Hi all!
What a week! Last weekend I was at a seminar about book writing and decided to write a book for my “day job” business. I was at this event and suddenly inspiration “came over me” and I had a great idea about a book that should tremendously help our business. It is about telecommunications, so not at all events related, but I Might mention it to you at some point when it is finished.
[ad]
In separate super news for the Dublin Event Guide and for all you readers, I can proudly present to you our new sponsor: Energy provider Energia who delivers cost efficient electricity and gas to Irish homes and businesses has taken over the title sponsorship from Eventbrite who have changed their marketing model for Ireland. Energia already publishes a weekly map of free and low priced events and we will publish this map on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page and also have a link in the Dublin Event Guide itself. You will find it – for now – in the Opportunities section below!
a little bit of bad news arrived in my Inbox as well to balance out all the good news. :-) The e-mail service provider that I am using for the last 5 years will charge VAT from the next bill, which means that our monthly cost for sending the Dublin Event Guide will increase from EUR 190 to EUR 235. Damn!
Thanks so much to everyone who helped with donations this week. A new month has started and the cost went up as you can read above so, if you can, please continue to help via PayPal here !
+++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 235 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 70,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 235 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I selected a quote by speaker and Social Media Strategist Ted Rubin for the Feel Good Slot. He said
Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth. – Ted Rubin
“Know your worth” is Ted Rubin’s strong recommendation – and then don’t let anybody mess with your head. Others can’t decrease your value unless you let them!
————————————–
The Millionaire Mind Intensive weekend seminar is a great course that will teach you how to handle your money better and how to sort out your Financial Life. The seminar is free if you book via the link here. It will take place from Friday 09 June until Sunday 11 June. You might wonder why it is free? Well the organisers will promote their other courses during the weekend and therefore offer this event for free. But I can guarantee you that you a) will not have to buy anything b) shouldn’t consider buying anything unless it is right for you and c) you will get LOTS of really good content over the three days that will make it worth your while to go to a free event. I strongly recommend this seminar! I have been there before and I will be there again. :-) Drop me a mail if you will also go! (dublineventguide@gmail.com)

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Dublin Port Riverfest from Saturday until Monday, the International Harbour Food Festival on Sunday and Monday are the main free events this weekend. During the week another “Free Wednesday” is coming up and the next Science Gallery exhibition will open. It is a BUSY weekend and week, luckily a bank holiday helps us to have more time for events. :-)

Bloom in the Park 2017 – Ticket Competition – Results!

One of the most popular yearly events is Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in Phoenix Park and it is back over the June Bank Holiday weekend! This year’s event is five days long and packed with activities and things to see and experience. Kids go free and adults can buy their tickets on the website www.bloominthepark.com (use the promo code DEG17 and you can save some money).
Bord Bia has given us 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets for a competition and the lucky winners are Oscar Brambila, Liz McCready, Fiona Doris, Lee-Ann Grohn and Edmund Elliott. Congratulations!!!
In addition, Bord Bia is pleased to offer you all a very special ticket offer for 2017. Book on-line only on www.bloominthepark.com before the event and use the promotional code DEG17 to get an extra EUR 2 discount off the advance ticket price to Bloom. (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)
Bloom promises to be a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Quality Kitchen will host cookery demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Fiona Uyema and Brian McDermott.
With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. Have a wonderful day out and make sure you visit the Bord Bia Food Village which celebrates the best of Irish food, showcasing numerous aspects of horticulture and agriculture! And If you don’t fancy driving into the park, use the train or LUAS and then take the courtesy shuttle bus from Heuston station to the 70 acre Bloom site.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Publishing of the Dublin Event Guide in stages!
Some of you might not have realised that recently I tried out a a new way of publishing the Dublin Event Guide and it seems to have some advantages: I am posting the full list of Saturday events as early as possible on Saturday and then add more events for the other days of the week. Only when all is finished I am sending the e-mail and also post the FULL Dublin Event Guide on the website.
The downside is that on Saturday evening you get a mail with events for Saturday. A bit nonsensical, I know but you would understand when you knew how the database system works for creating the Dublin Event Guide. The big upside is that you get ALL Saturday events on the website at www.dublineventguide.com already on Saturday morning because I focus on finishing that first.
It is still not ideal, but hopefully helps a little.

Bring an umbrella!!
The weather on this bank holiday weekend will unfortunately not continue with it’s shiny and warm disposition. There will be some rain on Saturday and Sunday (12:00-14:00) and thern there was a forecast for HEAVY rain for Monday, but it seems that disappeared again. Hurray! Nevertheless, if you plan to go to Bloom in Phoenix Park or to the other festivals that take place this weekend (Riverfest and Dun Laoghaire Harbour Food Festival) make sure that you consider the high probability for rain!
And the rest of the week? At least SOME rain every day!! With a possible exception on Thursday. Is the summer over already? It only started a few days ago on 01 June, but the weather gods need to to better to keep us happy. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Festina Lente Yearly Dog Show
12:00 – 16:00, Mon 05 Jun
Festina Lente, Old Connaught Avenue, Bray, Co. Wicklow
Festina Lente is a not-for-profit organisation which provides occupational, learning and employment opportunities for people whose needs have not been met in mainstream services. They run for example Equestrian Training Programmes and work closely with Dog Training and Grooming company Wonder Paws.
On Monday the Festina Lente & Wonder Paws Dog Show will happen. There will be dog training, dog agility, dog shows, dog grooming, a BBQ and a Garden Plant Sale. The event notice below says that admission ot the gardens is free, but the “classes” are EUR for one and EUR 5 for two. It is not that clear what classes are, though. Are the different dog shows maybe “Classes”? In that case close to nothing would be free on that day. Or are classes real classes where something is taught? Have a look at the website below and hopefully you understand better what is free and what isn’t.

