Hi all!
After last week was the quietest in the summer, this week is probably the busiest week. This is all down to the VAST amount of great Heritage Week events. I included about 40 of them, but had to draw a line then and I only scratched the surface. There are many more and many of them are REALLY interesting. So I strongly suggest that you check out www.heritageweek.ie
[ad]
Today you already get the final version of the Dublin Event Guide as the first version, there will be no TWO stage publication. I hope that works for you better. It is not easy for me to achieve, but sometimes I manage. ;-)
I have to try something here, so please just ignore this line: ++++++++++
Update on the bills: We still have to find EUR 60 before the end of the month. to cover all the cost. Thanks so much to all supporters! If you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is another quote by Wayne Dyer, who was an American philosopher, self-help author and motivational speaker. He said:
Loving people live in a loving world. Hostile people live in a hostile world. Same world!
Why type of world would you like to live in?
By the way, if you like these quotes and would like to see more of them, follow me on twitter at www.twitter.com/joergst were I post one or two motivational quotes every day. And if you are on Twitter anyway, also follow the Dublin Event Guide on Twitter at www.twitter.com/DublinEventG

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Martin O’M and Andrew G were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend I have a bit of a problem because there are a number of great events that are outdoor events but the weather forecasts don’t seem to favour outdoor events this weekend.
So, should I mention them anyway? I think I will, because you never know when the beaming sun burts through the torrential rain to turn a rotten day into a gorgeous warm day. Oh, you say that NEVER happens? Ah well, I still live in hope! :-P
Some of my recommendations this week:
The People’s Art Exhibition is happening around St. Stephen’s Green on Saturday and Sunday. Great for a stroll on a nice day. India Day is at Farmleigh House on Saturday and the Heritageweek starts with a number of events. On both days the Movies in the Park in Marlay Park come with a great programme of films, but that is an absolute no no when it rains.
On Sunday there is the Olympic Fun Fest and Smithfield Market, but also the Ukulele Hooley in Dun Laoghaire where you will find me. And there is also a (indoor) Printmuseum Family Fun Day.
And if it rains? Go and have a look at eh Science Gallery Exhibition, it is worth it!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This week is Heritage Week and I did my best to include a lot more interesting events, but I had to stop. Heritage Week is brilliant (as long as you like History and Heritage) and you should definitely check out the full programme. Despite having added more than 40 events more than usually, I only scratched the surface, so do have a look at www.heritageweek.ie

New Speed Limits in Dublin? It will affect you even if you don’t drive!
Last chance to make your opinion known:
Dublin City wants to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h in the whole City Centre between the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal and because that speed limit will also force buses and taxis to crawl along with a speed that is slower than many bicycles go, this will also affect you. And if the “between the canals” limit will go ahead, then Dublin City wants to extend the area further into other parts of Dublin from 2017.
I am totally in favour of a rigorous speed limit near schools (while kids are coming and going, not around the clock!) and in areas with a large amount of pedestrians, but there are MANY other areas where it absolutely does NOT make sense. The AA calls it “absurd”, but importantly is very much in favour of 30 km/h zones if in the right areas.
The main proponent of the 30 km/h speed limit is Green Party councillor Ciaran Cuffe, who was also the loudest anti-busking campaigner in Dublin City Council. The argument of the pro 30km/h side is that it increases the chance of survival for a pedestrian hit by a car significantly, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to find ANY statistics about how many accidents happen between cars and pedestrians in the City Centre every year and if any of them ended with the death of a pedestrian.
You might agree with me, or TOTALLY disagree with me about this speed limit and in BOTH cases you should make your opinion heard by filling in the questionnaire at www.dublincity.ie/speedreview (Check out the two banners at the bottom of the page), or go to the Online Survey directly via this link.
Submissions can be made online until 17:00 on Wednesday 24 August 2016.

RDS Naming rights bought by Laya Healthcare
The renaming continues! After the Point Depot (3Arena), the Grand Canal Theatre (Bord Gais Energy Theatre) and Lansdowne Road Stadium (Aviva Stadium) another venue will officially lose its traditional name and will be named for advertisement and marketing reasons with a brand name. According to the Sunday Business Post, Laya Healthcare will pay EUR 8 mio to put their name on the Leinster Rugby Stadium in the RDS for the next 10 years.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.
Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Irish International Jugger Tournament 2016
10:00 – 16:00, Sat 20 Aug
Wanderers Football Club, 65a Merrion Road, Dublin 4
Jugger is a sport inspired by the 1989 movie “The Salute of the Jugger” created by the man behind Blade Runner, it was especially invented for the film. Around the world people thought it looked class and should be a real sport, so they created clubs.
The Irish Jugger clubs in Ireland are hosting an International Jugger Tournament this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in the Wanderers Rugby Club. Come and check this unusual sport and the colourful teams from around the world including Australia, Canada, America, Germany, Spain battle it out in a two day tournament that will be very different to a GAA or soccer match.
Admission for spectators is free.
If you have never heard of Jugger, you can watch some You Tube clips, but I didn’t find a single one that really captures the sport well. I am not an expert, but my understanding is that there is a jugg (a dog’s skull or imitation thereof) and a base at each side of the field. There is ONE runner (Kwik) in each team and only he is allowed to carry the jugg and his job is to bring it to the base on his side to score points. All other battling players (enforcers) are equipped with different type of weapons and are there to protect the Kwik from the opponents. I am sure I got a few things wrong, but if you go to the event on Saturday and/or Sunday, you will find out more. ;-)

