Hi all!
This week’s Dublin Event Guide covers Culture Night in addition to all the events for this weekend and the coming week and with approximately 330 Culture Night events, you can imagine that I will only be able to “skim the surface”. I love love love Culture Night, but for compiling the next Dublin Event Guide, it will cause a problem because it is on Friday evening, my main shift when creating this weekly publication. I will find a way though! ;-)
[ad]
I posted the first Facebook update a lot earlier than on most Saturdays today, so that you know at least the headline events and will use my “two-stage publishing process” for this Dublin Event Guide again now. First I will update the smartphone app and the website, then I will add more events and once all is completed, the e-mail will be sent.
This is the FINAL edition.
++++
Donations dried up a bit, so this week we are running short of what is needed to reach the remaining EUR 150 before the end of the month. I need your help with that, so if you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Make a difference here!
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is a little more cryptic than normal, or just let’s say “less obvious”.
Believe your beliefs .. Doubt your doubts, if not you will … Doubt your beliefs. – Rich Simmonds
It really means that you have to commit to be successful. Commit to your beliefs, but ultimately commit to what you want to do/achieve(stand for. Because if you don’t commit, you will start questioning EVERYTHING.
By the way, if you like these quotes and would like to see more of them, follow me on twitter at www.twitter.com/joergst were I post one or two motivational quotes every day. And if you are on Twitter anyway, also follow the Dublin Event Guide on Twitter at www.twitter.com/DublinEventG

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Aislinn T and Barry M were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend my picks are the Airfield Festival of Food, the Dublin Fashion Festival (not that amazing, to be honest, unless you like Fashion shows and shopping, but if you are into that, you have to be part of the DFF) and the SARI Soccerfest is for the football fans. On Sunday is also the Farmleigh Family Day and the Fusion Sudnay World Culture Market and I should also mention the Cabineteely Carnival.
The other definite Pick, is obviously Culture Night on Friday, the best cultural event in Ireland. :-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Electric Picnic Disgrace & Refugee Help
I have to admit that I was shocked when I saw during the week what a mess the Electric Picnic visitors left behind in Stradbally. It is really disgraceful that people bring their sh*t and then leave it on a field for others to clean up and it makes it even worse that a charity who asked for people to fold their (unwanted) tents and donate them so that they can be used for refugees had to find that most tents that were left behind were unusable.
www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/charity-finds-most-tents-left-at-electric-picnic-unusable-1.2781569
Help is needed for refugees and with the weather getting colder, their situation is not improving. But interestingly the refugee problem is seemingly still treated by the Irish government as a problem far far away that has nothing to do with us. Wasn’t there a commitment to take in the (lousy) amount of 4000 refugees? It is the least we should do, but it doesn’t seem to be happening. If you think Ireland should do more, check this campaign out:

Central Bank for sale
Do you have a bit of money (like 65 million) and want a nice gaff? Well, the Central Bank is selling their building in Dame Street and you can have it. It is certainly not the pretiest building (all Sam Stephenson-designed buildings are ugly, at different degrees), but it is big, spacious and in a great location.
There were suggestions in the past that it should be bought by Dublin City and then could be used as a cultural centre, but I have doubts that that will happen. If banks still had money, I would expect a bank to buy it, but they don’t, so maybe Apple wants it? The government might even give it to them for free. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.
Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – October (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Airfield Festival of Food
09:30 – 17:00, Sat 10 Sep
Airfield Estate, Overend Ave, Dundrum, Dublin 14
A few years ago, Apple iOS Maps thought that Airfield Estate is an airport, but that couldn’t be more wrong! Instead Airfield Estate is a working Farm and a Garden in the middle of Dundrum. It was originally a private farm, but is now a charitable organisation and opens its doors every day to the public. They do run interesting events, but you never read about it in the Dublin Event Guide because admission is not free (EUR 10 for adults and EUR 5 for children).
———-
On Saturday and Sunday, Airfield Estate is now inviting to a Festival of Food and this time admission is free.
The mission of Airfield is to inspire people to refresh their connection with food and the land it comes from and this festival is aiming for exactly that as well. There will be 13 food, farming and nature related talks on Saturday and Sunday (for example “Biodiversity and Bees” or “Nutrition and Diet” or “Food Too Good To Waste”). Throughout the day there will be an Art Exhibition, Children’s Art Workshop, Music Centre for Children, Children’s Grow Centre and a Farm Obstacle Course and the eggs will be collected from the hen house (10:00), the Jersey Cows will be milked (10:30), a Tour of the Family House on the Estate will take place (11:30) and wild food will be foraged. Some non-free workshops for adults will also be offered.
And on top of all that a huge food market with more than 35 food stalls will will be on site.
The full schedule is here: www.airfield.ie/uncategorized/weekend-activities-festival-of-food-2016/
Sounds like a great event with plenty to do!

