Inspirefest Family Fringe brings together the community groups: CoderDojo, Girls Hack Ireland, GameCraft, TOG, Hardie Kids, Coding Grace, TCD Walton Club, Physics Buskers, CONNECT and Dublin Maker who will provide a whole range of activities.

From coding and hardware hacking workshops to interactive exhibitions and games, there will be a vast amount of for small kids (7+) and big kids too.

A large part of the activities are in the form of workshops and booking was required for the workshops (all booked out!), but there are also some Show & Tell Expos and they don’t require registration. Just walk in and enjoy.

The film ‘The Battle of Somme’ was released in September 1916 and was seen by more than 20 million people in Britain and Ireland. It was hoped that the film would rally civilian support for the war and highlight a great victory.

Tha National Museum will screen the restored film with a short introduction from historian Dr. David Murphy.

The Irish Youth Dance Festival takes place in the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire with performances at 12:00 + 14:00 and a free dance jam for all ages at 13:00.

The programme for 2016 will feature dancers aged from 12 to 25, and offer a real variety of performances showcasing dancers, choreographers and companies from across Ireland.

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Finglas Festival is taking place this weekend and most of activities are free.

On Saturday there will be music and magic on the main stage in the Drogheda Mall (opposite the Shamrock) and in Poppintree Mall (beside the library) children will be entertained, The full list of events and the stage times are listed here.

On Sunday similar events continue as on Saturday. The stage times and a list of all other events is here. An additional popular feature of the Sunday programme will be the “Agnes Fest”, a festival celebrating the “Finglas icon” Mrs Brown. Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). A demonstration against insurance costs, and the focus seems to be car insurance costs, will take place on Saturday. The car insurance prices did indeed increase exponentially and an investigation found earlier this year, that the payouts by the insurances did not go up at all despite the claims by the insurances.

The protest will take place at Merrion Square, where a stage will be set up and Mary Lou Macdonald of Sinn Fein. Michael McGrath of Fianna Fail and Personal Finance Editor of the Irish Independent Charlie Weston will talk.

Every Saturday a kid’s book will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below). Suitable for age 0-6 with their parents.

Fla?neur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.

The two selected artists for Fla?neur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK). They were for a residency in Ireland earlier this year, engaging with the urban and rural landscape and producing the present body of work.

Fla?neur By Dublin is part of a larger project called Flâneur – New Urban Narratives. This is a new, European Union funded, 2 year long project, transforming photographers into fla?neurs and requesting them to apply a new approach to their work within the urban territory. The project involves an international network of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries, and it will be presented in the 13 partner cities.

The launch will take place on Sat 02 July at 19:00.

The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

Dublin’s Biggest Free International Pub Craw is taking place again with up to 100 people from around the world.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

Baltic Day is a one day festival which brings together three countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. to introduce Baltic cultural heritage to people in Ireland. There will be a food and craft fair and traditional folk music and dance performances will take place throughout the day. For the kids a Bouncy Castle is provided.

The National Play Day is a day full of games and fun for kids. It happens once a year and is organised by Dublin City and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. This year’s National Play Day will be on this Sunday in Merrion Square.

A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

The film captures the excitement of the opening night occasion and provides a fascinating exploration of Leonardo’s great works. Art historian and broadcaster Tim Marlow explains the great masterpieces. An biography and reflections on Leonardo’s influence since his death 500 years ago is also included in the film.

“An Afternoon of Traditional Turkish Music” is a live performance of Turkish music, including traditional Istanbul songs and the sounds of the kanun (a traditional Turkish string instrument) and the ney (an ancient cane flute).

As part of the 1916-2016 Centenary Commemorations, a free tour will take at Arbour Hill Cemetery every Sunday at 14:00. (from March until end of October).

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

The film captures the excitement of the opening night occasion and provides a fascinating exploration of Leonardo’s great works. Art historian and broadcaster Tim Marlow explains the great masterpieces. An biography and reflections on Leonardo’s influence since his death 500 years ago is also included in the film.

