Hi all!
This is the Dublin Event Guide No. 500!! A big milestone and anniversary and I have to admit that I feel a little proud having got there. Some Dublin Event Guide supporters suggested that this event should be celebrated in some form and because it is always a pain to get the money together every month to pay the bills, they suggested to do a fundraiser that would a) get some money for the Dublin Event Guide and b) give something back to two worthy charities.
[ad]
I suggested to give an additional reward to all donors for helping with donations and that is what is on offer at the moment. We had a “soft launch” on the Facebook Page and around EUR 200 came together yesterday, but the goal is closer to a few thousand than a few hundred. I will need EUR 3400 this year for the Dublin Event Guide (for bills and some essential repairs) and then we want to give the charities a nice amount as well! Check the details out in the Dublin News section and please help if you can!
Thanks!
I am posting this Dublin Event Guide again in two stages: First online on the website and the smart phone app/web app and then I will ad more events and send the final edition by mail as soon as it is finished.
This is the FINAL edition.
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This is the last Feel Good Slot with a New Year’s resolution related video! Why today? The coming Monday is the worst day of the year. The day when the world reaches an emotional low with the highest degree of depression. Why? All because of New Year’s resolutions or rather the failure of them. Tony Robbins talks in this video today about 15 January, which is the cut off. 95% of the people already gave up on their New Year’s resolutions on that day. Here is the video (34min) and believe me, it is worth your time!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL5jKptjIQw
I will go to the event (Unleash the Power Within) in London with Anthony Robbins and I am already looking forward to it. :-) It is not cheap, but it certainly is an amazing and outstanding experience. ;-)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week not one singler person helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Please help with “The Big 500 Share”! Find out more in the Dublin News.
I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Nearly all markets are back, so pick one or two of them! :-) In addition I suggest that you go to the Science Gallery this weekend if you haven’t seen the current exhibition yet. It will close already next week, so this is nearly your last chance. ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 and The Big 500 Share!!
This is the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide! And I tell you it has been an interesting and educational ride from when I started in June 2007 with a short mail to 10 friends. 500 weeks later our community has grown to more than 24,000 e-mail magazine subscribers and more than 68,000 Facebook Followers.
To mark this milestone a number of Dublin Event Guide supporters have suggested to collect some money to keep the Dublin Event Guide going and to improve it and also to give a share to two deserving charities. You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better. By the way, none of the money will go to myself, 100% will go to paying bills.
The two charities that won yesterday’s poll on Facebook are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”. Because I know Peter McVerry personally and some relatives of mine had Alzheimer’s, I am VERY happy with your decision. I also asked about the suggested split of the donations between the Dublin Event Guide and the charities and based on your suggestions we will split 30% to the charities and 70% to the Dublin Event Guide until we reach EUR 1000 and everything above will be split 50-50.
As an extra bonus and to thank you for your support, everybody who donates doesn’t just help these two causes, but will also get a “Secret Dublin” guide from me. It will be completed end of February or early March and will help you discover TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

Tivoli Theater to be demolished
I spent more than 2 weeks of my life on the stage of the Tivoli Theater performing there and it was an amazing experience with a hugely successful first run and a little less rewarding second run, but I still really enjoyed it.
This week I read that the Tivoli will probably be removed to make space for a 300-bed “aparthotel”. That means that the theatre will be gone and ALSO the night club (District 8). Planning permission is not yet granted, but even if the parameters change, it seems definite that the days of the Tivoli are counted.

First Fortnight booked out
The Mental Arts Festival “First Fortnight” is coming to an end, but the last few events are all booked out, so I didn’t include them in this week’s Dublin Event Guide. It is great to see that the festival is so popular. There were loads of good events and with the success this year, let’s hope that next year’s festival will be even bigger and better.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 14 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
It is mad how time is flying and this exhibition is already closing again in just one week. Last chance! Don’t miss it!
The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.
It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.
From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

The Clandestinos – Gig
20:00, Sat 14 Jan
The Bowery, 196 Rathmines Road Lower, Rathmines, Dublin 6
The Clandestinos from Galway are a 7-piece band that play roots, reggae, ska and latin and they will be in the newest live music venue in Rathmines, The Bowery.
Venues like that need to attract customers and especially if they provide life music, they need you to stay there longer than just for a gig and help with your drinks purchases to pay for the band etc. So sometimes they are tempted to give inaccurate gig times, but the Bowery decided for this gig to list the time as 17:00-02:30. Hmmmm, that is really overdoing it a bit and risks annoying people! I would expect that the band will be on stage from around 22:00 maybe even later.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 15 Jan
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 15 Jan

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 15 Jan
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Temple Bar Tradfest 2017
25-29 January 2017
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar Tradfest won’t happen until the end of January, so there is still plenty of time to talk about it, right? Well, yes, we can talk about it again in a few weeks, but I want to make sure that the “talking about it” is: “Imagine what great tickets I got”, not “Aww, all booked out, I didn’t get tickets for the gig I wanted to go to.”.
So, the Temple Bar Trad Fest is made up of lots of gigs that are not free, but there are also lots of gigs that are free! Tickets are already available and for the free gigs, you should go here: frontrowsessions.tickets.ie/
The website that contains all non-free gigs but currently doesn’t seem to have a link to the free gigs (!) is here: www.templebartrad.com/

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Irish Life – How to screw your customers!
Have you seen the big Irish Life posters everywhere in town that promise free Multi-Trip Travel Insurance? Sounds interesting, right? Well, I was an Aviva health insurance customer and when Irish Life took over the Aviva health insurance business I became an Irish Life health insurance customer. I wasn’t asked, that just happened, but I could have changed it afterwards if I had wanted to.
My renewal was in October and the price that they quoted me for the renewal was EUR 5 more per month than before, but I think I am on a good plan, so I stayed with them.
When I saw that Irish Life health insurance customers will get Free Travel Insurance, that sounded really good and I was impressed by the company’s care for me. ;-) But then I checked it out and found a different picture.
Yes, there is free Travel insurance, but ONLY for people that renew or move to Irish Life in January or February. If you are already a customer and if your renewal date is by coincidence outside of the time frame of January+February, then suddenly Irish Life is not in the slightest interested in giving you a free Travel Insurance. Not even for half the time or for a quarter of the time. No, you are told to f*** off with your wish to be rewarded in the same way for being with the company as the people that renews in Jan or Feb.
I find it shocking that companies do stuff like that! Why? Well, what do you think I (and probably many others) feel now? I had a good feeling about Irish Life when I heard about and saw the MANY posters of the free travel insurance. The company really went up a few notches in my judgement. But imagine how I feel now after finding out that I am not worthy of getting this bonus because my renewal date is 80 days outside the bracket? My opinion about Irish Life didn’t just drop to where it was before, but it went FAR below my previous opinion and consequently I am now determined to look for another insurer as soon as my renewal date comes up. If a company has customers, they always should reward loyalty at least as highly as new business and in this case, they should find SOME sort of an arrangement for all customers independent from your renewal date.
Stupid move, Irish Life!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
