Hi all!

This week, I am posting the first update a good bit earlier than most week. This is because I already have a lot of events for the weekend in there AND because there are two big events that start already from 09:00 on Saturday, although you can still arrive later in the day: The UCD Festival (tickets still available) and the Coderdojo Coolest Projects Awards.

[ad]

In addition Saturday is the good weather day this weekend, so I better equip you with a list of things to do. Sunday looks wet and grey if my forecast is right.

But despite my hard work, I didn’t get ALL events in. So I will update them throughout the morning (and early afternoon) on Saturday and will send the final mail out when all is included. The updates throughout the day will happen on the website and in the smart phone app.

This is the FINAL version and 28 (!) events were added to the preliminary version posted online this morning.

Super helpful donors last week, so the required amount before the end of the month went down to to EUR 60. Thanks for all the help! Can YOU also help?

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by stress reduction expert and mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn. He said

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Adam J, Marie C S, Colm D and Niamh D were so wonderful to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend Saturday is the sunny day and Sunday is – accroding to the forecasts – a wet and grey day. So get out on Saturday!! Unfortunately, though the outdoors events are on Sunday with Bikefest in St. Anne’s Park and the Cargobike Race in Phoenix Park (Is it odd to think that they both could have happened in the same park???)

The Coderdojo Coolest Project event and the UCD Festival are both on Saturday.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Car Sharing – A new company is entering the market

For a long time GoCar was the only Car Sharing initiative in Ireland. It is a great service for people that only sometimes need access to a car and we all have seen the white Go Cars with the green writing on it. GoCar already launched back in 2010 and they have hundreds of cars on the street. A great service!

But things move on and while GoCar currently still says “Ireland’s Only Car Sharing Company” in their tag line on the website, this has changed now.

Toyota Ireland has announced the launch of their Yuko Car Sharing club. At the moment, they will only have three bases and 15 cars (all hybrid cars!), so they are still far behind GoCar, but it is just the start for the YUKO Car Club. Let’s see how competiton might impact this area. Find out more details about Yuko at yuko.toyota.ie

Dublin Event Guide on Air – UNFIXED Web-Radio show

On Thursday, Adam and Toby from the web-radio show UNFIXED invited me to come to their show. Adam is a Dublin Event Guide subscriber and supporter since 2008 (!) and they run their web-radio show for the last 10 years. It is a quirky programme and it was a lot of fun to meet up with the UNFIXED crew and to do the interview. :-)

If you want to listen to the show, you can do so at UNFIXED.filetap.com Have a listen to the whole show if you can! But if you have only limited time available and only want to hear the part about the Dublin Event Guide, then go to 00:20 (20 minutes in).

Thanks to Adam, Toby and Nina. It was fun. ;-)

Stockphotos for Bloggers and Graphic Designers

If you are a blogger or graphic designer or anybody else who occasionally or regular needs pictures for publications, then you know all about Stockphotos. There are many sites around, but not too many free resources. I am looking for pictures sometimes for the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page and I found an amazingly good priced package, 100 photos for EUR 39, that is – in a world where a single picture can cost well over EUR 40 – a great price and the 100 photo bundle won’t expire! The deal is for the stockphoto site www.depositphotos.com But you can only get it via this link www.appsumo.com/~yxJVd/ not directly on the depositphoto site.

Two notes regarding the link: 1) It will expire as soon as the max amount of bundles is sold! 2) You help the Dublin Event Guide if you buy through the appsumo link above, because I will get some reward, but to be honest, this is not the reason for telling you about this deal. I am telling you because it is genuinely an amazing deal!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

The Clondalkin Festival is taking place from 17-19 June, but detailed information is sparse. The website inclondalkin.ie is not working and the Facebook Pages don’t have a lot of detail. I guess/hope you know all the details if you live there. ;-)

The Facebook Page below has a few pictures that describe what is planned, but I wasn’t able to find a schedule listing all, so let me summarise:

It is a village/community festival in Clondalkin with Dancing, Marshall (oohh!) Arts Displays that should probably be Martial Arts Displays, Mobile Animal Far, Magician, Street Performers, Ballon Modellers and Face Painters, Live Music.

Daire Skate Event

17:00, Sat 18 Jun

The Bernard Shaw, 12 Richmond Street South, Dublin 8

Bodytonic, the people that run the Bernard Shaw Pub are cryptic at best of times. Their event descriptions help nobody because they don’t describe much. Maybe it is an insider code? Or maybe I am just not smart enough to understand?

On Saturday this is taking place “Toejam: Daire Skate Event, Exhibition”. I don’t know who Daire is and what he exhibits. Toejam is the name for a wholes series of events in the Bernard Shaw from Flea Markets to gigs, but I don’t know if this is an artist syndicate or a “cost centre” or anything else.

But, hey, there is another line! The “Toejam: Daire Skate Event Exhibition” is “A Skateboarding Art, Photo and Video Exhibition.” Does that help? Not much! But I know now, that I have to have an interest for skateboarding to appreciate this event fully. Maybe? Probably? Hmmmm, Bodytonic, your marketing is improvable!

Admission is free.

It is a village/community festival in Clondalkin with Dancing, Marshall (oohh!) Arts Displays that should probably be Martial Arts Displays, Mobile Animal Far, Magician, Street Performers, Ballon Modellers and Face Painters, Live Music.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

World Refugee Day Solidarity Walk – Protest

18:30, Mon 20 Jun

GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

“United Against Racism” invites you to a solidarity walk to mark the World Refugee Day on 20 June.

