The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

Emily Gallagher will run a weekly “just for fun” photo trail where you get instructions to hunt for specific snaps around the city centre. Afterwards the symbolic significance to the snaps will be shared. The overall theme is “Get a glimpse of directions you may wish your life to take and discover decisions you may desire to make.”

Wicklow writer Chris Rush’s debut horror novel ‘Folklore’ asks what would happen if Irish folktales were actually true? And from the USA, Lisa V. Proulx’s ‘Down Came November’ is the haunting story of a shattered life and the broken woman who is plunged into the depths of madness after tragedy destroys her world.

Both authors are in the Gutter Book Shop and everyone is invited to meet them. Admission is free.

The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon will happen again on the June bank holiday. It is a 10km run with the start line in Baggot Street and the finish line at Fitzwilliam Square. The event is a charity fundraiser where usually the participants choose their preferred charity and raise money for it. Only women are allowed to participate!

Registration is closed now and the event is not free, but it is free to cheer on and support the nearly 40,000 runners.

The course map is here and the route is roughly from Fitzwilliam Street via Baggot Street to Merrion Road, then via Nutley Lane to Stillorgan Road. Then the course does a loop out on Stillorgan Road towards the Radisson Hotel and back again to Nutley Lane. Then onwards through Donnybrook and back to Fitzwilliam Street.

Race numbers and bags have to be collected at the Woman’s World Show in the RDS Simmonscourt Complex on Saturday or Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00.

A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

The film captures the excitement of the opening night occasion and provides a fascinating exploration of Leonardo’s great works. Art historian and broadcaster Tim Marlow explains the great masterpieces. An biography and reflections on Leonardo’s influence since his death 500 years ago is also included in the film.

At this month’s event Graham Prole will talk about the Mute Swan Projects of Greater Dublin and what really happens to the Swans of Portobello. The event series “The Invention of Italy” continues with a talk about “1960: The economic miracle and La Dolce Vita” by Simona Colarizi.

In just over a decade Italy had emerged from the material and moral ashes of the Second World War and a searing civil war that spelled the end of Fascism. A new democratic and republican State had been born, but the changes with respect to the past were not limited to institutions and politics. As elsewhere in Western Europe the Golden Age had also dawned in Italy, which experienced a genuine economic, social and cultural revolution. The primarily agricultural country was transformed into an industrial power, ranked seventh among the world’s greatest. A miracle – this was the exact term used to define those years of tumultuous growth in Italy, the years of Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” which captured both the highs of the economic boom but also growing nostalgia for a world of tradition and certainty that was forever past.

This Lunchtime Music Recital by the Royal Irish Academy of Music is part of a free series of events organised in association with the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection”.

Cultivate.ie, Trocaire and Feasta, the Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability, will host a briefing on CapGlobalCarbon. This is a proposal for a citizen-led fair and sustainable global regime for managing the transition out of fossil fuels. Bryan Murray and Úna Crawford O’Brien present a fifty-minute tour of the development of Pearse’s character and politics, with performed extracts from his writings. Pieces include the graveside oration for O’Donovan Rossa, the court-martial speech, and passages from Pearse’s prose fiction and poetry. A sequence of diary entries from his friend Mary Hayden give a unique glimpse into the private man, and Pearse’s songs are presented in the harp arrangements of his sister Mary Brigid.

“An “Irish Mode”? The Literary Writings and Legacy of Thomas MacDonagh” is a conversation performed by the UCD Ad Astra Drama Scholars with selected readings from MacDonagh’s works,

It is a conversation between Professor Danielle Clarke and Professor Margaret Kelleher from the School of English, Drama and Film, UCD who will discuss the significance of MacDonagh’s writings on Shakespeare and the early modern period and on the traditions of Irish writing. Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After ’16” short films. After ’16 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.

The screenings will take place in the AV Lecture Theatre every Friday in June between 11:00-16:00 with a break from 13:00-14:00. This is a drop-in event and no booking is required.

Raffaello, the white chocolate-free, coconut sweet is bringing 4,000 tulips, 10,000 Raffaello samples to Dublin and will hand them out on Friday and Saturday (10+11 June) near Merrion Square.

In addition they are bringing a Hot Air Balloon to Dublin that will rise up over Dublin for 20 minute trips of a max of 4 people per ride. The Balloon Trip is free, but it seems that “first come, first served” is the chosen method of filling the balloon. And since on the two days only a total of 192 people will be able to enjoy this great experience, you shouldn’t bet too much on making it into the basket under the balloon.

But for the 192? Wow! What an experience!

For the majority, who has to stay behind, a photo booth, and complimentary hair and make up sessions have to do.

Historian Dr. Emma Edwards will give advice and guidance on researching the rich and varied collections of the National Library, with a special focus on sources relating to 1916. The workshop will draw on case studies of personalities from the NLI’s 1916 collections and is suitable for anyone looking to embark on a research project or to enhance research skills in navigating the catalogue, accessing the various collections and interpreting the sources.

The Choristers of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral invite you to join them for their Summer Concert in aid of the Choir School.

The programme includes some well known choral and organ classics including Händel’s Hallelujah, Widor’s Toccata (Symphony no.5 for organ) & Parry’s “I was glad” performed by one of the few remaining all boys choirs in Ireland.

The EURO 2016, the European Soccer Championship, is starting on Friday with the match of France vs Romania.

EURO 2016 will take place in France this year and it will run until 10 July. Ireland’s first match is on Monday (13 June) at 17:00.

Unfortunately I haven’t heard about any public viewings in Dublin. They are extremely popular in many other countries, but Ireland hasn’t adopted that great idea yet (?).
