Hi all!
The regular events are coming back gradually and consequently the total number of free events per week is on the rise again. We don’t know yet how 2017 will turn out regarding free events, but I expect that it will be similar to 2016 minus the 1916-related events. So, plenty to do in Dublin again! ;-)
[ad]
This is the 499th edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) if you haven’t done so yet, please have a look in the Dublin News for a suggestion how we could celebrate the 500 editions next week! Your input is needed for that!!
Thanks to some very helpful Dublin Event Guide supporters, the EUR 190 monthly bill for January is down to EUR 110. Thanks a lot to all helpers! If YOU also can help in any way, I would appreciate it very much! Make a difference here!
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is coming with a double whammy. The first video clip is another Tony Robbins clip to help you with the start of 2017. It is a TED Talk that he did in 2012 and is definitely worth a look! You find it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwFOwyoH-3g Explore what drives you today in your life and how to achieve things. (By the way, Al Gore is in te audience and the joke at 7 minutes is referring to him.)
But even if you don’t watch this great Tony Robbins clip, then watch this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn36cBi9v6A In this video, a 4-year old girl explains the problem with New Year’s resolutions. Soooo cute and sooo smart!!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Barbara Q-B, Sueanne O’H and Cornelia K were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, my pick are the First Fortnight Festival with plenty of events and the David Bowie Festival. You should find something there! Also keep in mind that the current Science Gallery exhibition is soon coming to an end. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for? ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500!!
One week closer to the 500th edition. What do you think about the suggestion of a celebration with a an initiative that generates some funding for the Dublin Event Guide and for a charity? “The Big 500 Dublin Event Guide Share” is meant to help everybody:
You donate some money to the Dublin Event Guide, to enusre that the online versions can be fixed and the newsletter will continue throughout 2017. As a thank you for your donation, you will get a “Secret Dublin” Visitor Guide that will tell you about some of the lesser known and near-secret locations for really interesting free family visits in Dublin (it will be finished in early March) and you will help the Dublin Event Guide to continue to bring you all the great free events news that you love. And at least 10% (more if the initiative is successful) of the donated money will go to one or two deserving charities in Dublin that will be chosen by you.
Let me know what you think about this idea for a 500th edition celebration via dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Big500”. Thanks!!!

Dublin is booming – Loads of new companies
It was reported last week that in 2016 a total of 20,997 new companies were founded and 45.5% are based in Dublin. This is the first time in nearly 20 years that that many new companies were formed. In the same time just 984 insolvencies were recorded. That’s not a bad ratio. So it seems there are lots of new ideas and people full of energy and determination out there. Dublin seems to be booming!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.
It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.
From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 08 Jan
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 08 Jan

18 months ago, artists and facilitators Maisie Lee, Marie Ruane and Adrienne Lee began working with the Twilight Programme in St. Patrick’s Hospital to conceptualise a Radio Documentary that captured real life stories of recovery from mental ill-health. The result is a 40 minute programme of stories and recovery journeys full of deep humanity, hope, positivity, warmth and humour, which highlights that every person has mental health experience and that mental illness does not discriminate.
At this event the documentary will be aired, followed by a post show discussion.

Temple Bar Tradfest 2017
25-29 January 2017
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar Tradfest won’t happen until the end of January, so there is still plenty of time to talk about it, right? Well, yes, we can talk about it again in a few weeks, but I want to make sure that the “talking about it” is: “Imagine what great tickets I got”, not “Aww, all booked out, I didn’t get tickets for the gig I wanted to go to.”.
So, the Temple Bar Trad Fest is made up of lots of gigs that are not free, but there are also lots of gigs that are free! Tickets are already available and for the free gigs, you should go here: frontrowsessions.tickets.ie/
The website that contains all non-free gigs but currently doesn’t seem to have a link to the free gigs (!) is here: www.templebartrad.com/

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
1916-2016 Easter Rising Commemorations – Was it ok?
In 2016 we commemorated the Easter Rising from 1916. Everybody had huge expectations and I think now that we have left 2016 behind, it is time to look back and to assess if the expectations were met or if the whole thing was a big disappointment.
In 2015 I had expected that the following year will be full of funeral re-enactments and other drama and re-lived pain. Sinn Fein were positioning themselves to be in charge of Dublin City (through the position of “Lord” Major) and it seemed that they wanted to run the whole show.
When 2016 arrived it immediately started with a flurry of events. Talks, discussions, tours, music, poetry, theatre etc and it looked as if this would continue throughout the year. The events were mostly of high quality with very dedicated and passionate people running it and it all culminated in a great (RTE-organised) event on Easter Monday that had whole Dublin buzzing with activity. The streets around Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square were packed with people, O’Connell Street was more than full and Smithfield Plaza was as busy as I had seen it never before. There were concerts, historic car exhibitions, historic trade demonstrations, talks, theatre and everything else you can imagine under the umbrella of “cultural commemoration”. It was an outstanding day.It was very surprising that RTE got overall responsibility as the event had nothing directly to do with TV or Radio, but they did a really great job in keeping all together in that one day.
After Easter Monday, however, it all ended very abruptly. The odd exhibition continued and for the rest of the year only a small number of talks popped up but otherwise it was all done and dusted.
This latter part disappointed me! I didn’t think that all was discussed and sorted by Easter Monday, so the rest of the year could easily have had more activities. Before Easter Monday it was nearly a bit much because all was crammed in the first four months of the year and Easter Monday was – as mentioned – a true highlight and couldn’t have been much better.
Luckily NO political party claimed “ownership” of the commemorations and no one party had bigger influence over it than another party. And luckily also, the commemorations were a celebration and not a sad, drab affair.
So all in all, I would give 2016 a 8 out of 10 as far as 1916 commemorations are concerned. I learned a lot, understood a lot better afterwards and was (for the first time since I live in Ireland) impressed by RTE.
Now we have to ask, what is next. The Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) is next, followed by the Irish Civil War (1922-1923) and history get a lot more controversial at that time. But maybe we can find some positive common denominator there as well?
