Hi all!
It is holiday season every where. This means there are less adult events and more children events (thanks to the Libraries and the National Gallery). But the library children’s events book out faster than I can include them, so if you have kids, you need to think ahead and check the websites directly. Holiday Season doesn’t mean, though, that there is nothing for the big kids. There are plenty of events again this week and the weather forecast is brilliant at the moment.

The Dublin Event Guide is currently published in two stages. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app. More events will be added after that and the smartphone app will be updated continually. When all events are entered the second stage is to send the e-mail to all subscribers.
This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.
Update on the bills: Thanks to some more donations, we now need to find EUR 115 before the end of the month. to cover all the cost. Thanks so much to all supporters! If you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by Tim Fargo, an American entrepreneur, author and speaker on business, motivation and human potential. He said:
Don’t envy what people have, emulate what they did to have it.
How would that help you, you wonder? Well, unless they inherited or got as a present what you envy, then they must have achieved it with the skills and abilities that they have acquired. If you emulate what they did, you can also get what they got.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Susan F and Deirdre G were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
My recommendations for this week are primarily outdoor events if the weather holds up as well as we are (currently) promised. Nearly 24 degrees on Saturday AND on Sunday are promised!
So, have a look at all the markets! The Marlay Park Market on Sat + Sun, the Terenure Market and the Temple Bar Market in Saturday and the Dun Laoghaire People’s Park Market on Sunday.
If you like music, then the Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival in the Dame District is the place to be on Saturday and Sunday. There will be an outdoor stage and you will also find a Vintage Car & Motor Bike show in Dame Court.
And if you are a little more cultured, then make use of the good weather and combine it with a Shakespeare performance at “Shakespeare at Irish Monuments” in the Gardens of Dublin Castle.

A brand new band, The Sophisticats, with a repertoire from swing to Salsa and with a vintage take even on Pop and Rock songs has emerged and they will have their first event on Thursday 25 August. The band is lead by talented singer Joan Shields and on the drums is Jerry Fehily, both are good friends of me and supporters of the Dublin Event Guide.
All information about the launch gig on the 25 August is here www.facebook.com/events/306746163003256/ and you can buy tickets (from EUR 6) via the Eventbrite link here.
The Sophisticats have made a pair of Special Tickets available for a Dublin Event Guide reader. This special pair of tickets not only gives you free admission to the gig, but you will also get a choice of Mimosa Cocktail/Alcohol Free Mocktail or 330ml Bottle of Beer (Total value: EUR 24).

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Sweeney’s Mongrel – Update Needed

Speed Limit Consultation
This is so important, I will leave it here another week:
The speed limits in Dublin City are being reviewed at the moment and a public consultation is running. Dublin City has the nonsensical plan to limit the speed in ALL areas of Dublin and on ALL streets to 30 km/h. In my opinion, it makes sense in areas of higher risk (near schools, playgrounds etc), but it doesn’t make sense as a general limit.
Check out the details here www.dublincity.ie/speedreview and if you have ANY opinion, make it known. Do not rely on other people, YOU have to voice your concerns or opinions if you want them to be counted.
Submissions can be made online until 17:00 on Wednesday 24 August 2016.

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
If you run events and if you do your job well, then you want to give your audience an EXPERIENCE! YOu don’t just want them to sit in their chair and be overwhelmed with the content at your event, but you want them to be part of it and to participate. And you also want to ensure that other people will find out how great your event was, so that they have a chance to attend it next time as well. This is where the Complete Guide to Audience Engagement comes in.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.
Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 06 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.
It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Shakespeare at Irish Monuments – Dublin Castle
15:00, Sat 06 Aug
Coach House Dublin, Gardens of Dublin Castle, Dublin 2
Do you remember “Shakespeare in the Park”? The great team at Fortune’s Fool Production originally started in Ranelagh Gardens, then they moved to Iveagh Gardens and this year all their work has been recognised and they went on a nationwide tour first and now are back in Dublin for what I would cheekily call, the main event. The Gardens of Dublin Castle (near Chester Beatty Library) is the location this year and because of the different locations chosen, the event was renamed to “Shakespeare at Irish Monuments”.
The play is “Measure for Measure”, a lesser known play by Shakespeare, so to prepare yourself, have a read of the story behind the play here.
The performances at Dublin Castle are
+ Weekdays: 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 August at 19:00
+ Weekends: 6, 7, 13, 14 August at 15:00
Admission is free and no booking is required. Chairs are not provided, so bring a blanket or similar. There will be no roof and the play will go ahead in light rain, but could be cancelled in heavy rain.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 07 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
14:30 – 16:30, Sun 07 Aug
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.
I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.
———-
Please note: On Sun 07 August, the 10:00 and 12:00 tours at the Magazine Fort have been cancelled because of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. The 14:30 tour is going ahead normally.

The play is “Measure for Measure”, a lesser known play by Shakespeare, so to prepare yourself, have a read of the story behind the play here.

