A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The National Heritage Week is coming to an end, but there is still two more days. It is a week long festival (20-28 August) that will build awareness and education about our heritage, its conservation and preservation. There will be more than 2000 events all over Ireland and hundreds of them are in Dublin.

From guided tours via concerts and talks to Family events, it will be a very busy week for anybody who is interested in Heritage or at least has an open mind. The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

A Fair Land is a project in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Courtyard where a pre-1916 village is built and will operate from 12-28 August.

This project will develop a system for living derived from basic and simple resources used in a creative way. Visitors will have opportunities to eat, make, think or trade and through that process to learn, copy, assimilate and teach. With a focus on creating objects that are useful, desirable and achievable, A Fair Land will present an active and tangible representation of the place of creativity in society, creating a space for families, friends and strangers to gather, get involved, and experience alternative perspectives on living. The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Every now and then Christ Church Cathedral runs a market in their “front garden”. It is a poorly promoted market (not even the Christ Church Facebook Page mentions it!!) and never mad busy, but you will find some good food stalls there AND our good friends from www.Paperbear.ie will sell their amazing pop-up cards there. Reason enough to pop-in while you are in the area. ;-)

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon is free for the whole year!!

The Great Pink Run is a 10km and 5km run (or walk or jog) for Breast Cancer Awareness.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is offering an absolutely outstanding programme of events for Heritage Week. They really pulled out all the stops and have something for everybody. The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

On the final weekend of Heritage Week, the Merrion Square Open Day brings you free tours and talks in buildings around Merrion Square.

I strongly recommend for example a visit to No 29 ESB’s Georgian House Museum (10:00-17:00). Or the exhibition of early recording and playback devices in the Irish Traditional Music Archive (10:00-17:00).
And the Institute of Archaeologists will have an Archaeofest 2016 in Merrion Square (11:00-16:00).

The People’s Photography Exhibition is like the People’s Art Exhibition an exhibition and “market” on the rails around St. Stephen’s Green. The only difference is that this time the art is photos and not paintings.

The People’s Photography Exhibition only takes place ONCE every year and this weekend (Saturday & Sunday) is this year’s date.

Admission is free and you are invited to view only, but also to buy if you like what you see.

Come to the Natural History Museum during Merrion Square Open Day and do the Summer Sun trail. Admission is free.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Occasionally I come across events where I don’t understand at all what the event is about. This is one of them!

Here is the description:

“After an absence of several years VATeir – the Irish vACC of the VATSIM network – is glad to announce its 2016 Fly-in. Taking place in the Cloud Suite of the Carlton Hotel at Dublin airport, you will be able to watch VATeir’s finest controllers in action as they control virtual pilots live on the VATSIM network, while outside you will be able to take in an unobstructed view of Dublin airport’s ramp from the outdoor balcony.”

But a bit of research reveals:
VATeir is the Irish vACC
vACC is a Virtual Area Control Centre, a type of virtual air navigation service
VATSIM stands for “Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network” and is an online flying network.

VATeir provides training for anyone wanting to become a virtual air traffic controller in Ireland and at this event virtual pilots and virtual Air Traffic Controllers cooperate and run the Irish airspace.

Admission is free for spectators. (EUR 20 for participants.)

At the Heritage Week Open Day “100 Years of Irish Art from the Archive” find a wealth of archival material on display in the National Galley.

When I hear “Craft” I think of “Arts & Crafts”, but that is not what this market at the Teelings Distillery is about. Instead it is about Craft Beer and Foods.

You will find Banana Bread, Craft Beer, Crisps, Cupcakes, Butter, Granola, Doughnuts, Browies, Chocolate and Marmalade at this market and you might be surprised in how many of them Teeling’s Whiskey can be found on the ingredients list.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

There is an Open Day at the Irish Railway Records Society with open access to Library, Archives and Small Exhibits Museum of railway memorabilia in the former railway goods offices at Dublin Heuston Station.
The IRRS was founded in 1946 and celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. It is a voluntary organisation dedicated to the study of the history and operations of Irish Railways.

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The market has now grown to 40 stalls offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

Dodder Action and Tim Clabon from the Irish Wildlife Trust are running this event, a wlak along the River Dodder from Milltown to Rathfarnham to look for signs of otters and kingfishers and all other wildlife on the way.

A free Family Comedy Weekend will entertain young and old at Farmleigh House this weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

The event will cover family friendly stand-up comedy shows with the Punch Lion Kids’ Comedy Club, comedy workshops, amusing story-telling and silly walkabout performers.

Performers for the stand-up comedy shows (Age 6+) are Joe Rooney (Father Ted), Paul Tylak (The Secret of Kells), Reuben (RTEjr), Sharon Mannion (Dublin Comedy Improv), Marcus O’Laoire (Republic of Telly) and Kevin Gildea (Father Ted).

Aoife Moore (‘Tiny’ Improv Group/Fair City) will run the comedy workshops for children aged 5 – 7 and 8 – 12. (First come, first served!!)

Road Closures at least until 13:00 due to the Great Pink Run will make access to Farmleigh House more difficult than usually.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The Dalkey Lobster Fest was meant to take place from Fri 26 – Sun 28 August, but then suddenly at around 19:00 on Thursday evening, the Facebook Page and website are changed and the statement is added that “Dalkey Lobster Festival has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.” Soon after, comments on Facebook appear that indicate that the festival is NOT cancelled, but certain events are cancelled.

