A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Dublin Book Festival will run from 11-13 November in a variety of venues, but with a higher concentration of events in Smock AlleyTheatre. There will be non-free events, but also a large amount of free events. The sixth edition of the yearly Dublin Art Book Fair will take place in Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. There will be informal conversations, workshops, readings, performances and artist-led programmes. The Dublin Art Book Fair is a venue for artists, writers and publishers to feature new releases and present their publications. The fair engages established and emerging publishers in a large-scale event delivered over four days dedicated to the appreciation of printed work.

This year over 60 exhibitors, artists and publishers (national and international) who have devoted themselves to the medium of “the book as art” will attend and will celebrate ‘Artists as Writers’.

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Refugees and Asylum seekers in Ireland are not allowed to work. So they need to get help to survive and it could take years until a decision about their status is made. However instead of getting money, they will supplied with goods (food, clothes, hosuing etc). It totally destroys the self-worth of the individuals and is a very inefficient system and I am sure there are MANY other problems with that system.

On Saturday a protest march against the Direct Privision System will take place. It starts at 13:30 at the Garden of Remembrance and the march will then go to the Central Bank Plaza in Dame Street.

Science Week 2016 takes place from 13-20 November. There are hundreds of events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 80 events are in Dublin and 38 of them are free events in Dublin for adults and families. A good few of the events require pre-booking (and some are booked out already).

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

The “New To You Fashion Sale” is yearly fashion sale in aid of St Michaels House. It will take place in the RDS Concert Hall and admission is free.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The Remembrance Run by Athletics Ireland is a 5km run to commemorate your friends and family that have passed away. Despite the sad theme, it is a very positive and uplifiting event. And the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will provide the uplifiting songs to inspire the 3500 (!!) runners from 09:45

Participation in the run is not free, but you can cheer on the runners and hear the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir for free.

Have you ever dreamed of going into space or working in the space industry? Have you ever wondered how it would feel to be weightless?
As part of Science Week the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, the Irish Underwater Council (IUC) and Science Foundation Ireland are inviting to a “Diving into Space” event. A unique event combining space, weightlessness and diving into a memorable experience for all ages.

The event will kick off with a talk by Aquanaut Dr. Marc O’ Griofa who recently took part in NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations programme (NEEMO) to the bottom of the sea, where the crew evaluated tools and techniques being tested for future deep space exploration. He will talk about the science of weightlessness and how Scuba diving is used to train astronauts.

After the presentation, Ireland’s top Scuba instructors will bring you through the experience of weightlessness in the National Aquatic Centre.

The talk is free and will take place in tthe National Sports Campus Conference Centre, Blanchardstown. Then the water based part will start at 13:30 and take place in the National Aquatic Centre. A small fee of EUR 5 will be charged for the water based activity.

Every Sunday, the National Botanic Gardens invite to two guided walks. The first one is at 12:00 and the second one at 14:30.

To ceelbrate Science Week, the National Print Museum is inviting to Printfest. The Museum’s volunteers will demonstrate printing presses within the permanent exhibition and you can see machines such as the mighty Wharfedale and the ingenious Linotype in action and hear stories of the volunteer’s time in the print industry.

There will be plenty of family friend activities, with the opportunity to print your own letterpress poster. The Press Café is also open.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

This is a drama set after WWII against the backdrop of the Algerian War. After losing their family home in Algeria, three brothers are scattered across the globe. Eventually they reunite in Paris, where freedom becomes a battle to be fought and won.

The film is in Arabic and French with English subtitles. (2010, 15A (138 min)). It is screened in association with the Dublin Arabic Film Festival 2016.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Dublin & Glendalough mark 800 years as United Dioceses this year and this Sunday, November 13, a week of celebrations surrounding the feast day of St Laurence O’Toole will begin in Christ Church Cathedral. Events include the world premiere of a specially commissioned anthem and the first performance of two new hymns along with free public lectures and an exhibition.

On Sunday at 15:40, an Ecumenical Evensong sung by the choirs of Christ Church and The Palestrina Choir will take place. “Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will preach. Christ Church Cathedral Choir will perform a world premiere of a new commission celebrating St Laurence O’Toole marking the 800th anniversary of the union of the dioceses of Dublin & Glendalough. The new anthem has been composed for this service by the English composer, David Bednall, who has a growing reputation as one of Britain’s finest composers (Gramophone Magazine). Two newly commissioned hymns, celebrating St Laurence O’Toole, will also receive their first performance. The hymn texts, which have been translated and versified by Canon Dr John Bartlett for this service, come from the 13th century Vita of St Laurence O’Toole.”