Kieran Flood, IWT Conservation Officer will be talking about the important issue of the threats facing our pollinating insects, especially bees. Bee numbers have been declining in Ireland, Europe and beyond. This talk will discuss the importance of these pollinators, their decline and what can be done to stop it. The talk will delve a little deeper into the wonderful world of Irish bumblebees and the All Ireland Pollinator Plan – an island wide plan to help protect our bees.

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) and Rathfarnham Castle were also on that list, but they have both been removed. Which is a big loss.

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Dublin PubhD or “PhD in the Pub” is an event where once every month three postgraduate or postdoctoral students will share the content of their PhD in under ten minutes and without the help of Powerpoint or other visual helps.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The best event in Dublin of the year is happening again over the coming weekend. The City Spectacular, sponsored by Laya Healthcare (formerly the “Street Performance World Championship”) is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are some changes (less stages, fewer performers, added other events), but it is still an amazing and outstanding event and I strongly recommend it to anyone.

If you can’t make it on Saturday or Sunday, you will have a chance to see some performances already on Friday. On two stages in Merrion Square a total of 13 performances will be shown. The same performers will be on stage on Saturday and then on Sunday again, so you could say that the Friday event is a warm up or a preview.

Other components of the City Spectacular are a a music stage, Creative Hub (sponsored by ESB), food stalls, Live Science Shows, an Imaginosity playground, writing workshops for children, Silent Disco, Artzone, Dance & Drama Workshops. etc

The festival is free, but be aware that the street performers make their money from your donations, so bring some money with you and be generous if the show was great.

Some seasoned Street Performance World Championship/City Spectacular goers will miss the big names that were at the festival over the years and indeed, the de-focus from the championship to just an entertainment event in one of many cities in the world, had an influence in that direction. But remember that you probably didn’t know a Space Cowboy or a Mario the Queen of the Circus either before you saw them in Merrion Square. So, come to the City Spectacular with the same enthusiasm, curiosity and playfulness as in all previous years and you will entirely enjoy it again! ;-)

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Summer Music at Sandford is a series of lunchtime concerts at Sandford Parish Church. Every Friday in July and August these classical concerts will take place.

The launch of “Leabhar na hAthghabhála / Poems of Repossession”, the first comprehensive critical anthology of twentieth-century poetry in Irish with English translations, will take place in the National Library. The book was edited by Louis de Paor. Former President of Ireland Mary McAleese will launch the edition and the evening will include selected readings and light refreshments.

The book includes poems by Pádraig Mac Piarais and Liam S. Gógan from the revival period (1893-1939), a selection from the work of Máirtín Ó Direáin, Seán Ó Ríordáin and Máire Mhac an tSaoi, who transformed writing in Irish after the Second World War, before the Innti poets – Michael Davitt, Liam Ó Muirthile, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, Biddy Jenkinson – and others developed new possibilities for poetry in Irish in the 1970s and 80s. It also includes work by more recent poets such as Colm Breathnach, Gearóid Mac Lochlainn, Micheál Ó Cuaig and Áine Ní Ghlinn.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.

The Janet Galvan Choir Festival will wrap up in Dublin with a Gala Concert in Christ Church Cathedral on Friday.

Four choirs and a total of 120 singers will be involved and will perform individually and then altogether. The program ranges from Mozart to Molly Malone, so there should be something in it for everyone.

The choirs are from Georgia (USA), New Jersey (USA), Perth (Australia) x2.

Admission to the concert is free, but our friends from the Musical Youth Foundation (the organisers of the former Dublin City Soul Festival) have been invited by the choirs to collect donations after the mass for the musical education of disadvantaged children in Ireland. So, if you can, please give them a nice donation.

The Clandestinos are a 7-piece band from Galway and they will play reggae, ska, latin & dub.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

The great Mutefish will play their unique Eastern Europe-influenced Irish Power Trad at this gig in Sin E and they will be supported by Callous Crows.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.

Pine Marten will play a gig in Mother Reilly’s. They are a modern string band playing folk with bluegrass and Irish trad influences.

“The Last Band in the World” will play a gig full of funk, soul and R&B.

McGowans in Phibsborough run a monthly Singles Night. There will be music, games and ice breakers.