What’s going on? – It turns out that the that the events at the Tramyard and the Kids Zone are cancelled (and the Tramyard controls the Lobster Fest website and Facebook Page). But all the other events that are not related to the Tramyard will go ahead as planned, so spread the word and don’t be put off by one businesses change of plans.

I am not sure if the Lobster Festival Parade (planned for Sunday 14:00) is cancelled or not, but that’s a minor issue.

So, all the free music performances in pubs and restaurants and the other events (e.g. Cookery Demo with wholefood chef Oliver McCabe) are definitely going ahead:

Donnbrook celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Church of the Sacred Heart. Well, you and I would call it the 150th anniversary! But the Diocese of Dublin calls it the “Sesquicentenary”, it is the same, just sounds lots more complicated.

The Heritage Office of Dublin City Council have organised a series of free walking tours during Heritage Week and one of these walks is “Flat blocks and Cottages: North City Centre Housing, 1870-1970” with Dr Eellen Rowley.

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Saturday at 14:00 until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which so many Irishmen died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

A free Family Comedy Weekend will entertain young and old at Farmleigh House this weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

The event will cover family friendly stand-up comedy shows with the Punch Lion Kids’ Comedy Club, comedy workshops, amusing story-telling and silly walkabout performers.

Performers for the stand-up comedy shows (Age 6+) are Joe Rooney (Father Ted), Paul Tylak (The Secret of Kells), Reuben (RTEjr), Sharon Mannion (Dublin Comedy Improv), Marcus O’Laoire (Republic of Telly) and Kevin Gildea (Father Ted).

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

A 5km run in inflatable Sumo Suits in aid of Purple House Cancer Support Centre will take place on Bray Sea Front on Sunday. It is a fundraising event, so you can imagine that it is not free to take part, but it is free to watch. The Bray Gospel Choir will also sing for your entertainment.

The Dalkey Lobster Fest was meant to take place from Fri 26 – Sun 28 August, but then suddenly at around 19:00 on Thursday evening, the Facebook Page and website are changed and the statement is added that “Dalkey Lobster Festival has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.” Soon after, comments on Facebook appear that indicate that the festival is NOT cancelled, but certain events are cancelled.

What’s going on? – It turns out that the that the events at the Tramyard and the Kids Zone are cancelled (and the Tramyard controls the Lobster Fest website and Facebook Page). But all the other events that are not related to the Tramyard will go ahead as planned, so spread the word and don’t be put off by one businesses change of plans.

I am not sure if the Lobster Festival Parade (planned for Sunday 14:00) is cancelled or not, but that’s a minor issue.

So, all the free music performances in pubs and restaurants and the other events (e.g. Cookery Demo with wholefood chef Oliver McCabe) are definitely going ahead:

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

The Heritage Office of Dublin City Council have organised a series of free walking tours for Heritage Week. “The Architectural, Social and Commerical life of O’Connell Street” with Natalie De Róiste is the last walk of the series.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

A weekly gig night for new bands is running in Arthur’s Pub. It is called “Anocht” and happens every Tuesday. The line-up can be found on the Facebook Page below.

In addition to the music, there is usually also a visual show.

The Comedy Crunch is a free Stand Up comedy event every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Every week different comedians entertain and on top of good comedy you will get free ice cream. Admission is free. The line-up can be found via the Comedy Crunch Facebook Page (see link below).

The Lounge Quintet plays this gig every Tuesday: Jazz Standards, Latin and Bebop. Often guest musicians and singers join them. Admission is free, donations are welcome.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Every Tuesday, a pub quiz is taking place in the Woolshed.

Admission is free. Max team size is 6 people.

The laws that define how companies are are formed and how they have to operate in Ireland have changed COMPLETELY last year and the new 2ß14 Companies Act describes all the new rules. If you are running a company OR if you plan to start a company, you HAVE to inform yourself about these new laws.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the National Gallery invites to Drop-in drawing sessions for adults and teens. All materials will be provided.

The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (15:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday until September.

In previous years the missing food and drink stalls (probably to protect the pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar) was mentioned by visitors as a critique.

This August Children’s Films will be screened in a variety of Libraries in Dublin. Admission is free and no booking required.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. “Careers in Culinary Arts and Hospitality” is a talk with James Murphy (chairman & coordinator of Licenced Trade Development Programme, DIT).

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

The August Inn Jokes Comedy night will featue Fred Cooke, Eleanor Tiernan, and Tom O’Mahony. MC and organiser is comedian Colm O’Regan.

The great Mutefish, a multi-national 6-piece band that plays a fusion of Eastern European music with strong Irish Trad influences, are playing this second gig in one week in Whelan’s.

Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).

The Harleys are a popular coverband and they will be in the Mezz every Wednesday at midnight.

Today is the first day of autumn!!

After being taught incorrectly by Primary School teachers for years, it is difficult for some to correct their view of the world and to accept that autumn is September + October + November, but luckily more and more people get their head around it and even the public libraries have now corrected their views.

This is a public tour of the exhibition “Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats”. It will happen on the first Thursday of each month during 2016. The tour will introduce the life and work of the poet and following the tour there is an opportunity to listen to a selection of voices speaking some of his best loved poems, including Easter 1916.

And Concetto La Malfa will launch his book “Apocalypse Tomorrow”, in which he prophesizes what could happen to our world in the next 35 years, including an encounter with an alien civilization.

Film Maker Alan Phelan and Critic Chris Clarke will discuss Phelan’s film “Our Kind” and how he approached the script development and the historical context. “Our Kind” is a film about the Easter Rising, but with a different ending where Roger Casement escaped into exile in Norway.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run next Thursday. A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon is free for the whole year!!

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.
