I hope you enjoyed the sun and warmth this last week as much as I did. I definitely could get used to that weather, actually I was once used to it because that was the weather (plus a few more degrees) where I grew up and sometimes I ask myself if Dublin was worth giving up the good weather for. But I am still here and have no plans to leave and I guess I am not alone in this. No matter if you are born in Ireland or born abroad, most people at some point ask themselves if this is really the place they want to be.

The good thing about Dublin is that it offers soo much else, so that we are (albeit slightly reluctantly) are ok to give up on some things. ;-)
This weekend is a busy one again and you won’t be too surprised, I guess, if I have to tell you that the Dublin Event Guide will be sent in two stages again. The first stage will be an update of the content on the website and in the smart phone app. And this preliminary Dublin Event Guide will then be replaced when all is finished and the final version will be sent by e-mail.
This is the FINAL version!

The Academic + Horse Racing – Bulmers Live at Leopardstown – Ticket Competition

Leopardstown Racecourse is inviting to the Bulmers Live at Leopardstown series of live gigs with well known and big bands and horse races between 09 June and 11 August.
On 16 June four-piece indie band The Academic from Mullingar will be at Leopardstown. The band has performed at Other Voices as well as major festivals such as Electric Picnic, Longitude, Indiependence. They opened for bands like The Pixies at Live At The Marquee, Kodaline and Little Green Cars. The Dublin Event Guide got a pair of tickets for Bulmers Live at Leopardstown featuring racing and a live concert by The Academic for that event.
All summer Leopardstown are bringing you a fantastic line-up of live gigs, great food and thrilling horse racing from Leopardstown Racecourse with Aslan (09 June), The Academic (16 June) Nathan Carter (23 June), Hermitage Green (14 July), Booka Brass Band (21 July), The Strypes (04 August) and The Boomtown Rats (11 August).

Doors will open at 16:30, racing starts at 17:55, the last race is at 20:55 and the gig will start at 21:15.

TRANS-FUSION Festival – Transgender Equality Network Ireland
From 11-19 June TRANS-FUSION takes place, a festival for the Transgender community plus friends and supporters.
Looking through the list of scheduled events, I am quite certain that there will be some free events. However, the organisers failed to specify this and if it is not clearly declared as free, I can’t include it in the listings. National Bikeweek
The National Bikeweek takes place from Sat 11 – Sun 19 June and there will be a large number of cycling events nationwide. The website at www.bikeweek.ie shows the events sorted by County and since they are all free, I have all the bigger and some smaller events listed in this Dublin Event Guide.

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition

Libraries in Dublin
Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create ‘little prints’ on ‘little known events or incidents’ during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.
Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.

On Display: Lord Mayor’s Ceremonial Coach

The Lord Mayor’s Ceremonial Coach is on display on the forecourt of Mansion House on Saturday and also the public rooms in Mansion House are open and can be visited.
The coach was built in 1791 by William Whitton of Dominick Street for use by the Lord Mayor of Dublin. It cost £2,690, an enormous sum at the time and is a testament to the intricate and delicate work of Dublin craftsmanship. And Mansion House is the Lord Mayor’s residence for over 300 years.
Dr. Philip McEvansoneya (Trinity College Dublin) will give a talk in the Mansion House at 11:00 about the fascinating story behind the coach’s creation. Admission is free but booking was required. Maybe you are lucky and it isn’t full yet? You could try because it is too late to book now.

Raffaello, Red Tulips & free Hot Air Balloon ride

Raffaello, the white chocolate-free, coconut sweet is bringing 4,000 tulips, 10,000 Raffaello samples to Dublin and will hand them out on Friday and Saturday (10+11 June) near Merrion Square.
In addition they are bringing a Hot Air Balloon to Dublin that will rise up over Dublin for 20 minute trips of a max of 4 people per ride. The Balloon Trip is free, but it seems that “first come, first served” is the chosen method of filling the balloon. And since on the two days only a total of 192 people will be able to enjoy this great experience, you shouldn’t bet too much on making it into the basket under the balloon.
But for the 192? Wow! What an experience!
For the majority, who has to stay behind, a photo booth, and complimentary hair and make up sessions have to do.

Dr Thomas will reflect on her work in Kunduz, the week leading up to the airstrikes and how attacks like this affect the delivery of medical care in conflict.