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

This today is the very last free gig by Donal and Anto ever in JJ Smyth’s because it will close next Sunday (20 November). An end of a venue that had a huge influence on the Dublin Jazz & Blues scene. Let’s hope that all Jazz & Blues musicians and fans will find an adequate home again at some stage soon.

Join the search for Cervantes’ DNA! A convent in Madrid is currently the focus of a project to identify the tomb containing the remains of Miguel de Cervantes, 400 years after his death.

The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Molecular biochemistry and Biology (SEBBM) is hosting a discussion and practical workshop for students from 11-17 years with the title “The human genome through the ages: in search of Cervantes’ DNA”.

“The workshop will involve discussion of the genetic research currently underway. In addition, the contribution which has been made by biochemistry and molecular biology in the 21st century to mapping the human genome will be assessed, along with the discovery of DNA and the resultant advances in forensic medicine and criminology.

Students will learn about advances in archaeological, historical and anthropological research currently being employed by a team in the Convento de las Trinitarias (Convent of the Trinitarians), Madrid, in an attempt to identify the tomb containing the actual remains of Miguel de Cervantes.”

Students will then extrac and isolate DNA and will be get a pendant container with a sample of their own DNA as a memento.

The Science Week Lecture “Digital Discoveries: The 3D recording of Ancient Irish Ogham Stones” with Dr Nora White will take place on Tuesday.

Dr Nora White is the principle investigator of the Ogham in 3D project, based in the School of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Her talk will present the project being undertaken by them and demonstrate how digital technologies in the form of 3D laser scanning and Photogrammetry are used to record and digitise as many as possible of the approximately four hundred surviving ogham stones in Ireland.

The Science Gallery will hold three talks in Science Week to discuss global catastrophes. The first talk will look at extra-planetary threats.

What can we do to prevent a large asteroid or comet from hitting us and causing a mass extinction? What technologies and equipment do we have to determine asteroid trajectories, and how can we protect ourselves against gamma ray bursts, solar flares and other threats? Do we have the technology to divert an asteroid’s path away from earth, or destroy it outright? How would we survive the explosions, tsunamis, acid rain and temperature spikes that are sure to follow a massive impact?

A panel will explore humanity’s best options to ensure survival in the event of planetary catastrophe. The panel will be chaired by by Joseph Roche, Assistant Professor of Science Education at TCD and the other members are Mary Bourke, Assistant Professor of Geography at TCD, David McKeown, Assistant Professor of Design Innovation in the TCD School of Engineering and Niamh Shaw, engineer, scientist and artist.

This is a One-Day-Seminar “A New System of Banking for SME’s – Simply Different” where the German Sparkassen model for the development of local public banks will be investigated and discussed.

A Facebok Event Page asks you to come to a “March Against Corruption and TD Pay Increases”, but since this march is planned for a Wednesday afternoon, I am not sure if this is a genuine event.

If it genuine (and that is definitely possible!), then the organisation doesn’t seem to be keen to maximise the effect of their event because if only a handful of people attend (I would assume that most people work around that time!) they might do more damage to their reputation and cause then good.

“Speaking Words: Poetry and prose readings of writers own work” with poet Seán Ó Meara (An Bhé Dhátheangach (The Bilingual Muse)) is taking place. The Liquor Rooms together with The Irish Times and New to the Parish, are inviting to a new series of discussions about the work of immigrant artists. How have they been influenced and formed by their political environments? How does an artist’s cultural identity affect their work? The Run in the Dark is a 5 and 10km run in Dublin’s Dockland’s on Wednesday. It is not a free event, but you can cheer the runners on and in addition the run will affect traffic in the area, so two reasons to mention it.

The Start is at 20:00 at Custom House Quay but in an unusual decision, there are TWO separate Finish lines. The 5km run ends on City Quay on the South Side and the 10km run finishes at Custom House on the North Side.

Astronomy Ireland is setting up some of the most powerful telescopes in Ireland, to show you the Jupiter, Orion and the Pleiades Star Cluster among other objects.