VHI Women’s Mini Marathon
14:00, Mon 05 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
With it’s 10km, the VHI Mini Marathon might be “mini” in distance in comparison to a full size marathon (42km), but it certainly is not a mini event. More than 35,000 women will take part and while taking part is not free, cheering the runners on is completely free and very much appreciated.
The run starts at 14:00, but this year it goes in the “wrong” direction. It starts in Fitzwilliam Street and goes to Leeson Street, then through Donnybrook to UCD, then down Nutley Lane, onwards to Merrion Road through Ballsbridge, taking a slight left at the Ballsbridge Inn Hotel and it finishes in Pembroke Road. The run doesn’t even come near Merrion Square or St. Stephen’s Green this year! So everything different as far as the route is concerned. Keep that in mind. A detailed map is here.
Race Number Collection is on Saturday (10:00-18:00) and Sunday (11:00-16:00) at the Woman’s World Show in RDS Simmonscourt.
The Mini Marathon is not a charity event, but many participants use it to raise money for their chosen charity. Men (and bicycles) are unfortunately not allowed.
There will be music and food stalls at Merrion Square, but the organisers tell me that only participants will get access to that area. Pity, because it would have been a nice venue to meet up with friends and families of participants, but I guess 35-40k of participants tricky enough to organise without even more to join them.
Good luck to every participant and well done for even making it to the starting line! Many many more weren’t even that brave. ;-)

Italian Traditional Music: Now!

This is a pre-concert event, an open rehearsal and conversation with Francesco Turrisi and the group Zahr, to give you a taste of the performance taking place on 07 June with Zahr, the ensemble created by pianist and accordionist Francesco Turrisi and percussionist Andrea Piccioni.
Focusing primarily on the influence that Arabic music has had in many countries touched by the Mediterranean Sea, the ensemble tries to combine Italian traditional music, jazz improvisation, Mediterranean music and early music. The performance features also Francesco Loccisano, a true virtuoso and innovator of the “chitarra battente”, an ancient metal strung guitar traditional to southern Italian regions.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 07 Jun
Various heritage locations in Dublin
Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + The Casino, Marino + Rathfarnham Castle + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Sound Check Launch Party – Science Gallery
18:00 – 20:00, Thu 08 Jun
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition is called “SOUND CHECK” and the launch party takes place on Thursday.
Admission is free, but registration is required via the Eventbrite website here.
My experience is that the pre-launch description of the exhibition doesn’t help much, so you will have to wait until after Thursday before I can tell you what this new exhibition is all about.
The description at the moment says: “Break out your old mix tapes, swing your way to melodic bliss or rock up to our NOISE STUDIO to make your own synth. SOUND CHECK will be a noisy cacophony that will make your hair stand on end and your stomach vibrate! At SOUND CHECK, everyone can make music. Visitors will become performers alongside hackers, designers and scientists, inventing new instruments and collaborating to explore the outer edge of the sounds of the future.”
More details will follow next week. The exhibition will be open from 09 June until 24 September and admission is free.

US-China Relations in the Time of Trump – Talk
18:30 – 20:00, Thu 08 Jun
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) invites to the public lecture “US-China Relations in the Time of Trump” by Sam Crane (W. Van Alan Clark 41 Third Century Professor from Williams College, Massachusetts.)
Admission is free.
“Since coming into office, the Trump administration has reversed itself on several of its campaign positions regarding China. It turns out China will not be labelled a “currency manipulator” and the US government will continue to adhere to the “One-China policy.” Also, suggestions that the US might back away from its close alliances with Japan and South Korea have been superseded by events. What does the apparent inconsistency and uncertainty of US policy toward China mean for East Asian international relations in the coming years?”

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 09 Jun
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
That’s not democratic! – Fine Gael Leadership Competition
After Enda Kenny stepped down (and he was nearly FORCED to step down because he made some nonsensical promises about his longevity in the role of party leader and Taoiseach), the leadership battle between Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar commenced and on Friday was decision day. 10,000 party members, the 223 Fine Gael councillors and 73 senators and PDs (the Parliamentary Party) had an opportunity to vote.
Before the vote already 46 of the 73 members of the Parliamentary Party had declared their support for Leo Varadkar and only 21 for Simon Coveney, but among the 10,000 party members the preferences looked different! About 65% of the party members were supporting Coveney and only 35% were on Varadkar’s side.
But now the odd thing: This is a party in a Western country where you would expect the highest level of democracy and fairness. Right? Not so!!
Oddly, the 10,000 party members only have 25% of “weight” in the final decision, the FG councillors have 10% “weight”, which means that 73 men and women control 65% of the party. You could say that these 73 were elected by the members (and by non-members) and therefore have a double legitimisation. But it is still odd that ONE member of the Parliamentary Party has close to the same weight as nearly 400 party members.
Doesn’t sound very democratic, does it!?
In the end Leo Varadkar won just 35% of the party member votes, but he won 55% of the councillor votes and 70% of the votes from TDs and senators. In total he got 60% of the votes and therefore won.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