Perseid Meteor Showers
23:55, Thu 11 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
Every year in August, the Perseid Meteor showers will show up when the Earth passes through the long trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. And this year, they are promised to be extra spectacular.
According to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke, the Perseids will be in “outburst” in 2016, which means they’ll appear at double the usual rates: “This year, instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour,”
The metoer showers will be visible from 04-19 August and the peak is on 11/12 August. The best time to watch it is after 01:00 when the moon has set and to see it you need a clear sky.
The advise is: “Go to a dark area, in the suburbs or countryside and prepare to sit outside for a few hours. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark and the longer you wait outside, the more you’ll see. A rate of 150 meteors per hour, for instance, means two to three meteors per minute, including faint streaks along with bright, fireball-generating ones.”
Clear sky is something of a rarety for us, so there is no guarantee that we will see anything at all, but we could also be lucky!

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 12 Aug

Ireland: The Tear and the Smile – Screening
13:00, Fri 12 Aug
Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
“Ireland: The Tear and The Smile – Part 2” was intended to provide an accurate picture of everyday life in Ireland in 1960 for American television audiences. After it was broadcast in 1961, Irish diplomates in the US criticised the film as presenting Ireland as a “poverty- stricken country riddled with backwardness, unemployment and emigration”. Were they right, or did they just not like the facts to be shown?
The film was directed by Willard Van Dyke, is 27 minutes long and will be presented in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute.
Admission to this screening is free.

A Fair Land – Introduction
15:00 – 16:00, Fri 12 Aug
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
A Fair Land is a project in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s Courtyard where a pre-1916 village is built and will operate from 12-28 August.
This project will develop a system for living derived from basic and simple resources used in a creative way. Visitors will have opportunities to eat, make, think or trade and through that process to learn, copy, assimilate and teach. With a focus on creating objects that are useful, desirable and achievable, A Fair Land will present an active and tangible representation of the place of creativity in society, creating a space for families, friends and strangers to gather, get involved, and experience alternative perspectives on living. More details about “A Fair Land” can be found here.
The first event on Friday is an introduction to the project:
Artist and collaborators of A Fair Land project welcome you to the first day that the village opens to the public. Join Sarah Glennie (Director IMMA), Adam Sutherland (Director Grizedale Arts) who will introduce this ambitious project. Followed by a discussion with Karen Guthrie (Somewhere) Andreas Lang (Public Works) and Eoin Donnelly who will introduce the Glut Crop growing in a straw bale garden and barn, the elements that are the core of the project and will feed the village.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Shakespeare at Irish Monuments – Dublin Castle
19:00, Fri 12 Aug
Check the Facebook Page below for any updates.

Art Portfolio Preparation Course for College Applications

This is not your typical free event, instead it is a five-day intensive course. It is free, but only a small amount of future students will be interested. If you know someone who could benefit from it, tell them about it. I will just cut&paste the information I got:
“This five-day intensive course is designed to assist students in the initial stages of their portfolio preparation for college applications in advance of the school year. It includes assessment of existing portfolios, guidance on applications/courses and advice on documentation / presentation of work. Each day will involve specific core workshops on Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and 3D Construction. The use of sketchbooks and visual diaries will be emphasised throughout. Additionally, contextual references to the OPW collection, including curating, conservation and collections care will be made, with some workshops taking place in the Castle rooms.”

I am rich! I am told! – Spam E-Mails and intelligence
Yesterday I got an e-mail from “Barr.kalu paul” and he wrote:
HELLO DEAR,
I’m kalu paul,a lawyer in Cotonou, Benin Republic, late Mr.Joerg Slivkanich,a gold merchant who was my client, died as a result of lung cancer without a will, now I want to present your name to late Mr. Joerg, bank so the money left behind by late Mr. Joerg , can be transferred to your account through my help. The amount of U.S.$ 10.5 million deposited in a local bank here,by late Mr. Joerg before his death on November 23, 2012, I need your information so that I can show you the bank as next of kin to Late Mr.Joerg for further process. Please provide name and full address, your age, profession and position, address, email not mail.ur and mobile number for contact purposes,Please reply via personal e-mail,so I will send more details of Mr.Joerg you need to know: kaluequitychambers@gmail.com
+2296-823-8271
Thanks
Barr.kalu paul
So, there you have it! I am rich!!! 10.5mio!? Nice one! Hahahahahaha
We all get these idiotic mails. The senders send thousands or hundred thousands and sending a mil doesn’t cost a cent to the sender, so if one or two naive people fall for it, they are already making a profit. But I am shocked about the poor quality of the letter. Maybe the dodgy English and punctuation is meant to make it sound authentic?
The most interesting thing is how they try to create a link to me. My name is Joerg Steegmueller and the person that died was called Joerg Slivkanich, so we MUST be related! Don’t you think!? ;-) But to be honest, it looks as if they just took the part before the @ in the e-mail address and used it with a “Mr.” in front of it. Oddly, however, not to refer to me, but to refer to the dead person who left all the money for me. Imagine my e-mail was smartass@mail.com or something like that. ;-) It would then read “now I want to present your name to late Mr. Smartass, bank”. LOL
There are really some stupid Scammers out there. ;-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