If cloudy, a telescope exhibition and workshop will be held demonstrating how to use telescopes and a short talk will be given.

Science Week 2016 takes place from 13-20 November. There are hundreds of events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 80 events are in Dublin and 38 of them are free events in Dublin for adults and families. A good few of the events require pre-booking (and some are booked out already).

Guinness World Record holding and ex-professional circus performer James Soper presents this unique show that combines top-quality circus skills and reveals the science that underpins it. The show is made up of live demonstrations, a multimedia presentation and lots of volunteer help.

“The Archaeology of a Decade of War: The Fortress Prison: the archaeology of Victorian Spike Island, Co. Cork” by Dr. Barra O’Donnabhain is a talk about the Spike Island Archaeological Project which is investigating the archaeology of the Victorian convict depot that operated at Spike Island in Cork harbour from 1847-1883.

The Project explores the material remains of the prison and the triangle of relationships between convicts, their guards and the institution and pays particular attention to the lived experience of incarceration and the impact of the institution on prisoners health.

Tech Meets Arts for Science Week 2016: This is a public lecture by Dr Ahmed Selim (Research Fellow at CONNECT) organised by CONNECT Centre for Future Networks, Trinity College Dublin.

Dr Ahmed Selim has developed a remarkable technique capable of producing head portraits in the style of a given artist. Based on neural network computing, Dr Selim will explain the technology behind the technique, provide sample portraits and discuss further applications.

A New Way of Seeing: on the Development of Modern Chinese Painting

The lecture will encourage participants to look a closer look at the paintings in the Library’s temporary exhibition ‘Hong Ling: A Retrospective’. The paintings, which blend together Eastern and Western painting practices, are part of the history of the cultural encounter between the two worlds. The talk will explain how the Western way of seeing has contributed to the development of Chinese paintings in the past century and how it is also evident in the paintings by Hong Ling.

Photographer David Monahan’s “Beyond Leaving” is the most recent expression of a collaborative project ongoing since 2010.

The lecture “Seed exchanges, marriage exchanges, and the dynamics of cassava diversity” with Ethnobotanist Dr. Marc Delêtre will explore the intricate story of people and cassava in Gabon, central Africa.

In small farming communities, circulation of crop varieties is often channelled by marriage networks. Because of the way they structure social networks of exchange between kin (related by descent) and affines (related by marriage), marriage rules favour or limit exchanges of seeds among communities and modify patterns of cassava diversity at the regional level.

The Christmas Lights on Henry Street will be switched on at 17:00 on Thursday. If the lights go on at 17:00 that means that the entertainment probably starts before that. Or does the entertainment maybe start at 17:00 and the lights go on afterwards. DublinTown are VERY vague on this.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

Dr Eve Bruce is a specialist burns surgeon on assignment with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in the Gaza Strip, where she performs complex surgeries on patients in a post-war Gaza. At this event Eve reflects on her work so far and the on-going medical needs of people and a health system affected by conflict and occupation.

As part of Science Week 2016, the Teagasc Food Research Centre in Ashtown is open to the public for a free family friendly event on Thursday.

You are invited with your family to a friendly evening of interactive demos, exciting talks, live music and even a Great Scientist Bake Off Competition. Come and find out the science behind what makes the perfect steak, how clean your hands really are, what exactly those food labels mean and more. A shuttlebus will be available from Ashtown Roundabout and Ashtown Train station, and there will be free parking on the night.

The exhibition “The Path to Freedom: pictures illustrating the journey refugees are taking from war-torn countries to Europe” will be on show in the Rathmines Library. from 17 Nov – 17 Dec.

The exhibition features some of photojournalist Artur Widak’s most moving and thought-provoking images, many of which have appeared in publications such as The Guardian, Huffington Post, The Independent (UK), Le Monde among many others . They portray, all too vividly, the hardships and sadnesses that the Syrian refugees are enduring. It is impossible to view these pictures and not be incensed at the ongoing inhumanity of it all.

The Contemporary Music Centre closes its 2016 Salon Series with a very special concert of new contemporary works.

This concert features RTE National Symphony Orchestra principal musicians Adele Johnson (viola) and Martin Johnson (cello), premiering new works especially commissioned by them for viola and cello by Irish composers Jane O’Leary, Judith Ring and Amanda Feery.

There will be a wine reception before the concert at 19:00 in the venue.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.