The event is described like that:
“Refugees are walking thousands of miles. What they leave behind are their dreams, their hopes, and their loved ones. Some dead, some alive. They march for reasons that anyone of us would do so. What they face are border fences, armed patrols, deadly seas, ‘fortress Europe’ policies and deportation centres. For many, the long ‘journey of hope’ turns into further misery at European borders.
There are two Europes, one that shuts down the borders to refugees, the other one that welcomes them. Come and join the second Europe.”

Future of the Left in Latin America – Talk

19:00, Tue 21 Jun

Liberty Hall, 33 Eden Quay, Dublin 1

“The Future of the Left in Latin America: Updates from Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Argentina” is the topic of the Latin American Solidarity Centre’s LASC Wednesday event …on Tuesday(!!)

Following over a decade of left-leaning governments, the past 6 months have witnessed radical changes in the political status quo in Latin America. Beginning with the election of Right-candidate Mauricio Macri in Argentina, through the controversial removal of Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, to the upheaval in Venezuela and uncertainty in Ecuador, many are speculating that the era of leftist hegemony is coming to an end, and that rightist dominance is returning.

The panel will reflect on the achievements and errors of the Left-wing governments, assess the challenges facing the Left across the region, particularly that emanating from the regional Right, and offer analysis of the Left’s future as a social and political force.
Speakers are Dr Barry Cannon (Maynooth), Dr Mariya Ivancheva (UCD), Chris O’Connell (DCU), Valesca Lima (UCD), and Tony Phillips (Attac Ireland) with chair Councillor Eilis Ryan, Workers Party

The event will take place in the Connolly Hall in Liberty Hall. Admission is free.

Ireland – India Conference

13:00, Thu 23 Jun

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

This two half-day long conference (23+24 June – 13:00-19:00 / 09:00-13:30) hosted by the Trinity Long Room Hub explores, from literary and historical perspectives, interactions between Ireland, England’s oldest colony, and India, the largest colony, from the late seventeenth century.

Three major themes emerge:
1) The important role that the Irish played – especially as bureaucrats and soldiers – in facilitating British rule in India.
2) The extent to which Ireland acted as ‘colonial point of reference’ and how ideologies and ideas and policies fashioned in Ireland were then applied in India.
3) The connections between Irish and Indian nationalists, how they inspired each other and how they contributed towards the demise of the British Empire.

Admission is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite site here.

Stealing Africa – Documentary Screening

18:30, Thu 23 Jun

Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

ActionAid is inviting to the documentary screening of “Stealing Africa” to mark World Public Services Day.

The documentary exposes how mining companies in Zambia are making huge profits and are avoiding their fair share of taxes, while two-thirds of people in Zambia live below the poverty line.
Zambia has an abundance of natural resources, but it continues to rank among the poorest 20 countries in the world. When multinationals avoid paying taxes, countries like Zambia are starved of revenue to fund public services like schools, hospitals, medicines and roads.

ActionAid’s Tax Justice Photo exhibition will be on display in the room from 17:30 and can be viewed before and after the film screening. The exhibition features stunning images and personal stories from Zambia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Liberia showing the true impact of tax dodging on the lives of the world’s poorest people.

Admission is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite link below.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

BREXIT and Who are these neighbours of ours?

It is less than a week until the British voters will decide if they will stay in the EU or if they will leave and while we in Ireland have no influence over the vote, it is still interesting to look at the what Britain was before the EU discussion began and what it is now.

I love the multicultural society in Ireland and if you compare it to an Ireland from the 80s, the society has changed SIGNIFICANTLY. Not for everyone, I know and you don’t have to change anyway if you don’t want to, but for the people that like variety, they can find events from all different countries and cultural backgrounds in Dublin.

But whenever I was in the UK in the past, I was always puzzled that the UK was soooo much more multicultural and that all seems to be working quite well in the society. There are Indians&Pakistani, Africans, Asians and Caucasians and a lot more in close proximity and nobody seemed to mind in the slightest.

The favourite national dish seems to be Indian, Italians are in charge of the previous national dish: Fish & Chips and they brought Coffee and Ice Cream, Jamaicans provide the music and had a sizeable influence on youth culture in the 60s and 70s were hugely important, Black people seemed better integrated than in most other countries. All in all, it just seemed as if Britain endorsed their colonial past by accepting all different cultures in and giving them the same opportunities. I know that Irish people had to deal with a lot of subliminal or even open racism at some point, but it seemed to me that this had improved a lot as well.

Please note: No formal research went into this, it was just an impression!!

But then the Brexit discussion happened! And the “new” Britain seems to be divisive, intolerant, selfish, excluding, “we are better than they”, confrontational , bullying and Anti-European or even Anti-International. What happened??

Imagine you had a nice, friendly and tolerant neighbour who over night became an intolerant, antisocial bully. You would probably not WANT to have anything to do with the bully anymore, right? So, if the majority of British people decides for leaving the EU, I think we should be glad that they are gone and we should treat them like you would treat the anti-social bully neighbour.

By the way: I don’t think the EU is perfect and we should be grateful for all it does, BUT I do think that Ireland and many other countries have and still do benefit hugely from the EU. I also am a strong believer in co-operation and “strength in numbers” instead of doing it on your own and I think that improving the EU from the inside is the right approach. So, Brexit supporters, I don’t understand you at all!
