Hi all!
This week is MY most favourite event weekend in Dublin. The City Spectacular (former Street Performance World Championship) is a super event and I recommend it CONSTANTLY to everyone. :-) So you will find me there on Saturday and Sunday and I have to get this Dublin Event Guide finished as soon as possible so that I can go to Merrion Square. Pressure!!!
I have to admit that a few years ago there were three TOP events and one of them was even higher on my list, but the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures (which was the top event) is long long gone and unfortunately we also lost the third of the Top3 events, which was the Soul Festival. LUCKILY the City Spectacular is still around!! Did I say that I love it!?!?!?! :-)
[ad]
Some good news on the money side! The outstanding EUR 410 for this month (accumulated from a really bad June) was reduced by EUR 80 last week, so we are now at outstanding EUR 330. Better than last week! But still far from “out of the woods”. Please please help via PayPal here even if you have a few Euro, everything counts!!
+++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 235 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 70,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 235 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I have chosen a quote that I probably mentioned here before because it is soooo good and relevant:
Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Choose wisely.- Vala Afshar
What are you choosing? And how does it affect your life? Good decision? Or maybe a decision that should be reviewed???

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week Andrew G, Marta T, Linda C, Grainne F, Rita B and Rosemary K were so great to help! Thank you! Your help is much needed and VERY much appreciated.
I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
I normally would say that EVERYONE should come to the City Spectacular in Merrion Square, because you can’t miss that great event. ;-) But I am VERY biased as one of the biggest fans of this event and I do realise that there are a good few other good events as well. So, ok…MAYBE go to the Teddy Bears Festival or the Defence Forces Open Day or any of the other many many events. BUT, at least come for 2 hours either Saturday or Sunday to Merrion Square in case you never experienced it before. :-)

Castle Dracula is Dublin’s a very unique venue and a great show for grown-ups on a night out. Enter this incredible Irish Castle Dracula Attraction and travel back in time to enjoy a heart-thumping visit to Castle Dracula. You will meet the weird and wonderful characters from the story of Dracula and learn about Irish writer Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula and was born beside Castle Dracula in Dublin. Brave guests journey through the dark castle tunnels, over spinning bridges to Lucy’s courtyard, up to Dracula’s lair and down to the world’s only Graveyard Theatre for a show where they promise not to bite, unless.. Castle Dracula is a really fun experience like nothing else.
Shows are every Saturday evening and admission is EUR 25 per person or EUR 50 for the VIP treatment. Find out all details on www.castledracula.ie/ and you can buy your tickets via the website or you can ring 01-8512151.
The show is not suitable for children under 14, for pregnant women, for people with a heart condition or for people with a “Fear of Fun”. (Strobe Lighting & Smoke Effects are used.)
I have been at the show a few years ago and I really liked it and would recommend it. Lots of fun, laughter and spookiness.
Have a look at the website and watch the short video at the top! www.castledracula.ie/
Castle Dracula has made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide and if you want to win the pair of tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with DRACULA in the subject line of the mail and with your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

BIG Newmarket Redevelopment
Newmarket is an area in Dublin 8 where the Dublin Food-coop is and that’s where the Dublin Flea Market, the Pure VIntage Market, the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market and the Brocante Market all happen. In addition there is the Green Door Farmer’s Market, which now is home of the Market Collective, a market that last year took place in the Generator Hostel at Smithfield Plaza. And more recently, the Teelings Whiskey Distillery was built there and has a visitor centre.
So this is a busy area and – for markets – an important area. But it also is a somewhat neglected area and with the rising property prices it got rediscovered. So the Food Co-op were told that they will have to leave by the end of this year and I assume the Green Door market is also not stable. The consequence could be that the markets will have to move out of this city area into the “sticks”, maybe an industrial estate somewhere at the outskirts, because the inner city rents for large halls might be out of reach.
This could still happen, but I saw last week on the Liberties Dublin website, that there is a possibility that the markets after a while (the remaking will take some time!) could return to Newmarket Square because the current plans include a indoor market hall!
It would be great if that happened, but we have to see also if it is still a market hall that will be affordable.
What else will be built there? LOTS!!!! Have a look at the article below. It will be a super busy area with apartments, offices, brewery, huge student housing development and a hotel. A MASSIVE change!!!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