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Sep
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.
It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Airfield Festival of Food
09:30 – 17:00, Sun 11 Sep

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 11 Sep
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.
I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 11 Sep

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 11 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

St Caillín and the Book of Fenagh (1516-2016) – Talk
13:00, Wed 14 Sep
Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2
The lunchtime lecture “St Caillín and the Book of Fenagh (1516-2016)” with Dr Padraig O Riain (MRIA, UCC) will be given on Wednesday.
“The Book of Fenagh, an Irish manuscript commissioned in 1516, tells the story of the life of St Caillín, founder of the early Christian monastic community at Fenagh. The manuscript reflects the politics of early sixteenth-century north Connacht, with the saint’s life being used for propaganda purposes. It is the work of an expert scribe, Muirgheas Ó Maoilchonaire, and is an excellent example of late medieval Irish manuscript production. The exhibition in the Academy Library tells the story of scribes and scholars associated with the manuscript.”

Oktoberfest 2016
12:00 – 00:30, Thu 15 Sep
George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 15 Sept – 02 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.
Opening hours are Mon-Wed 12:00-23:30, Thur-Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.
The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.
Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a food voucher if you want to buy any alcohol. Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

Opera Librettists and Libretti – Talk
13:00, Thu 15 Sep
Central Library, Ilac Shopping Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1
A series of three illustrated talks by Michael Grant will discuss Opera Librettists and Libretti. Admission is free, but booking is required via 01-8734333 Ext 5.
Thurs 08 Sept: ‘Lorenzo da Ponte and Mozart’
Thurs 15 Sept: ’19th Century Grand Opera’
Thurs 22 Sept: ‘The librettists of Verdi and Puccini’
In these three talks, illustrated by musical examples, Michael will look at the lives and work of the literary artists who provided the plots and the libretti for many of the great opera composers.
[And if you are not sure what “libretti” really means, here is the definition that I had to look up myself because I wasn’t sure:
A libretto is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera or operetta. Libretti is the plural of libretto and the librettist is the person that creates/writes the libretto.]

Dublin Park(ing) Day
10:00, Fri 16 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
Park(ing) Day was started in 2005 in San Francisco and has reached many other cities by now. On this one day per year participating cities are turning car parking spaces into small public parks, games or art installations with the goal to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play.
In previous years a map was posted on the relevant websites here:
www.dublinparkingday.org/
www.facebook.com/Dublin-Parking-Day-536323116446244/
The map showed all the car park spaces in Dublin that were turned into mini-parks by a variety of organisations and individuals.
I am not expecting that map to appear before Wednesday or even Thursday, but once it is there, have a look to see if you can get to one of the temporary parks and have a chat with the creators. On the website above you can find some pictures from other Park(ing) Days in previous years.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 16 Sep

Culture Night
16:00, Fri 16 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
Culture Night is the best cultural event in Dublin that you can imagine. It is a one day, or more accurate a one evening event that celebrates culture, creativity and arts. All sort of cultural organisations invite to shows, exhibitions, talks, concerts, walks, workshops, Open Door events and anything else you can imagine that would fall under “culture” between 16:00 and 23:00 on Friday 16 Sept.
And everything is available for NO admission charges, even venues that normally charge, waive their charges on that evening. Some events, however do require registration and in other places you have to work your way through a (long) queue before you can get in.
By the way: Culture Night is an Ireland-wide event, but as you know, the focus of the Dublin Event Guide is the Greater Dublin area.
I find it really really hard to pick some of the free events that you should definitely go to, because there is such a vast amount of great things happening, so I strongly suggest that you go to www.culturenight.ie/home/dublin-events/ and have a look at the programme. Another good option for planning your night is to download the Culture Night app (available for Android and iOS). OR you can download the full 53 pages big programme brochure here.
Despite finding it hard to pick, I made an attempt of selecting some outstanding events form the more than 330 (!!!) events on offer and I am listing them separately in this Dublin Event Guide.
Dublin Bus had intended to offer very helpful free Culture Night Buses on four routes in the City Centre, BUT “thanks” to the Dublin Bus drivers strike this might not happen and in that case it will not only interfere with that free offer but also with your ability to come to the City Centre. 16 Sept is currently one of the days of the bus driver strike.

The Casino – Tours – Culture Night
16:00 – 20:00, Fri 16 Sep
The Casino, Malahide Road, Marino, Dublin 3
The Casino in Marino got its name not because it has anything to do with gambling, but because it is a small house (Casa). It was completed in 1775 and really looks like a small Greek temple, but that is just an illusion as it actually contains 16 rooms on three floors!!
On Culture Night you can visit the Casino for free and take part in a (free) guided tour.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
“Bakewell Tarts” and “Tear & Share Brioche”
Have you ever heard of “Bakewell Tarts”? Why are they called that? Are other tarts not baked well? And why do we use that term, for these little shortcrust tarts and don’t just call them what they are? For example “Shortcrust Tarts”??
Or have you ever heard of “Tear & Share Brioche”? Why??? Who came up with that name and why did it stick? I am NOT sharing my Brioche, so get lost! And I am also not tearing it usually. Still most people have a good idea what Tear & Share Brioche is.
Language is odd!
If you have heard neither of the two names, type it into Google and you will EASILY find what I am referring to.
