for Dublin Bus.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) went out to tender for these routes and Go-Ahead won them. Some of the routes are 17, 17a, 18, 33a, 33b, 45a, 59, 63, 75 and 76, according to the Irish Times here.
Privatisation of public transport does usually not exactly lead to a lowering of prices, but in this case, let’s hope that the NTA will continue to make sure that all routes are treated and priced equally.

Alert: Watch out at ATMs in Dublin
During the week I saw a post with pictures on Facebook about a situation at the ATM at College Green. Two women and one man were seemingly attempting to steal money from people who took out money from the ATM by distracting and/or hassling people.
So, look around you and maybe even observe the ATM from a distance for a few minutes before you go there to get money. If you see people close by that hang around and shouldn’t be there, go to a different ATM or alternatively get together with other people in the queue to watch each others back (literally!).

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Polo Novice Tournament
15:00, Sat 12 Aug
Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
A Polo Novice Tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the Polo Grounds in Phoenix Park, in connection with the Dublin Horse Show.
I wasn’t able to find many details. The All Ireland Polo Club Facebook Page doesn’t give much away and their website is not much better. So I did find that “All are welcome to watch!” and that gives me some hope that you can watch for free, but unfortunately I am not 100% certain.
I also wasn’t able to find out the starting times for all matches. On Saturday there is one at 15:00 and the other at 16:30, but there were no times given for Sunday.
So why do I mention it anyway? Well, Polo is not the type of sport that you see at every corner in Ireland, so it is something special and that justifies mentioning it even with the sparse information available.

Perseid Meteor Showers – Stargazing for everyone
23:00, Sat 12 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The Perseid Showers will peak tonight so if you manage to get to a place where there is no light pollution (away from street lights), no clouds and if you also can avoid the moon light then you could see the
But it won’t be easy: A cloud-free Ireland is rare at best of times and to avoid light pollution you have to get away from Dublin. Phoenix Park is the minimum but better is North County Dublin or Wicklow, away from population centres where there are street lights. And what about the moon? Well, he is not helpful today! Moonrise is on Saturday at 23:05 and Moonset is on Sunday at 12:34 with a brightness of about 80%.
If you go to this site: www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/meteor-shower/perseid.html it will tell you in what direction and what altitude you should see the Perseids.
The Perseids are small pieces of space debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle and they are visible from mid-July every year, with the peak in activity between 9 and 14 August. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches about 80 or more per hour.
Admission??? It is free! :-)

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 13 Aug
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

12:30, Sun 13 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:

Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 13 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Polo Novice Tournament
15:00, Sun 13 Aug

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 18 Aug

Fairy Fords and other nonsense from Kerry politicians
You would think the Healy-Rae family from Kerry is a bunch of comedians. They are sometimes better than the comedic website Waterfordwhispers and hilarity is nearly guaranteed with every statement they make. But there is a problem! The problem is that the Healy-Raes are NOT comedians, but instead are elected members of the Irish parliament. They are meant to lead the coutnry together with the other 159 TDs, but their opnions are typically batshit crazy.
It all started with Jackie Healy-Rae, an independent TD, representing Kerry South (and nothing else!!) for 14 long year. After he retired, the Healy-Rae clan selected Jackie’s son Michael as a candidate. Michael got elected in 2011 and in his first Dail term, he missed 66% of the votes in the Dail, despite being signed in on every voting day to collect his expenses. One of his brightest moments was when he proposed in 2012 to change the Irish number plate system so that the “unlucky” numer 13 wouldn’t appear on the number plates in 2013.
In the elections in 2016 the (mad???) people in Kerry gave him so many votes that shockingly his brother Danny Healy-Rae also got elected. Danny is definitely the oddest of all the Healy-Raes. He is well known for his defense of drinking and driving, had one of his brightest moments when he declared that he didn’t believe in Climate Change because “God above is in charge of the weather and that we here cannot do anything about it.” and this week he added another one to the Healy-Rae clan nonsense list:
On Tuesday he indicated that he believed in fairies (small mythical creatures that look like humans and have magical powers) and it must have been them who caused a dip in a street in Kerry that was repaired to reappear again. He said among many other things “I have a machine standing in the yard right now. And if someone told me to go out and knock a fairy fort or touch it, I would starve first,”. (Fairy forts is the name locals in parts of Ireland have given ring forts from the Early Middle Ages. Fairy forts are believed to be the entrance to the world of fairies and supernatural events are claimed to to happen at fairy forts.)
Oddly, the Irish Times got Manchán Magan, an Irish writer and TV programme maker, to write an article about “Fairy forts: Why these ‘sacred places’ deserve our respect”. In it he writes “It is the abrupt denial of fairies by the vast majority of society that is more pathological than Healy-Rae’s continued belief. After all, our first Uachtarán, Douglas Hyde, and two of our Nobel Laurates, WB Yeats and Samuel Beckett, all believed in fairies.” Well, if these three believed in fairies, then they MUST be real!
Is this one of the “Only in Ireland!! *Sigh*” stories? I am not sure, but it certainly is a “This is odd!!” story!

The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