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 20 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.
It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

All other battling players (enforcers) are equipped with different type of weapons and are there to protect the Kwik from the opponents. I am sure I got a few things wrong, but if you go to the event on Saturday and/or Sunday, you will find out more. ;-)

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 21 Aug
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.
I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 21 Aug

Ukulele Hooley 2016
12:00 – 19:00, Sun 21 Aug
People’s Park, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
This is the 7th year of this great Ukulele Festival in Dun Laoghaire. It is a two day event, but the main event for you and me is on Sunday. On Saturday there are Ukulele workshops and a (non-free) Open Mic event in the Haddington Hotel (formerly Kingston Hotel).
And then the big and free event on Sunday is the Ukulele Hooley Concert in the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. From mid-day until evening there will be Irish and International Ukulele bands and soloists playing non-stop. At the same time the Dun Laoghaire Food Market is happening in People’s Park so that you can keep yourself fed.
It is a really great festival, full of positivity and good spirits. And I can tell you that these spirits have been tested in the last few years when the weather gods had an exceptionally bad weather programme sent to Dun Laoghaire! I was there and despite torrential rain, the Ukulele players kept going and going with good humour and a big smile on their face.
I will be in Dun Laoghaire again this year and definitely recommend the Ukulele Hooley!
The line-up for the day is here.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 21 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Rose of Tralee – TV Show Part 1
21:30 – 23:30, Mon 22 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
This is a live event in Tralee and a TV show in your home, so how come it is mentioned in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)?
Well, the main reason it is mentioned here is for the many many non-Irish Dublin Event Guide readers. The Rose of Tralee is an odd piece of Irish culture and you have to watch it (some of it!) at least once. Young women from Irish communities from all over the world try to become the new “Rose of Tralee”, but it is neither a beauty competition nor a talent competition and nobody really knows what the participants are judged on.
Over two long nights 65 (!!!) competitors are interviewed, will praise their granny and thank their parents and then we have to endure a performance of some sort of skills (from singing to sandwich making!). Luckily “reciting a poem” is outlawed this year.
If you grew up in Ireland you either love it or hate it, but you definitely have some strong childhood memories of the “Rose of Tralee”, but if you are not from Ireland you will most likely find it amazingly anachronistic or just boring. 57 years is this event running and shockingly you are part financing it through your TV license fee.
So, enjoy the show! ;-)

Industrial Past of Blackpitts and surrounds – Talk
18:30, Wed 24 Aug
Dolphin’s Barn Library, Parnell Road, Dublin 12
“Blackpitts – the Industrial Past of Newmarket and the Tenters” is a talk by a seemigly unnamed person.
“Located beside the Poddle, the areas around Blackpitts, Newmarket, Cork Street, Donore and the Tenters were once some of Dublin’s most industrialised areas. In Blackpitts, the tanning pits industry thrived from medieval times, contributing to the area’s name. Later, the Huguenot weavers settled in this area, with a ‘New Market’ for the trading of wool and cloth set out by Earl of Meath in the 1620s. This fascinating story is brought together in this talk, giving an overview of the industrial past of the area around Blackpitts and Tenters – and the communities that lived here.”

The Never Ending Road and Walkabout Italia – Talk
18:30, Thu 25 Aug

Darinka is an Italian writer, photographer and blogger who, after living abroad for 15 years, in 2014 decided to go back to Italy and devote herself to her passions: travelling, writing, dreaming and photography.
She walked 3,000 km from the very bottom of Italy to the top, with a diary, a camera, no money and a box in which she collected people’s dreams.
The name of the project was walkaboutitalia, it became a blog and then a book. To promote the book Darinka travelled all around Italy again, but this time with an electric bamboo bicycle, covering more than 6,000 km.
She wil be in Dublin to talk about her two books and about her new project: She will sail he oceans and travel the world on a bike.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 26 Aug

Filthy Ireland – Incompetent Local Authorities & Useless Governments
A week ago, the free local newspaper Dublin People ran a story about the “Plan to end discharge of sewage off Rush coast is progressing” and to say that I was shocked when I read that headline would be a big understatement, I was speechless, appalled and outraged!! And I STILL can’t believe that in 2016 the filthy practice of dumping untreated sewage in the sea continues and will still continue for at least another two years!!
I know that Ireland dirtied our environment that way MUCH longer than it should have, but I thought that during the good years when money was nearly abundant, the filthy practice of sewage dumping had been stopped and that all communities had been equipped with sewage treatment plans. And now I realise that this is probably MUCH worse than this article indicates. If Rush, a village so close to the capital of a European country is such a dirt bag in 2016, then there will probably be MANY more remote places that do the same.
I grew up in a smallish village (half the size of Rush!) in Germany and I remember visiting the local sewage treatment plan when I was in Primary School and that is a long long time away!! And that time that local sewage treatment plan wasn’t new or recent by any means but had been there for many years. Yes, I also know that at that time and still for many years after Ireland was shockingly poor and would have never reached today’s infrastructural level without a huge amount of subsidies from the EU. So everything took a good bit longer, but for god’s sake, this is 2016 and we are still pumping our shite (literally!!) in the sea!?!
What incompetent local or national government has screwed up so much that it took such a long time to make these first steps! And it will take another two years before anything changes!
Useless and incompetent politicians and local authorities!!!