Dublin City Council Bikeweek Safe Cycle

Every year during Bikeweek, there is a mass cycle lunchtime event. If I remember it right, it was in previous years on the Thursday, but this year (maybe because of Bloomsday?) it is on the Wednesday. The cycle is 5km long and only takes about 20 minutes. Cyclists assemble at 12:00 and the cycle starts at 12:30.
It goes from Grand Canal Quay to Grand Canal Street, Bath Avenue, Londonbridge Road, Church Avenue, Sean Moore Road, Pigeon House Road, York Road, Thorncastle Street, Bridge Street, Ringsend Road to finish on Grand Canal Quay.
In previous years there was a market on Grand Canal Square and registered participants got a Goodie Bag. None of this is mentioned this year, but you could win a bike shop voucher if you register.

The programme will include a number of Thomas Moore’s Melodies such as Silent O Moyle, Oft in the Stilly Night, The Last Rose of Summer and Love’s Old Sweet Song, The Kerry Dance, Jerusalem and more.

“Rising” is a photographic exhibition that consists of 60 photographs and showcases the National Library’s rich imagery of the events and locations of 1916. It contains photographs from the Keogh Collection, the Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Collection, newly digitised photographs from the De Valera Collection and various 1916 albums. The images are enhanced by audio recordings of actors reading from selected letters and diaries detailing first-hand accounts of the Rising.
The public tours take place on the third Thursday of each month: 16 June, 21 July, 18 August, 15 September and 20 October.

James Joyce and three Cities: Dublin, New York and Paris

The story of the publication of Joyce’s works in Dublin, New York and Paris will be celebrated in the Teachers’ Club with music, songs and readings from Dubliners, Ulysses, Portrait of the Artist and Finnegans Wake by Colm ‘Stride’ O’Brien, Micheál Shanley and the Teachers’ Club Ensemble.
Relive an Edwardian Soirée in the house where Joyce received singing lessons from Vincent O’Brien in 1904 in preparation for The Feis Ceoil. Clasically trained, Colm ‘Stride’ has played more than 50 concerts in The National Concert Hall featuring Ragtime and ‘stride’ piano. The Teachers’ Club Ensemble is a mixture of voices from soprano to alto, bass to ‘barrel-tone’. The aim is to reproduce the sounds and moods of an Edwardian soirée with arias, ballads, popular music and music-hall.
As well as being singing teacher to Joyce, Vincent O’Brien also gave singing lessons to John McCormack, a source of inspiration for Shaun the Post in Finnegans Wake. Joyce mentions Vincent O’Brien by name in the Circe episode where he conducts a choir of 600 voices as Bloom is burned at the stake. Vincent was director of the Palestrina from 1903 to 1948.

First find a woman then start your drink driving ban – Legal System in Ireland
The legal system in Ireland, of which judges are a cornerstone, keeps puzzling me. I haven’t checked yet how judges are chosen, but whoever does the choosing must be some odd ball or alternatively these judges become odd balls themselves only AFTER they are appointed.
The Irish Times reported about the case of a bachelor farmer in County Kerry and the Irish Examiner had a slightly different interpretation of the story. The guy is called John O’Shea and he is 60 years of age. In July 2014 he went from Mastergeeha to Waterville (approx. 9km) to get food for his cows and drank too much when discussing football. On the way home, he drove into a ditch and was found to have nearly four (!!) times the legal alcohol limit in his blood (198mg). The penalty for that will be a a 3-year driving ban and luckily, the judge didn’t indicate that he plans to deviate from that.
The solicitor asked for the driving ban to be delayed until after the summer and here starts the oddness. It seems that the solicitor asked for the delay so that the farmer can look after the cows, but the judge seemed to have suggested the 60 year old never-married farmer should find a “nice woman” that will drive him around and – possibly seeing the opportunity – the solicitor quickly suggested that he could go to Lisdoonvarna to the matchmaking festival if he still had a car for the summer.
It seems that there is a lot of stupid-talk in court rooms in Ireland and it also could be that the solicitor just saw the opportunity that the judge provided and jumped on it without having planned to go for the “find a woman” reason for the delay.
But it really makes you wonder about the ability of Irish judges to do their job. This farmer had FOUR times the amount of alcohol in himself than he should have, so he didn’t just drink a little bit more than he knew he should have, but he filled himself up. Luckily nobody got hurt, but is it really the right message a judge should send??