City Spectacular 2017 – Best Event of the year!!! ;-)
12:00 – 20:15, Sat 08 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The Laya Healthcare City Spectacular is the BEST event in Dublin (in my opinion) and it is back this weekend from Friday until Sunday from 12:00-20:00. The “centre piece” of this event (it was originally called “Street Performance World Championship” ) are performances from a whole range of street performers from all over the world. There are jugglers, magicians, a sword swallower, acrobats, breakdancers and more.
All performances will go on for about 45 minutes and will be repeated a number of times during the day. On four stages there will be approx. 80 performances per day. The audience will behave like a real audience, that means, you will be asked to reward the performer after the show with money. Coins or notes or your firstborn? Give whatever you can and think is appropriate. But make sure that you bring some money for that purpose. The performers are not paid by the organisers, that part is our job.
In addition to the street performances there will be a huge Food village, and lots of children’s workshops. The pets will get some special treatment this year as well. There is a pet zone. And Imaginosity will also have a tent with an busy programme.
The City Spectacular has something for everyone. All ages are looked after and it is a truly family-friendly event.
If you want to have a look at the timetable, you can download it as a PDF at www.cityspectacular.com/sites/default/files/Dublin%20Website%20Timetable.pdf In the past little programme with maps were handed out at in Merrion Square, but I don’t know if that will be the case again this year,
After so many years of the Street Performance World Championship (and now City Spectacular), it still amazes me that there are people that have lived in Dublin for years, but never heard about this event!
I definitely want to see Pogo Fred and The Mighty Gareth and Kobbler Jay, but I will spend the whole day on Saturday and Sunday there, so I might even get a chance to see them all! :-)
My recommendation: Absolutely do NOT miss this event! It is really the best event in Dublin!!!
Admission is free, but you reward the performers with money after their show.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 09 Jul
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

City Spectacular 2017 – Best Event of the year!!! ;-)
12:00 – 20:15, Sun 09 Jul

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 09 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

14:00 – 16:00, Sun 09 Jul
Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
Clooz is a start-up that will gamify leisure experiences by creating app-based scavenger hunts all around the world. www.clooztravel.com
On Sunday they are organising a free app-based scavenger hunt in Dublin City Centre. Take on this challenge in your own time and pace. Solve riddles and let the app guide you to your next destination. Form a group of 2 or more people (bring your friends or find a group on the spot) and start around 14:00 on Sunday. It will take about 1.5-2 hours and will end at the final destination with a meet-up and an award for the winners.
Sounds like a really interesting event and I will definitely take part. Not this time though, but I hope they will run another one soon! :-)

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 14 Jul

The walks have varying difficulty and duration and the details can be found on the Dublin Mountain Partnership website: www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1
There is only one single walk this month. Pity, considering the weather is better now than in the rest of the year. The walk is on 22 July.
All walks are free, but pre-registration is required (details are on the website).

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Free Wednesday is going, going, nearly gone!
This week it is not a really “odd” topic, but some bad news. If you follow the daily Dublin Event Guide posts on Facebook, you already found out that the Free Wednesday, the one day a month when in the past all state owned and OPW (Office of Public Works)-managed heritage sites were free, did get hollowed out in a bad way for us in Dublin.
Last year the hugely popular Kilmainham Gaol was taken off the list: No more free visits to the Gaol. Because of the very much increased interest due to the 1916/2016 festivities and after a very expensive renovation I could see where they were coming from with that decision. But now Dublin Castle was ALSO taken off the list of free sites on the first Wednesday of the month and I can see that just being the start!!
My prediction is that other sites outside of Dublin will follow in the next few months.
The Free Wednesday (originally it was just called “First Wednesday”) was introduced by Brian Hayes, the junior minister in charge of the OPW, in 2011 to get more people to visit heritage sites. It had exactly that effect! So it worked! If you live in a place, most of us visit the sites less than if we go on holidays somewhere else, so it was mainly for Irish people to learn more about the country and cities around us. Sure, the visitors benefit from it as well, but I think that was an accepted consequence, not the main purpose of the introduction of the First/Free Wednesday.
Is it a coincidence that just a few days after a new junior minister takes over responsibility for the OPW the rules for the First Wednesday get changed? Kevin Moran (who oddly calls himself “Boxer” because he punched and knocked down another boy on a football field when he was 12) took over at the end of June and immediately the rules changed. Do I think that he CAUSED that change? No, probably not! Maybe the OPW management disliked the (politically motivated) First Wednesday for a long time and took the opportunity to railroad the new an inexperienced guy as soon as he arrived.
I think it is a wrong decision!
Just a few days before that not-at-all publicised decision to take Dublin Castle off the list (I only found out because I smelled a rat and rang Dublin Castle.) another decision was publicised WIDELY and without holding back: Children until the age of 12 will get free admission to OPW sites from now on. Before the age limit was 6 years of age. This is a good decision, but I’d say it costs MUCH less than the Free Wednesday and it consequently saves people who are interested in going to heritage sites much less as well.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
